I agree. Music should be valued upon each song's individual appeals, and not lumped into a category that people can just say they don't like.

Human kind's near obsessive habit of categorizing everything into smaller and smaller subsets is just an attempt to create a false sense of order in a chaotic existence.

It's also partly where racism comes from.

i don't really agree. genres are a necessary evil. without genres it would be awfully hard to talk about music.

and not lumped into a category that people can just say they don't like.
only closet minded morons do these kinds of things. unfortunately that's how most people are when it comes to music.

There's no bad genres, just musicians I don't enjoy listening to.

The genres themselves are well... just that. Categories. Pretty neat for saying something like "I feel like listening to some more jazz, got any recommendations, man?" :D

I feel the same way, except for country music... I just cant stand that ****. The worst 30 seconds of my life was when I was playing dota and an ad for some country festival came up on spotify. I tried to listen to it open mindedly, but it sounded like trash. Take poorly written songs about things I don't care about and throw in some cheap audio filters at cheesy times and thats how you get a genre of music that I can't listen to.

i really can't listen to, like, music that falls into one specific genre (except pop, which, really isn't one genre). it's usually just lacking imo. besides, in this day and age of music, there really isn't much music that falls into a big one genre (rock, electronic, blahblah). that's why there are a bunch of genre words you can use to describe something.

like cowpunk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4cK0Bsl1wA&feature=youtube_gdata_player

and folk-punk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0cxrA3dTv4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

fight pop, haha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk0EYTAduBc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

experimental pop/ noise pop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLRnmQ-4Yp0&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Dude, get Spotify premium. Especially if you have a smart phone. Ive gotten so used to the lack of ads that when my plebian friends use their Spotify and an ad comes on I literally cringe.

I really feel like genre designations are arbitrary and limiting.

I think genres say a lot more about people than actual music. When you hear someone, who you don't know anything about, likes country, you might think of a southerner stereotype. When you hear someone, again, who you don't know anything about, likes metal, you might think of a metalhead stereotype.

I feel the opposite spyro. I don't classify people by their music, but music definitely falls into categories. I don't really believe in classifying down to the tiny subgenres (for example, metal has so many subgenres that only vary by small details) but overarching genres are important. If I couldn't say something was rock or metal or rap or hiphop etc, i wouldn't be able to explain music to someone (without having a degree in music where I could just be like "oh yeah that song is at 160 BPM 4/4 time and has progression from G minor to B major" or something like that).

I don't like to stereotyping either but it's always in the back of my mind. I still think genre doen't matter. I think if you can do this, than genre doesn't mean a whole lot.

I feel oppositely. I feel they expose the fundamentals of the genre better. For example, the ghost busters theme was 80's/90's rock (keyboard heavy, guitar solos, but fairly "pop") and ACDC is obviously rock/metal. In my eyes, the mashup doesn't show that genres don't exist but instead show some the key components that make up the rock genre.

So my roommate and I were playing some melee, my Luigi vs. his Captain Falcon on Yoshi's. I guess I should first explain that in our house Randall is crack and we're both addicts. So naturally when I saw an opportunity to wavedash on over to Randall I took it. So there's my little blue Luigi happily beginning his taunt from his cumulus perch when Captain Falcon (aided by his shockingly aerodynamic nipples) comes flying off the stage aiming an angry knee. Poor Luigi never had time to react. Luckily his, "I'm super cool and riding Randall" promptly spiked Mr. Falcon and my life was complete.

Good topic.

Anyone who attempts to mod the 64 section (Surri-Sama/DMoogle/Krynxe).

Krynxe here too.

Fuzzyness is hated by a lot of Europe from what I've seen.

AlphaZealot but he's not around much in MD anymore.

Mic128 maybe?

I think most of the mods are cool, but my experience with some of the admins has been awful. Crimson King, for example. Mic and Hylian are cool.

I hate mods who drive away people in the community because their butts hurt so hard every day they have to take it out on someone.
