To be fair, Christmas isn't a real holiday in Japan. Sakurai is not a Christian, and he's not doing anything special by giving an update on a day that's not a holiday for him...

Sakurai did wish us a merry christmas yesterday, he just called it holidays instead. The 24th is the big day everywhere in the world except in US. For us here in Europe the 25th is like any other day, and Sakurai treats it like so too. Because of that I don't really blame Sakurai, I got my Smash present yesterday in the form of Rainbow Road, the rest of you could consider it an early present.

As for Starfy, I never really considered him as having a terribly big chance either way, so at least he's back as an AT.

I hate when the principal character of an unrepresented franchise ends up as an Assist Trophy, and instead we get overrepresentation of characters from tiny series like Mother or Star Fox...

Mother only has two reps, a couple of items, and only three stages across three games(And one game did not even have a Mother Stage) I would hardly call Mother overrepresented.

As for Star Fox, its fallen on hard times but its still a much more well-known and popular franchise than Starfy. Maybe 3 characters is overkill, but Star Fox does not really contribute much in terms or items or even stages. And there's still the possibility Wolf might get cut this time, so Star Fox is not really safe.

Neither is really overrepresented all things considered. Star Fox having three reps may be pushing it, but Mother is represented just fine with two characters. And I don't think a new Mother character will be added in Smash 4, given the series has pretty much ended.

i'm a bit gutted about starfy being an assist trophy. as i really wanted him to be playable, but given 2 of his games, released outside of japan weren't big sellers, not to mention that kirby is more recognisable than starfy - both characters are in a lot of ways similar - it's still nice to see him in this game. rather that than to not have starfy at all.

Thus, I shall remain unsurprised by any lack of new characters and be pleasantly surprised if I'm proven wrong.

Not that it matters for me. There isn't anyone else I want aside from Captain Falcon and I've come to terms with the possibility of him not returning, as sad as that would be.

It would be a tragedy for me at least. To me Golden Sun represents a franchise that could have been truly great. The first two games were fantastic and it had a lot of potential to be Nintendo's answer to Final Fantasy but then Dark Dawn sat in development hell forever and wound up as a very underwhelming game. Three years later, the series is still on a cliff hanger and I don't think that's fair for, in my opinion, a franchise that should have ended up as one of Nintendo's best with how much promise it once had.

I'm kind of tired of seeing this logic. Whether he celebrates it or not, it would only be respectful to acknowledge a holiday for a group of people he sees as important to the fan base of Smash, and he certainly seems to have already acknowledged it with his happy holiday wishes & rainbow road, not to mention revealing an assist star while another playable star is next to him sounds pretty coincidental for a Christmas update, a holiday highly revolved around stars.

If Rosalina is playable at the start I wouldn't count out another Mario character yet. Bowser Jr. is a perfect unlockable character, as is Paper Mario.

All I'm saying is, Mother is one of the smallest series in Smash Bros. and yet it has more characters than a LOT of franchises. Some nine franchises, I believe. It got more stages than Fire Emblem ever did, has more DIFFERENT characters than Metroid(Don't even argue with this point unless you are about to tell me Lucas isn't a real Mother character, and they are literally "Ness" and "Hatless Ness"), and it has near as many items in the series as The Legend of Zelda or Donkey Kong. Not to mention it has, once again, more than series like Metroid or Star Fox.

Seriously. It gets an exceedingly generous amount of acknowledgement from Smash Bros. Exceedingly generous.

Anyway. As much as today probably hurts for Starfy supporters, most of you guys still have a chance in the painful lottery that is the SSB4 Roster. So at least there's that.

Probably because most people would know him from Brawl, where all he does is spin around and hit people for low amounts of damage.
