Bit of a shame that gen 9 has a very good chance of missing the boat when it comes to getting a rep in Smash. It's probably obvious that I love Meowscarada, and it would make such a great rep for the gen! A lot of people want there to be a Grass type that isn't part of Pokemon Trainer so it stands on its own, and Meowscarada would be so fun as a fast-and-agile fighter with powerful flower bombs.

Alternatively, I wonder if they'd wanna do Miraidon and Koraidon in a similar vein to Mythra and Pyra. That would also make for a great way to rep the gen!

You know who sounds fun? Donphan. Spinny spinny spinny! I guess we do have a very spin-heavy character in Sonic, and I love Sonic... but a slow, heavyweight take on a spin-heavy moveset with all the Ground moves Donphan could provide sounds really fun to me. Since Rapid Spin now boosts speed, maybe it could even have the gimmick that it gains temporary speed boosts upon using Rapid Spin.

On the topic of heavyweights, most of my Pokemon suggestions are more heavy or right in between. Like Mario, Fox and DK, I prefer hard hitters over characters that feel stealthy, weak and fragile.

Donphan would definitely hit like Dillon. Its wheeling would be a joy.

Speaking of heavyweights, Tyranitar has also piqued my interest. Not only do we get our first pseudo-legendary, we can essentially play as a Godzilla expy. I feel like they could also have a special gimmick that revolves around its Sand Stream ability.

What about Dracovish? For Smash, do you think that Dracovish could be a good playable character for Smash or do you think it will feel or look any out of place? Why?

After given some thought, I've decided on my Pokemon Smash roster restricted to 12. I'm going off sheer uniqueness and creativity.

Magmar, Arcanine, Mr. Mime, Miltank, Aipom, Sudowoodo, Heracross, Scraggy, Cofagrigus, Mimikyu, Dhelmise, Flamigo.

Ngl, I squeezed a couple of my personal wants in while still perfectly neutral to the overall roster. Miltank would be all around fun to fight. Magmar's Recovery would work similarly to Dedede's. Extreme Speed would be Arcanine's Recovery. Sudoowodo would be the partially flexible fighter. Aipom's Recovery would work similarly to Ice Climbers. Scraggy would focus on mostly headbutting attacks. Dhelmise Recovery would imitate Link's hook shot. I'm also considering Mawile, Lickitung and Magearna as additions if I go for a Melee roster count.

Do you think that Gyarados might be a good fit for a playable fighter to join Smash?
Its currently difficult to imagine how Gyarados would work. Arbok would be better suited. I want Exeggutor in Smash, but I cannot imagine how it would grab on to any ledge, so burr.

I thought that Arbok wasn’t popular or interesting enough to actually join Smash for a playable fighter. And besides, it should best be an NPC Poké Ball summon, or a fightable NPC common enemy or boss opponent or a collectable NPC trophy.

Gyarados is unworkable for Smash tho. It can be a boss, but playable character wise, I just can't see anything. What you stated about Arbok can easily apply to Gyarados.

We aren't really basing Pokemon off of popularity in this topic, but rather what unique play styles they would bring that would make them innovating.

Speaking of most wanted pokemon, I really want to see:
1. Garchomp - look at him, he is literally a pseudo-legendary pokemon and he has a lot of moveset potential (Like he would use dragon & ground type moves). Heck, his final smash would turn itself into Mega Garchomp and his moveset would be buffed for while. Also his design is great and he would be mid-heavyweight all around fighter (just like in Pokemon Unite).
(Oh, he would be also nowhere tall as Samus/Zero Suit Samus and he would the second tallest pokemon in the game)
2. Skeledirge - Another quadrupedal fighter and he would bring a lot of fire-type moves in the game. Plus we get another crocodile fighter after K. Rool. Also his singing skills would appear as one of special moves in his moveset.
3. Sceptile - He totally makes sense and a gen 3 rep in smash would be somewhat awesome idea. Also he would use a lot of grass type moves and his body type would be similar to Yoshi's due to being both a dinosaur-like creatures. Eat your heart out, Greninja.

