A new gen wouldn't celebrate the entire franchise any more than a remake. Any content representing other Gens could easily be placed in either game and fullfill the same purpose. TPC has Let's Go Johto and the the Sinnoh remakes are likely in the oven while their next Gen is being worked on anyways, its not likely we'll get a brand new Generation of Pokemon games this soon anyways. There's usually at least one followup title per Generation be it the 'third version', a sequel, or remake Sword and Shield will likely get some sort of followup before this Generation's over. The DLC isn't going to cut it on its own especially given the extra marketing and merchandising another Gen 8 game will bring. 2022 is more likely for a new Generation imo.
They could just be working on something completely different. A brand new type of main series game.

I don't think they have a policy about only having generic designs. Origami King and Odyssey did have unique original characters.

If you mean the Paper Mario interview, it was about making different versions of existing characters. It seems they are not against it but want to have them only created by the main team so they can manage them more easily.

Also, I wouldn't say it contradicts with their philosophy when they are trying out new things. It's just those new things are usually gameplay related ther than lore related.
Okay, that makes more sense now, I didn't have all of the information and I thought it extended to more than just that Paper Mario title. Also by doing that, they are trying something new, which is kinda funny that I didn't even make that connection when writing the post lol

Idk about you but for me celebrating an anniversary has always been more about looking back than looking forward.

To that end I think a remake does fit better than a new gen.

But it's not like they would've decided to make a Gen 4 remake because of the anniversary. The timing just would've worked out that way, and then, like with the Years of Yoshi and Luigi (and potentially Zelda next year), which were also just serendipitous timing, it's up to the marketing teams whether they opt to cash in on the coincidence.

The Mario one I think actually had a lot more thought behind it, but ultimately it probably happened, not due to some grand design from the inception, but due to the theme parks and the Olympics, which are, ironically, things we are no longer getting this year.

I think people are overestimating how much effort they're putting into the 25th anniversary.

Realistically, they'll probably continue with everything that was already planned, but throw in some small events and merchandise throughout the year to commemorate the milestone. I guess there could possibly be something like a few old Pokemon games being ported to the Switch, but I'm not expecting any high budget games made specifically for the anniversary.

Any Pokemon main series game, no matter what, makes millions. They can easily go experimental and create a whole new Pokemon experience.
They can, but this is also assuming a whole lot of what-ifs. They 'could' make something brand new that no one could see coming... or Gen 4 remakes, which have seemed likely for awhile, and is likely due to Pokemon's MO.

I'm honestly expecting nothing, and I would much prefer Gen 1 or 2 remakes to Gen 4.

......we've had TWO Gen 1 remakes. Let Gen 1 rest.
Not when GF likes shoving it everywhere, especially considering next year's anniversary. And, Gen 1 only had one true remake, and that was on the GBA.

Gen 1 already has a remake on Switch

They know that they would still get a ton of sales even if they radically change the formula. Sun and Moon proves that.
And sword and shield proves that they can get away with the bear minimum and still make a killing.

Well for 1 it was incredibly recent, and I think its the first public confirmation of it (there was something similar earlier, but it was centered around just Miamotto).

Sakurai seems to have had the most creative freedom in regards to the Super Mario series, but with Nintendo making the character choices, there's no way a character like Geno or Waluigi is going to be added. The only reason why I haven't thought so until now is because I hadn't put 2 and 2 together yet.
It was recent, but not as recent as the July 20th debacle when you had still had a bunch of people that should know better on the Geno train. Hell, I even remember the justification after that interview being "don't worry, Geno is already a spirit, so Sakurai plays by different rules!" or something like that.

Are people just that blinded by hype that they're missing something that should be obvious, or are we the ones reading too much into the Tanabe thing?

Even so, I would hope GameFreak isn't so dense as to believe that they can sell basically the same game they just sold not two ye-

...

Oh wait...

LGPE changed the formula more than S/M did.
I can't believe how true this is. The Let's Go games changed how the entire game worked, while all Sun and Moon did was rebrand their gyms and made them more lazily/less interestingly.

Man I just want another Pokemon strategy rpg at this point, it doesn't even have to be Conquest 2 I just think another one would be neat.
Challenger pack 7 would also be cool. If only we lived in a world where such concepts could actually exist and not be a figment of imagination.

I wonder if there's a Zelda All-Stars, what games would we get? Mario pretty much got one big mainline 3D title per console, barring Galaxy 2 (and we all know how that turned out), but Zelda has gotten more. I guess we'd probably get OoT and skip MM, but which game do we get for the GameCube? TP or WW? Or do we get both and skip SS? So many questions...
I can see Nintendo releasing standalone ports of Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword HD by a lower price ($40?). WW and TP were already remastered for WiiU so they shouldn’t be too much problem (I can see them being the first ones released as they were already playable in another HD console), Skyward Sword need some tweks but shouldn’t be a big problem. There is also the posibility to release N3DS version of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. Contrary to SM64 DS version, this ones doesn’t have (IIRC) substantial differences on content, except for graphics and that.

