Shigeru Miyamoto has said that Nintendo needs to decide whether to stick with its free online gaming service or introduce a paid subscription model.

Online-compatible Wii and DS titles are currently free to play using Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection service, but in a recent interview Miyamoto suggested this could change.

“… Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realise is the core [online] business structure,” Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development boss told us. “Do we need to demand customers pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they get some extra value? With these core business strategies I think we are less active than we should be.”

Despite this admission, Miyamoto rejected the suggestion that Nintendo has only taken small steps in the online space.

“To be honest, I think it’s rather unfair whenever I hear such comments – that Nintendo isn’t proactive when it comes to its online strategy. The fact of the matter is that we always want all Wii consoles to be connected online, all the time, so Nintendo has never been less than proactive in that kind of endeavour,” he said.

“It is true, though, that Nintendo hasn’t been very proactive in developing such online activities as an MMOG. But when it comes to our endeavours that try to take advantage of internet technology, where we can provide our customers with more fun and entertainment, then I think we can say we have been very, very proactive and well-received. And that attitude won’t be changed at all in the future.”

I assume that this will be future online setups on the next console and possibly 3DS. Right now, if Nintendo was to charge for their crappy NWFC, it'd practically be a crime. If they can get it up to XBL or even PSN, I'd be willing to pay in the event that the online service is available in tiers.

I suppose one benefit they could add to a paid service is your own Gamertag while free services still have friend codes (kind of like a temp file).

It'll be a cold day in hell before I even BEGIN to think about paying for Nintendo's online service.

This. Most of their games are poorly polished, or just horrible, and their current online service is laughable. This would have to be like 50x better than XBL before I'd even consider purchasing an online service from Nintendo.

I think it would be a better idea if Nintendo actually improved their service and then maybe next gen added a paying subscription. I think it would be an idiotic move to force people to pay with their current online AND make them pay when their already used to the free online. Who knows, maybe if they had better online we could actually see some......good online games.

How does a paid online subscription benefit it's fans? I cannot afford to pay for online and I would outright boycott future Nintendo systems if this were to happen.

They need to do what Sony did with PSN and keep all options they originally had free and extra bells for online subscriptions. If they force everyone to pay for online, I'm calling BS.

Now don't get me wrong, I think Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is decent, but forcing us to pay for online is not the only way for us to improve online. Look at PSN. It's a great service now and it has been improving ever since the launch of the PSN and it's free (At least of what we had).

The company can secure faster connections with an paid for online service.
This might just be something similar to what Sony is doing. Online play is free, extra features cost money.

Ah, Nintendo never cease to amazing me.
/sarcasm

But in all seriousness, like what Crashic said, They could keep online free and all the fancy extra features could cost money. Nintendo CAN do it, but they gotta pull their 8-bit cartridge out their ***'s first.

It's time for them to "step it up."

Exactly what I'm talking about. I'm perfectly comfortable with online subscriptions as long as these things are free online:

Online Play (Main reason why I'm not getting a Xbox 360)
Voice Chat
Rankings/Leaderboards
DLC

I'm just going to add to the general consensus that Nintendo would have to significantly improve their service before I even considered paying for it.

jolly old england. hohoho.
Considering Miyamoto even accepts there is criticism of Nintendo's current online model I think it's a given there would be an overhaul of the system if Nintendo were to ever charge customers for online play.

How about:
-No friend codes
-Achievements
-DLC and demos
-Chat with anyone online
-Ban hackers online
-Lag-free
-Leaderboards

If all of the above, then maybe I'll pay for online.

I still wouldn't pay because PSN is free and I use that more than I use NWFC. I can't see myself paying for something I use less than a better and free alternative.

lol, what? You know they've sold 70 million Wiis by March 2010 right? It's been out for a year less than the 360 and almost double the amount of units shipped. Yeah, they're really hurting.

I think it's hilarious that he announced that they would in fact be charging for a hypothetical online system they haven't even made yet. They're obviously not talking about the WFC they have now.

I'd probably quit playing on wifi if this happened.

However, (doubt this is what they're implying but) if they overhauled the system BIG TIME AND added online capabilities to VC games like the Street Fighter series, Mario Kart 64, and pretty much any other multiplayer game, I might be willing to pay a yearly fee if I could get a realistically lagless multiplayer experience.

This.

Once they have something actually decent for their online I'll consider paying for it. I'm just assuming that they aren't actually intending to try and charge for what they have now, because I don't think anyone could be that stupid.

You'd be surprised how stupid people can be.

I have a strong feeling that BL90's post is going to sum up most the responses to this thread and that it will be constantly quoted.
