Chrono and Arcade know a lot about Pre-Melee as well.

I recall Poo being the "Melee Geno" or whatever, Donkey Kong Junior being a sort of "If Diddy can't be used" type of character. Heracross was the 2nd Gen character (Why? I know why, but still, so lame), annnnnnnnnnnnnd I think Ganondorf was one of the most requested characters, and people were pissed at how he turned out.

There is a lot more than that, but I'm so freaking tired. Oh, Wario. People liked him.
Yep you remembered correctly.

Also, Donkey Kong Junior was not popular pre-Melee, so much as there were some people that thought Diddy Kong was owned by Rare, and thus DKJR. would be next in line since all the characters designed by Rare would be off limits.

The biggest reason for this way of thinking I think was actually Mario Tennis 64, and perhaps the complications going on with Rare at the time.

I remember seeing more requests for Mewtwo and Meowth than any 2nd-generation Pokemon (of which the one I saw with the most requests was Heracross). However, people seemed to think that a 2nd-generation Pokemon was more likely than a first-gen one. I think Charizard's bandwagon was taken out of commission early one due an update on the Japanese Melee site in July.

Starphoenix, who where popular characters pre-Melee?
I think Chrono pretty much summarized all of the characters that were popular at that period. Like I said previously after Melee the character people seemed the most disappointed not seeing in the game was MetaKnight and possibly Ridley.

Very true. One of the things I've tried (but I'm sure I fall into the trap of doing to) is doing the conventional wisdom. We make up silly requirements and why X will get in and I'm sure the character threads didn't help.
Yes that is why I try to take a step back and not fall into those pot holes. It also explains why I rail so vehemently against certain ideals people hinge their criteria upon (such as sales).

GoldenY missing the point again... Anyways, thanks for posting. See we got most of the big names in as well in Melee. And yes, that Melee intro movie was hugely misleading.

But seriously though, Melee needed Wario, Diddy and Meta Knight / King DeDeDe I feel.

And as said before, I think the list might be completed this time seeing as how much fan demand brought in for Brawl.

Funny thing: all extremely popular newcomers in Brawl where also extremely good. Most noticable ones being Meta Knight, Diddy, Wario, DeDeDe and Lucario.

What was this thing about Charizard pre-Melee though?

Arguments don't belong in this thread, at least the ones I have seen. It's fine to have a different opinion than someone, but a lot of the time I am finding it is taken way too far and insults, curses, whatever is fairly common. I usually just plea that people take it out of the thread. I don't care if people fight, they just need to take it to either PM's, or not do it at all. Letting it fizz out and let it run it's course doesn't really solve the problem in my opinion, it just gives off the impression that people are allowed to fight with one another and use insults as they please. If it doesn't end soon though, there very well may need to be some adjustments to who has access to this thread and who doesn't.

I do that for the sake of the thread's topic, apparently some things need to be said though.
Thank you for the response. I can respect your opinion. It's the problem here is, arguments do belong in this thread. I mean we do all the time, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and Waluigi/etc. See I've taken this argument to this level because well, I see people at each other's throat about an avatar in a gaming console. Anyways, some, not everyone because not everyone is the problem, I won't be foul either name names because I could do so.

That is all.

Charizard was always a popular choice for Smash Bros. However, for pre-Melee he never really got to have a much of a fanbase after Melee's announcement due to Charizard being deconfirmed early on as a Pokeball Pokemon.

I've heard that Toad grew popular because of an image where Peach used the Toad shield prior to everyone knowing that was one of her attacks. Is this true?

Fire Emblem is all Roy vs Chrome now, and where Ike fits in. And wether we get 4 Lords or not.

Personally, I'd like to see King Chaineghis... :O Who doesn't like man-lions? Not likely in the slighest. But lions are cool.

With that said, I always wanted an actual lion Pokémon. A fire starter would be awesome. I already got my fire monkey, but a fire lion would really rock.

