I'm hoping to see Isaac over chrom. Cuz I don't want to see a bunch of sword char. Golden Sun <3 that series. So my support all the way. Not sure how the djinns will be implanted if Isaac gets in.

If Little Mac got in, why not Isaac?
I don't understand what's the problem with a lot of sword characters if they are all unique.
I mean you cant even compare Link to Marth or Ike to Meta Knight I don't see why it's such a big deal for sword characters to make it in if they are all unique.
For example if Shulk and Takamaru got in sure they'd both be totally different because of how their fighting styles are they are obviously totally different.
Sorry just thought I'd point that out.

I know there all different play style totally agree. I just don't like it, cuz I want to see a distinct roster with this very popular game and I'm hoping falco and wolf comes back looking totally different or less clonish. Cuz There are a lot of variety of Nintendo char u could use if u added little Mac. So if I see bunch of swords char it's like throwing out other great potential playable Nintendo char. It won't bother me that much though.

I really like the idea of a Djinn being an item, giving your attacks extra damage and the elemental properties for a duration.
I was thinking there could be four different kinds, one for each element. They would move/fly around the stage similar to Mr. Saturn/Cucco and when grabbed they could perform a continuous elemental attack.

They could possibly be similar to the gust bellows and attack even when not being held.

Personally, I hope Wolf, Falco and Lucas are GONE because I'm so tired of seeing clone characters. The only reason I'm not that mad at Toon Link and Ganondorf (he better be totally revamped) is due to them being from the Zelda franchise, one of Nintendo's bread and butter. However, the fact that the StarFox series and Earthbound/Mother series having more than 1 rep when there are SO MANY other popular franchises that deserve playable reps literally disgusts me. Characters like Isaac, Takamaru, Mach Rider, Andy (Advanced Wars), Chibi Robo and I'm sure you guys can name like 5 other none represented series. I'm assuming the leak is true so I didn't name Shulk of Xenoblade and Marshall of Rhythm Heaven. I know some people don't like the idea of Marshall/Chorus Men but to me it's a welcomed addition as I'm positive it won't be a generic clone.

I'm 100% with you on this, Golden Sun came out around the time of Melee, so therefore to this day I'll say Isaac should of been added in Melee, and I feel the same about FE, I'm not a big fan of the series, but I did enjoy playing Roy in Melee and Ike in Brawl, to me they were like my alternative to Isaac.

I guess you can say I was never really too big of fan of Marth, not like I was with Roy and Ike.

Yeah if Isaac was in Melee then we probably could of had a second character in Brawl, maybe.

Now I really hope for Isaac this time because Chrom would not cut it for me, I want to play as Isaac and beat up Chrom and Marth, yeah if I get to play as Isaac, then I might not use FE characters anymore, depends on how well they play, all I know is Marth sucked in Melee and Brawl.
I am a huge supporter of Isaac and Golden Sun representation in Smash, but I still believe that Fire Emblem is a superior series and has a larger series span, a greater fan base, etc. But whether I want another F rep for a total of three or just keep Ike and Marth and add Isaac, I'd honestly go with three FE chars over Isaac, mainly because I do support Chrom more than Isaac. But really, I don't think Chrom vs Isaac means anything. I think that Shulk vs Isaac is where the danger for Isaac, or Shulk, not making it in lies.

How dare you mention Shulk in this thread...lol

I really don't understand the whole Isaac vs Shulk thing. There's a serious chance that we will have 3 blue haired, sword wielding Lords that all do the same exact thing in their games from the same franchise but God forbid we have 2 blonde haired rpg protagonist from 2 completely different series that both do completely different things. It really doesn't make sense at all.

If anyone seriously thinks Sakurai sat down and said "I gotta pick between Isaac and Shulk/Chrom", you have unlimited issues.

I don't think he sat down and specifically decided between the three right out of the gate, but it's certainly possible that as he was narrowing down his cast of characters, he got to Isaac and compared him with other new characters like that in deciding if he was really necessary. I know people hate it when others act like Isaac and Shulk are in direct competition, and it is a little silly to think that, but they are still in competition with each other, as are all newcomers. That roster is prime real-estate - not everybody is getting in, and Sakurai will have had to choose some characters over others at the end of the day, even if it wasn't his direct intention to do so. Sorry, just getting a little pedantic :p

If it were up to me I'd say forget Chrom, we already have a FE rep, I think they're overdoing it with two characters, it's not like its a main series such as Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Metroid, Starfox, you know the main streams.

RPG is a huge part of gaming, which should include characters in Super Smash Bros, we got Ness in the original, meh ok, even though Crono is better, which I'll say right now its a shame a Square character like Crono can't make it in, he was a big part of the SNES era.

