ive lurked here for a while, so say what you will about my inexperience/being new. it seems this forum is the most defining and central point of communication for the community, yet it is still owned my mlg, receives no updates, appears cluttered/disorganized making it sometimes hard to find the right info, isnt the most friendly to new users, and the whole lets keep it pg/e/clean deal simply doesnt fit the community's style. i mean who actually wanted mango banned? smashers are all kind of trolling jack@sses on the inside, we all love fun and jack@ssery is an integral part of both fun and melee. theres no reason to deny our nature. we also need to find a way to get this forum on the front page when you google the words "super smash brothers melee." it took me like 2 days of trying to find info on competitive melee before i ended up here the first time. id propose we create a new forum, geared more towards bringing in new members/hyping tournaments to energize this community. we need to bring in some casuals and convert them by making it easy for them to learn the game and have very easy access to information about game mechanics/at's/basics of their character. i honestly think this game is good enough to sell itself to them so long as they dont get discouraged right from the start. the more casuals/semi-casuals we can get, the less theyll be forced to get destroyed by veterans, and the more they will enjoy the early learning stage of playing the game. i myself have mainly played as long as i have because i had a friend learning with me. we forced one another to become better, little by little. i doubt id have stuck with the game if id been on a schedule of practicing for a a few weeks only to get chain grabbed out of 10 dollars at monthlies over and over. we have a strong dedicated group of players, as evidenced by the turnout at recent nationals/internationals, but our local scenes arent doing as great, i feel due to the high learning curve coupled with a lack of similarity between smash and other fighting games. this puts us in a bad spot, seeing as many people who consider taking up the game are either brawl players who dont like the learning curve, or other competitive gamers who will often overlook melee as an outlier. hell, they may even be turned off simply by the lack of activity on this forum. all that aside, WE SHOULD HAVE OUR OWN FORUM, SEPARATE FROM 64 AND (ESPECIALLY) BRAWL. melee is the standout and most competitive of the 3 imo, we dont need to be associated with dair/ledge camping mks. just some thoughts, but id really like to see this game/community thrive. what do you guys think?

tl;dr - i think its time for the community to make some changes, most notably concerning this forum (being the most common form of communication for players) so that we might have better control (mods, mlg) over our scene and bring in new players to create more hype/fun for everybody. looking for thoughts/responses on this.

I believe it's a priority for the Back Room to put together a central Melee information repository. I'm not sure if a new forum would be included in this. Sadly, I can't see a new forum working out, because some people would choose to migrate and others wouldn't, effectively splitting the community in two. However, I do agree that the boards could be better organized.

FB groups are great, the noobs still need to break out of their shell and get active though, 90% of activity comes from the ranked players (at least in norcal).

FB groups are even worse for the long term status of the community though. When Billy sees Wombo Combo and wants to learn what the **** just happened, he's going to google "Melee tricks" or something along those lines, and a FB group from a local region near him won't be at the top of the list. I don't think switching websites would ever work either though. SmashBoards is a good base to work off of, but someone with the spare time and motivation will have to step up to get the work done.

Whether it's trash or not, Smashboards is too old and too established for a new forum to stand a good chance at gaining traction.

I agree with what the topic creator and Bones have said. Despite there being little chance of a new site becoming the standard, if someone legit were to try and start one up I'd give it a shot.

New forum would just split the community, we need a melee dic. reform. Info needs to be more easily accessible...I still think someone should make some basic tech skill vids that aren't out of date and go in depth.
For example, imagine your a new player who knows nothing and found his way to melee disc. Now try to find information on how to shffl and as a player who knows what to do critique the info you find. Becuase the only sticky with any info in the first post is the FAQ thread and the info is pretty poor for new players.

I honestly wish we could just move all of melee discussion onto reddit.

I've already been cybersquatting on /r/melee for us.

ya i think reddit could be a great catalyst for bringing in new players, the demographic of reddit fits with melee really well. maybe a new forum wouldve been a bit much, i agree we would have some amount of division as well. i guess i more or less intended this as a thread for how to improve the community as a whole. a place to discuss ideas about bringing in new players and improving how we go about things as a whole. I really think we should consider getting smashboards back from mlg because to my knowledge, and i dont know at all really, we have no way of updating the site without that. again im not sure if this is true, or what that would entail, but its probably worth looking into. i think every character should have a compounded list of guides stickied (pretty sure some of them do), same with frame data. itd be cool if we directed new members not sure about who to main to a thread or article specifically designated for that (i see new member ask about who to main from time to time), because new players may not understand their character's metagame and get discouraged when they find out their character, at tournament level play, doesnt excel at doing what they think their character does. for instance, i used to want to play peach because i honestly saw her as an offensive character. i was able to use floats/turnips to approach effectively against people i had played to that point, and was able to combo much better than i could with marth or falco at the time.

tl;dr - we should use reddit for hype, see about getting sb back from mlg, compound all guides for each character, along with frame data. go out of our way to help newbies pick a main. peach is gay.

Smashboards is pretty bad these days, but a lot of it is a combination of:

A) Brawl
B) MLG (they suck)

with the last part of it being
C) Certain members of the staff that really shouldn't be there, who treat the forum like their playground and it suffers because of it.

So most of it isn't its fault. Sad times.

I considered this, but I feel the upvote/downvote system would not work as well for valid discussion. I imagine stupid jokes being voted to the top, etc. Furthermore, most people wouldn't sort by "new", so newer comments wouldn't get as much attention.

I would advocate Google Groups as the best option, but I think customization is limited there. I'm sure there are a whole bunch of "modern" discussion board webapps out there that can simply be installed to a server, ones leagues better than the garbage that is phpBB, vBulletin, etc.

Man, my posting style is perfect for an up-voting system. Maybe I should try posting on Reddit. lol

But yeah, it would definitely suck because anyone who goes against the status quo even a little in serious discussions just gets neg-repped up the ***.

idk, from my experience lurking and posting on the boards id say that its alot of midlevel players, kk, kage, and a few other frequently posting top level playeres.
the problem is the following

a. most people dont know how to block leffen

b. alot of people just lurk, and dont post

c. alot of pros stay confined to their own character board, lessening the overall knowledge base.

edit: also, @bones. half the time i get ignored because of my join date and main, but at least people respond to you alot.

EDITEDIT: reddit is full of well meaning casuals who dont better than to say roy and kirby are good. i like smashboards isolated postition personally

I doubt it would do much good to make a seperate Melee forum. Most people would stick around here, rather than go there. You know?

Also, Alex Strife's post.

There is no point in seperating melee.

Look at 8wayrun.com and see how their forums are...we need that.

8wayrun is bautiful but personally I would have trouble making the switch to that type of layout.

EDIT: That doesn't mean I'm against it though. It's a very organised layout.

Dude if Google groups had a melee board I would be happy. I like google groups.

UsurperKingZant is/was a Brawl ******. But at least he seems to have dropped that game for Street Fighter lately. I like how he deleted almost everything he recorded of Brawl except the Apex videos it seems
