Ok, The Samus vs Young Link Thread. To Start off my Young Link vs Samus doesn't go that well. My friend mains Samus and ***** me time to time. Beam/missle combo cannot be dodged, so that i think. and Down-B combos the hell out of me. Beam(When Charged) > all projectiles....so hmm....Any Suggestions?..

you can catch bombs with Z??? o_O and all this time i've been doing it with R+a.. what a waste of time
You never knew that? R+a is the same as throw :p

Here is my question: You actually made an "official discussion thread" about Young Link in the midst of a Young Link forum?

I say Y.Link is kind of protected
You could try to hit the missles w/ your attacks
I still don't get how your bud is hitting you w/ missles the deku shield should take care of that and the Charge shot!
.....Ok try this against the Charge shot: when an arrow is fires it stays on the ground for a sec and when a charge shot is fired it hits the arrow=stops it completely
Charge shot coming from the air Y.Links bombs stops it also
For Y.Link-just keep up w/ the projectile game!
Rangs from arrows
Bombs to rangs

I still don't get how there is an official YL disscussion thread in the YL forums.
Because we as young Link players can grew stronger with new knowledge that may increase young Link's metagame and help you to know your matchups better so you may win.

As you can see Laijin this is a small list of the the MANY threads very SIMILAR to this one. Almost every charachter forum has one and it can be extremely useful and handy for neccesary knowledge to gain in order to win. I bet you anything you did not know young Link had an attack that came out in 1 frame, so new useful knowledge like this can be spread simply with all the great young Link player's minds coming together in one thread for absolute **** >=)

In fact, Laijin, I would encourage you to help distribute advice and discuss the various topics about young Link if you could. I would greatly appreciate it. You, like me, have much experience with many of young Link's matchups in tournaments so you would be a useful asset and another great young Link player's mind to help contribute to this all - purpose - thread =)

pretty much

but we can also discuss various aspects about young Link that may be helpful for improvement with young Link like I said above.

Chip.. kindly explain what CRUBing is to quiksliv here... I kinda forgot :p
Alright

Beam/missle combo cannot be dodged, so that i think. and Down-B combos the hell out of me. Beam(When Charged) > all projectiles....so hmm....Any Suggestions?..

Projectiles are something you'll probably want to have in my opinion. Why?

Well, boomerang spamming will clash with missiles pretty simple and you can Catch-Reload-Unleash-Boomerang again (a.k.a. CRUB'ing ). CRUBing is used when as soon as you catch the boomerang, you release it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and he keep repeating it. Only use this against Samus when you both are far away from eachother and are having a spam war; this will be the only way to approach her thus otherwise. CRUBing is most often faster to get out than Samus can use her Missles . . . and if you're close enough, and you have a bomb in your hand, then you can throw it at Samus after a missle and boomerang collide. If you hit with the bomb, then it's time for comboing son >=)

Now remember though, the boomerang isn't the only thing that can collide with missles. Missles have really, REALLY weak priority so just about anything will go straight up through them. Bomb, Nair, dash attack are all great ways of going through projectiles. A good strategy at the beginning of the match is to start CRUB'ing the missles and then when you get close enough you start SHFFL'ing Nairs toward her. Another option is to CRUB her (and if the Samus is smart at all she'll be missle canceling on platforms or at least full hop double missling on FD) then full hop Nair to cancel the top missle shafts coming your way and fast fall toward her on the same jump with another Nair. Either way that you do it, you'll reach Samus eventually. If you succesfully land that Nair on Samus she'll be most likely CC'ing the attack. After she CC's the attack she'll most likely d tilt (or d smash at high %) to start a combo on you. Samus will almost never grab you because her grab is garbage and will almost never actually grab because the attack comes out at 18 frames. All you got to do is sheild the d tilt and then grab her out of your sheild. :chuckle: Now this is the good part: your grabs can wreak **** on Samus. At 0 - 10%ish, throw her up and start comboeing her with Up airs. At a little aroung the 20%ish mark and above start d throwing her -> uptilts for new combos at this percent. At high percents (like 100% or above) go for a d throw -> Nair. But remember that Samus' upB out of sheild/CC is ridiculously FAST and makes her invincible for a few frames at the beginning of the attack. Just remember to play smart when pressuring Samus' sheild and that you need to space your attacks properly so that you won't be hit by the upB out of sheild. For comboeing bomb -> uptilts and Nairs can work great on her. Up airs do good jobs of keeping her away and racking damage up as well.

