You know, I drove 12+ hours to Apex… I think that would constitute as committing myself pretty well to playing this game…
Go 80 MPH on a donut tire on a car that leaks break fluid. Then you'll get that commit status.

Given, I could drive 4+ hours more often, but I have trumpet to practice
Play while you drive. There is absolutely no downside to this. Trumpet on the steering wheel, and play with your very soul to turn the steering column.

and money to not spend.
Don't eat. Problem solved.

As it is, any tournament less than 4 hours away from me I go to very very consistently. I just wish there were more opportunities around me.
So you went to the Louisville tourney that was 1 hour out, then?

Also, you have to remember that while I go to college in Muncie (my listed location here on smashboards) I often am in Columbus, IN (where I actually live), which adds at least 2 more hours to anywhere I would drive to in MI.
I cannot remember what I do not know.

I'd be much obliged for someone like Xero or other good Mario players to give me a few pointers on how to improve my game. I'm sure there are some serious fundamentals here that you guys can chew me out on(and please, have at it), but some Mario-specifics would be the most helpful.

Kill the Shielding habit as well...I see alot of Mario/Weegees shielding alot for no reason when you can do empty sh's/Sh retreating fireballs/etc

Looked like you were having trouble edgeguarding that ZSS. I'd suggest actively trying to edgehog against her and forcing her to double jump and/or downB early, then intercepting her after that. Afterall, if YOU have the ledge, then SHE can't, right?

Also, there are certain match-ups where you wanna save Usmash pass like...75%? ZSS is one of them. With her Dsmash, SideB, long tilts and tether grabs, Fsmash can be hard to space for kills. Usmash definitely steps up as your number one killer in this match-up, especially since she's super light. Early in her stock, I'd use it for juggles, then maybe once or twice to beat an aerial after that. After about 75% though, I save it for kills.

Just a few basic things I picked up from the one vid I watched. DEFINITELY keep working at it. Always great to see new, wide-eyed Marios (new to me anyways) enter the scene. If you can stomach wifi, I'd be more than happy to have a few matches too sometime, if you'd like.

Right off the bat i can tell you use bair too much. Don't land with airdodge, try to land with an aerial, footstool, or a b special. use more cape vs jolts too
Footstool might be kinda risky since you won't be able to defend yourself while footstooling.

I watched GF 2:

Indeed, a bit too much Bair when you could have finished him off in another faster way.
I liked how you used Up-B to escape from the Pika and make some room, you should practice that some more; it's efficient. One last thing: When Pika's recover with Up-B, try charging U-Smash; with good timing you might catch them in their move.

You didn't play bad or anything, it was pretty nice.

not really. there are certain moves you can footstool with no risk such as gaw's upsmash(and moves similar to it) and you can footstool some aerials like ike upair(well spaced).

Yes and no. That ZSS is my usual sparring partner, so we've been going back and forth on how best he can recover. Her plasma whip is insane with it's reach - the moment I drop off the ledge she has it, and he's been keeping himself pretty well distanced if I every nab the edge - far enough to not fear a nair/fireball to catch him if he tries to nab the edge immediately. That said, I took your considerations to heart, and I seem to have a good idea of what to do in most situations, and made life hell for him today with your suggestions. Coming at him from a horizontal yet slightly vertical angle seems to be best when edgeguarding with fireball pressure. Kills his uair habit, at least.

Okay, yeah. Tested this out today, and it's working like a charm. Interesting that I started using USmash as a general all-purpose move when he started to pick up ZSS as a main - never saw much use in it as a kill move for her.

I picked up a wired adapter to streamline my wifi play, so I can stomach it well enough. I wouldn't say I'm wide-eyed... just ill-experienced when it comes to actual competition. My matchup experience is my weakest attribute by far.

Picking up the havit of the empty short hop, but can you go into the specifics of how useful it is? Besides the old hat response of 'mindgames/mixups.' I'm aware of the terms and what they mean, but something specific to chew on would be food for thought.

Okay, I such at footstooling too. Make that two weak attributes.

Thanks, I know I got a long way to go before I'm on most people's level - my prediction is fairly awful(three weak attributes, okay). I picked up using the Up-B to deal with Pika's F-throw and Sheik's F-tilt shenanigans. It doesn't always work, but it's especially nice in team's when they're focusing on everything at once and screw up the perfect inputs.

EDIT: @Tmario: I saw videos of your mario, i am very displease.
Eh?? I dont think I have any vids up yet. Anytime a tourny rolls around, I can never get off work!!

Just last night, I'm fighting this G&W. He full hops (probably looking to do his down-slam-key-move-thing) and I short hop. I was SHBairs most of the night, but this time, I DIDN'T. He thought I was gonna bair so he airdodged instead. I fastfell and met him on the ground with a turnaround F-Smash.

That's just one... but empty SH for 'mindgames/mixups' is the general answer.

SHDair is good to start combos but can become predictable. Utilt is also nice. For real aggressive players (at low percents), I like to get in their heads and do nothing. Right after the dthrow, aggros will usually come attacking IMMEDIATELY, which means you should shield grab to dthrow again. My record is 4 consecutive dthrows til he learned to step off a bit.

Yes, it was Coolwhip.
Wait. Did you mean 'Yes it was, Coolwhip.'?

So out of interest, how many of you have an adequate number of Smashers around you? I was thinking to myself that a higher concentration of Smash players seems to gravitate toward the characters higher on the tier list, and areas of low concentrations would have a more varied cast. Just wondering if there is any truth to that assumption.

I live within 10mins of a Samus, Diddy, 2 Sonics, 3 Pikachus, Kirby, 2 ROBs, and a Falco. I myself also main Yoshi.
