Does anyone else here remember the Dark Cloud or Rogue Galaxy games. Those were some of my favorite games ever, especially Rogue Galaxy, but I feel like they never really get much attention these days. I don’t know how likely it is but I would absolutely love to see a revival of these games.

My number one most wanted character for Smash is Zegram Ghart from Rogue Galaxy but I feel like his chances are about as close to 0% as you can get. Even among Level 5 properties, I feel like Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy have been largely forgotten.
I think you have mostly Sony to thank for that since they co-own Dark Cloud, so Level-5 can't do much with the IP without Sony's approval.
They where interested in doing another Dark Cloud game but Sony kinda put a wrench in that plan iirc...

Level-5 has had quite a few of these cases where they worked with characters and franchises that where owned by larger companies what with Dark Cloud and Sony, :ulthero2: and Square Enix and I think Ni No Kuni and Studio Ghibli? (Thought the latter feels more like a Sora type of case where they themselves have a bit more freedom with the IP) especially in the company's earlier days. Its quite a copyright mess. So I guess its kinda understandable why they tend to prefer to work more with the IP's that they more directly own such as Layton, Yo-Kai Watch and Inazuma Eleven etc.

according to my copy ni no kuni is owned solely by level-5. ghibli arent even mentioned, just a think about havok being owned by microsoft and the switch being a trademark of nintendo

edit: have we had this conversation before? i feel like weve had this conversation before

There is only so much you can talk about in regards to Level-5 that hasn't been repeated over and again.

Like how we need to be reminded that their supposedly dying since like 2018 or something every time someone tries to discuss them in the first place...

Funnily, if people brought actual facts into those discussions like how big their mobile game profits are or how Japanese franchises have never been reliant on countries outside Japan to be alive and relevant, they'd realize there's no evidence to actually suggest that.

EDIT: Meamt to add this onto my recent post instead of double posting. My mistake.

lets just be glad that no ones come into this thread to claim that thus far.

I really enjoyed both Dark Cloud games as well as Rogue Galaxy. The first Dark Cloud is a bit dated by today’s standards and tried some new things that ended up being more annoying than fun like weapon durability as well as a hunger and thirst meter. It was a lot of fun for me regardless but I can see why some might be turned off by it these days. The second Dark Cloud improved pretty much everything but only has two playable characters and still as randomly generating dungeons.

Rogue Galaxy is my favorite of the three and is basically a spiritual successor to Dark Cloud with identical combat and weapon crafting. It did away with random dungeons but the layouts can get a little repetitive. The only thing I feel Rogue Galaxy does worse is that it drops the fun town building aspect for a much more confusing item creation factory. You should still be able to buy Rogue Galaxy for cheap on the PS4 online shop but I’m not sure about the Dark Cloud games.

Whoops! I think I missed a notification and forgot about this thread...

Anyway, uh, Level-5 has had its hands in a lot of franchises for sure. It's kind of crazy how much output they used to have relative to what they've been up to lately...

perhaps they felt they overstretched themselves and are scaling back?

Happy 23rd anniversary Level-5!
Here's hoping to see them carry on Puzzle Solving, Football Kicking and Yo-Kai Watching for many more years to come.

They're releasing some fancy cups in honour of Level-5's 23rd anniversary! They're based on the three biggest franchises too - Layton, Yokai Watch, and Inazum - Megaton Musashi. The third pillar of Level-5. Megaton Musashi...

The reason they're mugs is so you can use them to pour one out in memory of Inazuma Eleven

Well on one hand, I'm glad to see Level-5 is pushing Megaton Musashi to ensure it at least does well in Japan and that Layton is still getting merch and stuff on a regular basis.

On the other hand, RIP Inazuma bros, just can't catch a break can they...?

Yeah, hopefully Megaton Musashi does well! And the Layton and Jibanyan designs are very sleek and nice to see... but also oof; the latest game has been in development for, like, ~5 years and they can't given give Inazuma Eleven fans a mug?

Also, this may not end up being Layton-related, but Fangamer is expanding with a European warehouse and website to sell things from Europe to Europeans. Maybe this will include their Layton merch line! Who knows...

Actually glad this has happened and it’s actually good news for the Layton franchise. It shows that Layton is still popular in Japan despite the fanbase for the franchise being outside of Japan. We’re definitely getting something for the February anniversary. Anyones guess though. Hope those rumours of a potential Layton 8 are true

I mean, next year is pretty much an open year as far as I'm aware in regards to Level 5, asides from mobile stuff, this year is the release of Megaton Musashi, 2023 is for Inazuma Eleven (hopefully finally for them...).
So unless there's some incoming major Yo-Kai Watch release I'm unaware of or something.
We might get something interesting for the Layton series 15th anniversary next year, hopefully...

"JP doesn't talk about YKW anymore."

*Glances at dozens of JP YouTubers that still make numerous competitive Yo-Kai Watch videos less than a day old.

*Glances at Japanese streamers that still play and grind on Puni events.

No joke, it kinda makes me laugh how desperately in denial westerners like to be about Yo-Kai Watch games.

Eh, can't blame them too much since Level-5 hasn't managed to catch on as much in the US as it did in Europe and Japan. Which is probably why they tend to get downplayed more exaggerately.

Even in Smash discussions, they tend to get ignored when people discuss new Japanese companies and characters.

