Online "Play Anyone" is perfect

So, basically, the idea of this feature is to allow you to play quick rounds of Smash Bros. against many real people without any real fuss or setup whatsoever.

Now, I know many of you are disappointed with the "Play Anyone" feature, because you don't know who you're fighting, but in my opinion, it's actually very clever.

I've given it a think, and I've decided: I don't NEED to know who I'm fighting. Hundreds of people are going to be playing every day! I don't care who they are! I can't be BOTHERED messing around in a foyer being subjected to insults from people I've never met!!

I HATE the general online community!! They're a bunch of absolute ****s!!

The way "Play Anyone" is now, I'll probably be using the online features a lot more than if they were like Xbox Live. All I want to do is play. No fuss.

If I want to play with specific people, I'll add them on my friends list! Somebody's going to set up a Brawl tournement website, so those on the tournement scene will be able to distribute their friend codes if they wish.

"Play Anyone" is an online mode that suits people who don't like playing games online, for the same reasons I don't. For that reason, complaining about it would be selfish.

I agree with you for the most part but I HOPE they add some kind of "stats". I don't care about my how many losses I have but I would much rather play people around my level then a complete noob.

You've convinced me. At first i was very disappointed, but what you say is true. There are so many websites that will have smash tourneys online.

it actually good that we can play online players, though its going to get annoying not konw who your are playing, so each time you play may be a really bad noob and the matches is a waste of time. But on the other hand that would make your ranking or record easy to get better. Overall the Brawl on online should be a good hit with lots of players.

I kinda agree with you...but I kinda disagree on some views you have. 95% of the online community for Smash Bros. are not arrogant pricks. You're probably only thinking about the small percentage of people that will voice their opinions that you don't agree with. This play With Anyone mode just seems really convenient for beating the crap out of Anyone when you feel like it. A lot of the people who are complaining about this are actually whining about not knowing what 'noobs' they're beating up, which I think is just weird.

I love Nintendo as much as anyone, but this is NOT a good thing. It kinda seems that you're calling sour grapes. Honestly, there would be nothing to lose from at least being able to see the names of the people you play. It would, in fact, be excellent if you could find someone online who's good and add him to your friends list so you could play him again. Additionally, it really wouldn't have been that hard to allow for 1 vs 1s online, and it's just illogical that Nintendo wouldn't implement it. I'll enjoy the game, but Nintendo isn't showing that they care about online, and you guys are making excuses for them.

I think the main complaint is more that we're going to be facing people of all skill levels, and have no control over it.

almost every day I play smash64 with random people on pj64k, and I really never take any names or anything. I'm pretty satisfied with the brawl online formula

The inability to play random 1v1's and to play with anyoen matches with items turned off or on entirely is rather irritating. It could have been done much better, but I'll live with the way it is. Theres a large smash community at my school anyway and we have a games room with a Wii, so finding random people to play isn't too hard :). Still though, their system is FAR from perfect.

TC is dead wrong.

Your in denial if you really think the basic brawl is good. Here are the problems...

You don't get the OPTION to even know who you are playing against. This means if you have a good match with someone you can never play them again.

You don't pick the items.

You don't pick the stage.

You can't pick the time or stock.

You can't do one on one matches.

You just get this stupid lottery.

You don't know when your playing a computer (it doesn't tell you).

And my favorite part... no ranking system

Not having rooms is stupid. Period. If you had a room you could still play 2 min matches with all items if you wanted. You could play 4 stock matches with no items. You could play smash balls with a 7 min time limit. You could play with just pokeballs on Hyrule temple. Nobody loses when it comes to rooms, everyone gets to play their way. If basic brawl is all With Anyone has, then I'll be be... very upset. I mean this is the biggest Nintendo game ever... and... ughh. There must be something like "advanced brawl" because not having any options is terrible.

And to address the predictable counter arguments.

It's free what do you expect?
Sony's online is free, but they still have rooms, rooms aren't even complex.

Just play with friends?
I will play with friends but I can only have 64 of them and sometimes I want to play with my rules against someone I don't know. Is that really so much to ask? Hell, I'll be honest, sometimes I just want to own a newbie in a one on one match.

Your just whining!
Your just a fanboy in denial, not having rooms is pathetic.

BTW, Puffin knows what he's talking about.

Hmm, a pretty simple concept indeed. Yes, let's just connect and play the darn game! That's what games are for, right?

Games are for fun, rooms are fun. Not being able to chose the way you play... isn't fun.
Not being able to choose the way you play against 'noobs' that you get no real challenge out of playing against and therefore won't be playing against all that often when there is an option to guarantee playing by your own rules against people of your skill level by getting friend codes which is an often you'll get a better challenge out of anyway...not fun?

We already talked about this, and your dropping most of my arguments. Rooms help everyone. With Anyone includes me. Why can't I play anyone with my rules unless they are my friend? It's not like only "newbs" will use With Anyone. If there were rooms, TONS of people would use with anyone. And by the way, the run on sentence is funny, but a little hard to follow.

