So it looks like Nintendo is finally utilizing that gifts feature again with Dragon Quest XI and its demo. This ultimately doesn't mean much for speculation, but I know we had a discussion about that feature earlier so it's nice that it isn't going completely unused
On the contrary, it got boosted because people searched "Erdrick" to no avail, but no one searched "Hero", as it was too generic of a name, and Banjo was confirmed. Also, it has been shown that Artorias was a glitch because it was the name of a DLC pack, which made Google associate it with DLC. Watch the whole video.
Has this been shown, or is this just some BS fan theory? Because I haven't seen any proof of this, or anything regarding the Google theory for that matter. Its continued existence hinges on the fact that nothing about it is falsifiable one way or the other. You can say "Artorias was a glitch" because the layperson doesn't understand how Google's algorithms work. You can say that Hero would've triggered the ad, but it's impossible to verify that too when they don't trigger for anyone now, and the pool of people who could search names was always limited to those with European ISPs. And yet nobody can explain why the ads were there in the first place, why they were only triggered by incredibly specific keywords, or if they worked on any other characters people never had the chance to test.
Quote me later, but I've been calling Google Leak real from day one. So when Doom Slayer and Ryu Hayabusa are confirmed as the final two Fighter's Pass characters, I will happily gloat for being one of the few people that called it.
Not to place a tremendous amount of importance on "being right" on the internet, because I absolutely don't, but remember that the opposite is also true. If the rumor is false (and it probably is) then you're one of the few people currently falling for it.
Friendly reminder that the argument against having multiple characters with similar appeal in the same pass isn't that it would make people mad; you're always going to upset someone with your choices and those people are usually a vocal minority anyway.
The real reason I see them going for more variety with DLC is that it draws in a bigger crowd. You're more likely to get more DLC sales or even full fighter pass sales if there's a different character for everyone on there.
That said, I also don't think this is good enough evidence to discount any character just yet.

I just hope they also put this Spirit in the Board a few months after, like they did with Partner Pikachu and Eevee.
Part of me does wish the feature was used for more than Bonus Spirits, but my guess is that the way Gifts was implemented means Nintendo is probably testing ways to do add this kind of thing to their games without a major update.
Crash would inherently play completely differently from Banjo tho. Plus I don't think people can get too salty about multiple platformer characters/video game icons coming to a platform fighter/huge crossover fighter. And in terms of showcasing variety, we're past the bigger half point of the Pass, advertising a good idea of what the Pass will be like to all, and have only seen two completely different genres represented, and usually in Smash we end on kind of a wet fart of a reveal that was out-prioritised by the much bigger ones anyway, at least in terms of well-received picks.
Admittedly I think Crash is my worst example due to him being such an icon, but I am still pretty skeptical of his inclusion for this reason. Sure he would play different from Banjo, but they are both anthromorphs from platformers with similar aesthetics. Having both of them in Smash I could have seen, but having both of them on the fighter pass I'm very skeptical of.
I also don't agree (personally) that Smash ends on weak reveals. I think it's just that people are often upset by the last reveal because it's not the one they were holding out hope for.
I don’t see any reason the Google “leak” could be true; while, yes, it could be a screw up from Nintendo in the Netherlands (that’s the website the ad took you to), it’s far more likely either a troll or angry employee paid for it for a while because:
1. Dragon Quest characters like Erdrick and Luminary didn’t trigger the ad.
2. Artorias nor anyone other than Joker triggered the real ad from Nintendo, the one that took you directly to the Smash Bros. website.
3. While “Hero” could have triggered the ad, we have no proof of this.
4. If we’re assuming names have to be exact and that’s why DQ characters didn’t trigger the ad, then Banjo shouldn’t have triggered it either when just using “Banjo” or even “Banjo-Kazooie” since “Doom Slayer” is the only one that worked for Doomguy and the duo is called “Banjo & Kazooie.”
Honestly I was kind of hoping it was real before, too, but that’s only because Banjo-Kazooie was on it and I even started to not believe the Google thing before their reveal since it seemed it could easily be faked by any troll willing to be stupid and waste a good amount of money to mess with people (assuming they actually needed a lot like what was said).
