So, would K. Rool’s popularity be a factor as to why they added his costume during the ballot?
It’s hard to think of another reason to add a character who has been MIA for a decade - with a classic design to boot.

Worst reason, like his reasoning to not include Adventure mode in Smash 4.

We're on page 100!! Now that we're here I want to ask everyone a few questions. We've talked so much about how much we'd love to see King K. Rool in Smash Bros, but I wan't to know what makes you such a fan of the character? Why do you love King K. Rool as much as you do and what got you into the DKC in the first place?

I'll start out. When I was younger I had upgraded from NES to an SNES. However, I only had Super Mario Bros. 3 to play with. Then one day I went to my aunts and uncles house and they had a gold mine for SNES games. While I was there my aunt was actually playing DKC1 and we managed to play it together. I thought it was so cool to see Donkey Kong fight an army of crocodiles. She was already far into the game and we managed to get to King K. Rool. I thought he was so vicious! We had been fighting his army, but now we got to face their king! It was a challenge I was ready to accept.

Anyways, we had spent most of the day there, but when I had to go I felt kinda sad because I wanted to play some more. Then my aunt told me to wait while she went to get something. Then boom! She let me have her copy of DKC2. I was left speechless. She didn't mind me having it and she told me that I'd have a lot of fun with it. Oh boy did I treasure that game.

Ever since then I've become such a huge fan of DKC and Rare as a whole. The original trilogy and DK64 hold such a special place in my heart. And I can't thank my aunt enough for giving me such an unforgettable gift. So that's pretty much my story. I'd love to hear all of yours!

"I definitely know that K. Rool's a much-anticipated name for fans, but if we made K. Rool as a fighter, it wouldn’t be K. Rool any longer. He'd have to be slimmed down, or his eye tic reduced in size, or be unable to jump around singing 'One of Us' freely. Providing accurate portrayals of characters is something I want to pay ample attention to. If I don’t stick to that thought, then we’d have to lower the quality or break the balance of the game. Something that goes way off spec could break the entire game.”

The only thing I could think of is "we weren't sure if King K. Rool would click with today's gamers. We wanted to add characters that could be enjoyed by fans old and new." There's honestly no good reason to not put him in at this point.

I got an SNES in 1995 when I was 4 years old. Shortly after I got DKC1 and 2, and played them a ton as a kid. From there I became a fan of the series and bought and played pretty much every game, even the Paon ones. K. Rool was always one of the more memorable bosses from that era, with cool fights and fun costumes. I particularly remember not getting very far in DKC1 so I would play my cousin's completed file and I would get stomped by K. Rool, especially with the Kredits - I finally beat him later on my own copy. He's goofy but threatening, and even back in the days of SNES, showed loads of personality through his animations and attacks. His DKC2 battle is especially iconic and brutal. Him and the Kremlings were a core part of the DKC series,

I always liked K. Rool but I sorta took him for granted. I didn't even realize how much I missed him until he and the Kremlings were gone in DKCR. I was able to look past it for one game, but them not returning in Tropical Freeze really bummed me out. After Diddy got in Brawl, K. Rool was always the most logical addition for the next DK character, and would offer something no other character quite could. The longer he was gone the more I ended up wanting him; it became about more than just wanting the character in the game. It was about bringing the character back, through Smash. I hope it comes to pass.

For me...I don't really know.

I've never played too many platformers in general. My only Mario main-series game was Super Mario Land, and nothing for DK. I got DK64 bundled with my N64 way back when and I played for a bit, but I never really got the hang of it. Farthest I got was Frantic Factory since I couldn't figure out Mad Jack. Ended up putting it aside for ages.

And then Sm4sh speculation came around, and I started lurking on this new site I found with Smash forums. Ended up at the Ridley and K.Rool threads, and I made an account to start supporting them. It was mostly the arguments that people made here that got me on board with the two of them, even though I never played either series. It even got me to dig my old N64 out of storage to have another go at it. Still didn't finish since I couldn't get through the arcade game.

Now, I see K.Rool as the only major villain that Smash still hasn't added. I like having villains around, so it'd be great to have him along finally. This speculation season has gotten me to finally finish DK64 in its entirety. I would like more DK64 content in Smash now that I've finally seen it all.

