Every time that I remember Microsoft owns B-K, it reminds me of how they just continue to hold onto the series, doing absolutely nothing with it. Like why did they even buy Rare anyway? It just feels like they did so they could say "look, we own these iconic characters!" and not much else.

Alright, a thank you to everyone who responded. Now for my bold prediction that is most certainly never gonna happen...

I think Fighter 5 is gonna come with an Echo Fighter.

To be honest, I don't know why I think this could happen... other than it being a curveball move I could see Sakurai pulling. Yup, the curveball isn't Fighter 5 themselves, rather, it's what they're coming with.

And I know, Sakurai has said that none of the characters in the Fighters Pass will be Echo Fighters, but if you'll allow me to interpret Sakurai's words... I think he specifically meant "no Fighter Pack will be dedicated solely to an Echo Fighter", i.e. Fighter 5 won't be an Echo Fighter themselves, but there's nothing stopping them from being a unique character who comes with his own Echo Fighter.

As for some examples of characters that could come with Echo Fighters...

• Phoenix Wright -> Apollo Justice
• Morrigan -> Lilith
• Viewtiful Joe -> Silvia
• Strider Hiryu -> Strider Hien
• Sora -> Roxas
• The Dragonborn -> The Nerevarine
• Akira Howard -> Maximilian Howard

Again, most certainly not happening, but a "tinfoil hat" part of me thinks it's at least possible.

These are all cool Pokemon, sure. But they haven't really had any significant marketing to make me think they would get in instead of a starter. Heck, more than half of those weren't even officially revealed before release.

What marketing did Greninja have when Sakurai chose him? Game Freak knows who they're going to promote, and while they kept a lot hidden from us, that doesn't mean the 20 something Pokemon that were revealed to us prior to SwSh's release are all they plan on promoting going forward.

Regardless, none of this should matter. If there's someone I want in Smash, I'll support them, regardless of whether or not me or the community thinks they have a chance. Sakurai could suprise me after all, and staying silent does nothing.

It'd probably be an inverse effect. You'd see Edelgard merch out of stock here in America but in abundance over in Japan, and vice versa with Dimitri. I imagine Claude and Byleth would be pretty consistently popular.

Do people really not understand why Edelgard is controversial in the east? Like, I figured it was obvious all things considered.

I find the idea of doing Byleth because teh other lords were waay to balanced in popularity terrible.

I'm all pro edelgard and i also love claude a lot. Dimitry is clearly my less favored lord, but i rather have him getting in over El and Claude than not having any lord because "people gonna get mad". And... i really hope that the argument of... we are doing this more neutral character because the other characters are waay too superior rather frustrating.

This is post is not against byleth. if Byleth is in, she is in, but let her be in by her own merits and not because literally "the other characters were too good to decide".

Yeah, you have to play the Tomas and Kronya routes before you can branch into the Alois route from the Pallardo route. Almost no one has beaten it.

i mean after seeing how hard the tomas route botches gwendal's character arc i can't blame people for not slogging through that bull****

9S is unarguably the main character of Nier Automata by almost every metric: amount of playtime, screentime, dialogue, character development, most of the key plot reveals happening in his routes, etc. The only thing 2B has in comparison is being the first character you control.

We all know the real reason why 2B is pushed everywhere instead of him.

That ain't it, chief. Route A is longer than B and C, especially if you factor in the sidequests that 2B can complete compared to both 9S and A2. Although her route reveals the least amount of info regarding Project Yorha, she drives the plot for the latter half of the game and is what results in Ending D; her memories are what cause them to spoiler. A2 carries out her wishes; 9S seeks revenge for her. She has the most screen time, and pretending to be stoic is why she doesn't speak much. We learn more about the machines and the true nature of Project Yorha from A2 and 9S, but 2B's relevant the entire game.

You know if Sakura Shinguji ends up being FP5 then I could see her coming with an Alph/Koopalings style alt of Sakura Amamiya from Shin Sakura Wars.

Would help familiarize her with new players as well as promote the new game.

If I had to guess, Microsoft owns Moang but they still function as a unit.
Rare has been digested so now the ownership goes straight to MS.

It’s interesting, because while this is a smaller sample size, I see her taking the longest to sell out in fan merch stores too. I also remember going to a decently sized con. Tons of Dimitri cosplayers. Quite a few claudes. Some Edelgard’s but the BL and GD groups were pretty big compared to BE, and this was all in ‘Murica.

I think it’s not only due to her controversial nature, but also just the fact that people in the FE Fanbase want more merch and just more focus on the male characters. Most of the fe merch is of the girls only so Edel getting a head start marketing wise was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Really? I know I don't agree with Edelgard one bit, but I'm surprised to see the fanbase generally against her. Or at the very least, more supportive of the other lords. Granted, Edelgard gets like four less chapters than the other routes.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Sakurai choose Gren from seeing his concept art IIRC, and he wasn't even officially revealed before release. Sure, he had a big presence in the anime but that wasn't until after he was in smash I believe.

Also, I don't want to discourage you from supporting whoever who want, supporting and discussing your most wanted's is part of the fun of the smash community.

I was basically saying why I wasn't discussing any potential SwSh reps, and possibly others as well because as we can see, the starters aren't very popular with people and the others not having a big marketing presence possibly means that they're not on people's minds that often.

Well soras was kinda recent and they flat out said he wasn’t planned. Microsoft only said that they would love to have banjo in smash in during smash 4. And they restated it after smash 5’s reveal

not to start fire emblem disk horse in the speculation thread but it's probably due to the different ways the west and the east view the idea of conquering

i remember seeing this one tweet about why edie is so damn unpopular in korea and it mostly boils down to not liking her trying to unite fodlan by force, which, i mean. pretty obvious why they have a problem with it

ofc it's a lot more nuanced than that and not every asian country is korea but it's interesting to see how people can have such divided opinions on a fictional character simply due to where they grew up

I'm thinking Mojang could possibly slide in with the other copyrights on the "Press Start!" screen despite Rare being unable to; Microsoft seems to just let Mojang do their own thing, even as far as development and stuff so they're very lenient.

However, despite all that, I'm sure Microsoft 100% owns them (they paid 2.5 billion dollars for them and Minecraft), so *shrug*.

I think Apollo makes more sense since it's easier to animate a character with a similar personality.

The lack of info from leakers makes me think that fighter #5 might be from Square Enix. Those guys are good at keeping secrets - especially when firing employers who talk too much is a thing.

I'm pretty sure saying no is also a violation of an NDA as well.

What Grant pretty much said was "Maybe but I doubt it" which is a vague statement to not violate an NDA. And he doesn't have any legal ties to Microsoft as well. Unlike the statement's regarding Travis, Master Chief, and Sora which were an explicit "no" form people with close ties to their series.
