Anyway, fun time with another game by Gwen. You get to add any newcomer from any new potential franchise for a total of 5 characters, but there's a catch! They can NOT be the main character at all. If, for example, you wanted a Soul Calibir character, you'd have to ditch Nightmare and chose say, Amy instead.
Oh man this is good because a lot of my favorites are not mains. Let's do this.

1. Athena Cykes (Ace Attorney)
2. Alisa Bosconovitch (Tekken)
3. Slayer (Guilty Gear)
4. Tron Bonne (Mega Man Legends)
5. Rideaux (Tales Of)

Ring Fit Advenure: Drago
Paper Mario: Goombella

I think I asked this before, but if the very last character was a fourth party, but this was the last smash game, and their appearance and moveset was entirely based on the video games their in( like for example, Spiderman with his PS4 appearance and a PS4 and MVC moveset) would you be ok with it? I would love it personally as fighting games always have their guest characters.

I will keep saying it until people tell me to shut up about it for the thirtieth time:

Mike Tyson from Mike Tyson's Punch Out

Put him in.

I would not be okay with that. I would agree with the series ending after that, that's the biggest shark-jumping I can imagine.

It depends on who they are. Like if we're talking Spidey I'd love him for something like PSABR2. But for Smash, my list is VERY specific:

-James Bond (GoldenEye 007)
-Mike Tyson (Punch Out!!)
-Scrooge McDuck (DuckTales)

Geralt fits on the list but I personally don't like him or Witcher 3 that much. Still, I'd have no complaints about him being in due to his origins, it's just he's a real goofy ****.

I'm sure there are others I could be convinced of, like I've considered how crazy the idea of Mickey Mouse vs. Mario could be with his Epic Mickey moveset, but those are my big three.

Regarding Dracula and Geralt, is a different situation, While yeah, dracula is a literary figure based on an historicfal figure, That particular interpretation of dracula is for teh castlevania series that is not connected or relevant to the literary figure and it's started with a videogame, Castlevania. But Geralt is not just a monster hunter, but is particularly Geralt from the witcher books, even if teh games are considered a "gaiden" from the books (On the books Geralt dies, but in teh witcher 1 he somehow managed to survive although amnesiac) but is still he IS teh geralt of teh books. on teh world of the books, sharing with mostly the characters of the books.

Is like saying that you could add the goku from dragon ball xenoverse because it was kinda a different goku than the one of Dragon Ball Z?

Believe me, I Would Adore Geralt on smash, but i think that is a line that shouldn't be crossed.. at least not until smash has like.. 300 characters of something and we are devating If Bringing teh world of Gex to smash would add more than simply adding the 8th Star Fox Character General pepper to the roster,...

In that regard the characters from Dinasty warriors are also fair game IMO.

And speaking of dracula... just watched the last death battle of ganondorf versus dracula, and it was made with smash ultimate assets :0

Not a super fan of the super nerdy discussion of "power levels" or the narrative a little too DBZish they use, but i can't deny that teh animators of that show are certainly upping their game and teh actual battle was quite fun to watch. :0

Real talk, the only series that I would consider for a non-videogame character pick is Star Wars and my dream choice would be Darth Revan from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

I know there's talk regularly about characters like Scrooge, Mike Tyson, Goku, Shrek, James Bond, but aside from Goku and Shrek a lot of these characters I can really think about them for one or two games (games that are quite good). Memes in the case of Shrek and a lot of fighting games of varying quality with Dragon Ball.

But in the case of Star Wars, its pretty much one of the few franchises that delivered a constant amount of great games that are among the best licensed titles in the market with a great variety of genres that very few franchises (RPG, Action, Platformer, Racing, Shooters), even videogame ones, achieved. Even one of the items in the game is pretty much lifted from the series.

(now not so much in regards of quality games because lets be honest, LucasArts started failing and EA hasn't done much with the franchise asids microtransactions)

I would pick Revan due to be a character that to my knowledge debuted on a videogame and is a fantastic WRPG that pretty much is one of the best products of Bioware, I know I mentioned before that if we get a non-videogame character it would be difficult to get one that is not the main face of the franchise and that people in general would question why nogo for the face, but in this case of hypothetical characters at least I wanted to go with one I really liked.

This is trickier than I thought...
1. Team Fortress 2: Demoman (Not sure if this counts as cheating. If it does, replace with Wheatley from Portal)
2. Phoenix Wright: Maya Fey
3. Phantasy Star: Dr. Mad
4. Timesplitters: Captain Ash
5. Halo: Cortana

On the topic of 4th parties, I kind of always thought that Smash Bros. vs Shonen Jump would actually be a really cool way to handle moving Smash in a different direction post Ultimate if they're going for something all new. A game that prioritizes the main Nintendo fighters, maybe a couple of extra guests, and really focuses on one company as a crossover could be really cool and allow for lots of characters. I figured Shonen Jump made a lot of sense seeing as characters like Goku, Luffy, and Naruto mean so much to people as well.