Here's hoping guys! Happy 100th!

Yeah, considering how well he did on the ballot, or at least what we think we know how well he did.

I remember playing Donkey Kong Country at my local school back then (forgot what age I was), and I loved the game, and I liked K. Rool, not at much as now, but still. My liking for K. Rool grew over time. I would soon play DKC2 and DKC3, and I loved the games so much as well as how K. Rool was in those games. I liked how he was k. rool, pun entirely intended, and I liked his original design, and that he wanted to steal bananas from Donkey Kong for whatever reason. He was such a fun boss to play against in all three games, Later, I learned more about his personality, and learning it made me like him even more. I find him to be one of the best villains to this day in the World of Nintendo, and that is why I like him.

Minor nitpick, but Ike's new voice is Greg Chun, his VA from Heroes. Jason Adkins was Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn/Code Name: S.T.E.A.M./Fates/Old Smash Ike. :p
Ah gotcha, then I guess I should say his *new* voice actor. There's an awful lot of Ike love in this game. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I would be curious to know exactly how Sakurai would manage his move set and looks. I know there is a lot of speculation on moves coming from the first three Country games (which is hopefully what we will get. But not a whole lot of moves from things like that DK swing game or the barrel racing game. I mean I could see the swinging thing as an up B and the barrel he rode in as a side B similar to Villagers.

I am very curious to see how Sakurai would implement him overall.

The worst ? Something like what he said with Ridley. I always though that this justification was really, REALLY lame. I mean, come on, making a character smaller is really that hard ? And the whole "it wouldn't be him anymore" was just not acceptable. The guy made WII Fit Trainer; ROB and Duck Hunt Dog playable but can't make Ridley playable ? Come on, it must be a joke. And when i see what Ridley is today, i just want to say "See ? It wasn't that hard to make him playable".
So, with K Rool, i would definitely hate that kind of lame excuse. I would prefer something like "F**k him, i don't like this character" since it would be honest.

When I was 5, in 2002, i bought my first console, the Gamecube. My parents had a PS1 but that wasn't 100% my property. And my first Gamecube's game was Super Smash Bros Melee, i played it countless hours ! Since I was a kid, I had some strange beliefs, one of them was that trophies were in fact playable characters that you had to unlock (playable characters had their trophies, so every trophy is a playable character). One day, i saw the King K. Rool trophy and i instantly loved him. I always loved villains and I was a huge Bowser's fan at the time. So, this huge reptile with a big crown became one of my favorite. I couldn't wait to unlock him. But of course, it never happened...

I've been waiting to play K Rool in Smash for 16 years, more than 75% of my entire life. Since the very first time i saw him, i love him, he has the total package for a villain. And after 16 years, i'm pretty sure that I'll can finally play as him in Super Smash Bros.

I’m not picky about K. Rool’s voice but if it were up to me I think I would give him crocodile sounds with the Kremling “BWAH!” as his KO sound.

Interviewer: You've done such a wonderful job adding as many Nintendo All-Stars as possible. You've even added the fan favorite, Ridley, into the battle! But now I must ask. Where's King K. Rool? Have you ever considered adding him into Smash Bros?

Sakurai: [Laughs] Ah, yes, we have looked into King K. Rool in the past. As you know, I always prioritize a characters moveset potential before anything else and I couldn't find anything that would make him unique.

Interviewer: He's appeared in many games in the past. Surely he must have some interesting material you could pull from. Did you ever get the chance to play any of those titles?

Sakurai: I played the original DKC recently as a potential reference to use for his moveset and couldn't find anything that could make him stand out. All he does is throw a crown and run around. So then I played DK64 for additional material and noticed he becomes a boxer.

Interviewer: At the end of the game, correct?

Sakurai: Yes. Of course, we already have Little Mac as the boxer type character, so that'd leave no room for anything for K. Rool, so I decided to drop the idea.

Interviewer: So no crocodiles this time?

Sakurai: No crocodiles this time. At least not in this iteration of the game.