I've got a Pokemon in mind; Zoroark!
Currently there are no Pokemon fighters that originated from Generation 5 so I'd reckon I go with Zoroark as it's a popular Pokemon not just in general, but alongside its pre-evolved form being the first Pokemon of their generation to be revealed with the movie that features both of and the three Generation 2 legendary Pokemon. Another note on why I chose Zoroark is its Illusion ability, it can only be activated once by activating any taunt button per battle and it lasts for 30 seconds with 1.25x damage multiplier.

I love Buzzwole o_o This guy has really won my heart. And I'm absolutely devastated I misjudged him at one point. He's an amazing Pokemon with a beaming personally and I would've loved his play style in Smash. Give him Power Up Punch priority and Leech Life as a slow hard hitter. If not a playable role, he'd make for a cool and interesting boss.

Additional Pokémon
Hattena: She would be fun to play as, she has great usage of psychic attacks and teleporting recovery and she is so cute
Overquil: A Pufferfish that’s very spiky and has both dark and poison attacks would be fun, also we get a Legends: Arceus rep
Tinkaton: She would be fun to play as, and she is a hammer user, giving her uniqueness to the cast
Scream Tail: If that doesn’t say Jigglypuff Echo, I don’t know what is

I've got a couple of ideas floating around for different Pokemon, but one of my personal favourites would probably be Ogerpon. There's a few different Pokemon out there with the general concept of "change type / state during the match!" but I reckon Ogerpon's unique method of actually showcasing that by quick-changing its masks would be a lot of fun. Plus, it'd showcase its changes by doing things like changing the appearance of its vines, imbuing its cudgeon or its kicks with different elements... and maybe even having unique Final Smashes using Terastalisation, which'd change for each mask!
  • Teal Mask would be activated with its neutral special, Spiky Shield, which'd completely surround Ogerpon in a plant-based shield that protrudes outward from it and momentarily stuns the enemies that it hits with the, uh... spikes. Maybe you could even steal a little element from Horn Leech and have it recover a small amount of health from opponents that it hits? It'd be the fastest but weakest of the bunch, excelling with ground speed and attack speed, but generally being better at poking and some basic strings... though lacking in kill power significantly in order to offset this.

  • Wellspring Mask would be activated with its side special, Bubble Beam, which would be a projectile you can charge by holding - before automatically being fired when released. It'd have multiple bubbles following a larger, "front" one - the larger one momentarily stuns opponents to let the other, smaller bubbles hit them afterward, before they get launched. The mask itself would be similar to Teal in that it's got great attack speed - in fact, better than Teal's - but lacks a little in terms of movement speed, offsetting this with its exceptional combo potential with water-based attacks. That said, it also lacks in knockback.

  • Hearthflame Mask would be activated with its up special, Flame Wheel, which'd envelop Ogerpon entirely in a wheel of fire before making them rapidly spin - either upward if used in the air, or along the ground like Rollout if used on the ground - multi-hitting and dealing fire damage either way. The mask has probably the highest outright attack power overall, with some attacks gaining fire-based effects that allow it to multi-hit in order to rapidly build up damage. That said, while it's also quite fast, it lacks somewhat in knockback - rewarding aggression.

  • Cornerstone Mask would be activated with its down special, Rock Blast, which would have Ogerpon stamp on the ground to bring up small boulders that'd be flung out from the ground on both sides. This mask would be by far the slowest of the bunch, offset by being heavy and having some passive knockback resistence akin to Bowser's Tough Guy (but to a much lesser extent), but its damage output isn't massive - offset by dealing pretty massive knockback.
I dunno, I just think this'd be neat. I guess there's other Gen IX Pokemon that are either more outright popular in discussion for smash, like Meowscarada, Tinkaton or Gholdengo, but Ogerpon would go pretty hard. To be honest, the only issue I think springs to mind with it is the colour of its body - which I'd just keep as green by default, then have blue, red and grey as alts for more visual clarity between characters.

Nidoking could have represented Poison types. It seems defining enough. It's moveset potential is written all over it

I did have some heavy hype for Sceptile back then when we had S4 DLC. I even made a mockup idea with a detailed move-set idea 'n everything.

However, my desire for a grass startermon has pretty much sailed. I'm not the biggest fan of wanting starters as playable fighters anymore.