As for fully charged up B beams, just play aggressive and don't give Samus time to charge up B. If she does happen to get it fully charged, then play evasive and stay cautious to not get hit by running, jumping, and spamming around or just play it safe and block it all with your sheild. Another way is shooting an arrow simply in front of you and it might absorb the full shot of the blast (not completely sure). Although, I know simply standing in place with your Deku Sheild in front of you that it will block the whole

For recovering throw bombs at her if she decides to edgehog -> Bair or whatever arial to kill you. This, as always, will force her to roll up or get hit by the bomb. If Samus decides to spam missles as an edgeguard, then Nair out of your tumble or double jump Nair to destroy the missles. I'm 99% sure you won't get a scratch if you Nair through the missles.

Young Link can destroy Samus' bomb recovery. Projectiles do a good job of disrupting her bombs and setting them off balance and timing for her to get useful jumps out of them. All the while, you can be racking up damage with the bomb, and if she gets close enough to the edge, then D smash a non - sweetspot or jump off the edge and Nair her to her doom before a upB or grapple recovery comes

Conclusion: don't play dumb around Samus when you're both near and far away from her. Young Link's spam > than Samus spam, so use that to your advantage. Be cautious around her sheild with well spaced Nairs/Fairs/Jabs so you don't get a d tilt, D smash, or upB right in the face. Be smart in your own sheild and don't stay in it for too long when missles are flying out, but be patient and campy with Nairs and projectiles when your on the defensive run. It takes a while to kill Samus, but just play consistent with combos which should be played off from a bomb, utilt, Uair, Nair, or a grab etc. and be scary with projectile, Nair, and D smash edgeguarding.

I repeated myself in some parts of this advice but oh well

What is Young Link's easiest matchup?
Bowser

Actually to be honest, it's hard to say. Of course I would say Bowser is probably easier to play, than say , Pichu or Kirby because he's such a gigantic target to make him more susceptible to a spamming campy young Link.

I haven't played a good Pichu before, but I have played Gimpy's Bowser.

right.. it was catch-reload- UNLEASH-boomerang.. riight i remember now... lol

Ima have to say yl's easiest match-up is kirby since he is way to easy to combo.. sure bowser is a bigger target but it takes longer to kill him and if he's lucky/skilled can catch you in a powerful move... however kirby doesn't have any powerful moves.. just a good recovery.. and knowing that yl's edgeguard owns... that shouldn't be a problem.

I disagree with Marth. A smart marth that actually blocks/avoids projectiles and knows how to pressure you is harder to play against

Not really. :\ Marth is actually fairly easy. I've even played against KoreanDJ and Mew2King's Marths and pretty much went even with them(I bought them down to 1 stock each). lol. Epic battles.

Young Link is fast enough to get into Marth's range without getting knocked away. A good spam game can also help you get into his range. Young Link's edge guard against Marth is very good as well. If he tries to recover below, Lai-Fire at high %s and Lai-Fire spike(bomb drop d-tilt spike) at lower %s. If he is coming from the side, just go out and n-air him. Usually chaining n-airs works really well at any %.
Its not a bad match up at all. Just remember Marth can kill you fairly easily(as well as majority of the characters can against YL :( )

Good point, but since you're always hitting Bowser with your projectiles (since he's so kute and fat) then he'll never be able to touch you

Lmao so samus is a bum after all***So i think*** thx Chip, you type a lot which makes it better a lot.
Your velcome ^_^

YL's easiest high tier match up IMO is Marth and Peach.
Although I blow at the Peach match up pretty hard :(

QFT

I find that I have a higher win consistency against either Marth or Peach (moreso Peach) than say a charachter like Sheik or Falco.

And Laijin, don't say you completely blow at the Peach matchup, cuz you don't. You do fine until you get to the killing part vs Peach. Mind if I give some helpful advice? I suggest at high %, if you land a bomb on Peach then try and go for a Dair instead of a Nair to kill her with the Bomb Plant. It can kill her really early at like 80%ish on some stages.

It really ***** her :(

Well, I'll do my best to record some matches against DJ Combo this month. If I'm fortunate enough to go to *Pound* 3, then I'll record some matches against Mew2King, Ken (if he comes), Azen, PC Chris, KDJ, or any other good Marth if the oppurtunity presents itself.

