yes I had this exact problem!
Somtimes it wouldn't reverse the laser and sometimes it would revers without me wanting to. I basically had a white controller with a dodgy control stick and one controller with shoddy shoulder buttons and had to combine the two to make a good controller.
I pretty much fixed it yesterday by breaking in my controller lol

I got a white controller off amazon and it's been working really well for me, except the L and R buttons seem to not be quite as good as on my purple controllers. I'm also not used to how the joystick feels. On my one purple controller the stick is a little loose and I'm used to it being that way. I'd say the white controller is good over all.

Is it a first party controller? Just curious.

Nice. The only kinds I can find are either used Nintendo controllers or brand new brandless controllers. Guess ebay is a poor place for GC controllers.

Idk. When I checked, I found only brandless ones. There's a few that are 1st party, but it's like $30 + $8 shipping.

Amazon has white ones for $30 free shipping.

This new control stick mechanism interests me. Perhaps I'll buy a white one just to see it.

Nintendo's shoulder button system has always sucked, I can't see how they could possibly make it worse. Gosh I hate the long mushy trigger pull they have, why can't they make the pull short and crisp? I realize you can remove the spring to achieve that effect, but that's somewhat taboo... What's wrong with the white triggers that makes them worse than the others? I hear they can be tough to press from certain angles but that's definitely a problem I've had with all my other colors too (I have black, blue, orange, and silver)

Although I'm not a big fan of the mushy triggers, they do allow light shielding so that's kind of a plus.

My controller is my best friend <3

Ahhhh switching controllers is one of those terrible days for melee players. I've had the same purple controller since 05. I know the analog doesnt have much time left =( but its the best controller in the world. It plays perfectly. I have a black one but it sucks... I dread the day i have to buy either a silver one or import the dreaded white one D:

You might as well kill yourself now.
Without a GC controller, life is pointless.

Or ya know... buy a new one...

I personally favor purple controllers. I've only owned one but to date it's been my best one.
Black is close second, not a fan of silver, going to buy a white.

Reverse laser problems is probably due to the control stick flicking back to the opposite direction when you let go, to work around this you might need to get use to pushing the control stick only slightly in the direction you want to laser in, to avoid the recoil hitting the other direction.

if you didn't already know this ;|

I'm bout to order a white controller for me and a friend

Can't you light shield with L/R + Z? Not sure...
Yeah you can do it with Z, but what happens usually is that you have to hold Z, which means that you'll be whiffing a grab before it comes out (can be punished). Unless you buffer the Z-shield via dodge rolling or something, but Idk it's pretty awkward. :/

I've never tried L/R + Z at the exact same time (consciously), if that's what you mean. I don't think it works though.

The way I do "Z-shields" is roll then hold Z afterwards. This leads to the largest lightshield you can make without error. I'm trying to incorporate this into my anti-Marth edge game.

l/r+z at the same time grabs iirc...

I Z cancel, so lightshielding w/ Z is second nature
Though right after I usually switch to light shield with L so I can wavedash out

where do you order them at?
I ordered mine from play-asia
ordered 2 for me and a friend
shipping cost 21$ @.@
1-5 day delivery

So you l-cancel with z? Just making sure that's what you mean. Do you bring up the lightshield after you do an aerial or something? Is it possible to lightshield with Z while standing still (without having to whiff grabs)?

yea I L-cancel with Z
and yea, if I feel I need to shield after the L cancel, I can just continue holding Z.
Lightshielding has it's disadvantages, but when you don't shield grab, and don't like to UB OoS it usually works in your favor

And afaik it's not possible to use Z to lightshield without buffering it through some other action
though whenever I lightshield edgehog marths I always roll and hold Z.

Also m y white controllers arrived today.

They shipped on the 24th, arrived on the 25th.

I'm hyped.

I bought a white one

they are constructed a bit differently, and there was a thread detailing how to refurbish your joystick if it gets too loose for your liking, which only works with the white controllers.

But I also never had problems with my silver one which I did buy new some time back, until the R/L button started sticking :(

hmmm, looking through this thread i've constructed this tier list

1. Black
2. Indigo/White??
3. Silver
4. Spice (orange)
5. everything else
6. Wavebird

My indigo controller's analog stick is starting to tear again so i'm guessing I should go for Black rather than White?

Fresh out of the box
I have no complaints about it. none.
Was able to adapt quickly and easily, and have the same if not better consistency with my techs as my loaner black one which I got pretty use too.
The R, which I use both to shield and wavedash out of it, works perfectly
