Implying Namco would choose Heihachi or Lloyd instead of DonChan who is the only Namco character that has crossed over with Mario that is not in Smash yet (except for a cameo) and would definitely push Taiko's international sells now that they decided to localize it, plus way more unique than those two and representing rhythm games.
As someone who bought Taiko no Tatsujin on Switch yesterday after a joke conversation about Don-chan in Smash and promptly fell in love I would be so pleased. This is a Don-chan stan account now.

It aldo boggles my mind how people thing Lloyd would get in over the more popular and more known Yuri
Didn't Bandai Namco decide to put Yuri in Project X Zone 2 instead of Lloyd? It seemed interesting to bring up for the topic of how popular each of them are.

Yeah... KOS-MOS is not gonna be chosen by either Nintendo or Bandai-Namco, Xenosaga as a series is not seen as profitable to both companies and neither are interested in reviving the series or the character. If she gets chosen it would be entirely on Sakurai's hands (and I heavily doubt this since Nintendo are the ones choosing the characters apparently).

Look at it this way. Back in Smash 4 we had Monolith Software and Bandai Namco collaborate together on the same game, yet KOS-MOS didn't make a single appearance in that game, not even as a Mii costume. Bandai Namco just had their 2020 new year collab art of their IPs and KOS-MOS didn't even appear in it. Harada just said recently Xenosaga is not seen as profitable enough to revive. With all of these information put together, why would either Nintendo or Bandai Namco choose KOS-MOS?

Comparing KOS-MOS to Banjo-Kazooie is ignoring the context of the duo's inclusion, Banjo-Kazooie had ridiculous amount of fan demand and Phil Spencer himself wanted to put the duo in Smash. KOS-MOS doesn't have either strong fan demand or a person at Bandai Namco who wants to push the character to Nintendo. I fail to see how KOS-MOS measures up to Tekken or Tales in terms of priority.
A link to this artwork please? Just want to see it.

From what I can tell it's basically like this.
Symphonia was the big one in the west so western people tend to take Lloyd in high regard.
Yuri's banned from official popularity polls because he keeps winning with significantly more votes than the runner ups

Now you might not know who Michael Wilson is, but I assure you, he needs no lengthy introduction. He's the President of the United States and he fights in a mecha and has a shark gun.

He's the US equivalent to Japan's Liberation Maiden:

Even though you're already sold on the idea by now, it is my duty as an American citizen to post a moveset. Okay, let's partyyyy!

Michael (who I'll refer to as Metal Wolf) will be the first non-fighting game character to always face forward, like Terry/Ryu/Ken, but there's a twist. He has a backward special move like Terry, and inputting the attack turns him around each time, making him face the opposite direction. This will allow Metal Wolf to use a back dash boost. He's fighting in a mecha, so his high mobility will be precise as it is clunky. He's a heavyweight that relatively lacks brute strength, but makes up for it with his crazy arsenal that can chip away at opponents' health in a variety of ways.

Miscellaneous: Metal Wolf can't turn around by normal means but he's able to backdash by inputting :GCL: :GCL:

Backdashing damages opponents who are behind Metal Wolf. Hold the button to continue boosting backwards! Pressing attack while doing so causes Metal Wolf to shoot a barrage of bullets in front of him. The bullets have no knockback and deal minor damage. It'll kinda be like this, but slower and without the jumping.

Unfortunately, you can't boost backwards nonstop: there's a gauge which indicates your mech's cooldown levels. If you overheat it, you'll take extra damage and be unable to back dashdash for 15 seconds.

Hover: Metal Wolf can also slow down his descent by holding :GCU: or jump. Hovering drains the boost gauge.

Back Special: Flamethrower
Metal Wolf's back special is an anti-air move that functions like a down smash (hitting in two directions) that turns him around. Great for hitting airborne opponents directly behind you.

Neutral Special: Weapon Select

Similar to Shulk's Monado Arts, hold down the special button to cycle through a list of 5 weapons: handgun, shotgun, grenade launcher, assault rifle, and railgun.