I pretty much knew the google theory was sadly fake since artorias is on there and the last time I check artorias is a dlc boss from the first dark souls.
1) Sakurai has expressed that he wished more video game characters used axes, and she is a very prominent Nintendo character who uses an axe. By adding her, Sakurai would finally get to make a moveset for an axe user, like how he went with Incineroar because he wanted to make a wrestler.
2) Fire Emblem: Three Houses is on track to become the highest selling Fire Emblem title by far if early sales estimates are taken into account. As such, more people would likely be excited for a character from the game. Cross-promotion is an added bonus, as Edelgard being added to Smash would likely drive Three Houses sales even further. The fact that critical and fan reception to Three Houses has been overwhelmingly positive is another added draw.
3) It's fairly easy to adapt some of the more unique key features of Three Houses into Edelgard's moveset, making her true to her home game. Her ultimate personal skill, for example, Flickering Flower, is a strong attack that then prevents the enemy from moving on the next turn. Similar effects are done through the game's newly introduced Gambit system, wherein Battalions could have these sorts of effects on enemies. This would give Edelgard a unique playstyle of holding foes in place or limiting their movement to more easily land an even stronger follow-up attack. This sort of authoritative playstyle would also fit her character.
4) Garreg Mach Monastery would provide a very unique setting for a Smash Bros. stage. It could be a traveling stage that takes the player throughout different parts of the campus, the cathedral, and other areas on the monastery grounds. Three Houses, being a Switch game, could also provide assets to use for this. The fact that the stage wouldn't need to be made from scratch decreases the necessary development time.
5) In many ways, the Smash Bros. roster is a sort of time capsule, holding characters from many different eras of gaming. Edelgard would be the first playable character to debut on the Switch, which is a nice added benefit. It also adds another contemporary character in general, which may be seen as a plus.
There are other benefits as well to her addition, such as having another non-selectable-avatar female character to add some more diversity, as well as the vast array of music they could pull from Three Houses to put on the Fighter Pass, but I think these first five are strong enough for now.
Not gonna lie after picking up Three Houses last week and falling in love with it, Edelgard has become a personal favorite of mine to get in. Sure they could go the safe route and pick Byleth but Edelgard is the most popular and has the best design both dialogue and aesthetic wise imo. And with an axe and a more intricate moveset that can stem from 3H, she has a lot of potential. Maybe Sakurai can find a way for her to yield both a lance and axe and just switch between at will, to finally have the FE weapon triangle complete or something?
I too feel that Smash and especially Ultimate, is a hallway of gaming history of both beloved and innovative titles that have to be associated with Nintendo at least a little. When I see Mario, Young Link, BK, Joker, Donkey Kong, etc. I think Super Mario World, Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, Persona 5, Donkey Kong Country, etc. I think of the masterpiece hallmark games there from, achievements throughout the history of gaming represented in one way or another.
Admittedly I think Crash is my worst example due to him being such an icon, but I am still pretty skeptical of his inclusion for this reason. Sure he would play different from Banjo, but they are both anthromorphs from platformers with similar aesthetics. Damn, I myself wouldn't be so "speciest"
I'd say at least with Ultimate, it's worth noting they saved "the obligatory new Pokemon" for last after the big, popular ones of Inkling, Ridley, Simon Belmont, King. K Rool and even Isabelle?
I pretty much knew the google theory was sadly fake since artorias is on there and the last time I check artorias is a dlc boss from the first dark souls.
Artorias is the left field pick to make the fake list pop out more. Without him, the list is just the same stock list we got since that 5chan "leak". Including a Dark Souls character that is not the main character will make people talk and tempt them to believe it.

Artorias of the Abyss, which is apparently a DLC pack for Dark Souls Remastered.
Also I saw that Doom 2016 also had DLC and Doom Slayer is his name in said game. That could also be part of why he triggered the ad. Not sure about Ryu, though.
Also, what about Banjo? Didn't just "Banjo" trigger the ad but "Banjo & Kazooie" (the website's name for the fighter) didn't? If the names have to be EXACT (judging by Doom Slayer) then it puts a big hole in the theory.
