also my dad before obama even got elected said that obama is a full out communist

Basically the Western world's greatest nightmare, since all our interests are in private corporations.

Sounds like your dad is a right-wing lunatic.

There are different levels of socialism. Communism is the most extreme version of socialism where there is complete government control over everything (at least in theory). There is literally no such thing as private property in a communist world. Everyone is completely equal. This is when socialism becomes a problem; just like with anything else, it doesn't become feasible at all when something is taken to the extreme.

I say this because the U.S. is somewhat of a mix between capitalism and socialism. Private businesses can do what they want within reasonable boundaries (that's the capitalist part), but they are still restricted by the government in some ways -- businesses are required to pay minimum wage to their workers for example (that's the socialism part).

Also, if your day says that capitalism is a perfect system don't listen to him. It isn't. Just like socialism, if you take capitalism to the extreme, you get almost the same result as communism. Instead of the government telling you what you can and can't do, you have a gigantic corporation doing just that lol.

USA was basically founded on the idea that every man takes care of himself, and for some reason this idea is still pervasive in the American society. In modern times, however, there's nothing wrong with helping each other out if you can afford it. This is not communism.

Your dad is being very irrational. Fleeing from an extreme ideology does not mean that you have to go to the polar opposite. USA is NOT going to turn into Cold War era Cuba.

It's clear that at this point, if you have to use a monetary system (go see Zeitgeist), the best solution is a mixture between capitalism and socialism, where government power balances out corporate power.

Basically the whole scare tactic is that people can't distinguish economic socialism from having a totalitarian society where the govt. controls social freedoms, which is also called socialism. Democrats practice the former, but hard-core Republicans associate them with both.

I think there's a lot of people smarter/more informed than you or me on opposite sides of the "Is money really valuable" spectrum. I plan to experience both and decide which I like best. So far, I'm agreeing with you though. Eating a PB+J after a week of Ramen feels just as good as eating a filet mignon after a week of restaurant food.
