Did you miss the part where I said that the JRPG protagonists are an exception and that they choose the characters from the most popular games? Even then, the three exception characters are still the protagonists of their games, soooo... yes, 100% there is a hard rule that the protagonist WILL get in first. And yes, Simon WAS the first character. He was revealed first, Richter is HIS echo, and we have confirmation Simon was highly requested. Richter is the bonus, but Simon WAS the first character.
I like how they handled DQ in smash because they decided to go with this "Most popular entry" requirement and put the DQ3 AND DQ8 heroes in there.
Since DQ3 is the most popular in asia while DQ8 is the most popular in the west. Everybody won and it's awsome.

This so much. It catered to everyone well. And worked for marketing in general to try and get the series to sell worldwide. As well as an excellent way to sell DLC since they were marketing around Eleven in the first place.

They could've pulled it off well with any Hero as long as they were highly marketed, but they had a game planned anyway. It just happens to be XI's updated port. If it was another game, that would've been the best face. If they made new Erdrick-related spin-offs as an all new updated port, that would've been excellent too. Albeit, DQ3 not being the last one(to have some kind of specific releases around it) does hurt a tiny bit. Apply that to Solo, Eight, or any other protagonist and it works(albeit, it would've probably been someone who could fit the alt situation fine as the hard idea).

If I remember right, were Eleven and Erdrick the first ones considered, with Eight and Solo being other additions? If we didn't get alts, it might've just been Eleven too thanks to the marketing factor. Regardless of who Sakurai wanted more, Eleven was clearly agreed upon as the core choice(Kirby's hat is specifically from XI, based upon Erwin, the stage is from XI, most Spirits are from XI with the second set being based upon DQ1. 3 got far less than expected, I won't lie, and it wasn't that surprising they could only afford one amiibo. Really, the only silly thing they did was changed the All-Star order to match Erdrick's year... despite him blatantly and intentionally taking second fiddle to Eleven in the end. I wonder if it's just cause Sakurai wanted to give Erdrick more love or something, when... that's easier to do with stuff like Spirits or licensing out the usage of his image for a proper amiibo).

If you played the XBC3 DLC you might wanna reconsider Rex as a newcomer. He's a total Chad bro. Biggest glowup in Nintendo main characters since Radiant Dawn Ike. I wouldn't be opposed AT ALL to have Rex, Noah and Mio as newcomers whilst keeping Shulk (with his new look as alt) and the Aegis sisters. To make things a little less overwhelming, Noah could work as semi clone of Shulk.

Also, Tears of the Kingdom has leaked. I have a specific question, who's got the sauce here?

Assuming you're asking for where info can be found from the leak...
I think the Gaming Leaks and Rumours Reddit has a Zelda TotK Megathread.

For fans of classic Beat ‘em ups, it looks like Double Dragon is finally getting a new game. I’d probably prefer the Streets of Rage 4 graphical style for Double Dragon but it’s great that it’s getting something. It’s cool to see the genre make a bit of a resurgence in recent years. Hopefully we get another new Battletoads game before too long. A new game usually helps a character’s chances for Smash.
I don't like Marian in this. She looks like she's heavily inspired by April from Shredder's Revenge. Instead of the badass Marian from RCG2.

Yeah, I definitely prefer her in River City Girls 2. She’s fine here but I agree she was awesome in RCG2.

I feel like Smash could use a few more badass women. That’s one reason I prefer Impa’s HW portrayal to her in AoC. I was also sad to see Zelda swap from her stoic TP version to her more cheerful ALTTP version.

Agreed! I'd love Laura Croft, Jill Valentine, Marina Shafir, Chun-Li... Bunch more really!
Lara Croft. It's a common misconception.

But yeah, the more the merrier. Give me Lara. Give me Jill. Give me Chun Li. Give me 2B. Give me Tracer (at least after Crash). Give me Alis Landale. Give me Officer Howard. Give me Sami. Give me Impa.

I don't see why you can't be cheerful and badass.

You can be both. I’m not sure if I’d describe Ultimate Zelda as badass but someone like Kathryn from Three Houses or Ashera from Xenoblade 3 are both cheerful and badass. I suppose it’s all subjective though. Depends on your definition of badass.

