I think there's a massive misunderstanding going on here.
Are most of you bothered with a female Link (I would be), OR the option for a female lead in a Zelda game?
If the latter, why?
I've been hearing people ask "what does it add" and I respond with "what does it hurt"?
Zelda is someone I like more than Link. I'd be for a female lead in a Zelda game whether it a version of Zelda, or a new character, or one of the clearly many strong female characters Zelda has. Just look at how they all practically took over the HW roster.

But Link is a defined male character. He's not an avatar character.

After all you can name Cloud Strife and his party? Are we going to argue they're all avatar characters and could have gender swaps in the remake?

When they're clearly iconic as their pre-determined genders.

Just like Link.

I wouldn't mind a "Linkle" option for a game. Would be interesting.

NOTE: "Linkle", not "Female Link".
Have it like Hyrule Warriors proposed and make "Linkle" Link's twin sister or something.

The external hard drive I was using for my wii u mostly gave out a little over a week ago. Downloaded games show up, but it takes several tries just to get it to load a game....and failed tries crash the system. I finally got a replacement and was able to back up all but 6 games; it took a couple of tries since those six games either had errors during the transfer or just crashed my system before the transfer started. Fortunately only 2 of those games actually had save data (I hadnt started the others) and 1 of those games I'd only finished the first level.......but that last game :crying:
I'm fine with having to redownload a game bu my save data. It sucks that it's linked to the game itself.
Well at least Child of Light is awesome so far, so it wont be too bad working my way back up.

Anyway, the point of this post is that the NX needs to separate saves from the game itself. I shouldnt have to use more space than I need to.

If there's a female hero option ever added. I think it's insulting to make her simply a female version of a prior male character.

Especially when her name is as hideous as ''Linkle".

Yes, I realize the irony of saying this when I'm rocking She Hulk, but I also detest how many of comics prominent female heroes are off shoots of a popular male hero as well. Their personalities might make them stand on their own, but it's still annoying.

Link is a strong, independent Hylian who doesn't need to be a woman.

Really though, I don't see the big deal with a female Link, on either side. What would it hurt to have a female Link? Every Link is a different dude, often descended from another, what's to say Link's great granddaughter was the only one available to take the Triforce of Courage, hell, Link even had a little sister in Wind Waker, she could have been the one to go on an adventure.

But what real reason is there to have a female Link in the first place? Sure, it could have been a neat novelty in Hyrule Warriors, but what purpose would it have otherwise? Can girls not get into a game with a male protagonist? You don't see guys complaining about Samus. I almost always pick the female option in games, but I like Link how he is just as well as any other character.

I think the key thing here is that it isn't just making Link a female, but that the holder of the Triforce of Courage just happens to be female. We've clearly already seen that the hero doesn't even need to be of the same bloodline as previous Links.
:4tlink:

It'd just happen to be some girl named Link, probably because her parents were hardcore fans who were expecting a son.

Question, If Link had the option to switch genders, what one would be considered canonical? Those that prefer playing as the female would want that one to be, but most likely the canon will remain with the male Link, adding that as a choice might just start more wars than it would end since the fanbase of female Link would fight for her

How about Link is a guy. End of story. It's simple, it's part of the story.
This as well. It's not even a Time Lord thing where it's always been sort of wishy washy regeneration wise (until Missy at least)...

But the legend is clearly stated to be about a male hero.

While, "Linkle" is a stupid name, I guess it doesn't matter since you can name them anyway. :p

If we lived in a world with a fairly even ratio of male and female leads in games, this would be a good argument. But we don't live in that world. Furthermore, refer to my previous posts about avatars vs defined characters.

Besides, it's not so much having a "female Link" as it is having a female player option. Leaf is not a "female Red," for example, she's just the other playable character option. There's no reason for the Zelda series not to do the same.

Adding a female option in Zelda games would feel like it's being added just for the sake of it.
If you want to have a female lead character in a Zelda game, just make Zelda the protagonist instead of adding a female version of an already existing character

Nobody debates Robin's status as an avatar because from the get-go players were free to customize many things about him/her. With Link, you don't get any of those choices outside of the name (many games suggest "Link" from the outset anyway) so he's not an avatar in the same way. They still intend for you to do some projecting, but Link is really more of an old-school silent protagonist than a proper avatar. I think Nintendo and fans are averse to the idea not because of disdain for female protagonists, but because Link is a popular and familiar icon that Nintendo has an easy time marketing, and fans are comfortable with.

Really, I want to have a playable Zelda, or Shiek or any of the other popular characters that could easily fit into the silent protagonist role. I think that idea needs more love.