Anyway my point is FE should make a cut and just have Marth, Chrom is a waste of a character slot he looks like somebody I'd just beat up for hindering the roster.

I think RPG series should have one rep each, and sure we got Marth, and Ness will probably return, but how many RPG characters are e getting?

My guess is 4 like in Brawl, but we need more variety, it was so boring with just Earthbound and Fire Emblem getting playable characters, then Isaac who could of been in instead of Ike or Lucas, yeah I said it, they should of had Lucas or Ike a Assist Trophy if they wanted to include them, make Isaac playable.

As for Shulk, I don't really know him too well, but I think Isaac should come first because he was in Brawl, but needs to be playable.

I'd like to see both Isaac and Shulk tbh, if there should be a Isaac vs Shulk, it should take place in a vs match, not debating which of the two is added.

Look at this.

Marth
Ness
Isaac
Shulk

This is what the RPG part of the roster should be, not a bunch of crappy FE characters, we already have Marth, that's good enough, stupid Marth, Roy is better.

Dream Roster right there, hopefully it does come true. Why can't they just add char from each series. like 3 starfox char was too much to represent the starfox series. There starting to lose popularity too. Even Platinum Games invited Sakurai to help make the next Starfox game for them which I think there admitting that so far their starfox games has been poop recently.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camelot_Software_Planning

this is some interesting info about Golden Sun company.

Maybe Isaac will be shown when Mario Golf comes out. :p just hoping.

I'll be honest. I'll be really pissed off if Isaac (or anyone, for that matter) comes at the cost of Ike or Lucas. I mean it.

Anyways, Camelot is concentrating on Mario Golf DLC. Isaac for Mario Golf.

But lucas is so similar to Ness B moves. if u want to play lucas then just customize ness with custom move sets. lol

Isaac > lucas/ness (either one, I don't know who is more important for Earthbound series) ignoring the fact that lucas been in ssb before.

So far it seems to me literally IKE B moves are so similar to Little Mac B moves.

The whole point of Isaac vs. Shulk isn't that they're blond-haired swordsmen, it's that they're both JRPG protagonists. Both characters roughly appeal to the same niche fanbase. To that end, Sakurai may easily be left in a scenario where he picks one or the other not because they're identical characters (not even remotely), but because it caters overly much to one segment of fans. After all, roster space/development time is precious, and as Sakurai your job is to make as many Nintendo fans happy as possible. At least, that's how I've always pictured it.

Here's what i think it comes down to.

About FE characters in SSB4, I'm fine with that. Three would be a lot but thats OK with me. I really think FE for the 3DS was great, and deserves some representation because it's a FE game that did well in the US. I just don't think it should be Chrom. Especially if they keep Ike. Maybe update Ike a bit and add a character that provides some fresh gameplay (say a slow lance user that plays defensively or a shaman like Tharja... she was popular, no?) as for Roy, I like him much better than Marth but Marth deserves it more. He's the "face" of FE and Roy/Marth are only popular here because Melee.

About Starfox Characters. They should NOT cut Wolf... or Falco. My Wish was that they would make Fox be a mixture of Fox/Falco's best moves, Call the character StarFox, give him Falco's lasers/D-air, and have falco be an Alt Costume (Along with James, Peppy and Slippy) and have Wolf be a bit more different. Change his Up B and for gods sake no landmasters... and thats really it. Well, add Krystal and That would make my day as a huge StarFox Fan.

About Earthbound Characters... leave lucas alone... make Ness better. (Recovery anyways) lol

About Shulk. He has a new game coming out soon so he'll probably get in because Nintendo knows the marketing value of putting a character in Smash Bros. Marth/Roy in melee is proof of what it can do, as is lucas/Pit in brawl. I don't think his inclusion specifically decides the fate of Isaac but every newcomer puts pressure on the chances of any other proposed character. Especially if those characters would be doing the same thing (as in marketing a lesser known franchise).

About Golden Sun's Isaac/Mathew. I reeeeeeaaaally hope he makes it. He is hands down who I'd want to play as for many many reasons, and I'd love if more people knew about him. His inclusion in brawl as an assist trophy was able to make many people aware of his existence that otherwise would never have known about him. The Golden Sun VC sales is probably proof of that, even though its been quite a while since brawl came out. IF Camelot is now working on Golden Sun 4, than we have a good chance for Isaac/Mathew to be in the game (Probably Mathew). It would get people into buying GS4 and probably GS3 to know whats happening as well as make for an interesting character people can fall in love with.

btw, If I had to make a cut anywhere in the roster it would be Mr G&W and R.O.B. They lack the expressions and "cool-ness" factor that everyone else seems to have and they sort of bring the colorfulness of the cast down for me. Sorry to any fans of these characters.

