Potential Alternative Character Slots / Palette Swaps / Clones

Alts, costumes, and clones huh? I’ve done this before and I will again.

Mario franchise:

Mr. L: Costume for Luigi
Dr. Luigi: Clone of Luigi/Clone of Dr. Mario
Toad: Clone of Mario/Peach. Get Peach’s neutral B and Down b, Ice flower, and propeller hat with combat that seems like a clumsier mario but not as clumsy as Luigi.
Daisy: Peach Clone, lose the float for a triple jump, use a kart glider instead of a parasol, kart wheels instead of turnips, a flower instead of a heat on the butt smash, and Taranga instead of toad.
Dry Bowser: Bowser costume
...Bowser’s Nightmare: (Dry Bowser Jr costume)
Birdo: Yoshi clone

Link costumes for different games. BOTW, OOT, Twilight Princess, skyward sword.
Toon Link costumes: Train Conductor and Outset Island Tunic
Impa: Clone of Sheik

Agree with Chrom as an Ike Alt/Clone. Mostly because he also used Aether in fire Emblem heroes.

I want Captain Falcon's, 'Blood Falcon' palette swap to get the Alph treatment.
I also want it more cosmetically fleshed out, so flames become purple, final smash looks like Blood Falcon's vehicle instead of Captain Falcon's etc. Mechanics all remain the same just cosmetic changes to flesh out the Alph treatment.
We don't have a lot of villains, and we don't have many reps for F-Zero so it's like finding a middle ground in place of receiving another character.


I want Link's, 'Dark Link' palette swap to get the Alph treatment as well.
It needs to be more fleshed out though, as the palette swap doesn't have cosmetic effects on his weapons.
Once again we don't have a lot of villains in Smash, it helps to give it a little more something for villain characters.
This would go amazing with the BoTW Link in Smash Switch.
The Dark Link costume was fairly hard to obtain in BoTW.

It would be nice to see these doppelgangers get the alph treatment.

The fact that Mario can turn into Doc in Odyssey and that Cappy turns into his head mirror when it happens, I can see the doctor turning into an Alt like Alph.

If for some reason Pokemon Trainer comes back, Leaf needs to be an alt.

Lucina should become an alt of Marth
Dark Pit should become an alt of Pit
Doctor Mario should become an alt of Mario

I agree, I was kind of surprised this didn't happen in Sm4sh, it is an easy way to add another female character and it opens up the possibility for Cosplay alts.

The fact that Mario can turn into Doc in Odyssey and that Cappy turns into his head mirror when it happens, I can see the doctor turning into an Alt like Alph.

I can see Cappy replacing the cape for Mario's Side-B.
Which would continue the idea of Doc keeping Mario's past moveset.

Impa over Sheik would be so easy. Not like Sheik does anything character specific anyways. Except Vanish....which Impa also does.
Dry Bowser, Blood Falcon, Octoling, Toadette also work.

but I think Ribbon Girl and Daisy have some notable differences that would make them better as clones.

How do you guys feel about the idea that characters would get modified alternative skins? I apologize if this has already been brought up, so please redirect me if it has, but what I am thinking about has to do with alternative skins being completely new characters. For instance, Cpt Olimar got Alph, Bowser Jr. got the Koopalings, etc. So what if Sakurai took it further than that. What if he condensed other characters to do the same, but these alternative skins would have different attributes. A perfect example would be if Dr. Mario was an alternative skin to Mario. It would save a character slot, and Dr. Mario would still have a different feel than Mario. By changing the attributes slightly for these alternative skins, Nintendo could add a lot more contributing characters. I mean doesn't the same almost go for Ness and Lucas? They would condense some of the roster so that more new characters could be added. For example, they could add in Peppy, Slippy, or Krystal. The opportunities are pretty extensive and it would please a lot of people. The biggest problem with this that I see would be using Falco for example. He started out as a clone of Fox back in Melee. Now he has gained his own move set, for the most part. So it would be tough to do this unless Nintendo started doing a franchise grouping system. Anyways, feel free to let me know what you think.

I am sort of mixed about this. On ones end seeing more fighters on the field is great on another end I hope this does not hurt future chances for them to be a unique independent fighter if new inspiration or content allows it since it would be a lot easier to just keep them as an alternate costume for another fighter.

That is all I ever wanted and I would sacrifice almost any element of Smash to have it. That is why I love clones so much, I would rather have 3-6 clones than one newcomer. That I can tell you.

I was thinking whether they would have special skins of characters from different series, for example, Sans for Ness. I know that's a bad example but its all I could think of off the top of my head.

I'm really iffy on this subject on most cases. LIke SSB4 did well with the Koopalings and Alph, but I'm really opposed to say Daisy as a Peach alt since Daisy has different attributes and characteristics to Peach in the games. As in, Daisy could work as a flower-themed clone/semiclone of Peach, but not as an alt. And about Impa for Sheik: after Hyrule Warriors I really don't want to see that lmao, Impa can be really different from Sheik
Like I once thought of Jeanne as a Bayonetta alt but then I remembered her Witch Time works a bit differently (which if we go by Doc, Lucina and Pittoo that's already enough to separate a character to have their own slot)

With that said, here's some ideas of characters I think that could work:
-Ninten for Ness (Itoi indeed said Ness and Ninten are visually similar so the player could decide if they're the same character or not iirc?)
-Toadette for Toad (Captain Toad showed they have the same abilities)
-Louie, Brittany and Charlie for Olimar (even though I'd love to see Alph being separated using the Rock Pikmin, if he's an alt, why can't them?)

idk, characters slots don't work like that, a clone does not take a place of a brand new character (especially in SSB4 since they were costumes that ended up being "promoted" last minute)... And at the end of the day, what would be the difference between a clone and a alternate skin with different attributes?