It's surprisingly cool outside. It's not even fall yet.

Not that I'm complaining. The last couple of weeks have been brutally hot.

That'd honestly be like asking who Link ends up with at the end of every game. Each fan has a different head canon for it, and Nintendo would probably never give the fanbase a straight anser

Yeah, I mean, it's not like there are girls who'd like to play as their own gender, or anything.

Your lack of reading comprehension is actually quite astounding.

Unless you made this post before seeing the one I made right above, in which case disregard this response and read my above post.

I don't understand why nobody wants a fully customizable player protagonist in a Zelda game...
Even just giving Link black hair and and all black clothes would be cool...

Your lack of reading comprehension is actually quite astounding.
That's enough, mate.

The female equal to Link having the same journey as him wouldn't even make sense considering the whole Spirit of the Hero thing.

Wouldn't she then technically be a trans-man lead because she's going to feel like a man inside?

Again, what's the point? It's some kind of backwards thinking to try shoehorning in a female option for that reason. Should we compromise the freedom of a creator for something so petty? Miyamoto wanted a green, elf-eared dude in tights to run around swinging a sword in his left hand. Want him to be female? What about the skin tone options? What if I want a right-handed, female, Hispanic Link in a wheelchair, that's only fair isn't it? There's an appallingly small amount of wheelchair representation in games.

You're barking up the wrong tree anyway since I was clearly putting up arguments for both sides, why ignore that?

Actually that would go against Zelda's base character, since she is supposed to be more like the plan guy, while Link is the guy who charges into the frontline. So her being the female playable character could rub people the wrong way.

When has the gender of the hero been relevant? Why must the gender of the hero stay the same? Why can't the Spirit of the hero be reborn in a girl?

For the record, I liked the rest of what you said. I had an issue with the one part, so it's all I responded to, but I might as well let you know.

How does this compromise the freedom of anyone? The male option would still exist and it would be the same as ever. Just because Miyamoto imagined it one way doesn't mean it shouldn't grow with the times.

More customization options are almost always great. Gender is just the starting point and arguably most important part.

That sounds like ow the edge to me.

Okay two things...

1. This is an interesting discussion.
2. Most of you need to stop being ***** about it. Like its hard to go with either side cuz frankly I'm embarassed at both sides' behavior. Condescending tones all around and this uppity attitude of "I'm clearly right you moron," is disappointing to read. Grow up you guys. Infractions will be sent out soon if you aren't careful.

I doubt that would be true.

Especially in the times where we've had Tetra, Hyrule Warriors Zelda, Sheik, etc.

This is now a series where Zelda clearly has taken action in her own ways and became an action character in her own right.

Link as a girl could be cool. I agree that he's an Avatar, but he's also been in spin off series as Link, which seems like Nintendo thinks of him as a character now, and not just an avatar. But I'd be down for them to change that. Change is usually good, and it could make more people happy :)

No reason to argue, we all like Nintendo and want more happiness for more people with games, right?

Here's what I don't get about the idea of Zelda being the protagonist in a main Zelda game.

....what's the plot?
Is the incarnation of Zelda such a complete badass that the world didn't need an incarnation of Link to be born until the next generation? Conversely, if a Link was born, is he just so incompetent in comparison that he doesn't really serve a point to exist?
Are the incarnation of Link and the incarnation of Zelda one and the same this time?

Is she going out on adventure (and if so, what for?) or is she defending Hyrule from the new villainous threat?

Etc.

EDIT: Is the King of Hyrule the new damsel in distress?

Something like a spin-off of Ocarina of Time where it's told from Zelda's/Sheik's perspective wouldn't be a bad idea, IMO.

There's no issue, I'm not on any side, I'm playing the devil's advocate for both. If you had a problem with that, then you need to take Swamp's advice and just drop the whole thing. I don't have anything else to say about the gender argument, but as a creator myself, I do have something to say on that last line. When someone creates a character, it's their vision, people can interpret them however they like, but it's still the creator's final say. There's no "growing with the times," it's just mucking with the creator's initial idea. I'd personally be very upset if someone took one of my ideas and radically changed it.

Conversely, if a Link was born, is he just so incompetent in comparison that he doesn't really serve a point to exist?.
[collapse=]That already happened.

Imagine if they had made Ocarina of Time with both Zelda/Sheik and Link plotlines.

You get Link doing his adventure. Meanwhile Zelda and Sheik use ninja and stealth to achieve their own means.

That makes for a more interesting game than just ''Hi, I'm Link, I can be both boy and girl!" IMO.