Yeah, not sure how that would be used to explain Google theory still being viable--from what I read, that came out later last year, whereas Google theory became popular early this year--the connection seems tenuous. I'm not saying it's 100% deconfirmed, as you never can say that, but it was a poorly concieved theory then, and I'd be surprised if it ended up being true.
Then again, the reasoning for Box theory made no sense, and that ended up being true.
Imagine Sakurai comes to you asking for input on the last dlc character. He'll put them in if you do a good job convincing him. What are the top five reasons you'd give to justify your single, most-wanted character? Sell your pick.
1. Iconic Mascot - Crash Bandicoot is a celebrated gaming mascot character. When people list the top gaming characters of all time, Mario, Sonic, and Crash are all on the top. People all over the world recognize Crash and would be excited seeing all three in the same game for the first time. No longer an exclusive, Activision would make a great new partnership to be included in Smash. He even received an infamous cameo appearance in another Naughty Dog game, Uncharted 4, recreating that sense of nostalgia of playing that boulder chasing sequence for the first time.
2. Platforming Move Potential - To be included in a game that originated as a platforming fighting game, Crash fits perfectly in Smash. From his iconic spin, to memorable moments such as him riding a motorcycle, there are many iconic moves and moments that could be incorporated in his moveset while remaining faithful to the character. His final Smash could utilize his Aku Aku mask after collecting three of them, running across the stage to hit those he runs into.
3. Memorable Setting - N. Sanity Beach is a very memorable setting to be used as Crash's stage, giving people a sense of nostalgia for when Crash washed up on that shore (fans have already turned it into what it would look like as a stage, with those familiar crates in the background). And it has very catchy cartoonish and zany music that could be included. Fun fact, Marks Mothersbaugh, co-founder of Devo and composer of Rugrats, picked Mancell to compose the soundtrack and oversaw earlier development.
4. A 3D Revolution - Along with Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot was also among the first games to explore in a 3D space. It also had a nice combination of 3D graphics within 2D like level designs to help those transitioning into a new era, though was still quite graphically intensive and impressed reviewers upon release. I'd leave the fancier details to those who know this kinda stuff.
5. N Sane Sales - When it came out it was a commercial success in the US, Europe and Japan, making it one of the top 10 Playstation games of all time. Its renewed interest thanks to the N Sane Trilogy has brought Crash back in the public consciousness, especially those who are Switch owners, after years of uncertainty of the franchise's future. Both the N Sane Trilogy and CTR: Nitro Fueled were the top selling games of their respective weeks in the U.K.
6th secret reason. I wouldn't mention this to Sakurai since it's not something he'd care about, but Crash was a big mascot for Sony back in the day. To have Nintendo's mascot, Sega's mascot, Sony's former mascot, and a Microsoft-owned character all in the same game would be absolutely incredible. Ultimate already is, but that's the icing on the cake.
Yeah, not sure how that would be used to explain Google theory still being viable--from what I read, that came out later last year, whereas Google theory became popular early this year--the connection seems tenuous. Then again, the reasoning for Box theory made no sense, and that ended up being true. .
Which is why I was trying to saw why it was NOT viable xD With tons of DLC on the eShop for many games I don't know why Artorias' would be magically singled out.
I'd say at least with Ultimate, it's worth noting they saved "the obligatory new Pokemon" for last after the big, popular ones of Inkling, Ridley, Simon Belmont, King. K Rool and even Isabelle?
IMO, Incineroar is only the last reveal in the most technical sense. He was the last revealed base roster character, but in terms of hype cycle both Plant and Joker were revealed before the game was released (Plant in the same direct as Incineroar), so to me they count.
It becomes "see, Hero got in, so my anime sword guy can get in too. Why not have the rest of the fighter pass be FE characters? Sakurai can make them unique!" I realize I'm being hyperblic, but whether that character in question is Lloyd, or Edelgard or Byleth or whoever, it's like people are trivializing the argument to an extreme.
