there's no real way to explain that other than edgehog physics + right side of FD physics (left side has different properties that mightn't allow for this to happen). might even have to do with when TL got up from the edge, or the direction being held by ness.

Nah, I feel this can be done on purpose. Just like how you can make Ness bounce on purpose. This should be tested for sure. You actually did something similar to this when we fought. Ban his Ness! Timmy breaking the laws of Ness psychics since 2014~

Ehhhh if I knew how to do it intentionally, that would be a godsend, but this was online (and my connection with my friend in that video was fairly bad, it was the replay I recorded, not the live match lol), so I'm not gonna really gonna look into it. :p

I don't think I was holding down on the control stick though.

usually to bounce from the ledge you have to hold down. sometimes you can make a "V" shape by going down-diagonally into the ledge and bouncing back up.
still, to curve like that, it's like the game thought you were on the left side of the stage, and curled you around the ledge.

GYK as much as I appreciate your kind words about my Ness... That's quite a bold statement. =P

Although really I guess all I can say is that I'm the youngest Ness main? xD

Oh and for the record I've been in a Brawling mood (online) so I got more friendlies~
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZlYZ25rTWs
^Versus a Yoshi Main and a good friend of mine, 7 matches.

Also either next week or in March monthlies in my area will begin and I'll most likely be able to attend them. Gonna bring my SD Card and record more offline friendlies!!! :)

Going to a tournament tomorrow!! Gonna meet up with Kels and my other fellow Smashers again. ;)

http://www.twitch.tv/clashtournaments
^Gonna be streamed on here, starting at about 10 AM EST. I'm not sure about the whole stream schedule though, it'll more likely be Melee/P:M stuff. =P

Wish me luck though!! Ness and I are in this together! :D

sooo, I wanna join the Ness-ers...

Hi, I'm GanonMaster, and I'm a fairly new Competetive player. I didn't take this game seriously until january 2014, so noob would be a fitting word for me :p I've tried some characters, but noone is as fun as Ness! That is why I've decided to become a top national player (in Norway) with Ness. I may start posting videos of my Ness on the videothread when I get the opportunity, so it would be helpfull if you commented on them c:

The Ness threads doesn't look very active atm, so if anyone feel the same burning passion about ness as I do, please be an active f***er!

Any advanced techs I should look at? I've seached for a bit on youtube, but I do not really find a lot...

Welcome! It's always good to see another Ness main. :)

Although we aren't exactly active... Plus this'll most likely be the last year for Brawl. =P
But we are willing to help out with your Ness and critiquing them. :D

Hm, I wouldn't exactly say these are advanced techniques (or even Ness specific), but you should have control of him (especially with PKT). It's simple, but quite forgotten. Simply put, try to outsmart your opponent and use mindgames!
Some things you should be using though are the PK Fire lag cancel, and the PSI Magnet Lag cancel.

PK Fire Lag Cancel: Now, try doing a PK Fire in mid-air RIGHT as you full hop. Normally you'll land and lag a lot. But, there is a point where you can cancel Ness' fall into an airdodge, aerial, special (though this is rather counterproductive so it's not recommended lol), or a double jump. This prevents the landing lag of PK Fire. (Note that it's not JUST for Full hopped PK Fires; I believe this also works at the height of both of Ness' jumps combined and starts to fall). Very useful to reduce the chance of being punished. :)

PSI Magnet Lag Cancel: When you absorb a projectile with the PSI Magnet, you sort of lag, but that lag acts as if you put up your shield (if absorbed on the ground). When you absorb something, you can immediately roll (flick either left or right; the direction you want to roll), sidestep (flick down) or Jump (hit up; or if you have Tap Jump off, you'll need to use the Jump button). It (obviously) lowers unnecessary lag, which is always good so that it reduces your chances of being punished. :)

^Hope this helps! :D

Welcome to the Ness boards!

Indeed, we're less active than we might otherwise or used to have been but that doesn't mean we have no presence. Our best player still goes to tournaments regularly and reps Ness to a rather incredible level (Shaky) and the rest of us drop in and out. I'm an Australian player with a decent amount of experience, so feel free to ask anything you like and chuck in anything here that you may like! ^_^

In terms of advanced stuff with Ness, you'll want to start (and this applies to any character) by getting a basis for your playstyle as him. Everybody has different playstyles (some are very similar though *coughcoughmybrotherandIprettymuchdothesamelucasstrategycoughcough*) that often involve bits and pieces of each other. For instance, my Ness playstyle involves a very space-oriented game with punishing as my main goal. You'll get the meaning of it all later but basically what I like to do is space short-hop Fairs so that it's very difficult to punish. If I can I prefer to use aerials (I personally believe Ness shines in the air, though as Yoshi likes to point out, Ness' yoyo has some AMAZING uses and can be really handy, for instance edge-guarding) or if i'm on the ground, Ness' running grab is very, very good and so is his pivot in terms of frames, start up, cool down, range, etc.

There's a lot of stuff I do, most of what's on youtube of me is really old but i'm going to a tournament soon and hopefully i'll gets some matches recorded so i'll refer you to any I get when I get em. Really easy place to start is Shaky. Look up vids of his tournament play on youtube and you'll find heaps and quite a lot of it is recent too. He's also an incredible doubles player so look at that as well if you're thinking about 2v2.

In any case, feel free to ask any questions about anything (they can be as basic as you like - honestly, I was totally clueless about any and all of the competitive jargon when I first came to the boards for the first several months so...) and check vids and socialise here and whatnot.

Hey Yoshi, I think you should delve into some of your yoyo stuff, seeing as it's definitely your area. I can think of a few techniques with it (having it dangle over the edge of the stage for instance) but you'd have all the potential uses. ;)

thanks for being nice and welcomming, I did not know about PSI magnet cancel, and this will help me a lot! (A local Pikachu use my lag to upsmash me :/) I have to try tthe PKF stuff to, but I usually hit them. I can punish harder without lag so that will be cool :)

I try to look at a lot of Shakyvideos for inspiration, and some lesser known Ness players such as Susi. Especially Shaaky's mindgames are amazing, and his 2v2 skills are some of the best in the world imo.

about the Brawlcomunity dying, I'm not sure anymore. I startet playing smash in January, both melee and Brawl. I had melee as my main game since I thought Brawl would be dying, but after meating up with the community, I'm not sure anymore. If smash 4 is so good that there is no need for Brawl, yes it will die. But if Smash 4 is its own thing, I think the Brawl still have some years to come!

I don't personally believe Brawl will die when smash 4 comes out, I think it's given too much to too many players (i'm one of those people). It might become significantly smaller but I don't believe it will die by any means. :)

There is literally no reason to play Brawl competitively anymore once Smash 4 comes out, and on top of it, almost the entire scene for the game is dead already because everyone is currently sick and tired of Brawl and waiting for Smash 4.

I find Yo-Yos can work well on Pokemon Stadium 1 at the windmill... ;)

Go to 5:29. Helped me make a comeback! ;P

They can also be useful to stop your opponents from landing if you read their movements correctly. Either the D-Smash or U-Smash is fine, but try to choose accordingly.
There's also just spamming U-Smash over and over to cover their landings by following them... XD
Go to 2:53 - 3:00.

But that's just not true. Maybe you are but there's still plenty of top and lower-level players alike that are still really compassionate about the game. To say they're not is just.... wrong. Either they'd stop playing competitively and wait for smash 4 or they'd switch to other games. But surprise surprise, large-scale tournaments are just as big as usual with no less commitment from the players that attend those tournaments. I also don't really understand your sentence because melee. Even if melee is different from Brawl, I don't expect you to argue that smash 4 will just be a better Brawl because as it so happens, that's what melee players thought of Brawl when it was shown and up until its release they thought it would be everything they wanted and it was entirely different from melee. Also there's plenty different already about smash 4 to brawl and not all of it is 'better' or 'worse'. Besides, even if that were the case, there are plenty of examples where communities exist for games that aren't quite as good (in certain areas at the very least) as their successor (Starcraft is an example here iirc).

Why do we argue so much gashi? :/

lol I dont even want to argue this, but I guarantee you, by mid March of 2015 (since Smash 4 on Wii U coming out Winter means most likely the Holiday season, so Im giving roughly 3 months), the Brawl scene will be even smaller then 64's scene and will only even be played in the occasional low entry side tournament at big tournaments. Im willing to bet on this. Unless Smash 4 sucks, Brawl is done.

You say that, yet you continue to argue with everything I say...

The point is, you haven't even really said anything by this because I said myself that it'd get smaller. But with as many high-top level players as we do, I can't see it as dying outright. And neither of us have the experience to know what happened to 64 as soon as melee came out. We just know that by Brawl 64 got really, really small.

Go ahead and bet on it but I don't see what or why it matters. I simply believe it won't get that small and you do.

I do actually know what happened with 64, you do know I had an account on this site for years (think I made it in mid 05? I forgot the password and didnt like the username so made a new account) before this one right? And I also went to events before I ever even had an account to begin with? But I wasnt talking about it slowly going down like 64, I more meant it would almost immediately get as small as 64 is currently. And the reason I think Brawl will fall as hard and fast as I do, is that the VERY large majority of current Brawl players want something new, theyre tired of the stale meta that Brawl currently has, and another big reason, none of the power regions (NY/NJ, SoCal, Texas, etc) are going to keep playing Brawl. Literally none at all. All of the big regions are going to effectively drop it after a month or two of keeping Brawl as a side event. None of the big name Brawl players like Brawl's meta, they want something new and fresh, very few are going to stick with Brawl.

I honestly dont see what redeeming factors you see in Brawl that could possibly attract players to want to play Brawl over Smash 4; Brawl is super slow, super stale, and dominated by 2 characters that are really stupid at top level.

Alright, I just wasn't so pessimistic that everyone would go ahead and drop a game after 6 years because new game.

That's like, 1/15 of your life spent doing something and then dropping it. I don't get it. Why wouldn't everyone who's so tired of the meta just drop the game now and do something else?

The only reason I loved Brawl was because of Lucas, and now P:M has a better version of him (although no dair -> dtilt locks which were very fun to pull off).
So if Lucas isn't in Smash 4 I'm still switching games to P:M and Smash 4. That's not to say I'll still attend a Brawl tournament (if there is one), just as I attend Melee and 64 tournaments.

Okay.

@ Jamwa Jamwa : I love Brawl because it brought me into the competitive community and allowed me to look deeper into VG mechanics. I also never played Melee, so P:M had no bearing on me because I never felt attached to the game nor its mechanics. Ergo, I never saw why anyone would ever go ahead and drop the game. How silly of me, so i'm told.
