Isaac's chances have always been touch-and-go, and it's entirely possible he gets passed on again, but discounting the characters in the leak, Isaac is one of the last remaining candidates with a shot, so people are going to ride that chance as long as they can.

I'm not pretending should we only have two more spots in the dark (which is just speculation), there aren't characters with better odds than Isaac, but as long as he has a chance, he'll still have support. And if we have nine new series, that's already three more than the previous highest amount we've received (not counting 64), so what's to stop one more? Seems a rather arbitrary cap at this point, the focus does seem to be on new series to Smash this time around more than ever before. I agree it's a bit much, ten is a lot, but then again... so is nine...

I thought we'd get like seven at the most.

In any case, as long as there are open spots, as long as Isaac's specific chances as a character remain fairly unwavered, his supporters are going to keep pushing for him. I'm sure the supporters of K. Rool and the like are doing the same thing. And while he very well might not make it, it's not like we can count him out yet either.
Fair enough, although I still have a feeling that we're already done with new series. But we'll see about that.

Also if there are only two spots, those will go to Mewtwo and a retro character. However, if we get three or more characters after the confirmed/leaked characters, Isaac does have a shot of getting in. Either way, Isaac is one of these characters that we probably won't know about until the end should he be playable (same with the other remaining candidates).

Just bought mine copy of Golden Sun! I was not planning on actually playing it until Golden Sun: The Lost Age came out as well, but... I just could not help mineself. As I went through the prologue, the entire time I was just filled with a nostalgic euphoria. I cannot wait until mine semester is over so I have more time to play...

Honestly, it wouldnt be a surprise to me if at the end Mewtwo supporters are "scammed" with Mewtwo not being playable in this game. If there is any Pokemon character that we know he is going to be back is Jigglypuff. You may like this or not. But Mewtwo, like Ridley, King. K. Rool and Palutena are not 100% safe bet. With Palutena is really easy to asume that she is in at this point, but with Sakurai sometimes anything goes.

During the first moments i though that this was going to be similar to stages, Portable series AT = 3DS, HomeConsole series AT = WiiU. But actually, shown AT dont exactly point to that direction.

Perhaps due the limitations of 3DS maybe some AT dont appear and get replaced by others.

Personally I'd prefer Matthew over Isaac. He's got a cooler outfit.

And I mean, he looks exactly the same, he's got all the same abilities, and he's the son of Isaac, so he'd basically be repping his father in a way too. And he's the protagonist of the latest game too.

Whoever turns up playable the other can easily be a costume.

But Mewtwo isn't a newcomer, so he doesn't count for the newcomer spot.

Regardless, assuming the leak is 100% correct, I still don't think we should count out Isaac yet unless the complete roster has been correctly leaked.

Why isn't anyone excited? Today golden sun came out on virtual console right? Still no sign of an Isaac assist trophy so this can only mean goodness.....then again it could mean that Sakurai cares so little about golden sun that he didn't even bother mentioning it.

Just saying... If the GBA VC would have been on the 3DS, the thread would have been a lot more active.

My desire for Isaac in Sm4sh is not quantifiable. It burns brighter than the Golden Sun itself.

But I won't let myself get hyped, because if he's not in, then I will be too disappointed.

I'm already disappointed enough with all the projected rosters enough as it is.

Honestly, I do not see why they did not just release it on both platforms. They probably would have sold more. [Shrugs] I guess they are just trying to get more people to buy a Wii U. Whom knows? The might release it on the 3DS eventually.

That's exactly what they're trying to do. The abassador program for the 3DS had some GBA games for it. They simply are just waiting to see if, with Mario Kart most likely, the Wii U will sell more.

I feel if they had planned to release it on both consoles, Issac might even be more likely.

IMO, with the 3DS version being based around handhelds, and how we got Isaac/Golden Sun music in Brawl, Golden Sun won't be passed over this time.

Yeah, it appears as an attempt to help Wii U sells for the Holidays as it can use anything to help sells right now but there is something interesting about it coming out much later. Most people seem to think that we may be getting DLC for Smash as a way to keep the game going for years. (Even though I know a lot of people still play Melee today after like 12-13 years. But my point is, there MUST be something in Nintendo's pocket to hype up the Wii U version upon release and it would be interesting if there are a few newcomers intentionally left off the roster upon the 3DS release and the only way to get them is to buy the Wii U version which would have the code for the DLC for both versions.

