It seems completely logical to me to think they’re Sakurai picks. It’s a far simpler explanation as opposed to, “Well, you see, Nintendo was playing 4D chess with Joker and Terry because...oh yes, it had nothing to do with them being favorites of Sakurai’s!”

I’m certainly not saying that’s what you’re saying, so please don’t take it that way. That’s just my perspective on it. I may be crazy, but that’s my take.

See, though, when you get into parsing these metrics, things get very tricky. Sure, Banjo has a better like/dislike ratio, but Banjo's reveal demo with Sakurai has only 1.4 million views compared to 3.3 million with Byleth (over twice as much!) and Terry's has 2.9 million. So, given these metrics, are we still confident in saying that Banjo was way more "hype" than those two? I wouldn't say so. It's very easy to get caught in the trap of thinking that the general perspective of Smashboards reflects that of the entire fanbase, but it's simply not true.

banjo didn't have much interest from non-nintendo people and honestly, he was the only DLC character that really didnt need an explanation for how he was gonna work. terry and minmin were needed not just for the showcase but for an explanation of how the character worked. same with steive.

Let’s think: We got beans with Cloud in Wii U and he was paid content.

Maybe, and hear me out here: What if the exchange was something like this...

Nintendo wants Everyone in base, Square says no unless the deal gets sweetened. Nintendo goes with a counteroffer of, “We get Cloud in base game, we add another of your characters as DLC with the REQUIREMENT that we get more FF7 content”, which then leads to Sephiroth as we know it now.

This would explain why Cloud didn’t get more content in Ultimate, unlike other 3rd party characters. It was all being saved until now for Square Enix to make money from it.

I genuinely don't understand what you are trying to get at. How was Nintendo playing 4D chess with Joker and Terry and what does Sakurai liking their games have to do with it? I'm pretty sure Sakurai also likes Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem, too, so were they also Sakurai picks? Aren't you the one actually saying that Sakurai is playing 4D chess by trying to throw us off through deceitful PR?

So far the main consistently I've seen with Ultimate's newcomers is that each series hasn't double dipped in Unique Characters yet. Franchises that got more than one character in Ultimate so far got a unique character(Byleth, Piranha Plant, Simon, Ridley) and echo(Chrom, Daisy, Richter, Dark Samus).

I bet Tom Nook would have some crazy money making mechanic.

Ooh, what if he had Shovel Knight's shop upgrade mechanic from Rivals of Aether, but he would also be able to buy upgrades on loan? So like, you could buy a more powerful attack while you're still short on Bells, but then you would have to raise enough money to buy both the item you bought on loan and the next item you want to buy before you can buy anything else.

I think there's every possibility that Chun-li could come to Smash Bros but I personally see Sephiroth as a partial do-over for what little FF7 stuff we got in the first place.

If there was to be another Capcom character, I believe that they would want to get another one of their series represented. Either a big one to bring in new crowds or one with close Nintendo ties to sell the pass to the core crowd.

Resident Evil seems to be out, given the timing of that spirit event and Monster Hunter as a franchise is in the same state Ridley was for most of his existence.
I'd say the most notable ones without any asterisks on the end are Devil May Cry, Phoenix Wright and Ghost & Goblins.

Still, I'll squat over here and keep my hope for Roll alive.

its doesnt even stop at JRPG villains. Where do you think Dante's and Vergil's designs came from? where did 2B's? Sepiroth is to giant sword users what ryu is to the baseline fighting game character.

only large sword character I know of with no sephiroth influence is Nightmare.

You know it'd actually be kind of cool if we got 2 mii costumes of Cecil. His Dark Knight outfit and his Paladin outfit.

That would be dope but getting Cecil as a Mii Costume has like 1% chance of happening in my head. But it would be great. Cecil has one of the best designs in the series in my opinion, specially his Paladin version

His Dark Knight design is also very cool

But to be honest, I'm not even really sure if we will get Tifa/Barret/Aerith/FF7 costumes. Chocobo is returning for sure but I could see them going with costumes for other iconic creatures of the series: moogle, cactuars, black mage... Which would be cute, but I'd rather have costumes for the actual characters. Or at least protagonists from other Square Enix series.

I would say so for the reasons you described. The biggest issue with K. K. Slider is that he's a noncombatant who in all honesty would probably rather watch the fighters than take part in battle himself. It would be a pretty herculean task to portray K. K. Slider's chill vibes without making him seem affluent or cocky in the context of battle, which would be important to do since he is very much neither of those things. He also doesn't really do much other than sing and the normal routine that Villager and Isabelle use wouldn't really fit him very well, which makes things even harder because I seriously doubt he'd be the type to smash his guitar on people.

I'd still say the Animal Crossing games were lesser known to the mainstream up until New Leaf, which I would say is comparable to FE Awakening in terms of the popularity boost it gave the series. If you look at the New Horizons sales numbers compared to New Leaf, the numbers have increased dramatically.

Still a pretty bad comparison I made, the general point I'm trying to get across is that Animal Crossing has surged in popularity this year, more than it ever has before.

Any given fighter having been Sakurai's idea doesn't mean he's lying. Nintendo is playing a very active role in DLC selection. But Sakurai in this case is not some doormat when it comes to this discussion.