The problem is it's not a niche fan-base... While Nintendo isn't exctly known for it's jRPGs, jRPGs themselves are a popular genre outside of Japan, let alone in their home country. While Nintendo only produce one of the big names of jRPGs (Pokémon) these are the next biggest names they have, and appeal more to the other major sections (Medieval Fantasy vs Post-Punk RPGs) of the major audience of jRPG gamers...

The two characters appeal to different sections of the jRPG fan-base as stated earlier, and therefore do not compete if we consider them as base-branching... and either way it's a moot point as if the discussion is to who is the best choice for base-branching into jRPG fans then the contenders are Slime and Black Mage; Isaac and Shulk don't even get a look in.

Moreover if there was really such a discussion about catering to one section of the fandom too much why did we have 13 [this was pre-KI's rail shooter transformation] (15 if you count Samus) platforming characters in Brawl to one racing game rep? And guess what? We've gotten 2 new Platform characters this game and still no new racing reps!

If it was about fan-branching we'd only discuss Rhythm games as they are highly popular and currently have one final smash (which could be changing) for representation! Or Survival Horrors, Visual Novels, Idol Management Sims, Puzzls and Sandbox games?

This argument assumes Sakurai is thinking in ways his track record does not support, and if anything contradicts quite violently...

For one, we are talking about a Nintendo all-stars game, so it stands to reason we aren't worried about genres not covered by Nintendo to a significant degree if at all. Two, many major Nintendo franchises are so large that they long since bypass the boundaries of genre: you don't include Mario characters to promote platformers, or Zelda characters to promote adventure games. You include multiple characters from those franchises because they are core Nintendo franchises with tons of fans to those specific franchises, and doing anything less would not be a proper representation of Nintendo all-stars. As an example, Captain Falcon was included as the sole racing game rep in Smash 64 because, at the time, F-Zero was a pretty big deal for Nintendo, and we haven't seen any newcomers since then as the franchise has been largely dormant and fairly small in fanbase, not to mention that Mario Karts have largely taken over the racing genre for Nintendo.

Nintendo JRPGs are a more niche space. As I recall from the numbers I've seen online (and without influence of eShop), the Mother series has sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 1-2 million copies overall, Xenoblade Chronicles is in a similar range (leaning on the lower side), and the Golden Sun series is somewhere north of 3 million. Not exactly small numbers, but all pretty tiny compared to other Nintendo franchises that rake in many times more sales, especially if you go on a game-by-game basis. You could give each of those JRPG franchises a rep in Smash, but at best you're catering to 1-2 million fans per franchise, and given genre similarities and the kinds of players they appeal to and there's going to be a lot of overlap between them. Meanwhile, giving a new rep to a franchise like Mario or Pokemon appeals to their far larger individual fanbases and generally brings a lot more attention to Smash than an Isaac or Shulk would. Even if those fanbases have significant overlap, it's well worthwhile to appeal to those fanbases because they are so large and critical to Nintendo.

Sakurai's job is to make a game that as many people will want to buy as possible. To that end, you include a Mario character, and a Pokemon character, and characters from massively popular franchises like Animal Crossing and Wii Fit that don't have characters. So what about the rest? Well, you have to start making tough choices as to what's most worth spending development resources on. Let's say Golden Sun and Xenoblade Chronicles are both on the table for Smash inclusion. They're both pretty small franchises comparatively, they're both JRPGs of some sort, they roughly cater to the same sort of fans. Including one or the other may add quite a bit to Smash, and both certainly bring a lot to the table character-wise, but ultimately the breadth of fans you appeal to doesn't increase by nearly as much for including both as it would for including one of them and a character from a more diverse/successful franchise, so chances are he goes for the latter. Maybe the fanbases are considered disparate enough to justify both, maybe they're so small both get skipped, but from my view the most likely scenario is one or the other.

Granted, this is still an oversimplification of the probable selection process, as other factors like raw character appeal, unique gameplay additions, and even flat out developer bias are likely somewhere in the picture, not to mention Sakurai is just hard to predict in general. It's just how I envision why something like Isaac vs. Shulk is a potential issue and thus why I consider it as a factor.

I don't see there being all that much overlap, but maybe that's because I'm more of an RPG gamer than anything else... RPGs sell on two major things: Setting (plot, characters, style, world building) and Battle Mechanics...

Golden Sun features silent protagonists exploring a medieval fantasy style world with turn based instance battles and complex class changing, mid-battle, micro-management in a chibi-fied game.