Anyway people, VC Golden Sun is not a factor that modifies Isaac possibilities under any condition.

Isaac's chances are looking good, he had a game after brawl,He wasn't being shown as an assist at the direct, golden sun was released on the wii u VC meaning more people have the oppurtunity to play it, little mac is in who is more popular outside of japan, this shows that sakurai actually cares about characters who are more popular elsewhere, I'll try not to hype myself but it's looking really good plus he's so unique you could do almost anything with him

I think it helps a tad, it shows Nintendo recognizes the importance of the game and it makes it more relevant.
But it is WAY too late, i mean, we are in advanced stage of development of both games, Isaac destiny in that game is something that cant change at the moment.

VC releases two years after the roster was probably decided don't really mean much for Isaac (VC releases don't mean much in general for Smash)... GS was a profitable game in its day, once the GBA touched/touches down on the VC (it will eventually on the 3DS) it's only a matter of time before GS follows suit. It being a launch title (sort of) was great and all, but it would've happened eventually either way. Most of Nintendo's old games wind up on the VC... the good ones, the bad ones, the successful ones, the unsuccessful ones...

This could help towards a GS4, but it won't help towards Isaac's position in SSB4.

So you mean greninja was added to the roster 2 years ago, when X and Y were probably in early development, X and Y was shown early 2013 and you are saying the roster was finalised early 2012, also it does mean something, the game is now more accessable and more people have played it and know the character

I'm saying a VC release isn't going to be the deciding factor in including Isaac, whether it happened now or when the roster was being decided. If it could jump his popularity to a notable extent, that'd be one thing, but we're too late for that anyway.

A VC release is not the same thing as a major game such as X/Y releasing. It's not the same as any game releasing, this is a VC release. And adding a character now (not whenever Greninja was added... probably also in 2012 tbh - Sakurai does get early peeks as these games) just... isn't going to happen... not for Isaac, not for anybody. It's only a few months before release...

You can't just throw around character addition, these things take a long time, especially original characters. Especially characters from unrepresented series, given how Sakurai treats them. I'm not saying Isaac definitely isn't playable or anything, I'm just saying the VC release wouldn't be what gets him in this time. He would've been decided along with the other characters.

And btw, X/Y was in development for three and a half years. So no, it wasn't in "early development" a year before it released.

I never said it was a deciding factor but it does help. Also I'm gonna just assume that X and Y went into development around late 2011- early 2012 since black and white 2 came out mid 2012 so it was kinda in the middle of development, they wouldn't have been able to choose a pokemon for smash at that point

It doesn't hurt... but at this point it also doesn't help. It's too late for inclusions. If the only single character Sakurai has been willing to make a concession for is Sonic... that should say something. And that game still took a year to release after Sonic was added. The 3DS version is probably going to go gold (finish development)... anywhere from next month to July at the latest tbh... that's a bit late for adding a character.

And no, it took roughly three and a half years. That places "early" development in 2010/2011, at least a year before SSB4 development even started. Even if there wasn't any focus testing on the three starters at the stage Greninja was added in Smash, however and whenever he was added was certainly a fair bit before impending release.

It's just... way too late to be adding characters, that's like Sakurai's first priority. And if Isaac didn't make the cut initally... having his series experience what pretty much 90% of Nintendo's old games experience isn't really anything to write home about in terms of Smash. Yeah if it's successful it could help extend the series in the future, and that will help Isaac's future chances if he doesn't make for this game, but when development reaches the eleventh hour, it's far too late for character additions. Even Sonic wouldn't have been added to Brawl in like... Oct/Nov 2007.

Still I doubt back 2 years ago game freak told sakurai to put greninja in, that would'e been way to early and also rosalina, She didn't have a chance before she was announced before 3D World and she wasn't added to 3d world till pretty far in the games develpoment

Those are quite a few assumptions. What we do know is characters have been added a year prior to their games releasing before.