Help please? o.o
I actually posted this in another Sheik help thread so this should technically be in quote form, but I personally don't like reading it in quote form so here it is:

Ok Sheik you say? lol haha every yLink main has trouble playing Sheik their first couple times but through EXPERIENCE and smart thinking, the matchup can be overcome and personally Sheik is a comfortable matchup ^_^

NOTE: SHEIK IS STILL A REALLY GAY CHARACHTER AND CAN **** YOUNG LINK HARD

O.k. here we go

First of all, we prolly are going to talk about stage selection. There really is no "best" level to play Sheik, but there are quite a bit of stages that she can screw around with young Link pretty bad (i.e. FD). Good levels to fight Sheik are probably PS, this is because the stage is LARGE with PLATFORMS as well so chaingrabbing won't be as likely. Following the same, distorted patterns of PS will prove in your advantage because of the spam-advantage qualities when the stage changes (such as the mountain stage with the HUGE mountain that can help you spam from high above, or the big, burnt tree which you can use as a big dividing line between you and your opponent and space your projectiles AND can use the tree for a quick, invincible escape if they come your way so you both swap sides [in case you didn't know, you're slightly invincible between wall-jumping, sooooo that basically means that if they see you coming their way and the Sheik tries slapping you with a fair, then you can wall-jump and double jump to swap sides =p). And battlefield is also pretty helpful for young Link because of it's neutral qualities. FD is NOT good obviously because she can chaingrab you ( Ooo but there is a special-super-duper DI trick that can get you OUT of CHAINGRABBING =D ). Anyway, DL is so-and-so but prolly in Sheik's slight advantage though. Uhh same with YS and FoD too.

Okay on to the matchup. At the beginning of the match you must spam. All in all, you must work on your spam game; know when to use which projectiles at what times. Take a bomb out and throw you boomerang first. You see, at the beginning at the match your just trying to space yourself against Sheik before you unleash a combo starter. To start off your first combo, try and land a bomb on her. From there, the best combo is to land a PBB (Point-Blank Boomerang which will do 19%), or you can do an upsmash (The Jash Combo :] ) or a utilt, uair, or whatever to start up a combo. If your feeling like a real wuss you can go for a simple nair or dash attack to get her away from you :p

Aight, so the first part of the battle is spacing yourself so you DO NOT get grabbed but it will happen eventually. Sheik is looking for ANY oppurtunities or openings to get you. So her counter to your spam is spamming back with her needles of course. Let it be known that your projectiles is > than her needles but it is still VERY close. Alternate from spamming on the ground to spamming on the platforms to spamming from above her, then retreat. The Sheik (if it's any good) will soon realize that needles won't do the trick so this is where Sheik will get clever. She'll probably use wavelanding on platforms and fastfalling to squeeze through your projectile gaps and eat you up and believe me: that strategy works. The Sheik will sometimes just skip the whole spamming back part and go straight to tryin to get ya.

If Sheik gets near your face, try spacing SHFFL'd fairs against her ( best way is by using the C-stick and DI'ing backwards for maximum spacing) or use jabs too if she's close. When she gets close to you, attempt to get her in her sheild by spacing fairs, nairs, jabs, or anything with little lag but good range so she doesn't sheild grab you. Sheik will proabably approach with an arial or dash attack, tilts, grab, or any other aggressive nature attack (duh!) so spacing with the Fairs, nairs, and jabs is useful in not getting grabbed.

