Just because said Sakurai said something like " I don't think we're gonna have leaderboards or rankings". Doesn't mean they won't. Videogame producers change their minds all the time. Strikers Charged has ranking, and I'm sure Sakurai will end up seeing the benifits.

All I'm saying is keep an open mind, because there is certainly a chance of there being rankings.
I don't mean it's a surefire no but come on, Nintendo has NEVER done a serious ranking system, they see it as being elitist. And come on, Strikers Charged is a joke, it's based on how much you play, wtf? Do you seriously expect a good ranking system?

Uhh... Nintendo does have leaderboards and rankings for online DS games through websites on the net, and I'd say that they are pretty good. And strikers charged is really the only online Wii game we've seen, just the fact that Ninty is thinking about rankings and leaderboards is cool with me.

I actually do think that Brawl might have some good rankings. Like I said, just keep an open mind.

If they do, the ones for MPH for DS seem pretty good and work well. Also the fact of voice chat which brawl should have. It is an open mind thought not to be lost. Isn't Wii sports online? And Brawl will be way different from Mario Strikers because it is two different games and genres.

Metroid Prime: Hunters for DS has the best ranking system for DS that I've seen, then comes MKDS.

And I don't think Wii sports is online Creo... if it is that's big news to me.

We don't need no online rankings cause we have tournies. Also

Having a player profile attached to your Mii could be nice though... That thing could track your level (Halo style) and the amount of DC's that you got.

I think that a level system could be good because using a W-L record only promotes DCing. A level 15 could have much more losses than a level 10, but only cause he's been playing against stronger oppostion.

Rankings are really annoying, since they often lead to DCs and all that stuff. If people don't have to worry about getting a loss added to their player card (the horror!), most will only quit when truly necessary (although there'll still be some of those awful "I'm losing, so I'll quit" guys).

Also, going online just to crush random n00bs is completely wrong. If you want to let off some steam and own somebody, then play the game's AI; since going online just to annoy other people is very poor sportmanship.

If you want to train and get better, get some Wii Codes from here and play using the FC mode. If you want to have fun, then go play battle royal 4-player games with items on with the random pairing system. That way, the good players will get better by playing other good players and the bad ones will train with weaker players. If a competitive smasher met a casual player, I don't think the casual guy would gain the skills to be on par with the competitive guy before flinging his controller at the TV screen; getting as good with the game as most of you are is a task that takes time and effort, and that only makes you better than random casual guys at playing competitively. They aren't just dumb losers because they don't know/want to know how to play at competitive level (except for the guys that claim his opponent is cheating).

Anyway, I believe the lack of a rating system would be more helpful than having people quit/play weaker opponents just to give less/get more wins. I'm by no means on par with most competitive smashers, but that doesn't mean I'll just quit when I'm getting owned, since you learn the most from losses (or close wins). If you win, you'll just keep your current play style, but if somebody comes and foils/cripples your game plan, you'll say "I guess I've got to mix it up more...", and will get better at the game.

Enough rambling for now...

How about a winning% alongside the number of wins.
That would work well............

*Dude, that guy there has 500 wins. I only have 10. Oh, wait, He also has 2,000 losses*

id like to see a ranking system. It could be like most online FPS where you can either play ranked matches, or unranked, that way the better players could be paired up against eachother more often and the lower guys as they gain some rank will be challenged and thus get good enough to fight the higher people.

Ranking system would be crap if it's all FFA with items on random stages. We need to petition for customizable matches with random opponents or make all matches with random opponents standard 1v1s.

I dunno, I just hope they have some way of playing people without having to use wii codes. Half the fun of the online is playing against people you dont know and getting to know them. I.E. clans and such. I hope they make a headset too.

What about me? I dont have friends that play smash. I do compete in tourneys but I only can prepare with lvl 1s. I am not saying online will completely replace physical tourneys(but a few online tournaments will be nice :)) But this allows you to play with OTHER smashers outside of your area. I mean, I want to play against Cali, but I can't.

Well, some people (like me) live in areas where the nearest smasher is pretty much a few hour by plane away that I know of. I've searched the internet for a while and I cannot find any tourneys near me. I don't live in the US unfortunately.

It WOULD be tough to find tourneys outside the U.S. Not impossible, but tough.
Thank God, I AM in the U.S.

Seriously guys, don't get your hopes up for a GOOD ranking system. And playing newbs is fun, and it's inevitable in random matches. What's the fun in playing only people you know. I personally can't wait to blow off some steam by WObbling some newbs.

