Tell your friend to try holding away... seriously.
The combos I'm talking about take into account DI and chase.

@plairnkk: I don't know why I quoted what you said instead of just replying to the TC, I wasn't directing that at you. My apologies.

I don't see why the exclusion of some button-pressing techs takes away from the competitive nature of it. Tourney winners didn't win because they could WD or SHFFL, their opponents could do the same.

They won because they played with a higher level of intelligence and tact.

Those are present in every successful game, they are in brawl. I just don't get it.

People like to argue over pointless things. It's what the internet is for (outside of porn).

Trust me, I've tried that. This thread is full of people making ******** and unbacked claims. However when we people with brains refute them their ignorance and/or bias overshadows logic and doesn't allow them to realize they're wrong and stop typing. It would be one thing if people were admit it brawl being a completely easier and more shallow game and just say "I like that it's easier because I now feel i can compete" rather than people saying "BRAWL IS JUST AS DEEP AND MORE COMPETITIVE THAN MELEE"

You guys are just stupid. Brawl is shallow. Brawl is easy. Brawl is newb friendly. That's why you all love brawl and hate melee. Melee was NOT newb friendly. Melee was deep. melee was intimidating. I HOPE brawl becomes deep so that when you brawl forum newbie posters get ***** you fall right back into seclusion where you were before brawl came out.
Yuuuup. ^_^

It appears troll has succeded, Anon is has many lulz in victory, once again SWF is made the *******es of the internet.
Well, in other news, has it ever occured to you idiots that you can be casual AND competitive at the same time? It's not like being competitive means you can't turn on items and play friendly matches with your friends.

A matter of fact that was a pretty good thread hijack, from trolling to casual vs. competitive.

This thread is now about how awesome I am.

Am I awesome, y/n?
N.

Sandwich is epic, not awesome. Big difference.

Oh come on now, I think there's plenty of things that will seperate Nubs and scrubs from competitive players already. For the most part you're not going to see any noobs taking full advantage of powershielding or move decay or the new important out of shield game, are you? Not to mention many of the exclusive character specific ATs that most characters have this time around.

It only takes a look at the difference between a new player trying out Lucario for the first time and a good player like Buzzsaw using him to realise this.

Okay, I am having trouble understanding the idea:

no WD and no L-cancel == shallow game,

Melee wasn't intimidating, the melee competitive scene was intimidating because people had realized the full potential of their characters and were tactically far more advanced than the average guy playing for lulz.

This is still going to be the case. As a matter of fact, if character-specific ATs keep popping up, it could be even more intimidating.

I am NOT saying that brawl is as deep as melee, we just don't know yet. I am saying that it isn't a shallow game and is, as far as I can see, able to sustain a years-long competitive scene.

edit: I realize that the above equation isn't the only reason that some people are calling the game shallow, but those seem to be leading the way.

shallow implies accessible. accessible does not imply shallow.

but plairnk (sry if I butchered the name) , I would like to know why you think the competitive scene will be dominated with a less large pool of character choices than the roughly 5 used in melee tournaments.

Bull****. The scene was never intimidating--in fact people are generally very nice and helpful to people wanting to learn. I didn't start playing until December 06 and my Fox is now "tactically" as good as anyone's, because instead of whining about the game being hard and being a stupid scrub I improved my playing.

The average guy "playing for lulz" should not expect to win tournaments and if he does expect to win he should be laughed out of the scene by his peers.

Okay, take a deep breath. Calm now?

Try to remember really, reaaaally hard to way back when you were a scrub. If you had just walked into a tournament and watched two pros go at it, you wouldn't have been intimidated?

Did you even read the post I replied to? He said that melee was intimidating. I disagreed, saying that the scene (not the people, but the skills necessary to compete) were intimidating.

Calm yet?

I don't know who's being a "stupid scrub" but I certainly hope that wasn't directed at me. I'm not whining, I'm just trying to keep people positive, because I for one want everyone who's interested to become part of the community.