Lol, figures. I try to drop some knowledge in this thread and my post is granted nothing more than a few passing glances. Why do I even bother

*opens up bottle of whiskey*

Anyway, Heracross was a popular 2nd gen choice? Wow, didn't know that

I don't remember that. Anyway, the Mario newcomer everyone wanted after Melee's unveil was Wario. No one else came close to him.

Toad is pretty much now at his peak of popularity (relative to other Mario characters).

Yeah, Charizard as a character was also brought up on the Melee dojo.

On as side note though, Bulbasaur and Ash I believe were on the Melee poll. I'm starting to think that's where the idea for PT came from.

Heracross was definitely a good choice for Smash as is. Fighting/Bug, already had tons of possible move choices, I'm sure the Anime helped that a bit. A pretty good type combination in Pokemon itself.

I'd take Heracross over Jigglypuff and Pichu. He would just seem a little odd.

Toad is the best since he isn't another Bowser or another overalls.

Red is such an attention-seeker's font color.

Just because there was no response does not mean it went unnoticed. Yes Heracross has remained one of the most popular Pokémon out of the second generation. Why? I don't know.

Red is such an attention-seeker's font color.
Ugh, it is a hard to read font. Usually I pass over people who use that color.

So Toad is now what Wario was pre-Brawl, correct?
No. Wario was in a league of his own pre-Melee, not other Mario character came close to him.

By comparison, while Toad is the most wanted Mario character now, Paper Mario, Bowser Jr., Geno, and Waluigi all have many who want them too.

I think it's high time I started posting actively in here. I've been on these boards over 4 years and used to post all the time. This thread's constant..stuff makes me want to post things. So hey!

First off, I love the Palutena moveset up there (or was it a few pages back?), and she just gained another supporter because of it. (That, and the incredibly likelihood that she'll be playable. Enormous.)

I wasn't around in the pre-Melee days, since Melee came out when I was in 5th grade. But some choices, and the pre-Brawl days, I remember all too well. (Even the drama, like the Kuma-Smashchu debates. Great to see things haven't changed  )

I also REALLY hope we get a trailer. If we had a trailer, a name, and an active character discussion forum, this would be a whole lot cleaner. Obviously.

@asage94: I like your move, but it's not perfect. Too much emphasis on fire and not enough on Victini's Psychic ability, not to mention that Flame Charge needs to be made more original.

Nowadays, if a 2nd Gen is to be added other than Pichu, it seems it would be either Heracross or Scizor.

I wasn't clear about what I meant. Arguments about characters and such belong, sure. Arguments about people just generally flaming one another, calling whatever they say stupid (or the actual poster stupid), and making this whole series of off-topic, 1v1 flame-wars don't belong. Debates about... anything honestly can get heated, and people can be a bit harsh in what they say sometimes. That's fine, as long as they at least keep it on an appropriate level, there's no need for insults basically.

Once we have a trailer and a separate board things will begin to level out. For now it is like having a large family in one, cramped apartment. Making it uncomfortable and leading to a lot of tension.

I would kinda like Snorlax as a semi-Jigglypuff clone. Big heavy tank, with Rest being a healing move (down B). Would be very unique to have if they want to beef up Pokemon somehow, or have insanely many DCL characters.

Nice to meet ya.

And thanks for the compliment, it's nice to see my moveset idea paid off, although in a way I didn't really expect. :awesome:

If we get a 2nd gen rep, I'm hoping it has Scizor in it

Who honestly would NOT enjoy having some sick Mewtwo vs Scizor battles? :shades:

Sadly, it'll never happen, most likely :urg:

Have you done a Medusa moveset as well ---? I would kinda like to see one, as I think I might be wanting her more than Palutena for her being a villain. And, the mythological creature Medusa could turn people to stone if I recall. Would be cool to have around in the cast.

Nice to meet you, Gannon-Banned-dorf4ever. But seriously, nice to meet you, man.

Oh, some of my other movesets were Knuckles, Rouge, Grounder, Psycho Red, and Deviot(last two I'm not going to bother posting due to originating in TV Shows).