Geometry Wars Galaxies (a game I just bought) has great leader boards, and your high scores are sent whenever you connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi. In this case, I found it very effective and cool to see the high scores, and I'm certainly going to try and work my way to the top of those leader boards.

But someone with a 10,000,000 wins and 600,000 losses doesn't really excite me as much as a high score. It even kind of bothers me that someone would make it a WoW-obsession to just amp up their numbers. It was annoying in Mario Kart DS seeing people with thousands of wins and losses; like, trying to wrap my mind around how much time they grinded up just trying to change a digit is just crazy.

I know you're probably thinking, how is that any better than someone who takes any decent game to a professional level, because they would have to put a ton of time into that; but, it really is a different when someone stays up all night in a dimly lit room playing an online game to change their ranking or win/loss record. I just think there are better ways someone could spend their time. Like eating Cheese Whiz on toast.

If they come up with some kind of ranking boards, g-r-r-reat, but I'm not really interested. As for communication and names online, I wouldn't mind seeing that kind of stuff. Trash talk in online games is hilarious. Even a lobby where you could join games that matched your preferences would be kind of cool. But I'm not lost without these features.

I know whatcha mean. But I think Sakurai's ultimate intention with this With Anyone mode is to have quick and easy access to a quick random fight with anyone else when none of your friends are available (or if you don't like your friends at the moment). When you're playing with 3 other random people, it's only fair for the rules to be voted on 'fairly'. Ya know? It's more like just a random experience. I understand the way you want it, but that would be something entirely different, though I doubt it would be implemented in our final product.

You see people, run-on sentences are HARD TO FOLLOW.

I really doubt that Sakurai is so stupid that he won't allow people any options, there has to be something like "Advanced Brawl". However, I understand what your saying, but rooms aren't complex at all, they're quick and simple. And playing a one on one match isn't hard at all. The point is, if there's no "Advanced Brawl" then Sakurai frankly phucked up, because rooms would have been simple and they would have made everyone happy.

I suppose. But I'd like to assume that he did think of it, but Nintendo didn't want it. He is like a 'god', you know.

The online mode for people who don't like to play online? Maybe stay offline?
Online is so much better when people can't call you "noob"

And then its even better imagining their frustration as you pwn them over and over.

Also offline you can't play with a variety of people/styles/and salad

I've been thinking about this game a lot, and I honestly can't think of a good reason Nintendo wouldn't want rooms. Rooms don't mean a ranking system, they don't mean you have to talk, they aren't dangerous, they make everyone happy, they aren't complex. Can you, honestly, not being an @sshole, I might have missed something.

The only reason why I don't like Play Anyone is because of the lack of ranks.

But it's not that big of a deal. Brawl's online is awesome, I don't see why so many people disagree.

I'm channeling the spirits of all Nintendo employees as we speak. In actuality, I do not know. But Sakurai did say he and his team have "thought of everything" and he did mention rooms specifically in the update. What does this mean? I'm channeling the spirit of Sakurai as we speak.

I like Play Anyone, cuz if youre friends arent around, and you would normally just play against a computer, and pick a guy you KNOW you can beat, you can now play against a real person who thinks! However if they leave you wont even know it (unless playing with PokeBalls turned on lol)

Dropping arguments? Are you a debater?

Anyway, I agree, rooms are 1 way online could be better for more serious competitive players, but pandering to us is not really Nintendo's top priority when designing the "With Anyone" mode. You have to admit, the interface is really simple and easy to use, it's probably designed to be n00b friendly. I'm not saying i's perfect, just that we shouldn't really expect anything better from Nintendo, given what they've done with the Wii, which is aiming at people who dont play many games.

Whatever it is, Nintendo really does have a problem with it. I'm sure they've seen the masses of uproar when it started to dawn on people that they were taking this kind of approach to online play. However, I think it's just going to be one of those things that people come to accept about Nintendo, like the 5 years of no online Nintendo experience that we endured with the Gamecube while the rest of the consoles didn't.

They're definitely not too stupid to figure out how to make a coherent lobby system, or hire someone to do it for them, but the route that they have because.. well.. who knows.

Online play isn't the selling point for the Wii; once I had my DS, I knew what we were getting from the Wi-Fi service almost 2 years ago. Clubhouse Games was the nail in the coffin, I bought that game thinking that it was going to have the PictoChat service like it advertised, but when playing against random people on the web, all it did was give me a list of already-made-messages to send to others.

But, I bought the Wii anyways.

I don't really care about knowing who I'm playing (if I want to play someone specific, I can use FCs), but the main problem is that you can't have game rooms and therefore game settings are very limited. I want tournament rules for my "play anyone" mode, not 4-way FFAs with computers.

I actually have to say I pretty much agree with this. I never was big on the idea of dealing with random people, and I certainly don't like dealing with the idiots that are so rampant out there. Really i don't mind this, and fighting real people certainly beats the CPU. I don't really care to know them, I just want to come, fight, and leave. I'm not saying you people have to like it, and I certainly see why you wouldn't, but especially for a free, add-free service... I can't really complain for getting free stuff. I don't look gift horses in the mouth.

Also, I happen to enjoy sour grapes.