Handgun fires a mid-range blast. It deals 2% damage, but can be chained up to 3 times before being interrupted with a quick reload animation. Causes knockback. Due to its trajectory and Metal Wolf's height, most characters can simply crouch to avoid it.

Shotgun is like a more powerful handgun with less range, but it has a bigger blast radius that you can't avoid by crouching. It deals 10% damage, but it has a reload animation after every shot that could leave you vulnerable.

Grenade Launcher is an explosive projectile which bounces on the ground before detonating. Hold down the special button to increase its range. Can be also be angled. Always deals 7% damage.

Assault rifle has a continuous rate of fire. Deals no knockback. Deals very little damage. Useful for zoning. While airborne, Metal Wolf fires a volley of bullets directly below him.

Railgun: Longest range but very slow startup. Can be angled. Must be fully charged to use. Deals 20% damage.

Side special: Missile Barrage

Tilt to fire 3 weak mid-range homing missiles. When reflected, they blow each other up. Tap to fire 3 fast moving ones without homing capabilities, and continue to hold down the button to fire up to 3 more!

Down Special: The Moonlight Greatsword

Input for Metal Wolf to slash opponents directly in front of him with a familiar looking weapon (heh). Can pin opponents at the tip. Press the button again for him to follow-up with a projectile beam from the blade.

Up Special: Metal Wolf flies rapidly at an angle like:

While using the gatling guns to shoot below himself. Touching him causes damage on impact. The bullets from the gatling gun also deal minor damage and have long range.

Final Smash: RICHAAAAARD!

Mr. President fires a couple of Freedom rounds from his Shark Gun. If they hit, cue cutscene.

Smash Attack: Bazooka. Slow startup but it's a smash attack that's an explosive projectile that fires straight ahead!

Down Smash:

He spins around handguns akimbo. Disjoint attack that doesn't count as a projectile. If the Genlock intro can reference this, so can the President! Freeeedom!

Up Smash: Rifle Shot

Metal Wolf fires a rifle blast directly above him. It has long range and deals more damage the further the opponent is away.

Metal Wolf's forward and backward aerial attacks are boosters that have the dual function of greatly propelling him forward and backwards. They're additional ways to maneuver in midair! His down aerial is dropkick that plunges him to the ground like it does in his home series!

Victory Animation:

Mr. President's taunts are intercom messages from sadistic secretary Jody Crawford. Push the button to overhear Jody casually say crazy stuff like:

Forward Dash Animation/Attack:

After gaining a little momentum, he slouches forward and kinda transforms into a vehicle. During this animation, hold the attack button for weak yet continuous fire.

Dodge animation: Metal Wolf boosts towards the screen like:

I didn't remember his gender and didn't want to call him a guy and be wrong.
I mean, I don't blame you. I thought he was a chick too until I played the game. He has a very effeminate design to be honest. There are lots of guy characters out there with long hair but rarely do you see it so straight and smooth combined with a baby face. Then he opens his mouth and you're left saying, "Oh, of COURSE I knew it was a guy..."

...

Why didn't they just put "Just according to plan." then?

The drum guy from the (at least mostly) Japanese exclusive Taiko no Tatsujin series.
Ok... and why would he certainly be the next Namco rep, as that one guy claimed?

All I know about Yuri is that he's the most androgynous twink on the planet and his game's story is basically "Murder is ok". I'll admit, I'd be somewhat annoyed if he got in due to my only real Tales experience being my 30 hours into Berseria
My experience with the Tales of series is essentially soft locking on Kilia when I tried to play Tales of Symphonia. I couldn't beat her and you can't leave town to go grind. Even if I did grind I don't think I would have had enough money to heal up and certainly wouldn't have enough for replenishing the party's mana. Needless to say I was awful at the game.

It could be a "He's the face of the franchise but fans prefer another" kinda like Ryu and Ken.

I've seen pictures of him about twice, so all I remembered was that he wore purple and had long black hair...Or am I just thinking of Mia?

