Who even owns this game in current year?
People still play retro games. I was barely alive in the 90’s but I love going back and discovering classics. Old fighting games in particular are fun to go back to see the evolution of the series with each iteration.

I was thinking he meant "who owns the rights".

Cloud might get saddled with the "two spirits and two songs" curse again unless they go through some hoops.
I feel like this is kind of Cloud's smoking gun for me. As in, if we can't just see Cloud return with the full scope of content they negotiated in Ultimate, I don't think they bother bringing him back until it can be filled out via DLC. Scaling back a series' progress that massively is unprecedented in Smash and I think Sakurai would see it as unacceptable without the whole completionist excuse Ultimate had going on. Two songs or nothing is a hard bargain.

"More of a disservice than Cloud being absent from the game altogether??" Well, no, but the assumption is that he and Sephiroth would come back as some of the first veteran DLC to avoid needing to that pitiful content spread again. Maybe not ideal but I'm pretty confident certain DLC will be worked out well before the game drops... hell, I'm convinced this was the case in Ultimate too. You can't convince me that they didn't pen down Sephiroth + supplemental FF7 content as DLC practically the very moment Sakurai was denied using any more music or spirits for base game.

Or maybe with Sephiroth came kind of a futureproofing that allows them to continue to use this FF7 content into the next game. If Cloud was the trouble-maker for EIH like people speculate he may have been this might be the kind of forward thinking necessary not to run into the same issues later. But I'm no expert on the business side of things, how these kind of contracts even work, so who's to say.

Funny thing about Mischief Makers is that even Google doesn't know who owns it. So I went ahead and looked up the game credits and...

Screenshot 2025-02-10 135000.png

Doesn't tell us which one has more of a stake in it but it seems like you'd have to talk to both Treasure and Square Enix to get the rights to the game. Now, as for who owns Marina specifically? I'd assume both companies given the game copyright is split between them but the real answer is nobody knows outside of Treasure and Square Enix's legal teams lol

Marina would be a cool throwback Assist Trophy.
Now, speaking of ATs... which characters do you think would be cool for the next game?

  • Sylvando (Dragon Quest): Makes opponents that get close to his parade follow him and his parade for a while, then he blasts them away with an explosion at the end.
  • Morgana (Persona): Attacks with his saber and slingshot randomly. At the end, he transforms into a bus and slams into anyone in his path.
  • Eunie (Xenoblade): Attacks with her weapon and uses buffs like Power Ring and Healing Ring.
  • Tethu (Ever Oasis): Attacks with his leaf blade randomly, then sometimes uses his wind powers to create a wind twirl that traps opponents.
  • Ulala (Space Channel 5): Is summoned at the center. If you land your hits in sync with the music, your attack power increases with each timed hit.
  • KOS-MOS (Xenosaga): Appears and attacks opponents at high speed, mixing melee combat with multihit ranged attacks.

When it comes to JRPGs like that, I think it makes way more sense for iconic monsters to be ATs instead of using party characters.

I’m not sure Xenoblade really has any iconic monsters anyone who hasn’t played the games would recognize. The games are great but they don’t really have anything on the level of a Slime or Cactuar.

which characters do you think would be cool for the next game?
  • King Bob-omb (throws Bob-ombs and fighters alike)
  • Cranky Kong (hops around on his cane like a pogo stick, burying and spiking opponents)
  • Guardian (locks a horrifyingly powerful laser onto opponents)
  • E.M.M.I. (grabs opponents and instantly K.O.’s them if their damage exceeds 100%)
  • Adeleine (summons a living painting to attack for her)
  • Polar Bear (shakes the stage by jumping)
  • Lysithea (casts Dark Spikes Τ along the ground)
  • M. Bison (based on his boss appearances)
  • Tifa (unleashes her Limit Breaks in order)
  • Futaba Sakura (buffs and heals the summoner and their allies)
  • Mumbo Jumbo (inflicts a random transformation an all fighters, regardless of who summoned him)
  • Nakoruru
  • Creeper (explodes after a second and a half of following the nearest opponent)

Territorial Rotbart. Basically, a really high-level Red/Orange-furred Monkey-like monster that appears and wonders around in a map early in the games. I don't know about Xenoblade 3, but it appears in both Xenoblade 1 and 2 and in Xenoblade X, there is a similarly named monster named Hayreddin the Territorial that appears in Primodia, the first area you start in and surrounds the main hub, New Los Angeles.

