We're so used to the Melee characters, but I can only imagine when the game was coming out/had recently dropped. What a weird cluster**** of new additions.
Peach and Bowser make sense. But then thinking your new Zelda character was just Sheik. The one-off transformation who didn't really do much, over Zelda or Ganon/dorf. Then you do get Zelda, and, it's not like her own arsenal was that deep then, but she just uses non-faithful versions of things Link does. Which is nothing to say of Ganondorf, who everyone was psyched on, and then he's just a Captain Falcon clone.
And then Ice Climbers, who are ok? But... very very random. Like, there's no Wario, there's no Diddy, there's no Dedede... but there's Ice Climbers. Even Pit was more popular. Little Mac too, probably, in the west.
Then there are these two randos named Marth and Roy and I have no ****ing clue where they're from. I mean they're cool and all but it's harder to by hyped when you've no idea who they are. But they're cool. Still trying to figure out if Marth is a girl, can someone who speaks Japanese clarify?
But it's cool they added Mewtwo, people like him. Wait... this dude is no fun at all to play. Dang, they ruined Mewtwo. Yeah, cut this guy (seriously, there was a notable contingent who wanted Mewtwo cut... until he was cut). Oh, and there's Pichu. Yay.... wait, he hurts himself, and he dies at like 50%? Sakurai!
Also what the **** is a Mr. Game and Watch? What does that mean?!? WHO IS THIS??
And why on earth would they add Dr. Mario when they could've added Wario?! He's just... another Mario... (Obviously good they didn't, but I don't doubt this was a take back then). And speaking of just another: Young Link? We already have Link? Why do we need Young Link? Why are there so many clones?! Falco is cool though.
This game is really fun and all but a lot of these new characters choices are kinda [insert outdated c. 2001 insult here]. Also why are there so many Zelda characters when Metroid and Kirby and DK only have one? Don't worry, next time they'll add Ridley. He was already in the opening trailer.
Not saying everyone would've been like this, but I can only imagine there was a bit of whiplash to what is, to be fair, very much not the strongest lineup of newcomers Smash has had.
To be honest, the only thing I was looking for at that time was Banjo & Kazooie. Though, it was less that I had this desire to see him Smash and more of a "Banjo is one of Nintendo's biggest stars. Why is he not in these games?"
I didn't really have much issues with the roster. Bowser made sense but Peach was kind of unexpected because she hardly did any fighting in the Mario series. I've always known her more as the damsel in distress than a fighter, so I was a little interested in how she played. As for Dr. Mario, I was like "okay but why? He's just Mario as a doctor". Yeah, he was one of the least interesting new characters in Melee.
I saw Zelda as the same as Peach, though the Shiek transformation was awesome because I always thought Shiek looked like a ninja anyway. Plus, I had beaten Ocarina of time just a few years earlier, so a lot of those things were still fresh on my mind. I thought Young Link was a much better addition compared to Dr. Mario because at least he seemed more important to his game and a lot more different. Though it was cool to see Ganondorf in the roster too, I never understood why he fought like Captain Falcon, knowing he actually fought in Ocarina of Time. But it wasn't something I focused too much on either.
Never really been a Pokemon fan, so I wasn't excited for Mewtwo or Pichu. I just hated how you had to unlock Mewtwo. Seriously, what were they thinking?
I actually did like the Ice Climbers inclusion. It really felt like every character, old or recent, had a chance in this series, which led to me wanting Little Mac. Melee was the first game that really showcased the Nintendo history element of the series, especially with the trophies (though strangely, it was completely missing Punch-Out!!, which I just never understood). So seeing NES era characters was in the roster was very interesting. And for a Nintendo fan like me, I really enjoyed it.
When I heard of Marth and Roy, I was like "Who?" But I also liked sword characters (probably because I was also playing Soul Calibur) and Link was my main, so when I saw that Marth was another sword character, I tried him out and he instantly became my new main. It really didn't matter to me if I didn't know Marth, Roy, or Fire Emblem. I actually thought it was interesting to learn about what else Nintendo made besides the games that I already knew about.
And finally, there was Mr. Game & Watch. Had no idea what he was supposed to be or what game he came from but there was something about his sound effects and animations that I have seen before. I just couldn't put my finger on it. It wasn't until some months later after I unlocked him when I was looking through my games and realized that I already had Game & Watch Gallery 2 on my Game Boy Color. I should have just slapped myself right then. lol
So yeah, I really didn't have many problems with Melee's roster. The biggest issue I had was no Banjo & Kazooie. They were missing in the first game, which was a surprise. But I was thinking there's no way they'd miss out on the second game but again, surprisingly, they did and it was frustrating at that point. Of course, all that was before Rare got bought by Microsoft but yeah, that was the biggest issue I had.
