Best post this topic. Well done. I agree entirely.
It's good to play a game competitively; you'll get better, but if you treat it as a religion, thats just stupid. Some people more than others ( You know who you are).
I dont play the game competetitively. OH FUX NOOB. I dont wavedash or use any other advanced techniques. zOMG NOOB.
I'm only going to be playing online to play my friends, because I dont want to come across some beeyatch who completely owns me, BUT will never let me live it down and keep shouting noob.
I couldn't agree more on some of your points, Caael. However, I do see one problem.
Why do you let it get to you?
If some random dude kicks your *** online, let him be the idiot that yells "GG" or "n00b." His lungs are going to collapse long before yours do. It happens to me all the time when I play FPS's online. I remember playing the Halo 3 Beta and I was in a 2-on-2 match. The other team that this guy and I were playing against were frickin' insane. They took it upon themselves to talk trash the whole **** time, commenting about this kill and that. So when I finally get the first (and only) kill for my side, the guy starts *****ing and moaning about how one of Beta's many problems conspired to knock off his 'toon. I threw a Brute grenade right on him as I died and he tried to brush it off as "The Guardians" killing him (and it was on High Ground, to boot, which has no obstacles). I calmly told him that that was a grenade that killed him and not a glitch in the system (my only words during the whole match). He flips out and goes on a tirade about how much I suck ballz at the game. I just laughed the whole **** time (while the mic was muted, of course; such behavior would be incendiary and I don't like to start fights that often) because he was a god**** idiot for not admitting to one little loss of a life.
And who cares if he posts your name up on a forum and starts ragging on your prowess? I think with Brawl's online that the community is going to be at least three times larger than what it has ever been, so that just expands your level of anonymity to a degree. Also, it's the freakin' Internet. Who honestly cares? Sure, he'll have a group of like-minded buddies waiting to jump your **** but for the most part PEOPLE DON'T CARE THAT MUCH (or they have dissenting opinions that are in contrast to the flamers', thereby bolstering your standing and detracting from theirs).
I did play Smash competitively (recent events in my life keep me from doing so right now, but I'll be dropping by GA's Smash community soon enough), but I've always kept a "laissez-faire" kinda attitude. Of course I go with the intention of winning (by whatever means necessary, mind you; I am not a scrub that plays by "honor" or any of that crap), but I don't get pissed off if I do lose. Some people are better than me, so it falls on me to get good enough to whup their *** (lol). Plain and simple. I look at it like this: If I get good and recognized by the broad community at large, great. If I don't get recognized by the community at large and don't get good, that's fine too. I can live with that.
