this really is bizarre though, by this logic someone sees a speedrun of the next NSMB and doesn't pick it up
It is bizarre, but only for people whose hobbies revolve heavily on video games.

Even with the Wii U, Nintendo is still trying to go for that "casual" demographic. I don't like to make distinctions between "core" gamers and "casual" gamers, because video games are simply becoming part of every day life globally. In 20 years, it's just going to be a thing that people do, same as going to the movies or watching TV. However, we must admit that Nintendo's mentality is all set on money, and the easiest way is to lure in people who don't normally play video games.

Due to the aforementioned reasons, I have mixed feelings about what Nintendo is doing. In a way, they're taking advantage of a simple logistic system to make a lot more money that they would be making if they were to focus on the "core" demographic. On the other hand, they are spreading the use of video games, and it's largely because of Nintendo that the social bias against/between the "geeks" and "normal" people is disappearing. It's finally gotten to the point where the masses are taking in video games and accepting it as a fun daily activity.
So... yeah. Mixed feelings.

Nintendo are just idiots that unnecessarily alienated their hardcore fanbase. Okay.

I think they were just in general more focused in having the player feel like he's really good at the game even if he's not, and have people be unable to prove him wrong. Call of Duty: MW2 does the same thing pretty much.

Idk man, do you think casuals care about their performance so much? Even then, I don't think someone somewhere being better at a game would hamper how I felt about that game.

I think it's unfortunately true that casuals do care a lot. MW2 players are all scrubs that think they're the best. You have Nintendo scrubs disconnecting all the time on games like MPH. etc etc etc

Everyone wants to believe they're good.

....fine then :(
Hahaha.

It's not all negative. You guys here on Smashboards also want to be good, but you guys have harnessed this into a positive thing (hence the community, tournaments, huge character discussions...). We, as humans, all love learning/being the best at patterns. We love technicality and we want to know it all, but I understand Nintendo's view that a lot of information (your competitive scene) can put off players instead of inciting hunger for improvement. Are they taking the best approach? The short answer is no, but hey... I'm just a lonely gamer. I'm not hanging out at the Nintendo conference rooms for a reason. Maybe my body just isn't ready.......

I think it's more of the reverse, no one wants to lose
That is also true, but at the completion of an uneven game (most games) someone must necessarily lose. The gamer then decides to continue playing because he thinks he has a likely chance of winning the next game.

I wouldn't call it "the reverse", since they're both so closely related unless there's an unspecified conditional you're referring to.

Let's look at Mario Kart Wii. There is a bullet bill powerup where the game plays for you. Or let's look at the single player Nintendo games and notice how easier things are getting? It can be discouraging for people to face defeat over and over again. There are people out there who can't help but rage at every defeat

If the gap in performance is too big and success looks hopeless, people will give up. Things need to look reachable for people to continue. It is about winning, but the approach to winning seems to be trying to escape from defeat

This. This is what Nintendo wants to avoid with the Smash series.

Haha, the "message from batman" sounds like someone else trying to pass as Mango, or Mango trying to pass as someone else. I can't tell which it is though!

Was about to say Batman talks just like Mango.

But we all know Mango doesn't have any money.

Those FILTHY CASUALS.
It's not casual gamers' fault, though. It's Nintendo taking advantage of their brand name to reach out for people who don't play video games regularly. Nintendo will tell you it's all about spreading video games, but it's all bout dat money$$.

Anyways... MELEE AT EVO.

I have an exam early Friday, but I'm staying up all night for the stream anyway.
You can do this, guys.

Just checked the OP, it seems that batman was referring to Melee it on Me's donation matching. Just wondering, who is mainly in charge of running VGBootcamp's stream tmr? Scar/prog?

Real talk!

The more I think about Thursday, the more I think it's going to be bigger than we actually think it is! We raised over 9K on our first donation drive and it only featured a couple of people just sitting around and talking! We didn't have any incentives to donate at all! It was just a stream that was setup in two days and donations started coming in when Scar gave the word! That was it!

SG raised 15K on their donation drive and they did an amazing job! However, they put in plenty of work to get that done by inviting the voice cast and giving incentives to donate more! Mike Z is doing work and I'm sure he will have something bigger setup for this Thursday! (If he brought in the voice cast, then I'm guessing he could bring in a composer this time! Michiru Yamane!)

This time, we have incentives to donate! We have much more support than we did on our first donation drive! I would not be surprised if we manage to raise $20K on Thursday!

Cheers!

Jesus Christ if he brought Michiru ****ing Yamane and offered something from her for a certain amount, I would have to get it (matching the donation for melee too of course).

I still play SOTN music from time to time (Dance of Gold, Wood Carving Partita anybody?), and I'll admit that being a lover of all things jazz, the Skullgirls soundtrack is dope.

Yeah. Dreamland 64 is unbeatable though.... I mean, c'mon.
Yeah, I love that ****. Only thing is that I put jazz above all else (having grown up with it + played a good deal), so sorry if that makes me some kind of music snob... just the fact that the composer of ****ing Symphony of the Night decided to make jazz was all I needed... now I don't even need porn whenever I want to rub one off.

Yeah, back when making music required actual talent. Remember those times? If liking that makes me a hipster then I'll be the happiest god-damn hipster in the world :).

Except avant-garde jazz, screw that. I hate it when they call that modern art-**** music.

I tried papa. My music teachers, my peers who've become pretty successful musicians and everybody else under the stagelights tried to get me into it, but I couldn't do it.

"It's an acquired taste," they said. "You'll learn to enjoy it," they said.

:c
lol It's alright. I didn't really like it at first but I can enjoy some of it.

Some Japanese dude tweeted that he is willing to donate up to 50K for ST. Damn these guys came out of nowhere.