Xenoblade features fleshed out voice-acted character characters exploring a post-punk mechanical (ish) world using sci-fi (ish) weapons with real time battles in basically an offline MMO.

The two do not share much in common other than an over-generalising genre name. Moreover the percieved fan-base should be a good indicator of the disparity in style of the two... Wrong as it is Golden Sun was seen to be America's baby and hated in Japan (VC says otherwise), and Shulk is seen to be Japan's most wanted (despite his high standings in RTC's want and higher american sales)... They are incorrect, but the perception should highlight that the fandoms are not the same!

I find that a bit crazy but then again I'm not an Earthbound/Mother fan. However, I am a huge Fire Emblem fan but I wouldn't be upset if Ike got cut to allow my boy Isaac to get in, BUT if Ike gets cut and there is no Isaac to top it off then I'll be very upset. And by "upset" I mean won't by the Wii U version.

I'd like to go ahead and ask if it is likely we'll see Isaac Pre-Release if he's in or will we have to wait for the full 3DS version.
Personally I think we'll have to wait till post-release but let me hear you guys thoughts on that subject.

I have to agree with you. The only possible newcomer I can see getting announced before the 3DS release is Pacman at E3 but there is a chance we could get up to 3 newcomers announced just like last E3 so it's still possible. However Isaac was an unlockable Assist Torphy in Brawl so maybe he'd be an unlockable character in Smash 4.

Golden Sun and Xenoblade aren't specifically in conflict with each other. Those who think one will keep the other out are looking at the most shallow surface details; blonde hair, sword-wielding, JRPG protagonists. That's literally all they have in common. Not only that, but those people assume Sakurai will also only dig that deeply before realizing one cannot be had should we have the other. That is really really underestimating Sakurai's dedication towards looking into each character individually to see what they can bring. The two share a weapon, but only in the most general way possible - their swords are quite different and their potential playstyles even more so. They share a genre - but the gameplay is hardly the same - and even if it were, this isn't an RPG - this is a fighter. Who cares what genre they come from if they both would make feasible, interesting characters? There's no cap as far as genre-specific inclusions go.

If such surface qualities really were enough to keep characters out, neither Isaac nor Shulk would have a chance; we've had a blonde-haired sword-wielder since 64. One might get in while the other doesn't - but it's hardly Sakurai thinking, "Well, I have x, so now I can't include y." it's just one making the cut while the other misses it.

I'll be honest. I'll be really pissed off if Isaac (or anyone, for that matter) comes at the cost of Ike or Lucas. I mean it.

Well it wouldn't be Isaac specifically coming at the cost of a cut, would it? No more so than any other newcomer. It's not like he'd be added late and cause those next on the chopping block to be excluded.

This is a great list of RPG representatives.

I'd personally love to either see DD Isaac (ie his older version) or a redesign of his GBA outfit. I know he was an assist trophy and likely didn't get too much detail, but I really hated the way he looked in Brawl. It felt *too* simple. Something closer to Matthew's outfit would be better.

P.S. Hello SB community, haven't posted in FOREVER! lol

Mainly because there are more hype-generating possible newcomers that could be in this game (like Ridley or Mewtwo, though the latter isn't exactly a newcomer, but you know what I mean).

Why all the Fire Emblem hate? It is a pretty good series. [Shrugs] Eh, different strokes, I suppose.

Anyhow, as much as I love Fire Emblem (which is hands down mine favourite video game series of all time), I would have to agree with not wanting Chrom included in Smash 4. In mine opinion, he just looks way too generic--which is why I would very much prefer Lucina, as she would definitely stand out more than Chrom. Also, I really hope Ike returns; I do not see why he would go to the gallows, as he did have his own unique moveset. [Shrugs] Then again, so did Mewtwo.

Maybe update Ike a bit and add a character that provides some fresh gameplay (say a slow lance user that plays defensively or a shaman like Tharja... she was popular, no?)
Personally, I could see Ephriam from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones being a very unique character, but since his game came out a long time ago, I do not find him likely. And yes, Tharja does seem to be a very popular character, though I really think that has a lot more to do with her attire than anything else. However, she was not a major character, only a unit, so I seriously doubt she would make it in, at least not as a playable character. From Fire Emblem, the only non-lords I could see making it in as playable are either Michaiah, Soren, or Robin, since all of them played significant roles in the games in which they appeared. Michaiah was the set main character throughout the beginning of Radiant Dawn, and even after she lost the spotlight to Ike she continued to play a major role. Soren was pretty much Ike's sidekick, and his actions greatly affected the stories of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. As for Robin, to avoid spoilers, she played one of the biggest roles in Fire Emblem: Awakening. Personally, I would LOVE to see Soren playable, as he is one of mine favourite Fire Emblem characters of all time, personality-wise. Plus, we could use a wind-oriented fighter.

