To my Brawl Link Broskis: I actually need advice from you all as a P:M player.
My problem right now is... My friend is a Brawl player and doesn't know how to wavedash or L-cancel and all that Melee baloney. HOWEVER, his defensive game with Sonic is so good that he manages to outzone and outplay me. I realize if I kept playing campy players like I normally do, I'll get dominated.
I'd like to know a little about the Link-Sonic MU, or better yet just how to handle really campy players in general.
Well in brawl, and a lot of this might transition over to P:M, to be aggressive Link needs to maintain safe spacing. What this means is kind of waltzing with the opponent and somewhat matching their movements but with Link's spacing (often lower hops and smaller movements with more emphasis on landing cancels). So approach and be near while throwing out bombs, Zair, Fair etc but never close enough the opponent can hit Link. If they move in move back and if they retreat, move in. It's a bit hard to explain but generally keep the opponent no closer than Fair/jab's tip and not much farther than Zair's tip. If they're past Zair's reach that's when to get bombs and projectiles into play.
Be sure to make full use of platforms, ledges and Link's fast falling/landing canceling attacks to support Link's spacing.
This concept is similar for various characters as opponents but you need to space a bit farther or closer with some characters. For example Link should be farther when spacing Marth or Ike than Diddy.
Also, Link shouldn't be aggressive unless he needs to approach or pressure the opponent when they're in a bad spot and should make the opponent chase him as much as possible.

vs Sonic in Brawl at least Link's SH/jump game using bombs appropriately (throw them down as sonic runs under, invincible to cover landings, thrown the forward as needed, etc) and moving camping is hard for Sonic to deal with. Don't stay still and don't stay grounded. Save Link's 2nd jump for when he needs it but don't use it too often.
Sonic likes to delay spindashes and do all kinds of fake-outs. Spin dash sadly goes under bomb forward throws at some spacings and eats weak arrows so keep hopping around. Link should keep pressuring Sonic by sh/jumping projectiles. If you want to smash sonic land near enough that Fsmash 1 or 2 will hit
without Sonic moving forward. If Sonic is pressuring Link, FF Nair is great to break air combos, jab or land>Utilt for ground stuff, and use the aggressive 'waltz' thing I described to hit him with sword attacks.
Also keep in mind Sonic has trouble KOing Link when Link plays keep away and you can eventually rack up a ton of damage before Sonic takes Link out.
