Would a ? Block count as a character in this instance? Since it isn't technically a character but somehow got in over a bunch of other characters?

There are actual walking blocks in Super Mario Bros. 3, which is a character for all intents and purposes in fiction.

...Also, there's the joke about Toads being trapped in blocks, so.

The only ones I can really think of that would get a majority of people angry would be like, an obscure Non-video game character.

Because like a lot of people like/understood Byleth's inclusion, and I've seen a good amount of people open to the idea of Fortnite, Byleth and the Idea of Fortnite definitely ruffled a LOOOOOOOT of Feathers but I wouldn't consider that a majority just yet. Obscure characters wouldn't cause that much outrage because a lot of people are open to the idea of characters they haven't seen before. Again they have detractors but not nearly as much as someone like the Human Kid from Doraemon or some **** would cause.

And then I realized that Call Of Duty is a thing. that actually might take the cake.

I know people have generally soured on Overwatch for a number of reasons (many quite justified) and the idea of her getting into Smash, but even as someone who's never played it, I can't help but think she would have a pretty fun moveset from what I've seen and read.

...I'd joke about Steve, but honestly, there's a tiny few people who went overboard. There's nothing wrong with him being disliked, but anyone who wants to leave Smash forever really needs to grow up. Just don't buy the character or freaking get over it. Disappointment is absolutely understandable.

Other than that, it's hard to find someone severely disliked. Apathetic to, sure. My pick, Brian, is going to have a lot of "Who?", but there's actually a truckload of fans of him too. And there's also a truckload of haters(though some might just hate the game, less so the character idea).

Also, totally unfair. You picked the only two series overhated at this point. XD

I still don't think obscure characters will get that big of a rise out of people, As seen with Terry a lot of people while they didn't know him, accepted him, I saw very little Terry hate, The most I saw was from 12 year olds on Twitter. The "Literally who?" comments were few and far between. I wasn't on Smashboards when Terry happened so it could have been completely different but whatever.

The reason for that is Terry is from a series that is actually not hated in general. SNK and its various fighting games, while niche, are quite popular.

A lot of obscure characters don't have that luxury. Which is sad too. More popular characters are often more easily going to get more haters too, due to simply being more known. Exposure goes both ways.

Rean Schwarzer from Trails of Cold Steel would get many people mad because he's a literally who blue-haired anime swordsman. I think he'd be cool though, even if I would prefer Adol as the Falcom rep.

Estelle and Rean are like Tied for me, My most wanted is a Trails character. I would much prefer Estelle but Rean would be fantastic as well.

Any character that's a massive ? outside of Nintendo's stronghold regions, partly because the response would generally be massive confusion and / or "why the hell did this get in instead of [insert character here]?". The primary example would be Garena Free Fire (mobile Fortnite), who Zhuge noted is "one of the biggest games that half the world has never heard of."