Anyone knows if Bowser and DK are keeping their animalistic voices yet again? With the emphasis on a more expressive DK and since I haven't seen any gameplay video where you can hear them yet. Maybe they will get new voices and K. Rool with get his more human-like voice too? Probably not and I just haven't paid enough attention.

Honestly, I never thought about it until now. I suppose it all started when I was a child...

I started playing video games pretty early, pretty much at 3 years old, though I definitely couldn't play well at the time. I was born in '99, but the past few generations of consoles were owned because of my older sister, so I had access to some classics I otherwise wouldn't have played till I had the sense myself to try them. Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 mostly, though with a little bit of 3, were some of the first games I played along with Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, and Mega Man 4 most notably. So, naturally, those games found a special place in my heart. Crocodilians have always been some of my favorite animals and I guess playing one of the Donkey Kong games at some point past that led me to the realization that the Kremlings were "cool." So, King K. Rool became probably my favorite video game villain. He keeps things original and interesting unlike characters like Bowser and he's a good challenge in all of his boss fights and rewatching some of the cartoon episodes now, I love his sarcastic wit in that. Frankly, I'd perfectly alright if they brought back Benedict Campbell to voice him in Smash.

I'm personally not too picky on K. Rool's voice in the game. If he uses crocodile sounds or anything of that sort then I'd be fine with it. However, I really, really want them to add the "Aughh!" sound when he's thrown (or SD's) in the blast zone. I need this!

I haven't played as DK for a while in Smash

Does he not use his DKCR voice?

I figured they would have done that.

The Donkey Kong series held a special place in my heart ever since I was a child. When I was young, my brother and I had to go to our aunt's house for a day because our sisters were having their friends over at the house or something. One of the things that we did was that we played the Nintendo 64 that my aunt owned, which we played Donkey Kong 64 with her on multiplayer mode. This is the first time that I've ever even played a video game, so it is up there in the list of my favorite games. My brother and I had fun as we slapped each other off of the stage, never knowing who would win the match.

When I was at one of my uncles' house, my brother and I saw that our cousin had a Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64, which he had Donkey Kong Country as one of the SNES games and DK64 as one of the 64 games. Later on that day, we were actually given those consoles and plethora of games because our cousin never played them anymore. I was finally able to play the game that I had played at my aunt's house for myself and got immersed with the worlds and characters that were in the game.

One of the characters that especially stood out to me was King K. Rool himself, as his artwork made him look so malicious with his intent to destroy DK Isle looming over my head. I played Donkey Kong County many times in my childhood, though I never actually beat the game. I never faced King K. Rool until after playing on a file that my friend had beaten when I let him borrow the game in 8th grade. As if facing him in DK 64 was difficult enough, King K. Rool in DKC1 is a monster to fight. The cannonballs from the sky killed me every time I tried to one-up his moves.

Overall, King K. Rool has been a character that I am most fond of from my childhood. His character design, his personality, and his moves were all what made me a big fan of him, and fighting him is always a great experience in the Donkey Kong Country series. I hope that one day, the king makes a victorious komeback.

K Rool is pretty iconic in how he sounds, I don't think they'll change from the grunt noises he makes. (Unless they want to go full DK64, oh no please don't.)

I've loved K. Rool most of my life. But his long absence has made me realize just how much I truly love him. I miss him, damn it.

And I will celebrate with King K. Rool / Ship Deck 2 of course <3

EDIT: 100 pages? Wow cool!

Back in the day, when my dad and an acquaintance of his were still in good terms with each other, me and my parents would visit his house, and his son had a SNES in the basement. Seeing him play the games on it was cool enough, but DKC in particular was special. It was a bit unusual to see the mysterious figure/final boss in the manual turn out to be a round guy that sounded like Krusha, but that particular game is what encouraged me to want a SNES as my first gaming console. Sure enough, I got the SNES packed-in with DKC as my '94 birthday gift, and i still own the cart and manual to this day. I later received and played DKC2 (formerly owned by my late gamer uncle) and DKC3, as well as DK64. Some things I like about K. Rool is his willingness to use a different guise in every major appearance, and just plain refusing to stay down, resulting in long, epic final showdowns. He also has his best moments when he has enough time to prepare elaborate plans, showing off his maniacal mastermind side.

