Sorry that was my fault. It's more than a paragraph. I meant to include a "read more" tag, but I put a "page break" instead. I'm really sorry!
I did think for a while I was just missing it and being incredibly stupid/blind. No worries either way.

I remember when people though K. Rool and Dixie were guaranteed during roster speculation
Oh yeah. "If Fire Emblem can get four characters, surely Donkey Kong can too! They would never add four to Fire Emblem and NOT to Donkey Kong." To think we once held the Smash team to higher standards...

I'll respond to the article in a bit, once I'm off mobile. Short answer, it's mostly good, just with a few reached that need addressing.

While I do think certain franchises are underrepresented, Fire Emblem Awakening was a pretty big hit for the series, with future Fire Emblem games looking even more promising. For instance, Fates has introduced interesting characters like Kamui, who has a stat boosting Yatogami and the ability to turn into a dragon... deer thing. (Seriously, I dare you to tell me that a Fire Emblem character with a bestial transformation wouldn't be awesome in Smash.), and Azura, who uses lances and water magic to fight. Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem has some cool looking characters as well. Itsuki is seen with Chroms royal rapier, as well as using magic, using his friends for dual attacks, and even summoning mirage Chrom for dual sword wielding attacks. Fire Emblem is quickly becoming a notable series in the west and in other regions. It makes sense that the Smash team wanted in represented.

After the article on the previous page, I realized how mad I would be if Cranky Final Smash (if he was playable) wasn't transforming himself in his younger self to shoot barrels at people.

We have like 5 Characters who's Final Smash consits of turning into some powerfull being.Nothing new to me.
Right, but like as part of their normal, not Final Smash moveset. In Fire Emblem: Awakening, I fell in love with the Taguel race. Obviously, a Taguel in Smash is probably not happening, but could you imagine a moveset with Smashes and tilts involving kicking and headbutting as a large battle rabbit as your other moves involved things like lances and bows in a human form?

Then let's cut Diddy and add 3 more Fire Emblem Characters in the next Smash!
Because, you know, DK doesn't need that many characters in Smash because it doesn't add thousands of characters to the series with each installment!

Seriously though, with the changing characters each Fire Emblem installment it should be harder* for it to get characters in Smash, in my opinion. Or at least, it should be easier for series with iconic and important characters throughout the series.

*harder as in "The character has to be very unique, popular, well known and has to be a main character".

Hey, I openly admitted that some series are under represented, and I was just giving a reason for the Fire Emblem insurgency. nevertheless, you make a good point as well.

So, my analysis...

--Positives are basically all accounted for, not that they're difficult to see at this point.

--The encouragement to not call K. Rool a lock is something that's been echoed in here, where the straw poll by @ StormC StormC indicated we think he's more likely than not, but not a shoo-in. Calling him the latter is an invitation for complacency, to not keep getting out the vote, which would be really bad.

--I don't feel the need to argue the point on Dixie being "unquestionably" more important, but let's just leave it at it not being unquestionable at all, even before K. Rool has returned to boot.

--I see Dixie as having reasonable odds due to moderate support, the possible desire to have at least one female DLC character and the ease of work. That said, the article's proposed scenario of the team outright selecting her over K. Rool comes off as a stretch. It proposes that Sakurai would care enough about the fans' desire for a DK character to include one, but not the one getting the lion's share of the votes. If the two were neck and neck, maybe, but there's Isaac, Inklings, Paper Mario, Krystal, Chibi-Robo and others potentially dividing the two. Dixie doesn't pole-vault over the rest of the competition by virtue of sharing an icon with the most voted Nintendo newcomer.

--What's more, if you whittle down K. Rool to labels, he's also a beneficiary of the fans demanding more villains and more heavyweights en masse. And it's not as though Sakurai's going to read that and throw in King Hippo or Porky instead (maybe Hades though for obvious reasons :troll:).

--The article got me thinking about the utter lack of content from any DKC sequel in Smash...the only thing we have now is Bramble Blast (which was a fan suggestion on the Brawl ballot) IIRC. It's a good thing Namco is onboard now, what with their obvious DKC fandom (Swanky Kong and Barnacle Bear cameos in spinoffs! The Kritters' DK64 headbang in Smash Run!), or else K. Rool might have to be cut down to just what he uses in the original DKC and 64.

Yes, of course. The part you quoted was just, hopefully obvious, strong sarcasm.
I don't really consider FE "over represented" either.
Just compared to other series, it has a lot, which is "a little" unsatisfying, for a lot of people.