Come on, don't be so pessimistic about Brawl. We have only had a few tournaments for Brawl, and most of the hidden techs come out in tourneys. Just like a month ago, it was the first time I ever saw Melee Fox's reflector reflect up. A fully charged Samus shot reflected up and that has never happened to me before.

We've all heard the term "Don't judge a book by its cover." So lets not do this to Brawl.

It's all opinion.

If the game is balanced and NOT BROKEN, then it can be competitive. The top players in Melee will still be the top players in Brawl. The people who complain are probably the ones who were mediocre in Melee, and thus will be part of an even larger mediocre pool (maybe that's why they're upset).

If you want to argue that complexity and accessibility are functions of a competitive game, then I could argue the Smash series is FAR from being competition worthy when compared to games like Tekken and Virtua Fighter.

This happens in every game community, with every sequel. Let the people who don't want to adapt go away, because you're probably sick of listening to them by now anyway.
Oh hey, look, someone who doesn't have a god **** clue what he's talking about. You don't see many of those around here.

Historically, the most popular competitive games have been the more unbalanced and broken ones. What's the most popular competitive fighter in the US? Marvel vs. Capcom 2. What's the most popular competitive fighter in Japan and the second most popular competitive fighter in the US? Street Fighter 3. What competitive fighter has endured longer than any other? Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

Which game is dying, if not basically dead in the US, and not even that popular in Japan? Virtua Fighter. Which games were removed from Evo's roster in 2008? Virtua Fighter and Guilty Gear, while Marvel, CvS2, SF3 and SF2 Turbo all made a return.

Melee's competitive scene is easily on par with Marvel and SF3 in the US, and it's easily has one of the most thriving competitive scenes overall.

The players who have been complaining about Brawl have included a lot of Melee's great players. Ever hear of Mew2King? He's kind of arguably the best Melee player in the world. Plaiirnk may not be quite as well known but is still like one of the best Melee Sheik mains in the nation.

No. The most competitive games are shooters and RTSs, and those are balanced, since, you know, Everyone can do the same thing.

That's not entirely accurate, Wavedashing was removed as a side-effect of removing directional airdodging, which was removed along with analog shielding to allow for the Wiimote controls to not have a built-in disadvantage.

Touche, but only in respect to the fact that CS, Halo, Starcraft and maybe also Warcraft III have bigger competitive scenes than the competitive fighters. I don't play any of these games at a high level, but I don't entirely believe that these games are balanced, and certainly that they aren't broken.

With that said, I'll restrict the scope of my claim to the domain of competitive fighters, where my statement still stands.

The god-complexes in this thread are even more unbelievable.

The fact that you think my post is irrelevant just proves my point about you 'veterans' ignoring a core elements of what make Smash different than other fighters.

So what are you complaining about?

Oh. So sad for you that you already think you're a god and expect to get better. I didn't know that there was anything better than perfection....something which you've obviously already achieved. That being said, however, it has only been a few days here in the Americas. Only a month if you played the Japanese version. How is it that already people think they know everything about Brawl's engine? Did you work on the game? Am I talking to a celebrity?!

You have to be wrong, otherwise you're only saying I'm right about what I said about it being competitive. Of course, this is ignoring the fact that you think you know me. If a person can dominate in a video game consistently, does that not show competitiveness?

I mean, with the example you used earlier about the coin toss, that's completely random and no one has any control over the outcome. It wouldn't be surprising if out of 100 games there was a different victor every time. If a game is competitive, it means that there actually is skill involved (regardless of what kind) and that a clear pattern can be seen with more skilled players. N00bs may beat people new to Brawl at first, but given a few hours with the game and skilled players clearly shine (even with the oh-so-horrible items and final smashes turned on).

So what did Smash World Forums become the most important site on the internet? No really - apparently, if you haven't made an account on fan-made forum full of ads, jerks, and lag than you apparently know NOTHING about Smash. I mean, if it wasn't for SWF, would Smash Bros even exist? How would anyone know how to PLAY?!?!

