i agree, but i still want the game to stay around & continue for a story mode & other stuff.

Best case scenario is that if the game discontinues then they make the game offline with all the content inside similar to "The Slip'n'Slide Squad: Kill the Justice League"
As much as having a offline mode is important for game preservation, I genuinely wouldn't even care because the game has such nothing content that I don't see why I would boot it. Suicide squad make sense because there's an actual story, but Multiversus just has nothing.

They really are ending without adding the Wicked Witch, huh.

Well, at the very least, I can't wait for the wave of information we inevitably get post-mortem about cut content and behind the scenes stuff. This game is genuinely the biggest bag fumble of all time.

Due to the impending shutdown, both the Rate Their Chances and Newcomer Directories are now closed. I also ask everyone not to make any new character support threads.

As the game will remain available for offline play, I feel this thread can remain open (especially since on Steam there’s remote play allowing one to simulate an offline environment online) in case people wish to play that way.

That's disappointing. I suppose it's understandable, all things considered (as it's a free-to-play game, it lives and dies by people's willingness to spend money on microtransactions), but it felt like there was a lot of untapped potential with the concept. (For the Looney Tunes alone, Daffy and Wile E. Coyote felt like huge absences, and that's not even getting into characters who apparently had significant progress like the Wicked Witch)

Still, I enjoyed what I played of the game (I got roughly 128 hours out of it), and it got me to watch Beetlejuice and Gremlins. I'm curious about how the costumes will be handled - going by the FAQ, if you play the game at any point between now and the end of season 5, a local save file will be created to allow people to play the game offline for the foreseeable future, though I wonder if any costumes that people don't get between now and then will remain permanently locked.

Overall, I enjoyed the game - it made for a fun Smash alternative, and I liked how they took chances on some outside-the-box characters. (I think my main for this game wound up being Jason Voorhees, which still feels weird to say about a crossover game that involves Batman, Shaggy, and the Powerpuff Girls)

Honestly, i'm really curious how much of the decission making was on WB?

I keep hearing conflicting info about that. Like a lot of choices were PFG's but there's no evidence about it. The only thing i can blame PFG on is some of the gameplay choices and how the roster is unlocked.

To be fair to PFG, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a corporate thing and not their fault. I could see Warner preventing them from adding her as to not promote Wicked. Maybe it was Universal because they didn't want their movie even kinda associated with this trainwreck lol.

Is the game really preserved, since it won’t be available anymore to anyone who didn’t play in Season 5 after its shutdown? I guess people will find a way to pirate it. So goofy that people would need to pirate a former F2P game in the first place.

Also, aren’t they going to get sued by people who bought the founder’s packs but never got to use all of their character tickets?

At this point my dream with the Multiversus franchise is they do the opposite of Overwatch, which is a "Multiversus 2" that would be buy to play for 40$ or so and used all the unreleased content such as the Mad Max, Courage, Barbie, Over the garden wall stages, and numerous characters like Daffy, Scooby, Wicked Witch, Fred flintstones etc.

But realistically, yeah no way it's happening. I guess PFG and WB are just done with the concept after messing up twice already. Huge shame really.

So what do you think truly killed Multiversus?
Their poor, exclusive business model kind of shot them in the foot a long time ago. I’ve always wanted to invest myself more in the game because of the promising movesets but never felt motivated to take the plunge on account of the time-sink and personal expense that was needed to try out any new characters.

Retroactively games like Marvel Rivals have come along and, despite being a different genre, IMO set the standard through their free to play model. I can go play that game right now and pick up my favorite character day one, with the game’s quality speaking for itself and incentivizing further investment in qualities more superficial than fundamental. They have a confidence in their product that MVS never did. Multiversus was a risk worth taking but hopefully gives a nice clear sign of what and what not to do if anyone ever wants to try something similar again.

Anyway, I wonder what they’ll have in the Season Pass this time. I imagine they’ll try to cram as much new/previously unreleased stuff as they can in there since they can’t make money on it anymore anyway, so there’s no point not adding it in there. Maybe it’ll also have loads of legacy fighter currency for players who don’t have all the characters already since, again, there isn’t much point holding out on them.

