There's a FB group, tournies, and everything. Are you near Arlington Heights or Glen Ellyn
i've had a request to join the FB group sitting for like 3 weeks lol. nothing. I canceled it and sent it again today cuz I figured it got lost or something.

And I'm in Plainfield, really close to Oswego and Aurora. Joliet/Bolingbrook also aren't unreasonably far

I would play you if you weren't going to the WRONG OSU. Just kidding. Funny that we both go to OSU s though.

Well, if they won't come out, you'll have to take initiative and confess your feelings to them :p (sorry, your wording was just too good ;) ).

The smash community as a whole is pretty cool bunch of people, just be friendly and they'll be friendly to you as well. Ask for freeplays with whoever you can, and just relax and have a good time. You'll be just fine :)

1. Make it your goal to play 10 different people. If you play someone for 10+ games in a row and you aren't really evenly matched, switch it up. You can play me first if I'm there when you get there. Just look for Dr. PP.

2. Even if you are evenly matched with the guy you are playing, switch after 20 or so games. You may find someone else who you are evenly matched with, and you can always meet back up with that person later in the tourney for friendlies.

3. Introduce yourself to everyone. Don't just sit down silently. Simply sitting down and saying, "Hey, I'm RPC" is perfect.

4. Remember as many names as possible.

5. Don't worry about winning AT ALL.

6. Watch grand finals.

7. If you have time tonight, watch this Day[9] video. I know absolutely nothing about Star Craft so you don't need to either, but you can take a lot of his advice and apply it to Melee.

8. Don't even worry about IMPROVING at all. Your overarching goal for your first tournament is to become familiar with the community, its members, and how you fit into the community (how you can enjoy yourself). The fastest way to do that is to try a little of everything. It can mean anything from picking a barlw character for P:M friendlies (even if you never want to take it seriously), playing a bunch of teams matches, going nuts with Cactuar Stamina Pancake, and any other number of things.

Hey.
Stop being such a *****.
BAM, MOTIVATION

I have a feeling you'd be awkward even if you did know people at the tourney. Like Bones said, though, your goal should be to meet new dudes. So do that.

EDIT: that DayJ video is the truth.

I have horrible social anxieties, especially as a transgender, yet I still attend tournaments.

is empty hop --> waveland backwards --> react to what marth does useful against marths who running ps to grab alot? it seems like it would make them wiff letting you sh dair them. and if they decide to dash attack i think away and down is good di (correct me if im wrong, Im a new player and have lots of DI questions).

Stop being a punk. I drive an hour just to play at a random 20 man tourney in Oregon, so if you have access to S@X, use it. You know people once you meet them, so if your problem isn't knowing anyone, fix it. Also, if you don't start playing real players, you'll continue to be a bad player. (If the only people you play with are other people afraid to go to a tourney, you're almost certainly missing out on a ton of aspects of the game, and only wasting your time with tech skill.)

@RPC

Son, I am disappoint.

Yeah, I use that a lot. Even if they don't PS, if you make it look like you're about to do a horribly spaced nair and then FF WL to stay out of Marth's grab range, he'll whiff a shield grab and you can punish. Just make sure you aren't deep on his shield/body when you do it because Marth's grab is so huge that even if you WL like max distance he can still grab you. You also have to worry about getting to predictable with empty hops because they may just grab early, which is why I emphasized staying out of range during most of your jump and WL, if not during all of it.

:( sorry, but i promise you I will make it up and really be an influential player and show up instead of bein such a prick

im dissapointed in myself
what more could i want, the smash community is full of hype, just watching live streams these past 2 years has made me want to be apart of it
player guidance is something baby smashers should not take for granted cuz you guys using your time to show up from long distances is really amazing
me not showing up is really ****ed up
obviously you come to s@x to compete and get better, not spend all your time nurturing baby smashers

Not a big deal bro. I'm not personally offended or anything. Just come to the next tourney. lol If you watch that Day[9] video I linked, he actually talks about the very problem you are describing where people are insecure about getting into it because of random fears or whatever. It's totally normal and common.

pu$$y lool. It is scary at first I know but it gets a lot better. I was hella nervous when I first stated playing with the guys that go to school with me. Most of them are cool as **** though and actual friends of mine now.

I'll be honest, I wasn't really nervous at my first few tournaments. I was too excited to play other human beings in Melee. And my second tournament I got a ride from Wife and Husband, so I was star struck and the whole experience felt very surreal. lol

i wanna be retaught how to play smash the right way

the starstruck effect is real enough too. I was starstruck-by-association that two of my friends Hanky and Abu played people like scar, mango, m2k, cactuar, darkrain (that really made me sad when one of them told me they beat darkrain in teams. it was like being **** on and punched in the face), kirbykaze, westballz, vwins, sfat and they even took games off most of them if not beat them in a set.

it was honestly discouraging to me haha. I felt like I would never amount to any sort of legitimate player. Then I got over it and got better and while I still lose to Hanky's and Abu's mains we still have good games and I am proud of my progression.

6. Watch grand finals.
These are big ones. I always see new people go to tournaments and play their friends whom they always play with, rather than new people. When you wanna get good at something, you gotta go BALLZ DEEP. Also, smashers are homies and nothing fosters a friendship quite as quickly as a common interest in this 12 year old game.

Also, grand finals are usually the sickest sets of the tournament, but people always blow off watching them to play friendlies. It's understandable but at that point in the day, everyone is usually tired and playing effin' young link vs DK or some **** LOLL

@Tachi: Yup, starstruck affect is super real. If you go into a set expecting to lose, you absolutely will (that is NOT to say that going into a set expecting to win will make you win though lol)

@Mizuki: I was doing fthrow/bthrow -> jab (and double jab/rapid jab if the first jab connects) a lot in falco dittos last sunday and it seemed to work pretty well. A lot less risky than committing to dair or fsmash to read their DJ back to stage, and it either pushes them off or gives you enough time to do something before they can unless they hella expect it and have the DI of the gods haha

@KP17: Try dash dancing lol. I feel like just short hop -> wavelanding would be too slow and would just let marth engage on you. If marth is in the range where he can just run up to you and shield in your face, then he can do like 5 other things that would pwn you if you were just empty hopping lol. If you get Marth to shield, then jumping AT him and wavelanding back could definitely do you good but I don't think it'd really be anything you'd consistently want to do.

P.S. Is there an easy way to multi-quote on new smashboards?

Hey guise does anybody have any solid advice on facing ICs? I've recently found an ICs player that I can play on a regular basis, and it has made me realize that I have never ever in all my years as a melee player played a competent ICs player. I remember there being an excellent thread on melee discussion some time ago that was literally just "How to beat ICs" but I never bookmarked it and I can't seem to find it anywhere.

So any general advice on the matchup? about all I know so far is that FD is a big no-no, L-cancelling requires extra attention, and killing nana/ separating them is very important. Problem is, I don't know how to control the neutral when nana soaks all the hitstun, and once I finally get in, I don't really know what to do besides just shine, which never really leads anywhere beneficial, and I just generally don't know how to combo them properly (although that's not something you guys can just explain here). So I end up doing a lot of quick F-throws and Fsmashes to try to catch them out. It's just very dissatisfying and sometimes frustrating playing him, but I know it's not his fault so I was hoping for some advice... Thanks in advanced guys