Either that or Smash Bros. vs Capcom, but you get my drift. If future games can't have such a huge roster, then go big in a different way!

God, maybe it's just because I'm almost caught up with the manga but I'd pop off SO hard for Luffy and a Jump vs. Smash game. Yes please. And Nintendo vs. Capcom as an actual Versus Series game is like, my dream game.

Vergil vs. Sephiroth actually looked pretty decent as far as amateur animations went.

Too bad the wrong villain won

Anyway to move past this conversation, again, pick 5 dlc characters of franchises who don't have playable characters but not a main protagonist
Min Min (ARMS) - cool install concept with interesting ranged fighting potential.
Nemesis or Wesker (RE) - big scary tank or mixup terror
Squigly (Skullgirls) - stance character with various options, maybe could have camera shenanigans with center stage.
Curly Brace (Cave Story) [riding on technicality here] - walking armory, could incorporate a level system that alters all if not a wide variety of attacks
Tap Trial/Rhythm Girl (Rhythm Heaven) - hammerspace fighter that rewards combos that follow the beat, maybe has natural extensions to normals ala Bayo fair/Hero ftilt that can rekka into other options. Combos have to make music of some sort lol

Five characters that aren't the main protagonist? Hmm...
  • Sonic the Hedgehog-Tails (I like him a fair amount)
  • Yoshi-Poochy ('Cuz puppies)
  • Darkstalkers-Jon Talbain (The only acceptable not Morrigan pick)
  • Rhythm Heaven-Rhythm Choir (Which is to say: all of them. At the same time.)
  • Okami-Shiranui (The loopiest of loopholes)

Since I've been pulling for some MM/ORPG characters, and I don't like create-a-character types or stand-ins (Derplander, Ash, etc.), some of these become pretty easy for me. >_>

Elenor Camuel - Phantasy Star Online
(or Rupika, or Rico)
Shantotto - Final Fantasy XI
Hildibrand Helidor Maximillian Manderville
- Final Fantasy XIV
Kirari Moroboshi
- The iDOLM@STER
(or Ranko, or Mayu, or Takane, or Hibiki, or Eve, etc... I'm very open.)
Shinmyoumaru Sukuna - Touhou Project
(or Patchy, or Meiling, or Hina, or the Prismriver Sisters [as a collective fighter], etc... I'm pretty open here, too. >_>)

Honorable Mentions: Pyramid Head from Silent Hill and Erica Fontaine from Sakura Wars.

Granted, you might say splitting Final Fantasy into additional entries is cheating, but with the way Cloud was handled, it seems realistic that each would sort of exist as its own entity for the purposes of crossing over. If nothing else, I'd at least put the MMOs in their own bucket and drop Hildy if need be.
My MMO pick would be Rytlock Brimstone because Guild Wars 2 is awesome.

Albert Wesker (Resident Evil)
B.B. Hood (Darkstalkers, I chose this just so we can replicate Shrek Super Slam's tier list by having a Red Riding Hood-esque character be top tier. Also I really like her as a character lol)
Goro Majima (Yakuza)
Vergil (Devil May Cry)
Undyne (Undertale, assuming the Sans Mii costume doesn't count)

I just realized that this ended up being almost entirely Capcom. You could probably tell where my biases are :p

I am more than OK with what I call 'gaming-adjacent' characters, and I actively want some of them (specifically Kevin Keene, Segata Sanshiro, and potentially a Pokemon TCG rep), but beyond that, not so much. I would probably be OK with a character from something that was specifically envisioned as a multimedia franchise if it included games as part of its plan from the start (while not specifically .hack, think of something with a similar project plan to .hack).

My MMO pick would be Rytlock Brimstone because Guild Wars 2 is awesome.
I spent a lot of time on the original GW and a fair bit on GW2 (granted, I haven't played much in the past few years), so while there aren't really any characters from the games that would top my lists, I can certainly respect that. If I were to pick a character though, I'd say Livia or M.O.X. would be reasonable choices because 'reasons'. Or Gwen simply for nostalgias sake... Or one of the henchmen from Prophecies so I could laugh at them being low-tier again... >_>

I know this is never going to happen but damn, imagine if it did. Just imagine all the potential matchups like Pit Vs Seiya and Pokémon Trainer Vs Yugi.

It would be so amazing to actually see realized and Sakurai could just absolutely go to town with interesting movesets, stages, etc.

It would also be equally amazing to see all the die hard Smash-Nintendo fans absolutely die as they realize that Sakurai legitimately embraced anime for once. A Shounen vs Smash will make them beg for the old days of "anime swordsmen" in Smash I feel like haha.