I always bring this up, and people keep on posting the same interview from 2015 about "Sakurai says Lloyd is the only choice". This was when Yuri's games had never released on the Switch; and Sakurai was split on Cloud because "he doesn't have a huge presence on Nintendo". Keep in mind Cloud is basically the poster boy for the entire genre. Even Itsuno said Dante wasn't possible last year, because of no Nintendo presence.

I accept that it's more of a 50/50 chance of Yuri vs Lloyd getting in. It depends on if Sakurai prioritizes the base series, or the Smash fanbase more. But so far only the most popular characters of each 3rd party series have gotten into Smash. However, I understand that the big difference is that Yuri is more popular, while Lloyd is more requested (within the Smash fanbase).

That said, I just want more people to know that both characters have just as good of a shot as each other. Most of the "evidence" for Lloyd works just as well, if not more so in Yuri's favor.
I think in general, I think smash fandom does ignore a ton of characters in favors of others (Joker and Terry before reveal for instance) and I agree in general that Yuri has more of a shot then people give him credit. However, I still think Lloyd has the edge for one reason alone, he IS popular within the smash fandom and Yuri isn't. When you look at all of the characters who have been added in ultimate, the belmonts, ridley, dark samus, chrom, King K rool, Banjo and even Hero; all of these characters Sakurai has said they were "popular requests" or referenced the smash ballot when talking about them. And as you stated, Lloyd definitely has the edge when you take the ballot as a metric. Meanwhile with Yuri's greatest strength, that he is super popular within the Tales fandom, may not even be a factor considering I don't think Sakurai has ever talked about adding a character because "they were popular within that fandom" (correct me if I'm wrong). If that was the case, we would have Yu over Joker, and Alucard over Simon. Tales as a whole is also too niche to have a character with "mainstream popularity" like Cloud. Again, not saying that Yuri has no chance, in fact I put it 60/40 in Lloyds favor, just saying my opinion on the matter. It will probably be a agree to disagree situation.

I think another important thing to note when talking about post pass is that we don't know what metric Sakurai/ Nintendo are using post pass. For example, if they start with some highly requested character and reiterate they want to "please the fans", then Lloyd probably has the edge. If they want to appeal to the core fandoms, they pick Yuri. However, until they reveal the thought process for post pass, we can't really determine which one is more likely. Just my opinion on this though.

Idk, Lloyd being the 'face' seemed to be a mostly western thing from what I can gather. Yuri's still the main character of his game and again, got banned from official polls to give other characters a shot. That's like an official Pokemon popularity poll removing Pikachu, Mewtwo and Charizard from the list

Dunno. I thought he was kidding. I just know that he's a cute little drum guy and the goal of the game is to smack him in the face to make people dance.

Google is your friend.

Fair point.

Wonder if they'll add Yu in a sequel at some point...

In response to the "Why would KOS-MOS get in over Lloyd or Heihachi" thing earlier, one factor from what I've seen is Gameplay reasons for a characters inclusion. It is one of the Top three big reasons why I imagine Sakurai picks a character(Other than popularity and possible costs) and sometimes that can overtake popularity.

If Sakurai picks her over those two, it'd probably because she brings in a gameplay niche not filled in Smash yet or one that has few characters in. Though that's my thoughts. And I do remember Sakurai saying he considered Heihachi but didn't know how to make him work in Smash, though I bet you that likely changed if Heihachi is DLC.

Just some food for thoughts.

"Sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!"

I love this so much. Metal Wolf Chaos was such a wild game and Michael is such a funny character. Plus I really do want a mech character in Smash. I love the backdash and flamethrower turnaround ideas. This is a lot of fun.

Nintendo presence isn't a hard rule, though.

It wasn't about Cloud having a huge presence. What he said was he wasn't sure if he'd have added him if he had no appearance on a Nintendo console, something he thought of in hindsight(meaning it wasn't really on his mind at the time). It wasn't really a big factor. He already wanted Cloud. Having a Nintendo appearance is a boon because it makes negotiating with a previous contractor a bit easier, but for the most part, it doesn't always do a lot. FF being heavily with Nintendo in itself was probably more important in comparison than a tiny few appearances.