What's that you ask? Sheik doesn't JUST try to get grabs either? Oh yeah Sheik has the "gay" tilt comboes too. Well, if Sheik DOES try to start some comboes with tilts then you must Crouch-Cancel them darn tilts! >=[ You'll have enough time to see the f-tilt coming out to CC it so you don't get comboed (keep as a reminder that this is still the beginning of the match and that the CC works only when you're at low percents), but if the first tilt hits you still, then no problem, all you got to do is DI down and from the tilt's trajectory and you'll land on the ground back in CC position.Crouch-Canceling is crucial in defeating Sheik. Now, once you have successfully CC'd the tilt, now you must act! There are several things you can do once you CC'd; this is because Sheik is open to lag during her tilt duration (forward, up, or down, but most commonly forward). My personal favorite move to do in CC position is the D-smash because this will hit her away from you, thus no comboz no more, and at moderate percents it will hit her off the stage or hit her onto the edge. Hitting her away is good, because it keeps Sheik on the defense which gives you time to spam at her when she's away. ANOTHER technique you can do is d-tilt. The d-tilt is better to use if you want to set up another combo on Sheik such as d-tilt -> u-tilt-> uair uair uair = ****. The only problem with this is that the d-tilt is slow when it comes out and is slower than the D-smash (d-tilt comes out at 14 frames; D-smash comes out at 9 frames) so the Sheik may have time to put up her sheild after her tilt so she sheild grabs you before your d-tilt hits her. So the D-smash may seem more safe in situations. Another move you can use is upB because it's fast (an attack that comes out at 8 frames) but D-smash and d-tilt seem more practical IMO. Now, if the Sheik is good then it'll realize that you're going to attack in your CC after her tilt. If you were unsucessful then the Sheik will have time to act before you do (which is unlikely) so she'll probably use D-smash or sidestep dodge. Just sheild in your CC to block the D-smash or sheild grab after her sidestep dodge. But remember, Sheik won't usually have time to act after your CC counter attack.

Remember that you DI tilts away from Sheik and to DI her Fair up with the contol stick and toward the stage with the C-stick.

Alright, now you get Sheik up to a high percentage through good spammage, spacing, comboing, and good defense, but you need to hit her off the edge now. The best way is to either land a D-smash on her or do a bomb-> nair at her. A SHFFL'd Nair after the bomb is probably the most reliable way to hit her off the edge, which will NOT kill her if your opponent knows how to DI, so the way you kill her is from some sweet edgeguarding >=].

Ok, when Sheik is AWAY from the ledge and is recovering, try to attempt to jump OFF the edge and nair her and upB back to the edge so she dies early by not being able to reach the edge just in time. If she does come back to the stage, do ledge-hop -> Dair on her because of her horrendous lag after her upB.

BUT let's say you DIDN'TTHINK YOU HAD ENOUGH TIME to jump out and nair her before she upB'd and become invincible. Instead just throw a bomb out at her, but NOT to actually hit her. The bomb will act as a distraction and force Sheik to upB as early as possible back to the edge, giving you control over her upB and edge-hogging before her (since you forced her to upB when you wanted her to). But if the bomb DOES hit her then whoop-ee, jump out and nair her during the bomb stun. Now, while you're edge-hogging, it'll be wise to ledge-hop stall for invinciblity frames (since she's invincible during her upB but can hurt you still). If you are succusful with your ledge-stalls, then you will force Sheik to land on the stage with her lag, which gives you oppurtunity to ledge-hop Dair her (mentioned above already). If she lands on the platform above you, then ledge-hop Uair and combo her with more Uairs. If you are unsuccesful with your ledge stalls and you have to roll back up then Sheik will grab the edge again. At this point, the only thing you can do is throw bombs at her while she ledge stalls ( Sheik has freakin' amazing ledge stalls O_O) and if you get too close she'll quickly ledge-hop and slap you in the face with a Fair, so watch out!

Now how do you recover against Sheik? Well remember to DI her Fair up and toward the stage. Uhhm... remember to throw bombs at Sheik while you're in the air if she plans to edge-hog you and then jump out and bair (it's **** on young Link, trust me) but the bombs will do the trick, because Sheik will either get hit by the bomb or she has to roll onto the stage and let you get back on to the stage. If Sheik is needle spam edgeguarding you, then air-dodge and hookshot the edge. If you're upBing under the stage remember to Ledge-Tech her d-tilt -> Fair or just a plain old D-smash.

Alright here is the Super -secret DI trick in which my brother and I discovered with young Link and Link! I would've wrote it myself, but I felt my brother here wrote it nicely himself on the Link boards =). Remember it's ONLY a mindset in which makes you APPEAR like you are behind Sheik when your really like in front........... it's confusing but you'll get it hopefully:

Just to let you know, here are some good Sheiks that I've faced before:

I've faced SlyD (is the 3rd best Sheik in Washington), Ka-master (just in some friendlies), Hitsuguya of Canada (is ranked 1st in B.C. Canada), and Dieslow (ranked 5th or so in B.C.)

