I am sure there is, having Alex Kidd in smash doesn't mean "random and useless"

Well let's look at it realistically
Metal Mario has appeared in 2 Mario Karts (Where he's one of the most picked, especially in 7), An Arcade Game, 2 Sports Games, Dr. Mario 64, and every single Smash game to date (Albeit, he was only truely unique in 64 and Melee before everyone else joined in), has his own theme, stage, SFX (His Metal Stomping), unique speech pattern compared to Mario, properties, and would be really easy to make, just remove Mario's Metal Box Texture's pupils and bam, new character.

Meanwhile Alex Kidd only appeared about a handful of times, and like many others have said...

He's both metaphorically, and literally, dead.

yeah, Alex Kidd never was a threat for Mario; this mean no rivalry; ~Poor little guy was everything SEGA had (well they tried to put a boss called Mari-Oh, but they dropped the concept);
But all things considered, I think that the Alex Kidd series is something that Sakurai would pay attention; but we all agree that he's too small comparable to the blue beast that crushed Alex. D=

Can you guys think of many plausible characters that would sit in the 1980-1984 stage of All-Star mode? Literally the only ones I can think of that would come remotely close are DK Jr and Balloon Fighter. Though technically Duck Hunt Duo could slot in prior to that as the Duck first appeared in 1979.

Not just speaking about DLC wise, just in general.

Ice Climbers were January 1985, and depending on the source you look at Balloon Fight was first released in 1984...

Frogger. I'm not sure if he's plausible, but he is a gaming icon and was released in 1981.

Edit: Oh.... how about Joust! Definitely not plausible, but who wouldn't want to play as a guy riding a flying ostrich with a sharp spear.

Edit #2: Gotta love Wikipedia. I didn't realize that Bomberman was first released in 1983. I think he's an extremely plausible character.

He was never Mario's rival.
Alex Kidd was Sega's unofficial mascot...until they wanted to make a rival to Mario. Then then immediately abandoned him for Sonic. This is common knowledge.
Also, VC releases don't mean much either. A lot of games have VC releases.

Hold on, lets look at the other characters in the same exact situation as Metal Mario: Daisy and Waluigi. The main exception is that Daisy and Waluigi have way more fans even if their main appearances aren't canon. Though according to Sakurai it seems like they need to try harder to join the fight.

Personally, I see Metal Mario as more tolerable than Shovel Knight.

I've been one of the biggest Anti-shovel Knight guys here (I probably had some hand in starting the hate), but I'd rather have Shovel Knight than a cheap knockoff of Mario that is not significant to the series at all. At best he's an easy heavy weight driver to add to Mario Kart. Yes, he was in Smash 64 but he hasn't appeared as a character since then. Did he even get his own trophy?

Because Metal Mario is a quick and easy clone and seems like something that wouldn't be out of the norm for Sakurai to do. Only i think it's more an on-disc thing he'd do rather than a dlc thing he'd do. It's not real anyways though.

I think the lack of any importance to the main line Mario series will hold him back as an clone. Plus the whole metal block being an item. I don't think it's something Sakurai would do. It'd be way too confusing from a design point of view.

I think only for MvC3 and UMvC3 but I didn't think he wouldn't be up for them considering that MH has crossover with almost everyone and everything.

It's probably one of the reasons why Sega usually sells Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles separately despite being both one full game.

I still hate that because I have to buy the game twice to get the full game despite being much easier and profitable to sell them as a full game but nope.

I think there's some problems with the music as well (at least regarding Sonic 3).

SEGA hasn't re-released Sonic 3 in awhile actually... and Taxman isn't doing a port of it either.

Somehow I became very, very hyper. Turns out my jimmy senses were rustled by the Alex Kidd debate and how I somehow knew that the 'weeeeeh sams iz twans' article would bug me more today. The Co-author ranted at Twitter and said she didn't care about canon and said Tails, Link, Zelda, Samus and Poison are trans and that's final or something. Confession: I've never sat down and properly played S3&K, I usually get around half way in and drop it completely (I have beaten Sonic 3 though).
