Melee introduced 14 characters.

Brawl introduced 18 - 5(technically 4) newcomers.

And expecting 9 characters cut is just plain stupid.

I'm sorry, but in reality, it is. Nowhere near that many will be cut IF ANY AT ALL. Time restraints will be a character's undoing. Even then, the WiiU is supposed to have DLC, so if it doesn't get finished(say ROB was cut because of time), the team could still work on and release said cut character.

Sorry to bring this up but... isn't that what Diddy's Impa argument is about? He's saying that Zelda and Sheik should be separate but Sheik shouldn't have her own slot so update Sheik with Impa's appearance and name. In other words, we would be playing as Impa but we are still playing with Sheik's moveset (plus a new Down B).

Not the same deal.
Young Link and Toon Link are both younger incarnations of the character "Link".
Essentially the labels "Young" and "Toon" are only there to determine which incarnation it is.

Impa is not Sheik nor is she Zelda.

No because Impa and Sheik are legitimately two different characters. Toon Link is definitely a "young" version of Link. Its like saying that since Twilight Princess Link replaced Ocarina of Time Link that Twilight Princess Link is a newcomer. Toon Link technically counts as a newcomer due to the name change, but he is still the younger, quicker, lighter version of Link that Young Link was.

Toon Link and Young Link may be "young" versions of Link but they are legitimately two different characters. The same argument can be applied to Impa and Sheik. Impa and Sheik are legitimately two different characters but they are both Sheikah. Impa is a logical character to replace/update Sheik just like Toon Link was a logical character to replace/update Young Link.

will they have the time to finish all the character modelling and balancing ? He might do like Marvel vs Capcom 3 and focus on balance and only replace some characters and will increase the roster by 6 characters.

Impa is a geninue Sheikah who taught Sheik all about the Sheikah fighting style. Sheik is a fake Sheikah who learned the Sheikah fighting style from Impa. But they are still Sheikah who know the Sheikah fighting style.

"Toon" Link was also in Spirit Tracks, and the Toon style for Link was also used in Four Swords, Four Swords Adventures, and Minish Cap. Those were all different Links yet they were all "Toon" Link.