Outsider looking in (I guess more "creepy ajar-door eavesdropper looing in"), but I'd argue the thing that killed MultiVersus is well... being mortal in the first place. All F2P multiplayer games die eventually with no official means of play, even Club Penguin couldn't escape the grim reaper's scythe, and it creates an unfortunate atmosphere where success existentially matters for the game as a whole, not just further content, which is terrible for everyone involved - whether the keys they've worn out are "WASD" or "C:/"

Some quick details from the FAQ for those who didn’t read it:

1. Our final characters are Aquaman and Lola Bunny. Both will be available as follows:
Aquaman: Tier 1 in the Battle Pass
Lola: Log in reward.

2. Players can no longer buy anything, but may spend any remaining currencies on stuff they may not have yet. All of this season’s content will be available through gameplay. Battle Pass tokens will not be needed for the final pass, which will be a 70 tier Battle Pass.

3. After shutdown, local multiplayer (including vs A.I.) and training will be available. You must log in before May 30 to access this. Anything earned or purchased before May 30 will be available. All characters will be available.

So what do you think truly killed Multiversus?
A storm of bad decissions that started the second they went into hiatus:

  • Remaking the game in Unreal 5. No strong argument has been given as to why
  • No clear identity after a while, They were just making combat changes for the hell of it
  • Character unlocks were grindy and unintuitive. Not to mention how often the game forced you to use certain characters for dailies.
  • Way too many scummy monetization practices, watch Whydo's video on MVS for more detail
  • Bad word of mouth
  • WB is always profit first, quality second. They pulled support on MK1 and that was a bigger title than MVS.

Im more on the blame WB side. I truly don't know how much input the PFG devs truly had

I try not to get too hung up on the roster choices, since I know how entitled it sounds and to some extent I’d like to see the devs do their own thing. Effectively I’m just peeking in the window from outside anyway. But knowing that out of all the characters who were conceptualized they chose to end with Lola Bunny makes Multiversus’ decisions baffling and frustrating until the bitter end.

The thing is, I don’t even really mind the choice in a vacuum. But I’m left scratching my head at what the MVS team feels they can do with Lola Bunny that LeBron doesn’t already bring to the table. Shame that they didn’t read the writing on the wall and finish Daffy before the timer ran out.

No qualms with Aquaman, but he feels like a character who should have been here by now.

Of the datamines, we know that Wicked Witch was the only character from the C0 list missing. Besides 3 other spots that were left unknown.

And now we are just never gonna know.

At the very least, there are modders that are interested in continuing to update the game

When you say "all characters are available" does that mean they'll all be unlocked for everyone?

Yes, that’s how it works now.

You still need to unlock them for online, but since the online is shutting down, only offline modes will be available after May 30.
Good to know! I guess there's not much of a point in unlocking them for online considering that. But it's good to know that I'll at least be able to try the fighters I didn't get yet

****.

I’ll give more detailed thoughts when I’m at my computer, but if the season is going on until May, why only two characters? They can’t take the last remaining time they have to finish Daffy and the Wicked Witch?

I think that the Wicked Witch was ordered to be scrapped by the WB execs to avoid promoting a competitor's film, as Wicked was made by Universal.

last month alone saw the launch of Infinity Nikki, POE 2 and Marvel Rivals, all of which have been massively successful. I don't think the GAAS model was inherently a killer here, but the game just struggled to give people reasons to come back. The weird marketing, the taking the game offline for a year to launch in a less finished state, the odd character release schedule. I think a lot of people had just had enough, and it's a shame, because the game has so much potential.

They probably don't have the time, is the thing. Seems like the plug being pulled was a pretty late decision. they're just putting out what they had already sone.

Under normal circumstances, I would be happy with what I got, instead of dwelling on what could have been.

But with THIS game of all things? It's hard not to do that.
  • They started out pretending the beta release was the full release, until they didn't.
  • They took a full year off, mainly to "upgrade" to Unreal Engine 5.
  • They chose characters like Banana Guard and Nubia over Marceline and Scooby-Doo.
  • Their final characters are Aquaman and Lola Bunny. Not only should they have been available at launch, but if one of our final characters is a clone character, all good charm is off.
  • That's not even going into the hints, leaks, and datamines for the past three years. The Wicked Witch of the West, Emmett, Fred Flintstone, Harry Potter, Gandalf, Mad Max, Johnny Bravo, Ruby Rose, even Mr. Meeseeks. Their data is all but lost to the annals of computer history.
  • To top it all off, WB purchased Player First Games, fooling us into thinking they would have a healthy lifespan. Only to fall under Tango Game works Disease, where your parent company is so paranoid about losing EVEN A SINGLE PENNY that anything and everything will be shuttered or written off to save money.
In short, screw David Zaslav with a rusty branding iron.