Lloyd is severely popular and well known in the West. Symphonia was a breakout game for Tales of. There's a reason it's held in high regard. Yuri's Nintendo presence isn't going to actually help much to begin with. That's not a heavy factor. There's more to it than that. Lloyd's is also a bigger Nintendo presence as is, which if you want to include a Nintendo factor, it favors Lloyd way more. But being as that's not a big deal in itself, it's a pretty close tie between the two characters. Besides that, you do know when it comes to "being on Nintendo", he was solely talking about 3rd parties and specifically them being playable as a full character, right? Costumes were not really part of that context. They could potentially correlate, but it doesn't make them causation either. I wouldn't take the statement to mean any content as is. Especially when some content can literally be a preview for a game that isn't out yet(Shadow Moses Island had a Metal Gear Solid 4 preview content as a bit of a bonus). MGS being decently known on Nintendo is one thing, but the content itself is non-Nintendo, so it's not as simple. For a lot, Lloyd is pretty much the icon of Tales of(though there's no question Nintendo bias is a part of it. But see Banjo for a similar thing, plus, it did help get him in since that's the core reason for the huge fan demand).
I'm not denying that Lloyd is decently iconic in the Tales franchise, because he is. But what I'm saying is that Yuri is a bigger money maker (and more well known inside JP), and it makes more sense to include him in terms of sales. As a bonus point, Vesperia is actually on the Switch unlike Symphonia; meaning that there is a higher chance of cross promotion for both Namco and Nintendo.

I was actually wondering if there were any costumes/characters in Smash 4 that had 0 major appearances on a Nintendo console. Obviously Cloud not withstanding. As far as I recall all of them had a previous major appearance on a Nintendo system, but I may be mistaken on that note. If there weren't, then it may make sense why Sakurai did not give Yuri a costume in Smash 4.

If KOS-MOS does get in, then she will be entirely Sakurai's choice, as most likely Nintendo and Namco Bandai have no interest in her or her series.

I guess gameplay is one reason why I'd see Sakurai pick KOS-MOS, I still have my doubts over her since nothing really is pointing towards her besides a couple of fake leaks that were debunked.

Whatever makes the "smash players are scared of input commands" meme disappear
EX moves wouldn't necessarily be input commands. It'd be something like pressing A and B at the same time, as well as a direction depending on which special you wanted to EX. It'd still be pretty simple.

This would of course completely replace the "easy smash input" feature, but no one really uses that anyways.

EDIT: This made me realize EX Limit Breaks or EX Menu need to be considered too
I did consider those. Since the EX move mechanic is basically Cloud's limit break made universal for everybody, he wouldn't really change all that much. Down+B would probably do nothing once he was at full meter and only EX down+B would be finishing touch. However, you'd have two EX meter stocks, so in a way Cloud would be buffed from having it since he'd be able to perform two EX moves instead of one, but so would everyone else.

Hero's command menu would disappear, instead his EX moves would all be an enhanced special from the menu picked in a way that makes sense. Honestly though part of this design change would be giving all the veteran characters completely new techniques and making the game fresh once again.

Joker is a loose example. He was already determined on his own merits, being from P5, not from the spin-off 3DS game. But that's why it's loose, cause it's still a full game appearance.

Cloud's really the only example thusfar. Technically Luminary too, since that appearance wasn't till after he was added in. But that's the only costume that counts at best. The Nintendo appearance is not a key factor, true, but there's just a ton of characters who happen to already have appearances that were going to be chosen anyway because of their own merits. Basically as I said, correlation is not causation.

It doesn't inherently make sense to include Yuri for that alone. There's gotta be more to it than that. Sales isn't the point that Sakurai is inherently looking for. That's only often useful when determining when to bring a vet back, and it can sometimes help. Stuff like gameplay plays a way bigger role in comparison. Lloyd right now easily has the upper hand, but Yuri is easily a great choice because they're both major faces of the franchise. Pretty sure they couldn't be costumes of each other, though. That said, imo, what I think will happen is if one of them is playable, the other is a costume.