Agreed wholeheartedly. Because two "anime swordsmen" (if you want to call Joker a sword user) got in, folks suddenly think their straightforward, plainish fighter has a chance. I like 3H, and would be happy if a rep got in, but any sword user is extremely unlikely at this point unless they can pull off something unique and cool. Joker and Hero have unique gimmics that make them powerful, Chrom and Lucina are echoes, Shulk has Monado Arts (if you want to call him anime), Corrin is a water dragon that duel wields, Robin uses magic, etc, etc. All of the "generic anime swordsmen" since Brawl or debatably even Melee have a defining gimmic that makes them stand out from the others.
I do think Banjo & Kazooie may slightly hurt Crash's chances, both being platforming mascot characters from the 90s. However, despite being a bigger Banjo & Kazooie fan, I admit Crash is insanely more popular and more well known, and while I don't think they're going to top the first 3 (the Fighter's Pass model, business wise, should emphasize the most marketable characters first), Crash would be the best way to top what we currently know. Plus, I think if another character is humanoid, which it likely is, I think it's more balanced to have 2 animals and 3 humanoid characters in the Fighter's Pass, rather than 1 (1.5?) animal and 4 humanoid characters. Like Tweek joked, are we going to get 4 human dudes with swords and guns, and Banjo?
Which is why I was trying to saw why it was NOT viable xD With tons of DLC on the eShop for many games I don't know why Artorias' would be magically singled out.
Yeah, while I wasn't certain, I figured from you talking about Doom that's what you were talking about, but wanted to expand my thoughts on it, as that is exactly what I thought. I searched "Artorias DLC" wondering if something new came out after the Google theory, and kept getting confused--wait, that came out in 2012? Oh wait, there was a remaster, but the DLC came out last year?
So it looks like Nintendo is finally utilizing that gifts feature again with Dragon Quest XI and its demo. This ultimately doesn't mean much for speculation, but I know we had a discussion about that feature earlier so it's nice that it isn't going completely unused
Oh that's interesting to know, I thought they abandoned that feature after the Partner Pikachu and Eevee spirits and radio silence afterwards but I guess they probably don't want to overdo it and come off like they where trying to get people to buy games just for this I suppose.

1.The protagonist of a successful Nintendo title still getting unpresedented support five years after it's initial launch
Captain Toad was a surprising hit for the Wii U and Nintendo themselves deemed it worth porting to not only the Switch, but also the 3DS in July 2018 making it one of the few modern Nintendo games to be on all three systems. These new ports even included new levels to intergrate it as a prequel to Mario Odyssey rather than 3D World.
In February of 2019 the Switch game recieved a free update which allowed true 2 Player compatibility. In March 2019 it recieved a (cheap) paid DLC that added a collection of new levels and missions with some revolving around the co-op ability. These levels were still perfectly playable in single player, but were enhanced with two players.
Captain Toad is one of very few games to recieve a LABO update in July 2019. The only other games to get this were huge hits in Mario Odyssey, Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and (very briefly) Smash Ultimate.
Lastly, although speculation on my part, if we ever DO get a 3D World port I have no doubt Captain Toad will get it's 3D World levels back in an update too. Nintendo seem to be supporting Captain Toad Treasure Tracker in a way I couldn't have expected.
2. One of the very few true world reknown Nintendo All Stars left
Toad is a big face of Nintendo. Between the success of his own game, his constant playable appearances throughout Mario's various games, being used heavily for promotion by Nintendo themselves and even having Toads upgraded to the Player 3(and temporary player 4) of modern Mario games, Toad's a very well recognised character with 30+ years on his resume.
You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't know who Toad is, and he's doing plenty well with the newest generation of gamers if his game's success is anything to go by. Since classic Toad and Blue Toad are stapled to the princesses, Captain Toad is a more than acceptable replacement who can offer some unique attributes.
3. Unique gameplay options
Okay, so there's been a lot of conversation of whether or not Captain Toad, should he get in the game, be able to jump or not. There's ways around it for sure such as:
Having him being able to slightly jump(as he CAN in a cutscene in his own game and Mario Galaxy references him wall jumping at one point)
Having him spawn platforms undeneath to increase his height and airtime
Have something carry him upwards like a Flaptor. Similar to Duck Hunt but for his regular jumps.