Anyway, I hope I helped out a lot after that ridiculously long post =)

There you go ^_^

My bad, I forgot to put in the section where it explains the super DI to escape Sheik's chain grab

Well, here it is anyway from my brother who originally wrote it:

Alright, I'm about to reveal my one ultimate technique against Shiek that will allow you to avoid the chain grab after the first throw. THis is a bit strange but if you DI the d-throw up, but just a bit behind like a really high aimed diagonal position, Link appears to be in front of Shiek after the D-throw. In fact he is actually behind her and you can jump out of the d-throw before she grabs you again. Strangely enough, after I figured out the DI pattern for the bomb jump, I realized it was the same Di against the grab if that helps anyone. THe DI is really specific so it won't work the first few times but once you get it, you'll see why Link goes even with Shiek. Along with the projectiles for spacing, You'll be counter picking FD against Shiek. Actually, at the Last Washington Monthly, I played a shiek and first round I asked if he wanted to play at FD. He asked if I was kidding and I said I was serious. I ended up three stocking him lol. Seriously though, Fox and Falco are much harder matchups than SHiek. Hopefully the DI trick will help others see the light.

Hmm, Chip. Thanks. I played him today and I actually won a few ;-; until he decided to play differently, lol. I just need to work on my edge guarding, and knowing when to do what (edgehog/guard). That's my main weakness with YL, the killing part ;-;

If you hit Sheik off the stage with the attack, don't be afraid to jump off the stage and Nair her before or immediately after she uses her double jump to gain an early kill. But if you can visually discern that you won't have enough time to Nair Sheik before her upB (she'll gain invincibility frames doing so) then edgehog instantly. Since you're edghogging at this point, you'll force Sheik to act with limited options with her upB. One of her options is to simply upB and land right onto the stage. In doing so, this gives her tremendous lag after she lands specifically from her upB. At this point, ledge hop -> Dair her to unleash major punishment. Alright, back to Sheik's other option. Sheik can also upB, then control her trajectory to go straight UP. When she does this, she's going to trick you by expecting you to roll up the ledge so you don't get hit by her upB and by doing this she'll grab the edge. In order to stop this, simply stand up from the stage instead of rolling. It is much faster with less lag but gets the job done in terms of gaining you invincibility frames and not get hit with Sheik's upB. After you stand up, Sheik will still be upB'ing upwards and will try to grab the stage but you just have to turn around and Dsmash her while she falls down towards the edge.

Just remember that Sheik is invincible in the duration of her upB and that she has a single hit on the attack as well. Just play smart around the edge with your own invincibility frame camping such as ledge hop camping, or simply standing back up from the stage to punish her with a turn - around Dsmash, or ledge hopping -> Dair her. Know what to do what in the situation.

Ledge guarding Sheik comes through experience. Just don't play dumb around her =P

I actually find shiek not THAT difficult..

Scale of 1-10 on how difficult a char is against yl (In my opinion of course :p)
-Falco 10/10
-Fox 8.5/10
-Peach 8/10
-Shiek 7.5/10
-Marth 7.5/10
-Ganondorf 7/10
-C.falcon 7/10

I know this helps absolutely no one and i don't have to do this... but I'm bored and did it for the sake of discussion :p

What's your difficulty list/ opinion?

Whats a good secondary to keep that complements Young Link well? I'm gonna be going to my very first tournament in two weeks, and I've been playing competitive for two years, yet I haven't chosen a secondary yet. I'm so lazy >_>

Peach is good, if you can get used to the floaty-ness. Falco's good too (well... he's nothing like young link so it's a change o.o)

I'm an all out young Link main and charachter purist in tournaments - which basically means I only use young Link in tourneys and never use counter pick charachters ever.

My secondary is Marth (but I only use him in friendlies or to train my brother Deva) so I'd say consider making him your secondary as well. He's fun to use and is very pretty and stuff if you properly use him. He's not like young Link (except they both weild swords) but he seems like a very good pick-up-and-go sort of charachter if your a young Link main. He has great assets and could tackle some hefty matchups where young Link really lies weak (like Fox). He's probably one of the most user - friendly charachters to first learn how to master of all the higher tiers (except Sheik) in a short amount of time.

I'd go Marth since he's funner to use
but you could always go Sheik as well.

Falco is a very technical heavy charachter to learn if you need to get good with him. It'll take longer than two weeks to do it :dizzy:
