There's a chance I might miss this :/ Brother's graduating from pharmacy school and going to UNC for rotations and he's having some party I gotta go to on the 6th and more stuff the 7th. Lame.

But if M2K wants to come to nebraska afterwards like I've been hearing Rumors of, that'd be sick as hell.

I'm a terrible member of my family so I have no problem skipping out on the Saturday festivities, and it may actually allow for more of Nebraska to come...but yeah, idk, we'll see.

If you finish that project you've been working on, we could have a special debut of it at the tourney :)

guys just remember im still doing my offers for training all day or a week for money (generally like 100 a day but a lot less per day if it's for a week obviously) since this is prolly the only time im gonna be in kansas ever prolly so just let me know ppl that are interested in this by PMing me.

also, i need a better melee controller. if anyone has a sensitive, really good controller, let me try it please. I'll buy it off you if I really like it or something. thanks

I would do that, but technically he hasn't given me permission to do so.

I'm not going to unless I get his approval.

You should ask him then, since big names are the biggest draws for OoS players

Has he openly said to not put his name in the title? This is pretty important for your tournament to be entirely successful, I'd say

If he hasn't given approval, I take that as a no. That's how things usually work in the real world. It's nothing personal I assume.

I don't think it's illegal to put that someone is confirmed as attending an event if they actually are confirmed as attending an event... First off, this is a community where everyone can find out anything we post regardless, and it's just a statement of fact, not like you're portraying his name in any particular way

I agree, it's just one of those things that happens when you're a top player—the name-drops for promotional purposes. Besides, the bigger the turnout the more money for him when if he wins

Oh I figured it probably wasn't a legality issue. More of a courtesy thing

It's fine. Several touraments have had his name in the header, I seriously doubt those TO's personally asked him if it was okay.

I don't care about the precedent and what other TO's have done in the past. When he gives me the personal ok, then I'll add him as confirmed in terms of advertisement. Not before then, not until then.

Bureaucratic bullsh*t like this is why the tournament has no hype.

M2K has been to a million billion tournies and a million billion TOs have put his name in titles. You are actually doing him a disservice because his goal is now to make money, and people won't come without big names in the title, sorry. (BTW he has a history of not answering PMs).

By putting people's names into the thread you also give them that real motivation to go if they are teetering. Possibly the hardest part of TOing (and where most TO's faulter in the MW) is getting those big names to agree to travel all the way out here. Things like this and not wanting to feature the tournament as another Event 52 will mean that no matter how good your TO skills (or TO team) is, you won't have anyone show up.

In order, of why it isn't BS.

If he wants to endorse it he will. It's still over a month off so we have time to work it out. I'm not doing him any sort of disservice, obviously it's nothing personal. I'm already going to be going out of my way with an aggressive local campaign to help "potfill" for him including a paid newspaper campaign, something most TO's wouldn't normally service him with.

And in regard to all the business about E52, I am looking at the title. And seeing Event 52. Not sure where you're getting that from. I was originally hesistant to name it that because I wasn't affiliated with KC Melee or Darkrain when I started out the tournament. Once I got approval from KC Melee and understood it was "their" event, I changed the name and it hasn't been brought up since.

The idea anyway was to promote local interest first, and then hope to pull in some regional interest, all while raising money to feed the homeless. I'd be happy with ANY regional attendance, but I feel I'm more responsible for working on the local end. I would love for him to endorse it, as it would probably help both regional and local interest. But if he doesn't, then it's not some end of the world situation where we won't have anyone show up.

I'm kind of with Peef on this one...trust me, people will flake, your attendance will drop, it happens every single time—so you need all the help you can get right now.

Also, a month off is about the time that most players start working OoS tournies into their schedules, in order to round up their crews, take off work, etc. This is the perfect time to really get the tourney exposed and in people's minds. I know you want to work on getting local casuals to attend and that's great, but catching the interest of mid-distance competitive players is actually a surefire way of getting more people in the end. Higher regard for the game (aka not just being a part-time scrub) equals less chance of letting things get in the way of attendance come tourney day. And you use big names as incentive for those players.

Deontology has gotten me this far. I don't think I'll be changing that any time soon.

And one of the central tenants of the philosophy is that people are never a means towards an end. So while I hear and appreciate the opinions you guys have and can see the obvious positives and benefits, it's just the way it's going to be.

Stealth is right. Lobby M2K, not me.

It's your tournament bro. Run it the way you want. Just don't be surprised if your attendance sucks.

I have a big beef with this whole discussion... but I'll try to leave ad hominem comments out.

By putting people's names into the thread you also give them that real motivation to go if they are teetering. Well... since I've already paid 150+ out of my pocket in booking m2k's flight here (on strongbad's behalf), he better damn well be coming. lol

Also, he IS featuring the tournament as another Event 52. I assume you haven't looked at the thread title or anything, but I assure you it's in there.

It's your tournament bro. Run it the way you want. Just don't be surprised if your attendance sucks.
Regurgitating what has already been said, this was initially intended to be a local event. The only reason this is getting regional hype in the first place is because I asked Phil if it was alright to make it the first circuit event. Though it only applies to Brawl players, I think being a circuit event is enough reason to believe attendance won't be that bad. Adding "Event 52" to the title will most likely draw regional attendance for melee.

If anything, Phil and I have had discussions on whether or not the venue will be big enough to hold the hype the event has already received. I think we both agree it'll be fine right now.

I guess my question to you two is... why are you under the impression that the event will be spoiled simply by not adding m2k's name to the thread title?

Sad, I was expecting a "Deontology sounds like the IRL scrub mentality and utilitarianism is playing to win" for me somewhere in there haha

stop being a dumb ***, you're making this into a way bigger deal than it should be.

think of it as a verbal commit to a university football team, many universities use verbal commits from high end recruits to foster a growth of interest in their program, just because some of these verbals will later retract their commitments doesn't make it any less legit of a practice...

your refusal to think out of the box/out of your own comfort zone will not only affect this tourney, but other decisions in your "deontology" lifestyle... seriously stfu with that non-sense

Lux, you can officially put me as attending in the banner, that way the Mega Man people will come, AKA M2K. You have my permission.

Sorry, I go to KU. We don't have a football team that generates interest. So I don't understand your analogy at all. It's too bad the NCAA is currently in the beginnings of a class action lawsuit for profitting off players without their consent. Not that analogies would matter here because it's a bad one.

So given that you're bad at argument by analogy, forgive me for assuming your life advice is also bad.