Well... yes and now... some would argue that edge hogging was meant to be when people were both going for the edge and one person happened to "hog" the edge. It doens't mean they expected people to WD off the edge and hardly beat their oppenent to the edge. Don't get the wrong idea, I'm all for it, I'm just saying I'm sure they didn't expect people WDing to grab the edge in a fast manner.
But I think that when they made the programming to not let 2 people grab the edge, they knew, in the bottom of their javascript, that people could use this to kill others, that is the point of the game.. Do you get points in a time battle if someone knocks them off and you edgehog them? If you did, that would be enough proof for some of the noobs.

It would be great if there would be something like a lobby or so and you can open games!
So you can decide the game Mode (1on1,ffa) and even write something like "Noobs/Low Skill" in the game name.
Since the system Mario Strikers uses is really ****ed up.

He was saying that the developers did not forsee WDing being used to edgehog.

Also... they used javascript for smash bros? That isn't sarcastic, I was just wondering because I don't know how they make games.

Nope,they definately did not.
Javascript is some script for websites and maybe also used for small flash games.
But Console-Games are totally different from that and I bet they used a much more difficult script.

Britain, glaring at you **** yanks.
Ummm, 10%? I just don't count the rest of the players as players. I see them more as animals.
Now that is ignorance at it's finest, ladies and gentlemen.

What you are saying, is that when people play a game for a laugh, and to have fun, like it was designed for, they are animals because they aren't playing all 'uber'?

Sorry, but I find that to be one of the most ignorant and stupid things I have ever seen.

There will NOT be rankings. Creator man said so. Probably gonna be friend codes. And there will probably be a post here where everyone posts their friend code. So if you want good people to play, guess where you look?

No joke, but why dont they just make something like in Warcraft if you know what i mean.
That would also be great for people with bad connections because they dont got to be hosts then... (I got Wlan T_T)

The Famous SK, don't even pretend like you know what you're talking about.

Sakurai said: (and I quote)

"an online ranking system is unlikely to be implemented" he said there would be "many hurdles to cross".

That doesn't mean:

"We will not have a ranking system."

In fact, in the same interview later on, Sakurai said wins and losses will most likely be recorded.

So don't pretend like you know everything. Developers change their minds all the time, and I definetly wouldn't be surprised if we saw some type of leaderboard or ranking.

All I'm saying is keep an open mind.

Not to mention that interview was taken waaaay back when. They could've changed their minds a lot since then, they've had a LONG time to think about it, that's for sure. I don't even think they were WORKING on the Online System back then (though i don't know, but it sounded like they weren't). So yah, I'm with you GAW, I wouldn't be surprised to see a LeaderBoard either.

XD I was to lazy to read anything more than the first page and this page... but maaan. You people need to calm down. Talking about crushing people, crushing their dreams, cocky prideful talk, calling noobs animals (at least that's what I got that animal thing from that one post XD). I REALLY think you guys need to take this less seriously. It is, just a game, after all. You didn't win the Nobel Prize (pffft, who wants that anyways XD), you didin't win a million bucks.

It's a game, you have fun. Sure, pro's will probably crush noobs into the dust (i'm a noob, don't own Melee anymore XD), but seeing as how you'll probably need friend codes, that problem is kinda solved, cause you're playing with people you know. Anyways, I just think it's stupid how people say stuff like "OMG, I'm gonna obliterate every noob I see!" (not word for word, but you get the picture =P ). Makes you seem like a kid.

Anyways, as I was saying, don't think we'll have to worry bout the whole Pro's mauling nOObs problem, seeing as how there are Friend Codes. Basically, it's Case Closed right there.

whats the deal here? getting dreams crushed? creating schisms?

you think you're gods or something?

Its a game for goodness sake. I'm sure you all play it as a religion and would easily own a noob who doesn't even know Brawl is a sequel, but does that really make you happier?

Wouldn't it be funner to play someone at your level of skill? Theres a real challenge, a real game. Just going around killing noob (most probably for sense of pride and wanting people to go"OMG I played vs this guy and he owned me bad!" on the web...) isn't really showing your skills.

Heck Brawl will be a great game to get more people involved in Smash, making more challengers and a bigger community.

and like someone else already said, noobs are going to play with other noobs, and more with their close friends, than with online strangers.

It is more fun to play people of your own level, but once in a while it's nice to see how much better you were than before by playing a "casual smasher"