Have him completely unable to perform regular jumps but have a great up + b recovery that he can attack out of to make up for it
Outside his lack of vertical height, his heavy backpack can be used for an interesting gameplay mechanic; a character that becomes HEAVIER as time goes on with him collecting gems or other items and projectiles and putting them in his backpack, losing his weak jump height for more durability.
A tiny super heavyweight character is also unprecedented and would be pretty interesting to see. Who needs to jump if you're so heavy it's incredibly hard to launch you anyway?
That's not to mention my own personal ideas for Captain Toad's unique gameplay which include platform manipulation, walking up walls and a few other fun bits which you can see here in this animated moveset video if you so wish:
4. A 2 for 1 character deal
If you get Captain Toad, you'd better believe you also get Toadette. She's been a rising star in recent years with her making platforming appearances in Super Mario Run, Mario Maker 2 and of course rather famously; Super Mario U Deluxe. Toadette has a lot of fans in her own right, so this inclusion can appeal to fans of two characters.
Also his alts write themselves with the other members of the Toad Brigade, no doubt some kind of classic Toad costume, classic Toadette and maybe even Toadsworth or Kinopio-kun, the social network green Toad mascot who has a following over in Japan and a selection of very weird LABO creations dedicated to him.
Imagine Sakurai comes to you asking for input on the last dlc character. He'll put them in if you do a good job convincing him. What are the top five reasons you'd give to justify your single, most-wanted character? Sell your pick.
1. FPS Reps: First thing I would point out is that we don't have a FPS rep. We have pretty much all genres represented at this point. This is the biggest one we're missing! Plus, a LOT of other FPS games would feel waaaaay more off-putting in Smash (Call of Duty, Battefield, Star Wars Battlefront, RAGE, Wolfenstein, etc.).
2. Legacy: He's an icon. Doomguy may not be the first FPS protagonist, but he made the series what it is today. The DOOM games have been remastered and referenced countless times. They literally just re-released the original 3 on the Switch! And the 2016 as well as Eternal games are also on/going to be on the Switch. If you ask an FPS fan who Doomguy is, 9/10 can tell you who he is.
3. He's easier to make: For voice acting, you just need grunts. He doesn't talk, which saves plenty of time for programming. This would give time for them to really flesh out his moveset and focus more on design.
4. There is great aesthetic potential: His stage could be either Hell (probably named "The Underworld" or something like that) or the Mars base. There is plenty of bada** music to fight to. And spirits could be used without gore. The pixelated classic designs aren't that gory, and even new designs aren't all blood filled.
5. Pleasing fans (in a way): I don't know why, but the Collector's Edition of Doom Eternal is not availible for the Switch. To make up for this (which I was kinda pissed when I realized I was too late to switch to my PS4 to get the Collector's Edition), Doomguy could be added to Smash. Nintendo and Bethesda already are good friends, and this would increase sales of DOOM games on the Switch and DOOM fans without a Switch might want to get one, just for the idea of Doomguy blasting Kirby in the face with the Super Shotgun.
That is how I would try and convince him (maybe leaving out the Doomguy blasting Kirby part).
Bonus Reason: His moveset could be crazy. His tether could be the Meat Hook, allowing him to pull enemies close and then blast them back by pulling the trigger once hooked. His spike could be just an aerial curb stomp. He could utilize his blade from Eternal to attack as if it was a sword. And you can replace so many moves with different guns he uses. His recovery could be a pure shotgun blast below him (Like Mii Gunner, but straight up). The Kirby costume could just give Kirby his helmet and whatever gun they chose to put in Doomguy's hands.
It would be such a cool moveset.
(can a mod combine my 2 posts, i just realized i selected reply and not edit)
They DID try "Luminary" and "Erdrick" and neither of them triggered the ad. You need to input a very specific name to get the Fighters' Pass ad. We know this because neither Doomguy nor Doom Marine brought up the ad, but "Doom Slayer" succeeded. I don't think "Arusu" would have worked since that is the name of the costume, not the character.
I believe Google Theory could be right if Artorias was removed. I'll be generous and say that the theory has a 20% to 30% chance of being true, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out false.
