Dude, so I've been playing the old pokemon red again recently and it is such an incredible game.
As I said to Ted recently, there's just something about the new pokemon games that I just don't like. It's more than the fact that 95% of new pokemon look like ****. It had been bothering me, so I decided to go back to my roots, play through the old games, and see if they shed any light on this feeling. I think something essential was lost sometime after the gold and silver generation. So, aside from the obvious stuff like the graphics, what changed?
There are a number of 'problems' with the red and blue series. For example, I hate it that you can only hold a limited number of items. I hate it how you need to manually switch boxes otherwise there will be no room for that Articuno once you've finally caught it. I hate it how you can't see what power level or accuracy moves are, let alone a simple description of said moves. Coming from the recent generation, I now hate it how you can only use a TM once. There are other things, but you should be seeing a pattern by now. These are all things that were actually 'fixed' in later generations. I'll come to the point.
Think back to the time that you found out about the missing no glitch. For me, this essentially ruined the game because it became too easy. Easy = bad game. Now the later generations, by constantly 'improving' and making things more convenient for us, have actually slowly ruined the game for me because the games are now too easy. I think this is a big part of why I now don't enjoy the new pokemon games, because they are just too spoon-fed; i.e. perhaps too directed at children. For example, it used to be fairly easy to get lost or not know what to do in the old red game. I remember being stuck for a while on that bit with the button behind the poster XD, plus if you didn't explore enough, what would you do if you didn't go help Bill and get the ticket for the ship? There isn't anyone there to be like, hey so this is what you do and this is how you do it. You've gotta figure everything out yourself, like just what certain moves actually do and if they are more powerful than this other move and with experience estimate just how accurate they actually are. The new generations are worse because they've been made easier/more convenient and are no longer a challenge or a mystery. Oh, and Gary is a d***, you know, the way rivals are supposed to be.