The only surprise fourth party characters I would be okay with are

Arkham Game/ Injustice Batman
James Bond
Scrooge Mcduck
Kingdom Hearts/ Epic Mickey Mouse
PS4/MvC Spiderman
Goku
Spongebob
Mike Tyson
Star Wars Rep
Ironman
Yeah that’s about it, and I feel like if we were to get one, it should only be one of them to make it extra special, and I would choose Spiderman.
Oh yeah and Popeye too

If the director of Digimon games for Bandai Namco considers Tamagotchi "LCD Games", I don't know why Sakurai wouldn't consider it.
And if Sakurai considers Game & Watch as video games, why wouldn't a Virtual Pet be considered?
LCD Games aren't necessarily 'video games' though..so there's still a question on what Sakurai would consider them.
As for Game & Watch, we don't know if Sakurai considers those to be video games either, however, they are a different case. Game & Watch (and ROB) are Nintendo creations, so they don't have the 'rules' he placed for 3rd Party characters, which the 'must be from a video game' rule is in regards to.
It makes them money. There doesn't always need to be another reason for it.
No, there doesn't, but I'd honestly say they'd likely make more money from a different, more popular character like 2B or even another Final Fantasy character. Heck, I bet even Zack Fair as an echo of Cloud would make more money than Geno.
I mean, Geno may be popular amongst Smash Bros. fans, but that doesn't mean he'd sell more than a more well known to the masses character.
I love Geno and especially Super Mario RPG, my fav Super Nintendo game and amongst my favorite games ever, but is Geno really that interesting a character?

I wish they'd show more heart & nostalgia, and add more old characters ,rather than focusing on newer characters simply for the sake of bussiness.
But 3/4 of the confirmed DLC characters are old (4 if we count Plant). And even a good chunk of the base game newcomers are from older games.

Personally, I think Smash needs to pull a little bit from every era. New and old a like.

I agree. I'm all for representing video game history, but there's something to be said for modern day standouts. Characters like Joker, Geralt, and 2B have really made a name for themselves. Not everyone who plays Smash is pushing 30 and had a SNES or N64 growing up.

Easy

Marisa (Touhou) - This one's a bit iffy, since she's the deuteragonist and (after the first 2 games) Marisa and Reimu are always playable, but Reimu is distinctly a cut above. I'd much prefer Marisa, since she's my favorite character, and she could bring a fun mix of magic and broom action, plus the ordinary magician aesthetic has yet to be taken. If you don't think Marisa is eligible uhh... Utsuho I guess? Her theme is a banger, and Smash could always use a Nuclear Hell-Raven

KOS-MOS (Xenosaga) - Yes this one also counts, Shion is definitely the protagonist. KOS-MOS has both ranged and close up attacks. Maybe a T-elos echo too?

Edea Lee (Bravely Default) - While all the characters get focus in the first BD, the order of attention is Tiz > Agnes > Edea > Ringabell. I need that sweet Bravely ost, and I think a Brave/Default system could be interesting in smash. Plus, I say there's no such thing as too many swordfighters.

Gemini Sunrise (Sakura Wars) - Ok, this isn't from that faked leak from a while back, I've wanted Gemini since Project X Zone. She'd just be soo cool. C'mon, who can say no to a Samurai Cowgirl?

Alisa Amiella (God Eater) - Monster Hunter but anime and with an actual character. A bruiser with range, she can join the Ike/Hero club.

Just noticed all my picks are women. Huh, that's an interesting coincidence. Also, most have a sword + gun combo. Also a coincidence. And, I like the music from all the series. Another coincidence. And now I've just realized they all have outside chances...
:sadsheep:

Personally, I think Smash needs to pull a little bit from every era. New and old alike.
Maybe this is parsing it too much but how old is old? Is a character from before 2000 old? What about 2005? Likewise, how new is new? Wii era? Wii U era? And can characters be too new? Personally, I think same year of debut is too new for smash, maybe a mii costume; yes Roy and Corrin, but I'd rather that be the exception than the rule, and I think Sakurai and Nintendo should be more critical of 3rd parties than 1st party characters.

On the whole though, I agree with you, there should be a reasonable mix. imo the balance should be heavier towards legacy/old characters, maybe 3:2, but newer characters should have an opportunity to join the fight.

There are currently 75 fighters in Ultimate. 50 of them originates from 20th century. 2/3 of the cast is over 20 years old (that's without counting older Heroes and Koopalings) and we only have 13 fighters from the last decade.

If we get nothing but new characters from now on, the balance will probably still be in favour of legacy characters.

2. Dipp (Katamari Damacy)
3. Neo Cortex (Crash Bandicoot)