I always thought Artorias would make a better Boss than a fighter. Thought maybe a Boss theme version upgrade would be cool. Where they add several bosses in some sort of new mode. :/
Toad is one of those characters I can only ask, "How has he not gotten in yet?". He's been a star since before Geno and long before Waluigi, has had more recent appearances than either (If we're counting Toadette as Toad), and has had his own game! Maybe it's sort of a Tingle thing- how a character who's popular enough to get several spinoffs but is so despised here (I see Toad hate more than I see love) that adding him to smash would be foolish. He'd be a really cool character- maybe a Little Mac sort of role where he has crappy air game at best, but fantastic ground game. Give him a bunch of references in his moveset- his up special could be the Propeller Mushroom (ala Crusade) or even the Toad Ship from Galaxy, his DB could be a SMB2 reference, etc. He's a legacy character that should have gotten in a while ago imo
Frankly I would be shocked if we got any FE characters in the Fighter Pass. I think Nintendo learned their lesson with Corrine. Three Houses is new, and people are into it right now, and so there is a bit of Edelgard momentum, but with FE characters I think it goes beyond "anime sword user." It doesn't really matter that Edelgard wields an axe, the point is that she's a Fire Emblem character. Which means she brings an FE aesthetic, FE mechanics, FE music, FE stage, FE spirits, FE mii costumes, etc.

That implies that the vocal minority on Gamefaqs are teaching Nintendo a lesson, and frankly I doubt that's the case.
The people who actually get upset over a fictional character on a crossover fighting party game roster are miniscule compared to the over all playerbase. There is no lesson to be learned on Nintendo's end.

I mean Sakurai was having doubts about adding another Fire Emblem rep but the developers convinced him once he said of how unique Corrin was. Still caused backlash. Certain he'd be cautious this time about adding yet again another Fire Emblem character.
I feel like if they were going for a TH promotional pick they would have been revealed by now, given that the game has been out for almost a month now.
I think I made this question before but
what character would cause the most salt to the smash fandom if that said character is the fifth and last character for fighter pass.

Well, Idk if there is any real data to look at which can quantify the perceived backlash for the purposes of this discussion, but I think that minimizing this to Gamefaqs users (in light of that board's reputation) isn't entirely fair. Based on interviews Sakurai himself seems aware that Fire Emblem is in the realm of over representation, and the characters included in Ultimate imply Nintendo is paying close attention (I'd argue too much attention) to fan demand.
But personally I have never been anywhere in the Smash community where the idea of FE over-representation was alien.
I don't expect Tracer at all, and I don't play Overwatch, but to me Tracer seems like such a good idea. She's a current gaming icon with a unique gimmick that represents the hero shooter genre better than any other. I guess I believe (this is entirely my personal preference) that Smash should be going for big iconic names at this point. Characters that don't feel like they're literally just the 80th character in line, but instead feel like they've just been made possible.
Too many fan suggestions at this point feel like they're just scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I'd say either the chorus kids or if he don't want to add a spirits as a fighter, Tibby from rhythm heaven megamix. For both character they will pretty much fight the same way and I will use the 5 same reasons.
1. Rhythm game representation: Smash bros Ultimate have so many video game genres represented that wen you think about it, it's quite surprising that we don't have any characters that represent rhythm games. Not only the genre by itself is very unique and it would be interesting to have it in smash, but it could also bring a very unique way of playing the character.
2. Nintendo franchise: At this point, there's not a lot of new Nintendo franchises that can be added in Smash bros ultimate already big roster. Rhythm heaven is probably one of the biggest Nintendo franchise that still doesn't have any character playable. The franchises have 4 games and the DS game sold 3 millions units and other games in the franchise selling pretty well. The franchises also have a pretty big following that always do some fan animations and remixes.
3. Unique art styles: Rhythm heaven is very a unique games, not only because of the gameplay but also the art style. This could bring a very interesting and different stages for Smash bros.
4. Could help rhythm heaven become more popular: Just like Fire emblem after Melee and Kid icarus after Brawl, adding a Rhythm heaven character in Smash bros could help to make the franchise more popular on the Nintendo switch.
