I don't hate him, I just don't like him. He's basically the source of the broadsword hero cliche. It's why I don't like Sephiroth either, he's the source of quite a few cliches himself.

=P This is also why I never want to see a puppeteer character in SSB, that cliche has rooted in WAY too many games.

Assist Trophies?

Balloon Fighters should appear as 2D sprites. They fly around the stage getting in your way. If you wanted to shoot or throw a projectile at an opponent but a Balloon Fighter gets in the way, that sprite gets it instead of your opponent.

Cuccos. The chickens from the Zelda series. Summon one and it will fly off screen and bring a flock of flying chickens to peck everyone. It would be like Beedrill in SSB64, Unown in Melee, and Centurions in Brawl (Pit's Final Smash)... watch out for the blue Cucco (Cojiro from Ocarina of Time)... that one delivers an one-hit KO.

How about the purple Pikmin with mushrooms instead of flowers? They were in the original Pikmin. They grow out from the ground and attack everyone, including the one who summoned them, in the same way Olimar's Pikmin does in Brawl.

Oh, yeah... Eggplant Wizard should be an Assist Trophy. It is so easy to figure out what he would do. He would just throw eggplants around and if a character gets hit, they are turned into walking eggplants for a few seconds.

I think Nintendogs should include cats as well. You would have a puppy and a kitten on the screen at the same time. It would be cute if the kitten was based on Sakurai's cat.

Here's something unexpected... Aquamentus! This dragon is usually the first boss you will face in the original NES Zelda... but in SSB4, he appears in his Game & Watch incarnation! The dragon flies around and breathes LCD fireballs in 2D.

Obscure in present awareness. We are well past the GBA generation and unless one of the developers have a cartridge lying around it isn't likely they are going to run across it.

Cloud does play some important roles in KH though...it's kind of hard not notice KH when they constantly keep putting these "filler" type games for it out.

But maybe there is some truth to what you say, iirc Cloud only appears in KH games focusing on Sora.

I'd really like some feedback on this. I tried to expand franchises that needed expanding, as well as adding newer relevant ones. I could get to 43 (48 including transformations) characters comfortably, but beyond that it's tough to decide.

Quick run-down:
Ridley: Inarguable.
Samurai Goroh: Throw F-Zero a bone.
Little Mac: He's always been popular, he was an Assist Trophy in Brawl, and with his recent Wii game he's been pushed back in to relevance. I'm sure anyone would be surprised if he wasn't included.
Lyn/New FE character: Really, I doubt Lyn will get in. FE will surely get another game in 3+ years, so we'll probably be seeing a new lord in Sm4sh. Marth and Ike aren't going anywhere, by the way.
Isaac/Matthew: Golden Sun seems to be a nice little growing franchise to add to Smash. Isaac's appearance as an Assist Trophy makes a Golden Sun rep in Sm4sh all the more likely in my eyes. It would probably be Matthew who makes it , though, to shine a light on the newest game.
Saki/Isa: Same situation as Isaac/Matthew, pretty much. Isa Amamiya may make it instead, again to shine a light on the newest game.
EDIT: Eff. Forgot Zoroark: Pokemon is really hard to decide on now. Pikachu and Jiggs aren't going anywhere. Sakurai wouldn't throw away someone as unique as Pokemon Trainer either. Maybe change up their Pokemon? Who knows. Assuming he doesn't change Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon, Zoroark would likely be there to represent the 5th gen, as Lucario was there to represent the 4th. I hate seeing the Mewtwo/Lucario moveset go, but fitting in all these Pokemon without going overboard is so difficult. :/
Takamaru: I was around back in the pre-Brawl days, and I remember Takamaru having a little following. With the arguments I'm seeing now though, personally I'm convinced that he has a really good chance this time. Not to go off on too much of a tangent here, but y'know what really makes me want him? His stage. Can you imagine fighting on some Japanese castle with a beautiful landscape behind it? Pink sakura leaves blowing in the wind. Gorgeous. Then suddenly lightning strikes and everything goes dark as the land turns nightmarish while demons invade. Yes. Yes.

Those are the only ones I'm comfortable listing. Sukapon and the Masked Man are, honestly, just my own hopefuls. Ray Mk. III, while I'm sure he could be cool, I just don't see Custom Robo being all that relevant anymore. He didn't make it in Brawl, and a new game hasn't been released since then. I dunno. Maybe I'm not thinking clearly about this.

As for third-party characters. I really hope Snake doesn't get the boot. Surely Kojima wouldn't want to see him go either...? (andimeanhehassomuchmorepersonalitythanSONIC: I guess he'll continue being as popular as ever. What with the Olympic series, I don't see him going either. Megaman is really the only new third-party character I see getting in. Definitely the most in demand and was kind of a big deal back in the NES and SNES days. If we're lucky, Capcom might give us Ryu. Street Fighter is in butt buddies with everyone these days anyway.

I would like to mention Medusa. I'd want her in if only to have another villain, as well as another woman. Unfortunately I worry that Sakurai's own humility would prevent her from getting in...

Also, just so any fans know, I had a lot of trouble deleting Paper Mario from my list.

No. It's not a given. We have no idea. The SSE isn't exactly something that can have a sequel. It tied up its own ends. And honestly, I hope they don't so they can focus on more important things.

(Y'know what his Final Smash should be? He should hop on this stage that just appears out of nowhere, and tell jokes to make each opponent laugh. Maybe he could even have character specific jokes about each character. Each opponent would go into a helpless laughing animation giving Sukapon a free hit. GOODNESS i just love Sukapon~)

If we are going to talk about Phoenix Wright, then I'd say he should be an Assist Trophy. The reason being that Phoenix Wright is a lawyer, not a fighter. I think the best function would be when the character summons him, he will stand around for about 20 seconds and if someone attacks that character, it will be an "Objection!" counterattack. That's my thoughts. There are good reasons why Phoenix Wright didn't appear as a playable character in MvC3.

I think some characters form Brawl can return, but as Assist Trophy because they really don't serve a lot of significance or doesn't really have much of a significant fanbase or fan support (Mr. Game and Watch, ROB, Ice Climbers, Lucas, etc.). For the Pokeball, if Lucario were to return, it would make more sense to have him there. Since we're in Generation V in Pokemon, Zoroark would be the most ideal playable Pokemon to debut (since he's mostly based out Lucario and also Mewtwo, the two Pokemon furries). Unless, of course, if Sakurai decides to put both Lucario and Zoroark as playable characters, then that would be insane.

See, for me, I liked SSE. Yeah, it was too short, the story was vague at best, but it was also AWESOME. I mean, just how cool it was, seeing the characters interact against a common threat. Parts of it were some of the most fun I'd ever had in a nintendo game, mainly because of the good production value it had. Just mindless fun.

Agree that it tied up most of it's ends, though. If they do make another one, it'll have to be a a different villain. Crazy Hand never showed up in SSE, and since SSE seemed to imply Master Hand is more of a benevolent god-figure that had been taken over by Tabuu, maybe having Crazy Hand be the "devil" to the Master Hand's "god" would make some sense (well, as much sense as SSB can have).

I think they forfeit balance when they start getting to and over 60 characters. By the time they hit 100, balance is no longer even a myth. Beyond 150, it is not in the dictionaries of any language.

If I had to pick... Megaman, ONE Phantom Brave, ONE Disgaea, and Amaterasu. That's 4, which is pretty optimistic, especially if we keep Snake and Sonic.