It sounds more like the word you're looking for is mature rather than badass.

Unrelated but I do find it funny you somehow remembered Catherine as "Kathryn".

I think it’s probably closer to “cool and tough” than mature. It’s all subjective like I said before but that’s how I see it. For example, Peach is likely older than Vi but I wouldn’t really call Peach a badass. I guess it’s a tricky word because it means different things to different people.

Lol I don’t know how that happened. I beat Dimitri’s story Three Houses and most of Edelgarde’s in Three Hopes and Catherine was one of my favorite characters. You’d think I’d remember how to spell her name.

Cool and tough aren't mutually restricted from cheerful, cutesy, etc, characters. Peach can certainly fit the cool and tough aspect when given the opportunity. If anything, mature sounds closer as the characters you're describing aren't necessarily older, but experienced, stout, hardened, etc.

And mature is not exclusive to old people, despite how much people associate the term with them. Especially when you have younger people who are more mature than most adults nowadays.

Jessie as the Black Arachnid, now that's a badass!

I legitimately want to see Jessie and James make it into Smash. I feel like they are probably the most iconic video game adjacent characters not already playable in Smash and were by far my favorite part of the anime. I’d love for at least James to get his old 4Kids voice actor back (Eric Stuart). I’d like Jessie’s as well but her new voice actress does a great job. Sadly, Meowth’s original voice actress passed so we’d have to stick to the new one.

Do you remember which season was his last?

I think it was either during Gen 3 or 4 but it’s hard to remember exactly.

Edit: I just looked it up and it looks like 4Kids dubbed the anime from 1998 to 2005, seasons 1-8.

Do you mean Battle Frontier, where they changed tons of voice overs? Battle Frontier is basically a filler season to give them time to work on Diamond and Pearl, just like Orange Islands was for Johto. ...Though oddly Gen 2 is treated as part of the same core series as Gen 1. It's odd. Gen 3 is the first time they changed to a "proper new series" among the seasons. This could be due to Gen 1 and 2 originally being one game?

Probably. I stopped watching the anime regularly after Gen 2 so it’s hard to remember exact details but that sounds right. I’ve watched a bit here and there since then so I’m not totally out of the loop at least.

It bothrs me that they chose not to do this nowadays to give them a bit more time to work on the games.

Netflix releases seasons pretty slowly, so that may no longer be an issue.

Which can be annoying on its own way, but do notice the massively small amount of episodes per season now, so it's pretty clear they already are doing less to alleviate the stress. It doesn't mean they can release episodes later(that depends the contract), but not doing 20+ episodes in a row really really helps.

I noticed how the subjects always tend to find itself coming back to Pokemon somehow. lol

You know it's too bad that despite third party series like Castlevania and Dragon Quest starting on the NES, they never show much of any of their NES nostalgia like the Mega Man series does. No retro themes either.

Unfortunately, I have a feeling that if the Ninja Gaiden series gets represented, it won't being doing that either. Like the Metal Gear series, it seems like Ninja Gaiden has moved beyond that or something. Hayabusa at best could simulate some animations from the NES games (similar to Mega Man, Simon, and Richter) but that's all I'm expecting.

I'm glad the Doom series still have some retro content in it and if Doom Slayer becomes a playable character, maybe he'll even have the old sound effects and even music straight from the old games.

As for the River City series, their NES retro will always be a part of their series. Even in Mighty Fight Federation, Kunio and Riki still has those NES sound effects in their movesets. So if they become playable in the next Smash game, I would be surprised if they don't get the Mega Man treatment with both remixes and retro tracks from their series.

The character I want the most is Chris Hansen. His final Smash would be reporting the player's IP address to the local police station. This only works on people playing as Ness, Lucas, Inkling, Roy, Young Link and Toon Link.

I wish Megaman showed more love to the stuff outside the NES. I get why its like that but having songs from some of the Megaman series (X, Zero and Star force) but not at least one song from all the series (Battle network, ZX and Legends) really bugged me.

The big difference there is that, Mega Man is famous for having a ton of really recognizable songs.

RCR has, like, 4 songs. And one of them is the Double Dragon theme. :p