Oh wait, it's just a forum...and being registered for a certain amount of time has no bearing on a players skill, intelligence, merit of opinion, or anything else. Guess someone forgot to tell you that...

EDIT:

Because, apparently, he's not anymore.
Sorry if I came off as elitist; I'm just really frustrated with the idiocy on this board. If you want me to be put in my place, ask Plairnkk if he knows who I am; I guarantee he does not, yet I know him because he's very good. All I was trying to get across was that the good, competitive Melee players know best how this game is going to turn out, and most of them agree with one another. Read one of Plairnkk's longer posts and honestly try to refute them.... I'll respond more to this post later when I have more time to address it.

That doesn't make any sense, the wiimote could directional airdodge just fine(albeit at 45 degree angles). I think it was done just to encourage aerial fighting like Sakurai said they were doing way back when. But either way, you know they would have removed wavedashing regardless even if dodge had been unchanged. If they took out intentional techniques like l-cancelling, then glitches like wavedashing would be the first to go.

Wait can shield reflect Fox's Lasers?

I was playing a brawl match with Marth in training and I was playing around with the speed. I put it into 1/4 speed and Fox was shooting me when I was shielding. Believe it or not the Lasers were going Up. So i was like WHAT THE HECK???

Any ways

Hate Brawl go back to Melee. Give Brawl to more deserving people.

I'm really hoping ATs do continue to appear. Because they effing rock when they are discovered: especially being different from melee.

Hate me, but the only things i miss in Brawl include wavedashing (TOO MUCH FUN!) and fast falling.

But btw, this post was so much orgasmic win

Can't keep up with the changes?
Well, good. Keep playing Melee if you're so scared.
Yet another idiot makes his pointless opinion known. Read some of the posts here, then realize it's not the changes that detract people from Brawl, but rather the removal of depth. Brawl is simply too easy, and most good players won't have much room to improve

plank/ other competitive melee players,

I already find myself missing melee and am hopeful it remains a competitive game. Whats the take on the east coast? Whats the chance the melee scene doesnt die? Is there any discussion on this? The people in FL seem intent on moving on to brawl for the most part...

Brawl is like playing melee after being crippled with a hammer like that cheater from casino.

people who like brawl, are people who like watching TV and movies, not playing games.

the first smash was just at fast then melee if you could l-cancell and fast fall well.

brawl would be an awesome game if those two techniques survived but they didn't.

I can't believe people can defend brawl after watching any character do any aerial into the ground.

HAVE YOU SEEN BOWSERS AERIALS, WATCH BOWSER DO A FORWARD AIR INTO THE GROUND!!!!!!!(exclamation marks to infinity*)

True smashers have been crippled, true gamers have been crippled.

they have essentially removed the whole competetive aspect of the game, because in melee and the first smash bros there was no limit to how fast you could attack with certain characters, (see isai shield breaking with ness's downsmash in the first smashbros, and silentwolfs techskill videos with fox in melee) smashers were finger athletes like piano players, small muscle athletes who created art with there fingers. speed, style, trickery all integrated to a form a a beautiful way to win thousands of dollars travelling to competetions across the nation, continent, world. like a pokemon trainer traveling to uknown magical territory to find and train new pokemon smashers trained there characters and discovered new combos and tricks(because of l-cancelling) and were able to bring there characters to heights not capable by average casual smashers(because of l-cancelling) they were free to express there speed and fury in an untethered fashion and strike fear into the hearts of regular players wishing to achieve the same abilities(mainly because of l-cancelling)

bottom line is the freedom that once was smash was mostly due to l-cancelling and which enabled you to eliminate lag and be free in your style. free as a bird