I understand where you're coming from, but if they continue to do this, they would have so many characters from the same franchise. I mean, I have never played any fire emblem games, but they seem to have a lot of characters that use the same attributes but in different ways. Seriously, though, was it really necessary to make Lucina with the same moveset as Marth? You're telling me that it wouldn't have just been easier to make her a clone with different attributes, or even make her own character? Look at the way that they introduced the alternate effects to each characters movesets. They could've just added new alternative skins with these movesets and it would've made a lot of people happy. I wouldn't mind seeing dixie with diddy, and they could even alter the moveset just a little so that she could use her hair whip or something. Even funky kong under donkey kong, but with some surfboard attack. Just some ideas

Dr. Mario and some other Odyssey outfits, the 64 one would be amazing, a Smash 64 type outfit for the original 12 would be great

Link should have his tunics from every Zelda game but if anything he should have the tunic of the wild from breath of the wild

If we're talking color swaps, I'm hoping if Mega Man comes back, he'll get a new purple color swap. Since all of his alts are based on his actual weapon costumes, and only the ones he uses in his moveset(so far, at least) the Black Hole Bomb would be a good choice, since he does use it for the Final Smash.

I’m hoping we get more variety with the color swaps. Especially in regard to Lucari and Sonic. Plus, I have always wanted to see trophies which features an alternate palettes and references it’s source content. Especially ones that aren’t so well known like Mega Mans.

A thing you all must consider. These alts must have the exact same hurtbox and moveset.

That means you need to pick characters to be alts that have the same body type. And they need to have moves that make sense for that character. This is why Alph worked for Olimar. Same body size and they essentially do the same things in their games.

Pichu as an alt for Pikachu wouldn't work because their body proportions are too different. And Ribbon Girl as an alt for Spring Man wouldn't work because they have different abilities. They could be clones, but they can't be alts.

That being said, let me think. Well there's the obvious one's like Dry Bowser for Bowser. Um... Most of these characters I can see just in cool new outfits rather than new characters. I'd love to see a Mario Maker alt for Mario.

Well, hey, why not, guess I'll pitch in. Don't have anything better to do. For simplicity's sake, I'll only go up to 4 alts, max. Just alts for now. Maybe I'll do clones in a follow-up post. Right now, I'll do the original 12 (with some omitted that I couldn't think of anything for).


MARIO: MR VIDEO GAME HIMSELF
-Alt 1: Sunglasses and shirt from Super Mario Sunshine; one version with blue sunglasses, and the other with black sunglasses ala some Brawl mods
-Alt 2: Builder Mario (Super Mario Maker)
-Alt 3: Rapper Mario (Super Mario Pinball commercial)

*Side note: In his current condition, Dr Mario should never become an alt of Mario. Two different moves alone and differing stats are plenty enough for a different slot on the roster.


DONKEY KONG: KING OF THE JUNGLE
-Alt: His outfit from his appearance as a secret boss in Punch-Out Wii


LINK: HERO OF HYRULE
*NOTE: Since everybody should know now he's rocking that Breath of the Wild look, this means that some of these may not work should Link be getting drastically altered.*
-Alt 1: His appearance from Brawl/SSB4
-Alt 2: Ocarina of Time Link (the one that appeared in 64 and Melee, also has voice clips from said games)
-Alt 3: Dark Link (He's an alternate form of a playable character just like Alph and the Koopalings; own announcer call, his name is listed as Dark Link, etc. Also, his sword, shield, and other weapons are aesthetically modified to resemble Dark Link's equivalents in the Zelda games. He is fully silent)


SAMUS: BOUNTY HUNTER EXTRAORDINAIRE
-Alt 1: Light Suit
-Alt 2: Fusion Suit
-Alt 3: Original Power Suit
-Alt 4: Dark Samus (Once again, full-fleged alt like Alph/The Koopalings. This would mean she couldn't be an assist trophy no more, but hey, playing as her is even better. Weapons altered to look more like Dark Samus' equivalents, and of course she has voice clips from the Metroid Prime series)


KIRBY: THE PINK PUFFBALL
-Alt 1: Shadow Kirby (once again, Alph/Koopalings styled alt; has his appearance from Kirby Triple Deluxe's Kirby Fighters mode. My friend was the one who came up with this, he's much more of a Kirby nerd than me)


FOX MCLOUD: LEADER OF STAR FOX
-Alt 1: Smash 64/Melee fox (with Melee voice clips)
-Alt 2: Star Fox Zero Design

Here are the Groom Marths from the recent Heroes update for those interested. This only furthers a case for a Groom Marth alt in Smash. It's just perfect: It would have exactly the same hurtbox (it's literally just Marth in a suit), nothing too flashy, he could keep most voice lines for less development strain, and Marth has had this costume multiple times now.

Villager Classic and Villager Modern as semi-clones. There's still more work to do with the character (where is my fishing rod? why can't I shoot my slingshot how it's supposed to go?), but you probably can't fit everything in one... so split 'em up! That way, older fans are satisfied and the logical inclusion of the new design still happens.

This is either the same thing as Marth's Project M alt or along the same lines. Either way, I'd support it. I prefer that style of costume when I mess around with him. Green is my favorite.

Basically, in the SF series, one of the trademark taunts the character Guile has is putting on and off his sunglasses.

So for Mario, it'd be removing his hat or for Link putting on his black hood. Stuff like that would be great.

That's also in Project M. Squirtle puts on the Squirtle Squad shades. They break if he gets hit. Agreed, though.
