Wouldn't this be applied to a lot of series that lost momentum?
I mean... you can bring how situation and circumstances are different from each series.
But, we will likely get caught off guard in next Smash.
"Lost momentum" ≠ Becoming actively hated as a series by lots of people.
I don't think the Overwatch in Smash situation is comparable to something like Klonoa or Darkstalkers. The latter two series are dormant, but people still very much like those series and the characters they're from. I've seen Overwatch slammed repeatedly ever since...what, 2019 or 2020 when Actiblizz controversies began publicly surfacing?

Would it have changed anything at all though if Sheik was left behind after Melee?

In Brawl, it likely would've meant Mewtwo got finished up, which is good, but it doesn't help the Zelda series at all.

In Smash 4, the Zelda series got nothing. MAYBE it would've given them enough time to work on the Chorus Kids or whatever Rhythm Heaven character was supposed to happen and maybe Bowser Jr. would've been better with more time, but there's really no way to tell. Certainly not anything related to Zelda though.

And then in Ultimate, Sheik would have come back in the same vein as Pichu and Young Link, so we'd be in the exact same scenario we're in now, but maybe with a Rhythm Heaven character in Ultimate's base game.
It wouldn't change much perhaps, all I can think of is that the outcry for a Zelda newcomer would be even bigger if this was the case. Maybe.

I would have preferred Mewtwo over Sheik though. Not gonna lie.

We don't know how much Nintendo would factor such reception. It's not like Nintendo never worked with companies with shady history. I know you will say which company isn't or Activision Blizzard has worse all that. But, I think other companies with fighters in Smash have just as many skeletons in the closet. For all we know, that kind of issue may be buried under number on sheet... or internet perception may not be reflective.

It's hard to see Villager as a "duh" pick when prior to Smash 4, Sakurai had gone on record saying he had trouble figuring out a moveset for him in Brawl.
It was more the vibe and “not being suited for battle” rather then moveset. This is also why the Miis in Brawl and supposedly the Nintendogs weren’t added.

Unrelated but was Isabelle a “duh” pick before Ultimate?