They’re also in 3. That was the first monster that came to my mind too. I don’t know if they’re quite at the level of anyone but fans of the game would recognize them though. That is a pretty high bar for any game though to be fair.

Um, hold on lemme bring up the lists

Polar Bear (Ice Climber): Acts like it did in Smash Run, walking around and occasionally jumping to make a huge earthquake. Can be defeated, and has a special weakness to flame attacks.
Creeper (Minecraft): Walks towards the nearest player and explodes, dealing massive damage and knockback, even to the player that summoned it. Think a slightly more mobile Electrode. Can be defeated, which causes it to detonate instantly. When this happens, whoever dealt the final blow is immune to the explosion.
Slammin' Lid (Splatoon): Spawns Chums, Smallfries and the occasional Cohock. Slams down on players that get too close. Its aircraft acts as a platform, on which players can jump on and attack the pilot.
Metal Slime (Dragon Quest): Runs around the stage, weakly ramming into opponents dodging any attacks that come its way, while also reflecting any projectiles. If it is defeated, whoever did so temporarily "levels up" and gains a substantial power boost for a couple of seconds.

Also, have some minibosses that would make good Assist Trophies.

Boom Boom (Mario): Runs around, wildly swinging his fists. While he's swinging, he is immune to all attacks from the side. Jumping on his head stuns him and leaves him vulnerable. Can be defeated.
Lynel (Legend of Zelda): Based on its Breath of the Wild appearance, this vicious monster attacks with a Lynel Sword and Bow, while also breathing fireballs. Can be defeated... with great difficulty.
Viruses (Dr. Mario): Latches onto opponents like Klaptrap, but instead of dealing damage directly, they debuff the victim, making them run slower and jump lower, and deal less damage while taking extra damage from attacks. Can be defeated (perhaps Dr. Mario's Megavitamin deals extra damage?)

Mipha (Legend of Zelda): Uses Mipha's Grace on her summoner, which lasts for 10-15 seconds. During that time, if her summoner is KO'd, her power will activate, fulling healing them and preventing them from losing the stock.

Taranza (Kirby): Largely pulls from his appearance in Star Allies, using spider silk and webs to impede fighters. His final attack will always be Queen's Phantom, where he summons an illusion of Queen Sectonia to zap opponents with lightning bolts. Can be defeated.

Sigurd (Fire Emblem): Rides his horse and attacks fighters with his lance, including a wide-ranged, hard-to-dodge swing. The horse also deals damage as it runs. Can be defeated, and takes 2x damage from fire attacks. I couldn't resist

Glass Joe (Punch-Out!!): The Goldeen of the group. His attacks are similar to Little Mac's Assist Trophy performance in Brawl, using a one-two punch and an uppercut. Neither of these attacks are very strong. Can be attacked, and drops health-restoring croissants as he is attacked, so go wild! To make up for the fact that he's a living pinata, he has the highest health of any Assist Trophy.

Revolver Ocelot (Metal Gear): He will run around like Samurai Goroh, shooting at opponents with his Colt Single Action Army, which deals electric damage, as a way of both adhering to the "no real guns" thing, and a reference to the electric torture of Snake in Metal Gear Solid. Upon departure, he will twirl his guns and declare "You're pretty good!" before leaving. If Snake is present during the battle, he will say "Now we'll see if the man can live up to the legend!" upon being summoned. Can be defeated.

Rambi (Donkey Kong): Runs around the stage and charges fighters, similarly to Gogoat. What makes Rambi different is that when his summoner gets on his back, they can actually control where he goes by tilting the control stick, thus making him the first "playable" Assist Trophy in a sense. Can be defeated.