why didn't they keep l cancelling, thats why everyones pissed, its like aw sweet Brawl is out. wait why is fox just lying on the ground i must have just ****ed up, what why isn't the lag cancelling why is ganon just lying on the ground GET UP GANON, PLEEAAASE GANON WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS, WHY GANON, NO NESS YOU TOO, CFALCON, MARTH, BOWSER WAKE UP WAKE UP BOWSER WHYA ARE YOU SLEEPING WE HAVE TO FIGHT MARIO IS SHOOTING FIREBALLS AT US GET UP BOWSER WE HAVE TO JUMP TO SAFTEY WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME,
Why???? WHHHHHHYYYYYYYY????? aaaaaasgafgnsdkdgmn bfbv fnmv fdsmnvg asdmn vgmnsd gvmnasd vgmnas dv whhhhhyyuuhyhyfhdsf oh whyyyyyyyy, WHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

thats why this thread was made, so the grieving could vent there sorrow

we need to get our tears out go back to watching the cut scenes between levels in
one player mode and let use grieve gawd dammit

if anything, brawl is frusterating and quite frankly boring because its so familiar but still so far below and away from the high pace atmosphere that is melee. doesn't mean i'm giving up on it, but i'm getting a feeling that they wasted all this potential in an irrelivant, no-one-is-going-to care-about-in-6-months adventure mode.

EDIT: brawl=tripping. nuff said.

I think Brawl has been a great game so far.
I didn't think it would be a Melee 2, and I was right. With Smash Bros, you have to expect almost everything to change with each game. I can't think of any real similarities between the original and Melee besides the basics, and that's almost the same with Brawl and Melee as well. If you expected Brawl to just be an update of Melee, you were disappointed.

Personally, I would rather have a Brand new flavor of Smash than a Melee 2.0.

I felt the same way.

I got over it.

Only a few things really annoy me about Brawl:

- Lucario
- Load times
- Slow and floaty (I'm getting more used to it, fast games are just a preference)
- Combos (what is a fighting game without combos? Crap, that's what. Glad to see they are still doable in Brawl, just different. Holding A and having Fox continuously kick or Meta continuously swing his sword was a real stupid move, IMO)
- Brawl haters *****ing about wavedashing (I main Luigi in Melee, so I am proficient in wavedashing, but let's face it, it was the most likely thing to go)
- Tripping (I can understand from an item or down a slop or something, but why is it when I walk across Smashville, Luigi falls down a few times every minute with no outside influence?)
- "Brawl is the best smash ever you stupid tourneyf*g" fanboys (even worse than the haters. Don't get me started.)

Awesome Post

So i'm going to compile all arguments thus far into one easy post to read, and it'll be my last post in the thread. I'm attempting to address both sides - as I avidly play Brawl I don't want people to think otherwise.

I'll start with the obvious.

Advance Techs:

Advance techs removed from melee-->Brawl:

Wavedash: By no means a necessary tech, but very useful in the process of cancelling dashes and turning around. Also sped up platform games DRAMATICALLY by being able to land on them whenever. Taking out wavedashing also took out triangle jumping which was a useful way to get in on some ranged attacks.
Taking this out? LIMITING

Dash Dancing: Perhaps the staple to Smash's current metagame. Bait an attack and run in and hit them. Gay? Yes. But easy to beat? Yes, if you're decent at the game.
Taking this out? LIMITING

Light Shielding: A very useful tech that allowed one to shield against spam or aerials with a bigger shield that wasn't very rapidly deplinished. Useful to defend against camping.
Taking this out? LIMITING

Powershield (Reflector attribute): When powershielding a projectile (powershielding was actually hard to do in melee compared to brawl) the projectile would fly back the way it was sent. Very useful in defending against camping.
Taking this out? LIMITING

Jump Cancelling: When running in melee you could cancel your run with a jump into a grab with less lag or an upsmash. In Brawl if you try to do this you simply air dodge into the air. You can, however, just run and hit the C-stick up without jump cancelling and perform an upsmash. One of many ways they simply dumbed down the gameplay.
Taking this out? LIMITING