Even Platinum Games invited Sakurai to help make the next Starfox game for them which I think there admitting that so far their starfox games has been poop recently.
Now THAT, I would love to see. I must say, I have not been too crazy about the Star Fox series ever since the release of Star Fox Adventures.

But anyway, to get back on-topic...

The reason I personally find Isaac's chances to be good is because of his sheer uniqueness. This time around, Sakurai really seems to be taking into account the uniqueness of potential newcomers--more so than ever before. Thus far, ALL of the revealed newcomers are very unique in their own right, in terms of playstyle. That being said, Sakurai does not strike me as the type whom just thinks, "Oh, which character is the most popular?", but rather, "Whom will bring something new and unique to the table?" I fancy Wii Fit Trainer's inclusion proves that. During the making of Brawl, I honestly believe Sakurai did at least consider Isaac, but in the end did not add him, either due to competition with other characters or other circumstances.

Oh, and on a trivial note... Personally, I have always seen Isaac's hair not as blonde, but rather a light brown.

[EDIT] Oh, and I fancy all of the playable characters in Smash 4 will be revealed prior to the game's release, seeing as they will all be leaked on the web anyway.

I'd like to go ahead and ask if it is likely we'll see Isaac Pre-Release if he's in or will we have to wait for the full 3DS version.
Personally I think we'll have to wait till post-release but let me hear you guys thoughts on that subject.
He could happen pre-release, but like others have said, I see post-release as likelier. We only have a few more months until the 3DS version touches down, and some of the other candidates, like Pac-Man, Mii, Palutena, and Chrom seem much likelier to be shown in advance. You never know though.

At least the wait isn't until winter or anything.

P.S. Hello SB community, haven't posted in FOREVER! lol
Well welcome back! ^_^

I don't see much deviation from his normal (GS1+2) appearance should he be an AT again tbh, I don't think there have been any Smash-original AT redesigns so far... and I personally see Sakurai sticking with the most iconic version of Isaac, but at least we'll see a much prettier model than in Brawl. Ofc not as pretty as if he were playable...

The thing isn't Isaac competing versus Shulk, it's ALL the smaller Nintendo franchises competing for a spot on the roster.

I mean, they can't all be included so when it came down to it yes, both Isaac and Shulk would've been on the same "minor franchises" group being considered for a spot... along with others, I'm sure (think Custom Robo, Advance Wars, Sin & Punishment, and so on).

Well the only scenario where all these smaller franchises have to compete is when Sakurai decides to give the big franchises a Newcomer once again and forgets about the smaller, but also important ones. And with Greninja and Rosalina i get the feeling we will get another Zelda Newcomer which is not really needed and maybe even one more from Mario franchise to have Pokemon, Zelda and Mario balanced (this is really depending on Mewtwo as 6th Pokemon rep though).

It is really sad that all this smaller franchises get passed over and over when they all have at least one really innovative character to offer...

I've been thinking a bit on how Isaac's playstyle would compare to Little Mac, since Isaac is likely to also be a character who's strong on the ground but weak in the air.

The biggest difference is range. Little Mac is a brawler. He's all about getting up close and hitting opponents with powerful punches. He's even got armor to shrug off some hits. Isaac on the other hand is telekinetic. He can do some damage close up, but he won't be able to withstand attacks the way Little Mac does. He'd prefer to keep his distance and use psynergy to control the battlefield, hitting out-of-reach opponents with boulders and brambles. He'd potentially have ranged grabs, too.

The other major difference is recovery. Neither fighter wants to be up in the air for too long, but Isaac would have a much easier time getting back on stage. There's not much boxer like Little Mac can do for a recovery, but Isaac's got psynergy on his side, affording him more options. He could lift himself up with a boulder, or summon vines. If his psynergy hand is his grab move, he could use grip as a tether. Little Mac would be harder to knock off the stage, but Isaac would be harder to keep off the stage.

I was initially concerned that Isaac might be considered redundant if Little Mac already fills the ground fighter niche, but Isaac's got far more than enough going for him to have his own distinct, unique playstyle.

I actually really like this playstyle. Have the standard-ish sword moveset for his simpler and less effective attacks, but use Psynergy for his medium-range game.
Would be interesting to see, if implemented right.

Unfortunately, that answer doesn't quite work when the actual question is, "Isaac or Shulk or Andy or Ray or Chibi Robo or Saki or Starfy or Wonder Red or Takamaru or..."

That's if we're lucky to get another newcomer franchise at all.