While the Snowmads and Lord Frederik made up for him not being around in the Retro DKCs so far, it still would be good to have him return (pray for Retro to still be alive).

Interviewer: "It really seems like you've gone out of your way to please all the fans with Smash Ultimate, so I have to ask: Why didn't you add King K. Rool?"

Sakurai: "Who?"

Kind of a long story. My brother, my cousins, and I played through all three DKC games on the SNES way back when; they were (and are) some of my favorite games of all time, and I always loved the final challenge that King K. Rool presented.* When they switched to the Paon design years later, I thought it was kind of a downgrade from the original, but I didn't really mind too much. When DKCR came out, though, I thought the King's total absence really dragged down the quality of the entire experience.

Then when Tropical Freeze came out on Wii U, I was upset to find that the Kremlings still hadn't returned. My grandma happened to see me playing Tropical Freeze and asked, "Is that Donkey Kong? I remember you used to play Donkey Kong when you were little." On a whim, I asked her if she remembered the crocodiles; she didn't. So I explained to her how the older games had had the Kremlings, how King K. Rool was one of the most fun villains ever, and how I had been waiting for his return for years. We chatted about it for a bit, and for a while it was a bit of an inside joke between the two of us that we would reference every now and then. As time passed, though, it became something that we really bonded over - especially when Smash 4 came out (we were both disappointed that the King didn't make the cut) and when the Smash Ballot was announced. (We both voted. Several times. We were heartbroken again.)

Ever since then - for about the last four years or so - I've been on the lookout for any crocodile-related news. I've promised to keep my grandma updated as soon as I hear anything. (I have a few other friends who are K. Rool fans as well, and they all know that if there's ever any news, my grandma will hear about it before they do.) I've called her after pretty much every Nintendo Direct for the last few years, and she always asks, "Any news?" And I always have to respond, "No news yet," or "Well, there's a K. Rool street sign, so that's sorta news," or something like that, which is always frustrating. So at this point, while I do want K. Rool to be added because I think he's a hilarious villain with stellar moveset potential whose return would give the DK franchise a nice shot in the arm, by far the biggest reason I want him back is because I really, really want to call my grandma and say, "I have good news."

*There was actually a time when I hated King K. Rool because of his appearance as the final boss of Donkey Kong Land. I got so frustrated after countless failed attempts at beating him that I threw my Game Boy - the original big gray one - at the wall, permanently breaking off the cover of the battery compartment. (The Game Boy still worked, but I had to use tape to hold in the batteries.) It wasn't until a year or two ago that I finally managed to beat him in the Virtual Console version, and I gotta say, avenging my original Game Boy was pretty cathartic. So that could also be part of the reason he's stuck with me for so long.

I went into Smash Wii U and took some pictures of the stretched crotch-and-leg area of the K. Rool costume, to demonstrate the drop in quality I was telling True Blue Warrior True Blue Warrior about. I think this bodes well for the theory that the costume was pulled from a full 3D model hidden away somewhere, rather than being designed exclusively for the Miis' bodies.

Worst reason, like his reasoning to not include Adventure mode in Smash 4.

Yeah, come on, I think we need to give it a rest with the leaks. If there's any one that's real, we'll hear about it. Let's put the magnifying glasses, the incense, the telescopes, and dog whisperers away for a bit. Almost all if not all are fake.

Also good rule of thumb for image leaks including K. Rool.

The real Smash team WON'T use Paon K. Rool. Never ever ever ever. We can be sure of that since seeing Rare K. Rool revived for the Mii costume.

And using a model that ISN'T Paon K. Rool, whether that's Rare K. Rool or some sort of new synthesised design, would take a huge amount of effort by fakers. It's an easy way to weed out the fakes (which are basically all of them).

Now back to K. Rool's crotch.

I think a big reason why the team wouldn't use Paon is that Mr. Sakurai has gone on record saying he doesn't like how non-threatening Bowser's new design is, that's why his models look much scarier in Smash. Same probably rings true for K. Rool.

Just a regular day in the K. Rool thread lookin' at K. Rool's crotch seams. We're investigating his model, we swear.

I kinda hope K. Rool faces the screen during the slow-mo zoom-in on knockout attacks.
