Can't Nintendo just buy "New Rare" and fuse it with Retro Studios? So the studio grows bigger and can handle more projects at once? Say, Donkey Kong and Metroid? DKCR spin-offs to for once in a while? Man... If these developers would work for Nintendo that'd be just as good as getting Rare back!
Well, first off, Playtonic Studios is so new they're untested. Just because they're made up of former Rare employees doesn't mean it'll instantly hit it off. And second of all, Retro Studios is not exclusively tied to the DK franchise. In fact, currently it sounds like their next project isn't supposed to be related to DK or Metroid, the only franchises they've completed games for to date.

Nintendo could in theory buy Playtonic Studios if they think they'll pan out after their first game. But they'd probably keep them their own studio and give them the security to hire more people if they did that, rather than merging them with Rare. And even then I have my doubts Nintendo would even consider it.

It depends how far along he was, and if the ideas they had for his moveset made it into other characters.
That's something I considered. . .other than maybe Jr's cannonball, no other new moves in this game strike me as potential ones scrapped from a K. Rool set.

Why wouldn't it be a wise move for Nintendo? I'd imagine they could have already spoken about their potential future togheter. Merging with Retro Studios just came to mind because it also has former Rare employees for example, and people involved with the SNES DKCs. So I think that'd only be natural that Nintendo would want both studios if they would want to do something grand with Donkey Kong again.

Seriously, losing Rare was bad for Nintendo. If they could re-establish their old DKC team for them to handle the series that would be great for the Wii U's line up. DKCR and Tropical Freeze did greatly, imagine something even bigger.

Or this could be just me looking at this too optimistically.

I don't think K. Rool was ever even considered to be honest. There's nothing to really suggest that he was. You can make a case for Ridley due to his animations, but the only model K. Rool has in the game is just a recycled Wii model.

Hello Kutthroats.

I've recently joined this fine site, and want to be a part of your fine order for the glorious Kremling King. It's been a big wish to see him represented in the game in a glorious fashion!

Anyway, to keep the previously discussed subject alive, it does feel that the DK franchise in general is often quite overlooked in Smash. I can't think of many moves that would reflect a K.Rool moveset (in my opinion) aside from Bowser Jrs. Cannonball.

Ah well, until the files tell their secrets it's gonna be a small mystery.

For the King!

BJ's got something quite claptrap esque too.
You think the Mecha Koopas might have been Klaptraps at one point? Unless their function got revamped midway through development, I dunno if I can envision Klaptraps as tiny, throwing items. The only similarity is in that they're patrolling minions their master places onstage.

I'm not sure. It's plausible that if he got scrapped early (as in, in the process of planning out a moveset for him), that the klaptrap idea was evolved into the Mecha Koopas. I think K. Rool using Klaptraps is fairly plausible.

Just as a thought.

You don't suppose it's possible that Jrs. Side B could have originally been an alteration of K Rools gun slide in DKC2? Probably clutching at straws but they seem quite similar in functionality.

No it seems like a move they'd give anybody to promote Mario Kart. Even though Jr, was ironically absent from that game as well. Could as well have given that move to a character as Toad.

And I still want New Rare to make DKC.

If Retro is gonna run other franchises, DKC is soon forgotten again. I want them to make the series as big as in the SNES days again. And I wouldn't mind a 2.5D or 3D game either.

Haven't they expanded the amount of employees recently? I swear I've heard something about that, So maybe different teams within retro are working on different games. Either way I can't see DK being forgotten again, especially after how well returns did and the praise both it and tropical freeze got

That's why you should always wear protection around that banana, metal in this case. :troll:

I hope that's true, nothing would be better than having a new Metroid and DKCR3 game released in the same year.

You can say that again, although I get the feeling it'll be one or the other and if that is the case I'd rather have a new metroid right now. Maybe they'll just alternate between franchises every couple of years

If anything, that's the likely choice. Though a new Metroid game might be on the way sooner then we think if the Metroid Prime trilogy for Wii is any indication.

Miyamoto says that they're ready to take on 2 projects at a time...

.Miyamoto also stated that he felt Retro Studios are at the point where they can have multiple projects in development at once. Typically, the studio works on one major game at a time.

I don't want New Rare and Retro to become the same company.

I'd rather they both be Nintendo owned yet separate while maybe collaborating at times.

I agree. I still don't necessarily think Nintendo would jump out and try and buy them right away, either, though. They certainly haven't tried buying Camelot (yet, anyway), and Camelot does a lot for Nintendo.

Ideally, Retro would make one more new DKC to close out a trilogy, then Playtonic would step in and make a better successor to DK64 after successfully reviving the genre with their new IP. I think that's about the best case scenario we could hope for.

article said:
So Retro is working on Tropical Freeze. It doesn't have two teams working on two major projects, even though it might be interested in returning to Metroid one day. What, then, is the future of Samus Aran's intergalactic adventures? I turned to Kensuke Tanabe, an Executive Officer at Nintendo, and the man responsible for producing Retro's games, including the Metroid Prime series.

"Basically I’m thinking of, not just Samus, but how we can expand the whole Samus universe," Tanabe said. "You remember Metroid Prime Hunters. I’m thinking about things like how we could make that go out further, with all these different bounty hunters as well."
Old, but...it's something. can Sylux get an actual shot at DLC? Please? :'C

This new Rayman leak is a good sign. If it's true, it could mean that we'll get more DLC characters than just Mewtwo.

It's hard to fake video evidence of a Wii U. I'm leaning more on the true side right now.
But man is Sakurai gonna be mad.

Not nessecarily, if it is real , I would imagine we are getting another Nintendo character or two as well, they would do community/fan favorites like Issac, Ray, Dixie or K.Rool. No way would they dedicate all that time to a third party character from a unreliable publisher without doing some real fan favorites

I'd imagine they'd use it as promotion as well

A new Zelda character
A new Star Fox character
The Inklings
The guy from Code Name STEAM
etc etc

I don't really see it. Because Codename STEAM and Splatoon are coming too soon. I don't think they'll promote a new IP released after Smash came out, unless another game in the franchise is confirmed at a time when DLC is still coming.

Zelda? ONLY if a major character from a past Zelda game appears in Zelda Wii U in a major role. That's the only way I see it happening.

Star Fox? That's a safer bet. DK is also a pretty safe bet due to numerous things that could potentially be in development, and the major DKC candidates are main recurring characters, which is not at all the case for Zelda.

I'm just gonna call it right now, impa is gonna be in Zelda Wii U. She's been in the last 2 major Zelda titles (Skyward Sword and A link between Worlds), Zelda wii u seems to have TONS of Skyward Sword influence and we've already seen what could be references to the sheikah with eye shaped designs on Link's shield. Plus Hyrule Warriors has made her a much more popular character as of late

It's a video of the CSS in action so there's a very high chance it's real.
And Rayman is quite popular though I'd rather have Snake with a Metal Gear REX final smash if we had to have a third party character as DLC.
It's Sakurai/Nintendo. They make weird decisions every other day.

In a MAJOR role. Impa's only real major role in the series is Skyward Sword. And half the time she's an old woman.

Rayman fits better into Smash than Snake honestly.

With that video, non-Mewtwo DLC could very well be a reality. Hopefully our King is DLC too!
