Actually, to go into further though on that angle in regards to the vote DLC character, I think we may get 2-3, with the first being announced at E3, because A) this thing lasts 6 months and B) Lucas comes out in June(which also makes me think the Wolf reveal is more likely too)
By spreading it out they can gage the votes better, start development earlier, start prototype work on the other front runners, thus speeding up release. Add to that by announcing the first one at E3 they create a bigger hype, and assure the fans that they are being listened too, allow fans to vote for more than just one of their favorite characters, and would allow them to show some of the current top rankings. A Campaign like this requires awareness to be effective, and in order to do that you need to be able to support not just one group of fans, but many of them, and more characters makes that easier to achieve

I agree with this idea of how Nintendo's going to do their characters. This means we just need to keep up or King K. Rool voting consistently. I've voted twice, retweeted and favorited everything I can on Twitter. So I'm really trying to help K. Rool have the best chance of copping a spot in Sm4sh!

The way I look at this, it's not so much about "beating XYZ other candidates," but about pushing K. Rool as high as possible, above a certain threshold to where he stands out as an option. Because @Epic Neal Time is right, a lot of candidates who could potentially score higher are going to be ignored. . .Goku, obviously, Ridley, unfortunately, most if not all third parties, and maybe even Wolf and the ICs, who are 100% already planned (the latter only if their issues get worked out, though).

That leaves a small handful, many of whom will split votes amongst each other, with even fewer standing out above that. If we're persistent and a bit lucky, K. Rool will be one of them.

Mr. Grant Kirkhope was kind enough to RT the poll to his 32.5K followers on Twitter this morning, so that should certainly prove beneficial.

Dixie is NOT K. Rool's competition, at all. There are way more Rool supporters.

And the only flaw in your above statement is that Snake does have a chance to come back. That's what the ballot is for. And with Snake being one of the most popular, being just above the King himself at number 5 and Just behind Wolf at 3, in both Japan and America means his chances are looking better than they were before thanks to the ballot.
How do you know these placements? were the results of some japanese poll posted?

Put in my vote, and here's the reasons I put in as to WHY.

"There's a lack a villains, heavy-weights, and Donkey Kong representation. King K. Rool fulfills ALL these factors and MORE. With his varied personas, his moveset would be easy to conceptualize, and could bring so much uniqueness and variety to the Smash table. He has legions of loyal fans, and would make many happy with his appearance. There is no better choice. It's time for King K. Rool's finest hour!"

We're gonna take the poll by storm fellow Kutthroats, and as always:

Being able to vote multiple times doesn't mean anything. Just because you CAN vote multiple times doesn't mean they all count. As I've heard, the Japanese site even explicitly states that only one vote will count.
I haven't seen any proof of this anywhere. Just a lot of speculation. In anycase, concerning the Japanese site (originally from the leak thread) :

Quick translation:

Important Points:
Limit one vote per person
We will use your vote in consideration for characters, etc within this game, and also future titles.
You authorize Nintendo, Sora and Bandai Namco to use the information.
Within range to achieve the goal of this poll, we may ask another company to handle the data.**
There is a possibility that your name, age, gender along with the contents of your submission be published on this website.

**It sounds like they might ask another company to get rid of all the Goku votes.
Per person, not per computer. Doesn't seem all that different from what we got.

By person they likely mean computer because you could have one sad guy sitting at his computer spamming votes for Goku under loads of different names.

I've heard somewhere that Sakurai decides characters based on how they "Dance in his mind".

So basically, we need to write something that might help him visualise a moveset.

I, for example, wrote about how he could use polluting gasses to trap the opponent.

This is my exact line of thinking as well. The way I look at it, if the top five looked something like this...

#1 Goku
#2 Wolf
#3 Shrek
#4 King K. Rool
#5 Snake

it will actually look like this:

#1 Wolf
#2 King K. Rool
#3 ICs
#4 Roy
#5 Pichu

The more votes that are wasted on things like non-video game characters or 3rd parties (with Kojima falling out with Konami I feel for Snake ): ), the less K. Rool needs to worry about being pushed too far down the most-wanted. This really is the time for him to shine, as well as the core groups who support him.

I'd even argue that IC's, Roy, and Pichu would be thrown out too. IC's because they can't be done on 3DS (if they get significantly high votes Sakurai might consider trying to get them working again), Roy because we already have two Marth's, and Pichu because Pichu's kinda pointless.

Well, i'm convinced, Wolf will probably come either way, so it's time to Kroc the vote!

And yet we still have Jigglypuff.

There is one character who's definitely "competing with K. Rool," mind you.

I'll give you the ICs, but Roy and Pichu... Pichu has been showing up surprisingly often in the top 10 these days, especially in Japan. And Roy has had a pretty consistent fanbase since his cut. Not sure if he'd end up still being a Marth clone or not, but as far as those two are concerned, does this look like the face of a man ready to work on five totally new characters?

I feel he'll cut some corners and throw in some veterans when he has the chance, if only because they're fairly popular and are a little less labor intensive due to pre-existing assets/established movesets.

I think the other characters that will be popular are Isaac, Snake, Wolf, Roy and maybe Dixie. I think any troll character like Goku or someone that already has an existing role (Ridley, Waluigi, Takamaru etc.) will be discounted. We have a pretty good chance.

Roy and Pichu would not be changed much at all if they were added. Look at Lucas. Look at Mewtwo. Look at Ganondorf.

Mewtwo and Ganondorf especially should've gotten a more significant overhaul, but did not.