Rolling from the edge get-up lag for edgeguarding: Previously when edgeguarding you could roll and the edge would be held for the animation while you rolled. This has been removed making edgeguarding even less practical.
Taking this out? LIMITING

Advance techs implemented from melee:Brawl:

Wall Clinging: Basically useless. Can be used to camp. Will be banned in tournaments if is done for too long.
Adding this in? USELESS

Tripping: Random tripping is awful.
Adding this in? LIMITING

Edgegrab lag: Now when you grab the ledge you're forced into nearly a second of lag before you can do anything else. This is done so you can't use your invinicibility frames to your advantage - another act of limiting gameplay.
Adding this in? LIMITING

Footstool Jump: Very interesting thought - has a lot of potential for edgeguards as it sends the opponent down. I'm interested to see where advanced play takes this.
Adding this in? Expanding!!!!! Yay, something good =)

Move Knockback Decay When using the same move over and over the damage AND knockback are decreased. I am impartial to this. I am glad because kill moves can't be spammed over and over, but simple moves like uptilts combo many many times in a row because they send less and less each time while the opponents damage is going up each time. Nonetheless I'd still say
Adding this in? Expanding

Crawling: Character crawls low to the ground - but is extremely slow and vulnerable. A rather useless tech.
Adding this in? USELESS

Shielddropping: The most useful tech added in thus far - and probably something us good brawl players abuse the most. Very useful to drop your shield after an attack and punish with whatever.
Adding this in? Expanding!!!!! Definitely a stable in competitive metagame.

The Physics Engine:

The physics engine in brawl is simply created in a limiting manner.

Combos: Yes combos still exist, but they are no longer guaranteed. They are based on your opponents inability to control their character or know what they're doing. The universal floatiness of everyone leaves "combos" extremely similar on every character and overall promotes shallowness. The lack of hit-stun lag allows one to airdodge almost instantly after being hit or to break up a "combo" with a move of their own with relative ease. Everyone in brawl you have to treat like Luigi in melee (Note: everyone hated fighting luigi).

Edgeguarding in reguards to the physics engine: When someone is hit off the stage now - for the majority of the characters they essentially have to die off the side before they can't make it back. The overall floatiness of the characters allow for people to make it back without even using their up+b most of the time.

AutoSweetspotting: Awful. Possibly the worst thing that happened to Brawl. Completely takes out many MANY aspects that were present in melee. Unfortunately these aspects are replaced with nothing. Effectively negated the value of edgeguarding tenfold.

Overall Physics Engine change: LIMITING

Random little partygame things

  1. Think of all the levels brought back from Melee to Brawl..Nearly all of them had randomness factors (Pokemon stadium, Onnett, Brinstar, Corneria, Jungle Japes) And the obvious Hyrule temple is simply a party favorite
  2. Some characters now come equipped with items in the orginal costume - only further promoting the use of items in the game.
  3. Fox used to be able to drillshine-->any move. Now fox can just drill-->any move. Same overall concept, much easier to do. This trend is evident all throughout brawl.
  4. Online play: Online play was obviously made as an attempt to make the game a more fun party game..not for competitive play. The lag on online play can be ridiculous, and if you play with random people the game modes people choose are awful. Definitely party game material.

That's about it for now. I'm sure I'm probably missing a few things on each end but overall that's the concept of brawl.

Do i play it? Yes. Am I hopeful it will be good? Yes. Am i better than 99% of brawl newbies reading this post? Most definitely, Yes. But this does not mean I'm going to lie to myself and say Brawl is a better game than melee. If advance techs are released or we figure out ways to make the game better than maybe - but as for now it seems as if Sakurai wanted a party game - and the only reason it's being competitive at all is because we're, as a community, stretching it so far to make it that way.
Awesome Post, read it again.

Let's face it, no one cares what you think and you can't accept change.
Yes, this is near the start of the topic, but QFT.

True smashers will love this game no matter what. Obviously this game is marketed towards more casual gamers. No wonder the people who I find on random really suck.