I didn't surf this thread, so IDK if anyone else has said it, but a Pokémon I would love to see in Smash Bros. is Deoxys. Hear me out.
Deoxys smash template.png

  1. TL;DR Being a Pokéball summon doesn't outright de-confirm itself for the next game. Having content in the game can be better than none at all.
    -
Contrary to what may be said about Pokémon who are already a Pokéball, such as, "They're already just a summon. They're practically de-confirmed as a playable fighter." –– which could be something I may agree to an extent.. but I don't for future titles. While it's true that Deoxys is de-confirmed currently, and has been a summon for the past three Smash titles (Brawl, S4, & Ult), this doesn't count the DNA Pokémon out for a chance to become a fighter in the next game. In a way, being around this long proves they like Deoxys enough to keep them in the game at all. It's good having publicity and stick around as content in the game through several means in previous titles as both a summon and as a trophy. Currently in Ultimate, they're both a summon and a spirit. Deoxys could've been cut as a summon like both Meowth and Scizor were--just to be brought back as a tease instead. Either way can be seen as a sting if you're a fan of the idea. Lastly, for a slight sliver of hope--I'll just say that Charizard started out as a summon for both 64 and Melee. Though, that logic doesn't hold up so well considering he's one of the most iconic mons of all time. It was probably bound to happen. Naturally, Deoxys is definitely no Charizard.

  2. TL;DR Other Pokémon may have a vision or idea of how they mesh as a fighter. Yet, just Deoxys' forme change ability alone is dynamic & interesting.
    -
Out of the current lineup of Pokéball summons I see in Ult, I think Deoxys would be among the upper echelon of the most if not thee most interesting candidate fighter. Notable mons that I can see having potential and the vision of fun to develop can include: Alolan Raichu, Meowth, Eevee(needs eeveelution gimmick), Scizor, Gardevoir, Abomasnow, Darkrai, Zoroark, Genesect, Bewear, Mimikyu, & Marshadow.
For Deoxys––just from gameplay mechanics and its fighter abilities alone? Deoxys has so much. The DNA Pokémon could have a ton of development love on paper, but it comes down to how much time the team want to put into the fighter slot. So, I'll assume that Deoxys gets the best-case scenario.
So the fighter ability is it can change formes. To give an idea of that.. imagine different colored meteorites near your damage meter. Each colored meteorite represents a forme with its own aurora color, and Deoxys can choose between its own Normal forme, and/or three others: Attack, Defense, and Speed forme. To describe it, it would be like switching Pokémon as Pokémon Trainer, but perhaps a bit faster around Pyra & Mythra's swap. And that forme switch feels like Shulk activating Speed, or Shield, or Buster+Smash Arts. But unlike Shulk's Arts, and more like the Pokémon switch---the Attack, Defense, and Speed formes are visually morphing Deoxys' hurtbox and its appearance, and would not only differ in parameters as well as frame data.. but also have different specials and slightly varied move-set changes too. That change is somewhat similar akin to Byleth's directional weapons and Corrin's dragon moves animated, but in the form of Deoxys' appendages morphing into whatever it prefers to use for the battle (Normal continues using its tentacle DNA arms. Attack can use swords, spears, and spikes with slash fx. Defense can use shields and bash with them. Heavier weight with more emphasis on being a tank that slowly heals and absorbs attacks and can counter. Speed gets so much movement speed that the aurora after effects of it moving fast become the attacking hitboxes. Rather than attacking with its tentacles, the body itself is more often the source.) The formes having clear weaknesses would feel similar to Monado Arts, but the weaknesses are personified with the altered move-set for each forme. Each forme's specials being different is something that Monado Arts, Pokémon Switching, or Pythra swapping don't replicate exactly. In other words, Deoxys' formes take a page out of everyone's book, helping it write a good book from inspiration alone. A total of four formes sets Deoxys up to be a super-solid fighter slot bundle because Deoxys would be the same character... but play as four different Deoxys playstyles––and that's only scratching the surface of inclusion merits––albeit is one of Deoxys' best merits.