Legend of Zelda is Nintendo flagship IP for their core gamers, like Mario is for families, Animal Crossing for non-enthusiast gamers, Splatoon for multiplayer crowd and Pokémon for kids. So I think they will celebrate their anniversary correctly.

So to resume, yes, I can see release next fiscal year (2021-22) ports of Ocarina of Time 3D, Majoras Mask 3D, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Skyward Sword HD and the sequel of Breath of the Wild. They can give the port task to Grezzo and Tantalus.

For Pokémon ? I can see releasing a Gen 4 Remake (for holidays) and, maybe via a GB/GBA Online system? ROM ports of the first three generations.

Probably not for several more years. I think that Sinnoh remakes will come out in 2023.
I don't think there's a scenario in which that is likely. I feel like either they're coming next year, or they're gonna have to wait a while longer for their Let's Go remake.

The fact that Gen 4 is next up for a proper remake makes me question where the time has gone. I remember when Fire Red/Leaf Green first came out, and knowing that sometime soon, Gen 4 and even 5 might be remade... Idk, there's a lot of existential questions rushing through my head now.

It's also pretty clear BoTW2 has been delayed from 2020. So I don't know why Nintendo just doesn't come out and say it has been delayed like with MP4. And besides it's more fitting for it be released for the series's 35th anniversary
I'm so tired of people saying this to random posters to people pretending to be reliable insiders. BotW2 was never intended for a 2020 release, do you know how I know this to be a fact? Because they never showed a planned release date but rather had the same thing shown as MP4. And Bayo 3. And SMTV

Every time they said this instead of a release date, it's been clear that the game's only starting development right then and there, not that it'll be available during a certain period of time. MP4's confirmation of a delay is also very different, the game restarted development completely with a different team working on it.

I think they're trying to follow in Disney's footsteps by sterilizing the IP and making it as soulless as possible to make casuals more familiar with the series. It makes sense with the new movie and theme park coming out, too.
Yes, and this is something that I absolutely hate.
Years ago I was a diehard Mario and Zelda fan, now occasionally I still play those franchises, but I stopped being an obsessive fan of them when I realized they were "sterilizing" them, and it's something that started out with the DS/Wii. I only play them when I'm 100% sure that I'm going to enjoy the game and replay it multiple times in the future... if it does not interest me, I just skip it. I skipped many entries so far, including 3D World and Odyssey.
Nintendo is slowly doing it with all their franchises, and I'm disappointed of that. Smash is the same thing, and other games are as well.
They some time ago said that "Metroid Prime 4 may seem an hardcore game, but we didn't forget about the casual players" and while I like the Metroid series, I have very little expectations of MP4 because of that sentence.
Heck, there's a reason for why I dislike Bandana Waddle Dee so much, it's because I think he's part of that exact process of "sterilization" of the Kirby franchise; luckily Kumazaki brought back all the old characters and references to the old games, but the francise still feels like it's getting "sterilized" regardless due to how every game uses the same formula, engine and visual style of the Wii game and it's getting stale; I bought Star Allies only as a way to say thank you to HAL for bringing back Adeleine, I would have happily skipped it too if it wasn't for that.

But the most iconic case of Nintendo's sterilization is the NSMB series, the Miis and all the Mii-based games. I never touched the Mii feature of my Switch, I freaking hate those dull avatars and I want them to disappear in the void.

Except they had an entire cutscene to show us and they’re building this game off the first game’s engine, meaning a large portion of development time is taken care of

To be fair, that doesn't mean it's delayed. They flat out never gave us a release date to begin with, can't say something is delayed if you don't even know when it's coming out in the first place.

That means the game will take less time to complete but it doesn't change how they didn't have the confidence to say '2020 release' and that even with reused assets games take years to make. As for the cutscene, there's a good chance that the CG trailer wasn't made in game like with Bayo 3 and SMTV's announcement trailers back in 2017. It doesn't matter if they're reusing assets to shorten the workload if the game's still going to be huge using significantly more advanced tech than they had 20 years ago with significantly larger teams than back in the day.

TLDR Still not a 2020 release date

Unless you're working on the game, no one's in a position to say when BotW 2 will come out and how far it's gotten in development.

We got what appeared to be specific cutscenes from what I'd assume is the beginning of the game. At the very least, it didn't seem like they had just started development. However, there's still a lot we don't know. The game could launch as early as 2020 or as late as 2022. We haven't been given a whole lot to work with since E3 2019.