If they weren't prepared to create a number of additional newcomers, they wouldn't have had a vote in the first place. Returning characters will NOT get heavy changes, PERIOD. It has not happened and it will not happen. What makes you think it'll suddenly happen with Roy?

Pichu is decently requested in Japan, but that's it. Pichu is probably more likely than Roy, but even then I don't think it'll happen because Pichu was widely hated in Melee.

Honestly though Ice Climbers, Pichu and Roy, much like ridley, chrom, daisy, and other third parties seem like non contenders as well. We already know IC's won't get in. Roy won't make it in with a revamped moveset, and they won't be putting in 3 marths. Ridley and Chrom are already in the game in major roles so that mostly eliminates their chances.

I feel K. Rool and Wolf are almost sure bets but I;m not sure that any other veteran, especially Pichu or the ICs are very likely regardless of how many votes they get.

I only feel like Wolf is the only other veteran that can return, The rest would have to be Newcomers.

Guys i have quite good news!
the german youtuber Domtendo has 400k subscribers and just said in a news video that people should vote for K Rool and/ or Dixie.
I think this can only help us.

Wolf seems to be the only likely veteran returning, unless they make Roy come back as well (being an almost complete clone has its benefits for time constraints). The only two people I want as newcomers at this point is Isaac and King K. Rool.

Wasn't there something about Namco-Bandai employees voting for what characters they'd like to see in SSB4 and K. Rool was really high on their list? (#2 IIRC).

Regardless, this is our chance, mates! I think the Kroc has a great chance to make it in...get out there and #KrocTheVote!

I have mild faith in Roy possibly being changed due to the existence of Lucina as the Marth clone, and long-time veteran Bowser getting a drastic overhaul. Sakurai's a smart guy. He'd work something out if the demand is strong.

On another note, very recently got DKC Tropical Freeze as my Club Nintendo Platinum reward~ Sits on the Wii U main menu alongside DKCs 1, 2, and 3. So nostalgic. Looking forward to trying it out later :4dk:

I get the feeling Lucas and Wolf were being worked on as Smash was in development but they ran out of time to complete them so they left them on the side for the time being. I have no doubt that when Starfox U is revealed at E3 they show Wolf returning in the same manner as Lucas, so I'm sure he's being excluded from the voting. If the Ice Climbers become a New 3DS exclusive we could theoretically see them return as well, but that's a long shot.

Its also obvious characters already in the game as assist trophies or bosses have no chance of being considered to be playable, so the people wasting their votes on characters like Ridley, Dark Samus, Girahim, Midna, Waluigi, etc. isn't going to happen. I also doubt any third party characters will be considered either.

Given the sheer love Nintendo has shown Donkey Kong recently with the Donkey Kong Country trilogy returning to the Virtual Console and Donkey Kong 64 finally making its debut (DK64 was never on the Wii virtual console), I would be very surprised not to see one new DK rep.

I think Captain Toad and a Splatoon character will be saved for the next Smash though. There will likely be one new Mario rep in every Smash and Captain Toad is really the only obvious choice left. I also think Nintendo is waiting to see if Splatoon is a sales success before considering a playable character.

I would not go to the length to say that characters as AT's have NO chance of happening. If an AT got overwhelming support I think Sakurai might considering promoting them to playable. But only if they got overwhelming support. So the chance is iffy but doable. However, bosses are probably a definite no-go, especially Ridley (sadly).

Characters like Wolf and especially Roy would be A LOT more easier to make than a Newcomer, so maybe Sakurai separates the veterans from the Newcomers, because of workload.
Among Newcomers, King K. Rool is definitely at least top 3. I can only think of Isaac and Dixie coming close (and Ridley but I'm not sure how that'll be handled).
I'd say it's
- King K. Rool
- Isaac
- Dixie

Ridley, though, has several forms. If people are voting for Super Metroid Ridley it MIGHT actually count. I'd still say King K. Rool is getting more votes because of the amount of people that don't think Ridley is possible.

After checking that mega Smash poll I have little doubt K. Rool will win. While K. Rool's chances of being DLC were low, he was still in the top 5 on that graph specifically and with the Smash Ballot, many of those people are most likely going to vote him in. Also, he only ranked lower to the cut vets and Banjo Kazooie duo (Which is a major third party who I think will never happen).

My predication

1. King K. Rool
2. Shovel Knight
3. Inkling
4. Isaac
5. Dixie Kong

I also cannot see Inlking being a thing, it has yet to be released and Nintendo probably wouldn't waste development time on a character from a franchise that has yet to prove itself. Shovel Knight? He's third party right? I can see him happening but only slightly.

See, the thing is, I don't think it matters if Isaac maintains it steady with K. Rool. There'd need to be several characters to compete with K. Rool to be a problem, because odds are this poll isn't going to result in JUST one DLC character.
That's fair, and you're probably right considering it'd be a good resource to just pull DLC characters from.

However, being paranoid as ****, I'm going to carry on as if only one'll get chosen, otherwise I'll relax too much about the polls and some random a-hole will win, hah!

I don't know I find it unlikely. A lot of the assist trophies we got were actually popular characters people wanted playable, (like Dark Samus, or Midna/Girahim, Waluigi, Majora's Mask, etc.), so if Sakurai didn't bother with them the first time around I doubt he will now.

I think Isaac being removed from an Assist trophy on the other hand makes him a possible candidate for DLC. Its very suspicious to see Isaac removed in comparison.
