Until today, I had no idea that it was possible to view the sprites as anything other than eggs.

Don't follow you but it doesn't seem like anybody else has addressed this question: K. Rool is still leading the charge on newcomers worldwide and most agree him to be the most likely newcomer from the ballot, especially with Sakurai emphasizing that it will be focused on fanservice (with the implication that they've already started work on ballot characters meaning we could see him sooner than later). Whether or not Wolf will be from the ballot too or pre-planned is up to debate, but Wolf is the only (plausible) character requested more than Rool.

Also he got Smashified if you didn't see that.

If the team were to go with K. Rool, would he make the effort to speak to Steve Mayles, who's currently working at Playtonic? I'm sure Steve would love to help, but what with the pretty poor effort that seems to have been put out in working with Retro overseas, it's him getting a call period that seems in question.

It could happen. Playtonic is it's own company now, with no competition to Nintendo. And, simply going to him would look good for both companies. Playtonic would have a role in FREAKING SMASH BROS., thus bolstering their already impressive rep, and Nintendo would look like that cool company that reaches out to third party independent companies for help with characters.

Only if he did the same with Diddy, which I highly doubt.

About 2-3 weeks ago, basically said that & were pre-ballot choices due to their demand and popularity (basically assuring ) and... almost as a counter-balance to the surprise of , said that there will be "Only" "Several" characters to come and it would be pure fanservice from here.

I just had a thought about the original DKC and Returns. Now, we all know when K. Rool first stole the bananas from Donkey Kong, right? Well, it was never explained why he did so, but in Donkey Kong Country Returns, those evil Tikis stole Donkey Kong's bananas because they had special properties that allowed them to make more living Tikis. Now, call me crazy, but do you guys think K. Rool stole Donkey Kong's bananas in Donkey Kong Country because he knew of their special properties and wanted to use them for some kind of purpose of his own? Yes, we have yet to see the bananas do more than make more Tikis, but anything is possible. You never know.

Snake uses his game over theme as his victory theme in Brawl and technically Donkey Kong's failure is a success to K Rool.

I'd prefer this as his Victory Theme though.

Maybe a bit more upbeat though, it is a victory.

I think he took your 'no one as authority on him' line differently, as in 'no one owns his rights'.

And yes. I meant, his rights are certainly owned, but no one can take responsibility on making sure that he is portrayed the 'right' way.
On the plus side, this is all the more reason that the ballot helps him. The fans are the authority on what they want to see.

To be fair, I don't think this is really something to worry about. Diddy and DK are very faithful to their Rare era appearances in Smash 4, and I don't see why K. Rool would be any different.

So why does this affect K. Rool and not Diddy, who was put in Brawl years after Rare left Nintendo?

The point I was making is Diddy's original creator was no longer around during Brawl's development period, but it clearly didn't affect him getting in and I seriously doubt Sakurai sent an e-mail to Rare about Diddy during Brawl's development.
