IIRC, Street Fighter 4. Though there were so many different versions (balance patches) and it's been many years so I'm not 100%.

To go further on my thoughts on clones... I don't even think it's an unfortunate situation all of the time. I think there's merit in providing an existing fighter with an alternate feel, whether that comes down to differences in movement and gameplay, or just the exhibited personality, such as the added spunk that Daisy brings along. Lucina is probably the most justified of the bunch. Trading potential for reliability, having that be an option, can make the Marth archtype a little easier to get into, if you're into that kind of play for whatever reason.

Has to be. It seems like Sephiroth's Stage is one of those Transition Stage, if the Trailer is any Indication

The pitfall people make when arguing over clones is saying a character could work as a clone always gets misinterpreted by someone as having said either they could only work as a clone, that they would work best as a clone, or that they're only wanted as a clone.

"Sure they could be a clone, but they could also be unique, and they'd work better that way!" is usually what the defence devolves down to, but it's not a proper counterargument, since it was never what was being argued. All the current clones could be unique, but clones are literally added for padding, almost always after the stage of adding original character has passed. And it's the only way some of them would be included at all. Their purpose was never to be unique, and the goal was never to make them the best version of themselves.

But I have a feeling the strawman will survive forever at this point. It's existed as long as I can remember, at least.

As someone that has been in this argument too much, for me Personally I think I do get too Defensive when Shadow is brought up as an Echo. It's probably because I see a lot of Sentiment that he's only Echo Material, and that Shadow as an echo Fighter is my Least Wanted Character, because I want him as a Unique Character.

I guess I should try to acknowledge the Possibility more, since Honestly I can't win the "Shadow can be a Clone Argument". Instead I try to Argue Why I think the Possibility of Shadow being unique is more likely than him being an echo. Yes

Really. I probably wouldn't have known since I usually only Play the Shotos or characters with Shoto Like inputs since they had Easier inputs

Yeah, saw a few disliking Sephiroth and VII in general.

I only roll my eyes when people pretend VII isn't massively influential. But the user in question is pretty much impossible to debate with so pointing it out why is fruitless. There's a brick wall, and then there's a "...You really can't be reasoned with in any slight way". They're similar, but distinct. You can break through a brick wall.

I actually had a Discussion with a Friend about this. He told me that people at School (he gave someone as an example) wouldn't know who Sephiorth is, but were probably Know who characters like Eggman or Tails are (Sonic was also apart of the discussion)

Haven't come across any online, but I'll admit I'm one of those who had heard the name but knows nothing about the character. Back in the Smash 4 days, I didn't know who any of the DLC characters were, including Cloud. I did vaguely know about Ryu, just didn't recognize him.

Us filthy casuals exists, we just tend not to make reaction videos.

So anyway, hot take but what if the simplest reason that "The only Mii outfits that came with Hero were Dragon Quest" is that Square Enix used to be two separate companies, namely, Square and Enix respectively.


They're one and the same nowadays, but just consider.

The Square part of Enix made Final Fantasy(And, Super Mario RPG for the record)


Honestly, maybe the reason that we haven't seen the Geno costume is really just 'that' simple. I'm sure you could make an argument that "Final Fantasy will only bring Final Fantasy costumes like Hero only brought DQ costumes", but we've yet to see if that's the case.


Speaking of, although a lot of people would like it, I don't expect a Black Mage outfit with Sephiroth. Final Fantasy in Smash seems tied to FF7, and Black Mage, as Nintendo fans know it, wasn't in FF7.


I could see something like:


Barret(Gunner)
Tifa(Brawler)
Aerith(Swordfighter)(lol staff)
Chocobo Hat
Moogle Hat

But not Black Mage.

To be fair, Sephiroth is rarely brought up in media that isn't targeted toward people who play a lot of games, and he's not exactly a common face on merch when you go to the store.

Characters like Mario, Pikachu, Sonic, Pac-Man, etc. are referenced so often in media and are seen in so many different places that even people who don't play video games could probably say, "Yeah, I know him. Isn't he that blocky guy from that game where you dig and build stuff out of cubes?"

Anyone who visits GameStop or an equivalent to it on a regular basis could probably tell you who Sephiroth is without even needing a second to think. Anyone outside that description would probably have a harder time.

Depends on the types of games they play.

Even within the gaming community at large, there's specific niches and branches.

For example, I got a friend who plays nothing but western games, and knows absolutely nothing about Japanese games. If I showed her Sephiroth, or even Cloud, she'd have no idea who they are.

I came across a grand total of two reaction videos who had no idea who he was, and I've seen a lot of reaction videos because I was curious.

One was "oh he looks cool. That trailer was hype" while the other was "Huh... ok then."