  3. TL;DR One's Pokémon choice can fill multiple "holes" of the roster, and why for x reasons. Deoxys checks off a lot of fan-favoring merit boxes too.
    -
My Deoxys pick mostly stems from the vision of forme changes coming to fruition, since they'd make them absolutely fun and unique––despite being something similar, yet different than what may have seen before. Though. to the masses, fans of Pokémon that like Smash desire their favorite mon to be a fighter. They want to match a pattern––someone who will contribute merits to the already existing roster of Smashmons––or for the franchise/generational representation. Whatever it is that fans crave. A good example is someone wanting Meowscarada. They believe they'd be a fun concept because they'd be like a Magician archetype of a fighter––something they believe isn't represented well or at all. They also want them because they'd be a good choice for a grass starter. They see Charizard and Greninja in the game, so it makes sense to them to want that type chart completion. The bonus icing on their cake is they'd be the third dark type to complete the "Type Trio Trinity" pattern that started with Greninja, and currently with Incineroar now.
Deoxys––to me––also possesses these type of criteria. To name a few things, Deoxys:
-hails from Generation III––the Hoenn region. A generation/region that is currently unrepresented in Smash's fighting roster.
-could, and would be the first mythical Pokémon to be a playable fighter. Additionally, they'd also be the roster's first extraterrestrial Pokémon.
-would showcase the first time a Pokémon's base stats and learn-set differed depending on its form from the mainline game titles, & Smash now too.

  4. TL;DR Deoxys' "inclusion hindrances" aren't valid counterpoints against its inclusion in Smash's roster.
    -
I think many have gotten into discussion about who we all want from the plethora of Pokémon to be a playable fighter in Smash. It's a common, yet great subject. Everyone's got a craving, and someone's taste to be made real happens to be their Maractus, Tinkaton, or Garchomp. I have seen, and I have had discussions from time to time about the topic. And when certain Pokémon––or even when any Pokémon are mentioned at all.. there's at least some form of gate-keeping behind it, turning it into some kind of debate. Maybe I'm causing that with this post--Iunno. Personally, despite Smash's fighter roster being big, it's not large in comparison to the huge universe of Pokémon. Smash hasn't hit a 100-fighter-sized roster, whereas Pokémon has over 1,000. Even so, an overabundance of mons can be too much. Not wanting to have too many mons is fair. There should absolutely be a Pokémon platform-fighting game, or sumn though. But back to the topic---
I have seen like-minded fans approve and praise Deoxys, but I've also seen the standoffish opinions about 'em too. Common ones include:
-"Deoxys is a psychic type. We already have Mewtwo in the game, and we're not replacing Mewtwo."
--??? I've seen this, and my reply of reason is usually the same. While I agree that Deoxys is a psychic type... that doesn't they can't coexist in the same roster with Mewtwo along with the other mons. This 'type gatekeeping rule' is already broken with the electric, water, fire, and dark types in the game. It's plausible that fans want as many different types to be represented in Smash as possible, but the track record is already scuffed from the overabundance of starters. Even two dark types are in--even if they're secondary dark types, lol. They all co-exist in the same roster. While there are probably plenty of psychic types that can make great fighters... I'll stay on topic and just say that I think we can afford to have two psychic mons.

    -"Deoxys doesn't have a chance."
--This echoes what my first point was about, but Deoxys being in smash as a non-playable fighter isn't inherently a bad thing. Imagine being a huge fan of Bandai Namco, and knowing they co-developed both Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and WiiU, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Mind you, they have a plethora of swell IPs like Dark Souls. Digimon. Katamari. Klonoa. Soulcalibur. Tales. Xenosaga.––Then to realize we only have two characters--albeit PAC-MAN and Kazuya are pretty good character choices. Now imagine the fans that have wanted a Pokémon to be playable, and it has yet to happen. But to be so desert-dry, that they're not even included in the game. Not even as an item. A trophy. Sticker. Spirit. Stage element. Enemy. Boss. Nothing at all. When I was heavy on wanting Sceptile for S4 DLC... the closest Sceptile or Grovyle ever got beforehand... was when Treecko was a SSBBrawl trophy. That was it. Hurts, right? Point is--if Deoxys were in the game at all--even if they were just part of a stage's background--that would be at least something. But they have more than that. Brawl provided Deoxys as a new addition, who not only had a summon, but also had a trophy and even a sticker. In Smash 4, they had both a summon, and a trophy. Lastly, for Ultimate, we're provided a summon & a spirit. They've been a Pokéball summon for several Smash titles in a row. Being in the game in any form shows that there's enough appeal. That there's merit to have Deoxys somewhere in the game at all---and it's more than just one thing, too. Mii costumes and Assist trophies are essentially the 'runner-ups' as potential candidates, in a way. Look at Lyn. Shadow. Waluigi. Look at all the cool and iconic Mii costumes. Pokéballs are Pokémon Assist Trophies. In that way, that helps show that Deoxys is not only impossible--but they're relevant and likeable enough to stick around.