Which is probably why it's not too farfetched to essentially call them Europe's SNK since the latter went through a similar deal for a while...

heres an idea for a topic: are there any one off level-5 games that you wish had a sequel?
Snack World if only for them to make it so you don't need a key or to press buttons scattered on the dungeon floor just to get to the next floor.

A new Fantasy Life would be neat if you don't count the mobile thing...

How about a Level-5 fighting game (Smash style or traditional is up to you)
What characters and stages would you like to see in like, say, a 20 or so slot roster, give or take?

For characters:

  1. Chup (Snack World)
  2. Layton (Professor Layton)
  3. Luke (Professor Layton)
  4. Katrielle (Professor Layton)
  5. Endou (Inazuma Eleven)
  6. Gouenji (Inazuma Eleven)
  7. Matsukaze (Inazuma Eleven GO)
  8. Jibanyan (Yo-Kai Watch)
  9. Whisper (Yo-Kai Watch)
  10. Komasan (Yo-Kai Watch)
  11. Jinpei (Yo-Kai Watch Y-Academy)
  12. Oliver (Ni No Kuni)
  13. Mr. Drippy (Ni No Kuni)
  14. Evan (Ni No Kuni 2)
  15. Toan (Dark Cloud)
  16. Yuelia (Fantasy Life)
  17. Hero (Dragon Quest 8)
  18. Yamato (Megaton Musashi)
  19. Jaster (Rogue Galaxy)
  20. Jeanne D'Arc (Jeanne D'Arc)
Can't really think of any good stages beyond UpTown Springdale from Yo-Kai Watch, a soccer yard for Inazuma Eleven and maybe Tutti Frutti Kingdom from Snack World.

Sure! Here's my selection, I think...

1. Professor Layton (Professor Layton)
2. Luke (Professor Layton)
3. Emmy (Professor Layton)
4. Katrielle Layton (Professor Layton)
5. Jibanyan (Yo-Kai Watch)
6. Whisper (Yo-Kai Watch)
7. Nate (Yo-Kai Watch)
8. Jinpei Jiba (Yo-Kai Watch)
9. Endou (Inazuma Eleven)
10. Gouenji (Inazuma Eleven)
11. Fubuki (Inazuma Eleven)
12. Matsukaze (Inazuma Eleven)
13. Oliver (Ni No Kuni)
14. Yuelia (Fantasy Life)
15. Yamato Ichidaiji (Megaton Musashi)
16. Chup (Snack World)
17. Shoko (Liberation Maiden)
18. Yuhan (Weapon Shop de Omasse)
19. Sohta (Attack of the Friday Monsters!)
20. Beck (Mighty Number 9) / Call (Mighty Number 9)

I'm trying to stick to characters that I believe Level-5 has control over, even though I'm aware that this includes some characters that nobody actually associates with Level-5 as a studio...

Alright, here's my selection then.

1. Layton (Professor Layton)
2. Luke (Professor Layton)
3. Alfendi (Layton Brothers Mystery Room)
3. Katrielle (Layton's Mystery Journey)
4. Mark Evans (Inazuma Eleven)
5. Axcel Blaze (Inazuma Eleven)
6. Jude Sharp (Inazuma Eleven)
7. Arion Sherwind (Inazuma Eleven Go Galaxy)
8. Jibanyan (Yo-Kai Watch)
9. Komasan (Yo-Kai Watch)
10. Whisper (Yo-Kai Watch)
11. Jinpei (Yo-Kai Watch Y-Academy)
12. Oliver (Ni No Kuni)
13. Evan (Ni No Kuni 2)
14. Chup (Snack World)
15. Yamato Ichidaiji (Megaton Musashi)
16. Shoko (Liberation Maiden)
17. Yuelia (Fantasy Life) .

And depending what the legalities may or may not be with Level-5 and Sony & Square Enix...
18. Jaster Rogue (Rogue Galaxy)
19. Toan (Dark Cloud)
20. Hero (Dragon Quest VIII)

I think that covers most of the bases from both old and new, at least as far as most of their popular and well known titles go. (though you can probably replace Shoko with anyone else I suppose)

Stages can revolve around most of these franchises like London, Tutti Frutti Kingdom, Raimond High etc, but I guess you could probably also add some others from games like like Attack of the Friday Monsters, White Knight Chronicles, Bugs vs Tanks, Girls RPG, Weapon Shop De Omasse and Ushiro etc.

That's alot more Yo-Kai Watch representation than what I listed and I adore Yo-Kai Watch lol. At that point, you might as well just make it a Yo-Kai Watch fighting game and have Level-5 character guest appearances like what Puni Puni does.

Forgot to post this last week cuz I've been busy with alot of things, but Puni Puni has a new Event with this theme being King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and I love it.

We have Jibanyan as King Arthur (tho in this case it's King Nyarthur lol)

There's Komasan as Bedivere

Nate as Sir Lancelot

Whisper as Merlin

Insomni whom I'm pretty sure is the Lady of the Lake (not sure why they didn't use Mermaidyn, Mermadonna or Mermother for that tho)

and not sure what's going on with Roughraff, Noway and Brutle.

New Manga 5 comic being teased.

Nevermind the fact that the Layton Twitter itself is teasing this, the fact that they hint at a messy desk with what is most likely a cup of tea alongside it (if the string is anything to go by).
Layton might be getting a little new manga series very soon, a nice way to kick off the new year and the series 15th anniversary if that's the case...

I hope it gets translated. Us people outside of Japan need a W for once