Riku (Kingdom Hearts): Runs around attacking fighters with his Keyblade (Way to the Dawn). His list of attacks include Strike Raid (he throws the WttD like a boomerang), Maelstrom (a spinning attack that deals heavy damage), and Dark Aura (as depicted in KHII, he fires dark fireballs that stop foes on contact). Can be defeated.

I just want a Punch-Out Assist Trophy already. I'm like a broken record on this but two games without one when there's such a colorful cast of characters waiting to be picked at is pretty baffling. Any of Glass Joe, Bald Bull, King Hippo, Super Macho Man, Aran Ryan, Great Tiger...

And I'd like to see more standalone guest ATs. I know that it may hurt for certain characters if their fanbases are holding out hope for them to be playable, but I think seeing ATs as an honorable position is the healthier way to view it. And Bomberman being an AT led for him to have a convincing full body Mii Costume, for example, so the assets being around to utilize later are better than nothing. I'm still hoping for Sans to be playable but I think other indie characters like Shantae, Cuphead or Zagreus could make for good ATs if not in the rounds for playability.

Flavor picks from already represented companies are always fun too. I can envision Arthur from Ghosts n Goblins quite well, maybe someone like NiGHTS or Opa Opa from Sega. And maybe a classic Rare character to accompany Banjo like Fulgore. I think most of my endorsements here are going to be some great memorable characters who may just fall a little short of having playable character clout right now.

Also, personally, if you're not going to add a Rhythm Heaven character at least toss us an AT. And bring Saki back.

What character could change the most in Smash 6?
It's Ganondorf. I know how many people are doom and gloom about it, but considering Ganondorf hasn't had a major appearance in a Zelda game since Twilight Princess... outside of fan request, there wasn't much clear incentive to change Ganondorf based on new inspiration. TOTK introduced a new version of Ganondorf that has proven quite popular, and offers a lot of new material to play with.

Honestly, we're nearing a bit of a ship of theseus with Ganondorf where a few more changes will make him hardly resemble Captain Falcon much at all. We'll see how much tweaking Sakurai deems necessary, but I would be shocked if Ganondorf's first major appearance in nearly 20 years wasn't responded to in some significant manner. This is perhaps the most sense an overhaul has ever made for him.

Second is Samus, I really do just think it's time to see some adjustments made. Especially in response to Dread, which is one of the best performing games in the series and further solidifies Mercury Steam's vision for 2D Metroid as a series standard. Samus continuing to feel this floaty and slow is going to age worse and worse if we continue in this direction, so I'd at least like to see her get more physical attacks like her parry and a slide inspired by her new mobility.

More of an All-Rounder Samus feels plenty justified now that we've got like twenty other floaty zoners to choose from anyway. No need to keep her so rigidly within one archetype, IMO. And worst case scenario just keep Dark Samus around and make her a vessel for "old" floaty physics Samus.

My issue with Ganondorf isn’t only that his moveset was borrowed from Falcon but that he didn’t have much from his canon games. In Ultimate, they just gave him Smash attacks from Ike and Cloud. He feels more like Necrid now than a fully unique character even if he’s no longer a Falcon clone. I still enjoy playing him but his moveset definitely feels like a missed opportunity for something unique and cool.

Do you guys think they'll pull newcomers from Smash Ballot/Poll requests and/or do another Ballot/Poll for the next game?
Even if they don't make the ballot a priority, I imagine some characters will still be in their minds because of the ballot, which may or may not lead to them getting in.

I know this is not directly related to your comment, but i hope Sakurai for the love of arceus, stops ignoring modern kirby entries for stage/AT representation after the sucess of The Forgoten Land.

Have Sena as an Assist Trophy so we can have moments of a petite girl hitting people with a giant hammer in Smash.

Not only is there a Rotbart in Future Redeemed, they're named Bombastic Rotbart Jr. so they're presumably Territorial Rotbart's kid.

If you're gonna pick an iconic monster from Xenoblade, Rotbart is about the only way to go unless you're using like random Bunnits or Tirkins or something.

I mean, we have Tinkaton over there in the Pokemon corner and, if one considers an Axe close enough to a hammer, 3H Hilda over there is the Fire Emblem corner. Though the former is a lot more likely compared to the latter.