-"Deoxys wouldn't work. They'd just be a Mewtwo Echo Fighter."
--A very outlandish take, but I have seen this before. This ultimately comes down to them both being psychic types. And they're both legendaries. But if anyone knows a lick of both, they'd know that the two are massively different. Deoxys statistically cannot be Mewtwo's Echo because they have fundamentally different body types and personalities. Therefore, their animations wouldn't be identical in the slightest, which means Mewtwo & Deoxys would play completely different.

    -"Deoxys isn't that popular."
--I don't know how credible Bulbapedia is, but we all know if it, and their "Pokemon of the Year" for 2020 listing shows that Deoxys was only Hoenn's 23rd most popular--getting dwarfed by Rayquaza, Gardevoir, Flygon, Sceptile, & Blaziken. However, it then states that a 2021 voting took place, and Deoxys jumped all the way up to Hoenn's 12th most popular. There's also this really good reddit post called, "Favourite Pokémon survey 2024." If you click on the pastebin from the comments, you'll find the raw full list, and while Deoxys isn't ranked highly.. they did tie with Ivysaur who is in Smash already. Although, from the Gen III group, all of these Pokemon ranked higher in popularity, including: Breloom, Mawile, Milotic, Salamence, Absol, Aggron, Mudkip, Sceptile, Blaziken, Swampert, Flygon, Metagross, Rayquaza, and Gardevoir. So while I'm fine with agreeing that Deoxys isn't as popular of a Pokémon in its own respective region.. I want to say that popularity isn't the most prominant factor. Jigglypuff and Pichu––in my subjective eyes––are not popular because they are innately favored like the other mons. But rather, they're popular now because they have history of being in Smash already. This same effect is easy to replicate. If Deoxys gets into Smash, their popularity skyrockets by default just because they're playable in a Nintendo All-Stars platform fighter.

  5. TL;DR Deoxys' forme change gimmick isn't the one and only notable merit for their inclusion. They have several pros if they joined Smash.
    -
So I've talked before about why forme changes are so cool, and why that alone sells Deoxys as a fighter choice. However, it doesn't actually just stop there. Like the other examples of type pairs that co-exist together, like Charizard & Incineroar.. they both provide different characters. Playstyles. Personality with expression. Content.. them both being different generations. You get the point. So what else does Deoxys' hypothetical inclusion give us? What else can Deoxys bring to the table? Well, lots of things:
-Deoxys is like Mewtwo and Lucario in that there's a whole movie that Deoxys debuted in called Destiny Deoxys.

-Deoxys was the first Pokemon to get its own unique battle theme. And it's pretty good too! Just getting this track alone would be awesome.

-Based on Pokedex entries.. association with Suicune is optional, and could be involved in some way with a Pokémon stage set to have gorgeous auroras in the scenery. Unlike some Pokéball summons not being possible on some stages.. Pokemon that have an ice attribute to them like Abomasnow, Articuno, Kyurem, Suicune, and Alolan Vulpix would appear more often in this aurora-night sky stage.

-Realistically, Deoxys is known for its association with Rayquaza. They're always seen fighting each other, so it's more plausible to have a stage near the ozone layer and/or in outer space. And because this hypothetical scenario involves Rayquaza.. that means...

-...that Rayquaza could return as anything. They could be a stage boss. Or just a stage element. However, Deoxys being a candidate means that a resurgence of Rayquaza content returning in Smash would make for an absolutely amazing boss battle. An updated battle--where Rayquaza can be a boss again. And like the pre-requisites were for Giga Bowser in Melee's Adventure Mode.. if you complete the classic mode route with either a great time/score, or do specific conditions.. the Rayquaza battle can become a Mega Rayquaza super boss battle for exclusively Deoxys' classic mode. <3

-Lastly, Deoxys is a extraterrestrial lifeform. So it needing to play any particular role or be pinned as a villain is not absolutely required, but it is not surprising to expect in the slightest. Something that I'm sure a community would probably welcome. Some morphing, mutating alien that's invading the Smashverse.

And that's the gist of it, mostly. What do we all think about Deoxys?
