Speaking of which....Dark Pit doesn't have the newcomer banner on the website, even though Lucina does. Since Dark Pit is technically a veteran from Brawl, would Sakurai consider Metal Mario a veteran?

Dark Pit's page doesn't have the newcomer label by mistake.

He's acknowledged as a newcomer in the game and his debut is stated to be Kid Icarus: Uprising. In All-Star mode, he appears after Shulk (2010) and before Robin and Lucina (April 2012). KIU was released in March 2012.

There are also the fighter cards Nintendo made for all characters in the game, alts included.

Yes, there is a costume for Pit in Brawl that is very similar to Dark Pit (not identical, though) and likely served as an inspiration for the character. However, that doesn't make Dark Pit a veteran since his character didn't exist back then.

As for Metal Mario, it's really curious whether Sakurai would label him a veteran or a newcomer. Since he has appeared in Smash games before, I'd guess he's a veteran. On the other hand, the veteran/newcomer terminology could apply to playable status.

See Charizard and Little Mac. They previously appeared as NPCs, but still were part of the battles, yet were labelled as newcomers when they debuted as playable characters.

If you knew a lick about game design, you would understand.

They can just re-texture Mario's model and bam, Metal Mario. Port the same animations and all that was needed would be changing the moves' proprieties.

That takes much less work than doing an actual new model.

Not like this rumor holds any sort of truth, to be absolutely honest. In regards to him becoming Gold Mario when getting a Metal Box, what about the Golden Plains stage on the 3DS version where characters become golden when grabbing 100 coins?

How would that work with Metal Mario to avoid redundancies?

Problems with Metal Mario:

Shovel Knight is a tons time better than 2 veterans who are fine, but really take em or leave em, and a third Mario that isn't even going to bring anything new.

I'd rather have one supremely unique character than 1 unique veteran, and 2 that are variants on another character's playstyle.

I'd take the former scenario. Metal Mario may be redundant, but at least we get Wolf.

I would like to point out that when Yacht Club said "multiple amiibo" they said the base for the Shovel Knight amiibo will be the standard for if they decide to do other Shovel Knight amiibo in the future. That doesn't help the case for Smash at all. It was specifically at the base and that it was the official Shovel Knight base that would be used in all future amiibo endeavors for them.

I'd be okay seeing a Shovel Knight Mii costume.

Theres no proof to the Metal Mario leak whatsoever, but yet it sounds so plausible for some reason. Its just one of those oddball choices. Like I remember there was a leak with the Stork from Yoshis Island, and instantly people said "Thats a Sakurai pick" or there was Ultrahand in a leak, and then we saw Ultrahand in Rusty's Real Deal with a full body, making him viable as a ROB like character.....something very sakurai like.

I'm basically paraphrasing my post on it.

@ Tama has constantly referred to it as a rumor and not a leak, so I've done the same.

To be honest it could just be a word choice.

Though, if I had to guess the reason it's a "rumor" and not a "leak" is because the information was first told via a reliable source. If they had given more hard evidence (Images, video, documents, etc) in direct relation to the Shovel Knight in Smash rumor, Tamaki might have called it a "leak". They are a reliable source of information, which is the whole reason we are entertaining this rumor. If it was just a random 4chan rumor, I personally wouldn't give it the light of day.

In the end the "rumor" rests on a couple of noteworthy collaborating sources...and now some strange coincidences which point to the rumor being potentially true (Yacht Club Games no answer on the rumor, saying there could be multiple amiibo, etc). However, until we find hard evidence, it's best to call it a "rumor", as we are not 100% sure.

A lot of what we label as "leaks" should actually be labelled as "rumors" if we want to get into semantics.

...but this is not something I would regard as a leak. A leak, to me, is verified info. It is backed by irrefutable proof that I've been able to see with my own eyes. For this, I have not seen that yet. It is a handful of people talking, saying things will happen. That's nice, but it's not really irrefutable. When we get that proof (if we get it), then I'd regard it as a leak. Until then, rumour it is.

I'm sorry but a third party character that hasn't had a new game released in their own series for 25 years is definitely "random"
People won't recognise him and if they do it'll mainly be from the SEGA crossovers, not the Alex Kidd series.

Alex Kidd isn't obscure though, he's probably the second most known SEGA character (obviously not counting Sonic friends, ugh); Also, for a Mii Costume isn't something very hard to do, since there already at least three or four 3D Models for him;
--I mean, if Akira can get in..

The Master System and SEGA Genesis games of Alex Kidd are very popular and beloved, at least around here; People has the same nostalgia with him as they have with Sonic (maybe even more); --At games like All-Stars Racing, is always a big deal having him in the cast.. He even was a Christmas special DLC in the last one, if I'm not mistaken.