Klonoa (Klonoa series): He just does what he does in his home series, jumping around the arena and picking up both items and players and throwing them around.
Don-Chan (Taiko drum master): I imagine they would be like DK's old final smash which was based on Taiko drum master to begin with, but of course controlled by CPU rather than the player, where at random they play small notes and big notes

Some people remember Smash Tour. And everyone that remembers Smash Tour remembers that it sucked. If it were to be brought back how would you redesign this mode?
I would add in minigames such as Break the Targets, Board the Platforms and Race to the Finish, and make a penultimate game similar to Kirby Air Ride's City Trial and Smash Run.

I think they would find it difficult to do that this time. Not that the "modern" era of Kirby hasn't been successful up this point, but Forgotten Land is now the best selling game in the series (by over 2 million units!) and brought it into a bold new direction. When addressing each series' biggest moments on the Switch it is impossible to gloss over this one, a contributing factor to what Nintendo sees as significant growth for the Kirby brand during this era.

And it's got a lot of really striking locations begging to be interpreted into a stage. It's evocative post-twilight scenery featuring buildings coated in greenery and vines, abandoned locales and what-have-you are honestly much more striking than many of the world and level themes that could have reasonably been picked from the previous era. Even if we're abiding by the premise that like... Smash usually goes with one of the first levels, or a really central / plot-important location, in Forgotten Land's first world alone we're greeted with a few great choices. Alivel Mall, Waddle Dee Town, or even just the first level stands out in its own right.

Honestly, Smash 4 feels like the sour note here. In adding two classic Kirby stages and neglecting RTDL, its influence extended outward toward Ultimate where most returning series did not get a new stage to begin with. It will forever be a bit baffling that we didn't see a Lor Starcutter stage, but they have the chance to redeem themselves in this moment and I think they almost certainly will. Was just an unfortunate butterfly effect.

Don't have players move at the same time. Have a select order (even through the random dice or a survival fight at the beginning) where players roll and then move spaces based on that roll. Smash Tour should have been Mario Party with gimmick fights replacing mini-games and its baffling to me that such an easy concept was screwed up so badly.

Honestly, i wouldn't bring it back. It is fine as a nice oddity of the WiiU version, but it would much rather have a new, more well-though mode in the next game than Smash Tour again.

I was typing up a sincere answer to your question but now I'm convinced you're not really asking this in good faith. I don't even particularly like Kingdom Hearts, I actively didn't want Sora in the game at the time. But to deny that it has legitimate popularity is just completely out of touch, or you're trying to rile people up which I don't really feel like participating in.
You guys misunderstood my comment. I never meant to say Kingdom Hearts was never popular but not as popular as much higher candidates that most likely entered for the ballot

Kingdom Hearts is a popular series but the never mega-hit especially to the parents series of IP like Disney or even Final Fantasy.

Sorry for begin a bit off-topic, but talking about the Smash 4 days gives me so much nostalgia. Those were the days xD.
Tell me about it. Can't believe it's has been almost 11 years since. SonicToasts vid on Smash 4 was first introduction to speculation. The PapaGenos before PapaGenos

I wouldn't. I'd consider Smash Tour unsalvageable since the concept isn't all that enthralling and there's better modes to spend development time on. Smash Bros doesn't really mix with a more strategic Mario Party like experience, and it's hard to design this mode without having the players feel like things just happen with no agency on their own part.

Also kind of hilarious in hindsight, but if Smash 4 was being developed today and this screenshot leaked, people would say it looks fake because the background looks AI generated.

I honestly think it should've taken a bit more from Mario Party, since the Mario Party formula works. But that aside, I don't know how well the mini-game sections would've worked as one of the benefits with all the Final Battle modes from Smash Run, like Race to the Finish/Top, defeat as many enemies as possible, etc, was that everybody had their own screen and so didn't need to do split-screen, whereas the mini-game sections of Smash Tour needed everybody on the screen and didn't account for split-screen, so the modes from Smash Run wouldn't have worked with Smash Tour.

Top Bottom