On another note, only 4 out of 19 series, being represented in Brawl already, got new characters.
With these being the two big money makers Mario and Pokémon, and also Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem.
And all of them got multiple characters:
  • Mario - Rosalina, Bowser Jr., (Melee veteran) Dr. Mario
  • Pokémon - Greninja, (Melee veteran) Mewtwo
  • Kid Icarus - Palutena, (Clone character) Dark Pit
  • Fire Emblem - Robin, (Clone character) Lucina, (Melee veteran) Roy
This is 10 characters not being in Brawl for 4 franchises.
I don't know about you, but I wouldn't consider this really good "balancing" among the franchises.
Not to mention that Star Fox, Ice Climbers (if you count them) and, before Lucas' return, Earthbound went down one character.

The most popular franchises already were in Smash, and you're probably only able really like the newcomer section (third-parties not included), if you are a giant fan of one of those four franchises.
(Animal Crossing and Punch-Out!! are probably the only others you could consider one of the more popular ones. [Okay, Wii Fit sold VERY well, but you know what I mean.])

Who'd ever think Sceptile was a lock? I mean he's my favorite Hoenn starter and would love to see him in, if only to add a 3rd gen rep and complete the starter element trifecta. But he'd be a pipe dream at best.

I wonder when, during Smash's lifetime, that characters get in on the merits of filling quotas.

I mean sure, K. Rool fills a whole bunch of quotas, but he lacks some as well.

Sceptile was something completely fabricated exclusively by fans for 2 things: 1) To "balance" out the fact :4charizard: & :4greninja: are in, and 2) The at-the-time hype of Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.

Not once did Nintendo or Sakurai hint at a Grass starter being in the game

It's tough to think of a character with any remotely notable profile that people weren't calling a lock at some point or another. Most of them are due to the whole "new game = shoo-in" stupidity that, judging by a lot of threads I've seen, still hasn't dissipated. You'd think Chrom would've shot this down a long time ago.

Even further down the road...

sadly I don't have that game, SNES games are hard to find where i live, because there are only two stores that sell them.
my games are:
Super Mario World (duh)
Street Fighter II Turbo
Mortal Kombat II
NHL 94 (don't ask)
Claytfighter
F-Zero
Star Fox
Lester the Unlikely
Shaq - Fu (again don't ask)
Zombie's Ate My Meighbors
King of the Monsters (it's not Godzilla unfortunately)
Arcade Classics
Killer Insticst (which is broken because it carried to much dust, because my Dad didn't want me to play it)

Smash 4 seemed like an attempt to add as many additional franchises to the game as possible. We have :4duckhunt::4littlemac::4megaman::4pacman::4ryu::4shulk::4villager::4wiifit: who franchises have only one character. While not a bad idea in itself, most veteran franshises did suffer as a result. :4lucas: only remedies this slightly.

Mario are Pokémon are justifiable given their widespread appeal. Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus were both lucky, and in both cases, it seems to be an attempt to cash on the new-found popularity and the rather unexpected success of Awakening and Uprising. I won't be surprised if :4lucina: and :4darkpit: get reduced to costumes in the future.

Well to be fair...Chrom did almost make it in..... Yeah he didn't actually make it in at the end of the day, but he was very close. But yeah, new game = shoo-in has never been a major deciding factor in Smash character selection. It's more about uniqueness of the character (the reason why Chrom got cut in the end), mixed with popularity and notoriety while taking out the characters that would upset the game balance, or have major issues against them like using real-life guns or based on copyrighted materials (Why Sukapon got cut as an item in Melee). Having a new game, or being in a new game just gives preference, but it doesn't make the selection as far as I know.

I do have to wonder if K. Rool was in DKCR, would he have been prioritized by the dev team and put in instead of one of the characters we have now?

If so, maybe :4bowserjr: would be cut since he was already almost cut anyway and their playstyles would have overlap.

On a similar note, the hypothetical I was wondering was "What if the fans didn't despise the Tikis in Returns?" It's a common theory that Retro has no issue with Kremlings, but wanted to make a quality enemy group first and tried again with Snowmads after the Tikis were so widely panned. If fans liked the Tikis, maybe Tropical Freeze would've had Kremlings instead, which would be a big game-changer (down to the game probably not being called Tropical Freeze for starters, unless K. Rool donned a Santa costume or something).

Hard to say. :4bowserjr: is a Mario character and had grown significantly in the Wii and DS era, having central roles in almost all Mario games.

It's hard to say if the majority of fans OPPOSED the tikis all a round 100% dark pit status, but what I do know is if the tikis were LOVED beyond belief by the fans they may have returned in Tf. In theory.

ooh for the next dlc for smash i am HOPING we get k rool, another kong, or both.
if the mario series can have: mario, luigi, bowser, bowser jr, rosalina, and peach, as well as some from the expanded mario universe that counts as seperate reps... surely it wouldnt be unreasonable for k. rool and dixie kong to get in. maybe another stage... (somewhere on crocodile isle cough cough) would be nice too.