Yeah, in defense of KOS-MOS, she would have a vastly original moveset in contrast to Lloyd and Heihachi. I personally feel that we have plenty of "Classic" fighting characters (Ryu, Ken, Terry) and typical swordfighters (FE characters, Hero, Cloud, Metaknight, Link triplets, Shulk, etc.). She, on the other hand, could offer an original combination of both gunner AND swordfighter attributes combined with speed and agility. Plus, we could bring some much needed variance to our otherwise sausage fest DLC pack. Not to say we HAVE to have a female, but again, it adds variance.

KOS-MOS would also add more diversity in general. Lloyd and Heihachi are similar to Hero and Terry respectively in terms of feel (and perhaps audience as well) with the former being a high fantasy swordsman and the latter being a big muscley fighting man. KOS-MOS being a robotic character with guns would be much differant than those as well as Joker and Banjo & Kazooie.

I can't picture KOS-MOS for the life of me though. My brain keeps pulling up pictures of Nu. 13 instead.

Are we talking about the same characters? I haven't yet heard a line from Yu's mouth that wasn't about friendship, and Yosuke something that wasn't derpy. Though I suppose I just got the nutshell version of them from BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle so I dunno.

The one thing that I think we should remember with Lloyd is the fact that he’s arguably the most recognizable to gamers who don’t play Tales, but also the main protagonist of the game with the largest impact in the West. That’s a bigger deal than it seems, mainly because it’s a title in a Japanese series getting a foothold in the West.

There’s also the fact that Sakurai himself said of the Mii Costume for Tales, “Who else but Lloyd?” Now it’s not as though he can’t change his mind. I just don’t think it’s all that cut and dry.

This is assuming any Tales pick happens in the first place.

13 instead.
Tekken is a 3D Fighter so it's nothing like Street Fighter or King of Fighters.

Are we talking about the same characters? I haven't yet heard a line from Yu's mouth that wasn't about friendship, and Yosuke something that wasn't derpy. Though I suppose I just got the nutshell version of them from BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle so I dunno.
I'm joking about how P4 really **** the bed when it came to it's societal themes and how Yosuke, a character who was planned to be the gay romance option only for the part where he comes out and admits his behaivour was him struggling with his bisexuality to get cut, act homophobic with no real reason beyond being a ****

Yeah, I pretty much agree with you entirely. I'm just stating that personally I think Yuri has as good of a shot as Lloyd currently; but if Sakurai stated that post-pass is entirely fan-favorites, then I'd be inclined to believe that the only Tales option would be Lloyd.

However, I disagree with the statement that Yu is more popular then Joker; simply because I don't really think that it is true. Persona 5 is on a whole another league of popularity compared to Persona 4 in modern days, and there's nothing to suggest that Yu is more popular then Joker; especially inside of Japan. In regards to Alucard vs the Belmonts, the main protagonists of the overall Castlevania series are still the Belmonts; so it's not really the same thing. Besides that, I think the hardcore Castlevania fans still wanted the Belmonts in the most, comparatively to Alucard (who is still popular, especially outside the hardcore fanbase.) As a Persona fan, I'm pretty confident in Joker being more popular then Yu (He even appears in the Sega logo in the Sonic movie). However, I'm not hugely into Castlevania, so I may be wrong on that one.

Baboom utilizing DonChan as a weapon confirmed.

For Lloyd and Yuri, couldn't they just do a "One for Japan, one for America" type of deal like the Dragon Quest Heroes? Are Lloyd and Yuri that vastly different from each other that they couldn't be alts?

Cloud's really the only example thusfar. Technically Luminary too, since that appearance wasn't till after he was added in.
Dragon Quest 11 was on the 3DS too so he doesn't count.

If you really want to grasp for straws for Cloud, he appears in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and Re: Coded so there are no characters in Smash that truly do not appear on Nintendo consoles.

Yosuke was a bit of an ass early on in P4 but as you play the game more, Yosuke got so much better

They're way too different from each other to be alts. I'm not the biggest Tales expert but I can tell from looking at them that it's hard to implement a character with two swords and a character with one sword as alts to each other.