I don't wanna like... be a **** and rub it in, but I been saying for a long time that character spots were far more limited than people thought and they should be frontloading with winners. Been saying it since Beta, even. And look where baffling stupid character choices end us with on this lineup, that had so much potential.

As much as I genuinely do love playing some of the characters, honestly? Seeing the way that they've fumbled the bag at literally every opportunity? Good riddance to bad rubbish.

After the rumor of the shutdown came out I decided to think about like, what I would have liked the roster to look like in a hypothetical reboot where it's a regular retail release, I have full control over the roster, and it isn't completely poisoned by the Multiversus brand name. Went for a roster of 48 characters: thirteen more than the actual game, with all but nine characters being retained (I only had so much space lol). Figured I'd share it here for old times' sake.

I mean, personally I think they've been doing decently well by the roster over the last couple seasons. PPG, Samurai Jack, Beetlejuice, Raven and Marceline were all strong choices that people had been waiting for. If anything those characters not revitalizing interest toward the game was kind of the death knell that proved even adding long sought after characters wasn't going to make up for its well of other issues.

I think Lola is a lame way to end too, but the roster is far from the only or even greatest problem with that in mind. I think controversial characters could justify themselves through enticing gameplay and charisma, as they do in Smash. But when the gameplay is already unpopular and the means of getting characters feels so daunting as is, it's simply not worth the effort for most people.

So! I'm pissed!

I really wanted this game to make it. Even when other people were trashing it, I still believed this game could squeeze out a good life for itself, the same way Fortnite did. A lot of the stupid decisions were just growing pains, I thought! I'll keep going, playing, supporting. This game, despite it all, was pretty good to me. It had characters I cared about at launch like Finn and Jake, Steven and Garnet, Bugs Bunny, Taz, characters I had nostalgia for like the DC characters, Tom and Jerry, Shaggy and Velma, and then it started adding in characters who were at the top of my wishlist, Marvin, Samurai Jack, Raven, Marceline, the Powerpuff Girls!!! Dexter and Daffy Duck were heavily teased and leaks showed they were in the works, Scooby Doo and the Animaniacs were heavily implied, and they were even talking to the voice of Brak! I thought that WOW, in another year this is going to be such a good roster of characters I really love and care about!

I pushed through the boring stages, the buggy updates, the disastrous relaunch, Jake getting ruined, the sweaty Ranked mode, the constant combat overhauls, the lousy Rifts, the FOMO elusive skins, hell, I never really had to put up with Fighters Road, I always had enough currency to get everyone. I even liked the battle pass because it always meant I had something new to look forward to while I played. Through it all, I thought the game was fun and had characters I liked, and unlike Smash and NASB, the work I put into it actually paid off. I was... good at a game?! Surely, being WB's last remaining live service game, they wouldn't just shut it down out of nowhere, I was still getting matches no problem.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm kind of conflicted. I don't know if I feel like I wasted my time or not. I mean, it was fun, I guess.

I do think not having Daffy as the last character is probably my last straw. Multiversus had one of the most fickle, entitled, defeatist playerbases I have ever seen, but the ONE thing almost everyone could agree on is that Daffy Duck needed to be in the game.
And they put in Lola Bunny instead.
I defended a lot of the wacky character choices, and hell, I don't have a problem with Lola being in the game on principle, but for gods sakes, this was the ONE character EVERYONE WANTED. You really couldn't try and at least squeeze him out last minute? You couldn't have at least ended on a bang with THE most requested character the game had ever seen? Yeah, everyone was right, these devs and their character choices ARE stupid. Ending it on two actual laughingstock characters just sums up the game as a whole. What a ****show.
And now no Dexter, despite the barrage of teases, no Wicked Witch despite being literally finished, we'll probably never know who those last CO characters are.

What a ****ing bummer.