Characters have not been added two, three, four months before the game releases due to the Virtual Console though. That's the period things are being ironed out, not added.

I'm just saying rosalina was announced for 3D World in november and then in december she was announced for smash, obviously sakurai knew about it earlier but she was added to 3D World late, that's quite obvious looking at her animations. For that to actually make sense she would've been added to smash around the middle of 2013 meaning the roster couldn't have been completed 2 years ago

Assuming she was added because of 3D World... and not for her playstyle or popularity (which was fairly strong in Japan) or several other high-profile appearances... and that's also assuming she was added late to 3D World and that Sakurai did not know about it until 2013. Not to mention it's assuming either Sakurai didn't have any new Mario characters planned initially, he scrapped a partially developed one for Rosalina, or we'll be getting two, all of which are unlikely scenarios.

With all those assumptions, you can't present something factual. All you can present is a guess at what happened. And regardless, being added in the middle of 2013 is a whole lot different than being added now. Not to mention, that's 3D World you're talking about, not some VC re-release.

Before 3D World she didn't have that strong popularity or a big enough role with multiple appearances. It's also quite obvious she was added late to 3D World since a lot of her animations were recycled from peach and she wouldn't have been put in till around mid 2013, disrupting the "finalized" roster and why would he scrap a character that was already been worked on and sakurai would know about **** months in advance giving him way more than enough time to add that character in so why can't he do it for isaac

At this point, all the VC release can do is bump up Isaac's priority (if he was planned indeed). I'm not in the mood to get into debate mode, so I'm out.

1) She did have strong popularity in Japan
2) There were characters were bigger roles and more appearances, but she did have a big role and multiple appearances in recent years, which seems to be where Sakurai is drawing most of the additions from this time around.
3) How do you know she was added late to 3D World instead of due to ease of basing her off an existing character?
4) Before Sakurai has added characters based on games that don't release until the year after they were decided upon, it wouldn't have to only be months that he'd learn about Rosalina - he learns about games early. Again, this is under the assumption 3D World was the driving factor.
5) Exactly, he wouldn't scrap a character, but that was only one of the three hypotheticals, and you didn't address the other two.
6) You're the one claiming he knew and added Rosalina months in advance, not me. I'm saying the year before 3D World. Even if he did add her in the summer and show her in the winter (which would take a huge chunk of attention better divided than prioritized on one character so she can arbitrarily be shown in December), that's a whole lot different than adding a character that will need tweaking, balancing, content to go along with him, changes to other modes to accommodate him and his series all in the time when development normally would focus on actually polishing the game. Why can't he? He could, but then you'd get a buggy game, because attention went to him instead of ironing out last-minute kinks. Developers wouldn't do that - especially for a VC title. Every old series gets VC titles! Being on the VC is nothing special! Certainly not enough to convince Sakurai to add Isaac if he didn't before...

I'd presume a character like Isaac wouldn't be on the expendable list... unless he was a semi-clone (which he wouldn't be). Chances are he's either safe, was cut very early in development, or wasn't planned at all.

Sakurai doesn't generally add new series with original characters lightly...

Yes lots of games get on the VC but isaac is one of the most requested characters even before brawl and that's just boosting his relevance

You do understand adding Isaac at this point would either require a delay or would hurt the finished game, yes? For being on two systems, this game is releasing fairly early compared to previous Smash development time. I'd also imagine Nintendo is breathing down Namco's neck to get this game out asap; they need it. Every little bit of development time is likely precious, they can't throw schedule off at this point for any character, Isaac or otherwise. The game releases quite soon all things considered. They are well past adding characters. Any characters. For any games, VC or retail or eShop or whatever.

Sakurai would've known about golden sun being on the VC months in advance giving him enough time to add him in and even then we still have until summer and with namco's help adding a character shouldn't take long

If Sakurai didn't find Isaac worth adding before, what is a re-release going to accomplish when the vast majority of Nintendo games do or will experience the same thing? It's not like Nintendo made an Earthbound-sized deal about it.

This is untrue it's funny to think about but Rosalina kinda had this cult following she was actually very popular in fact that's one reason she was in 3D World.

I mean she was popular, she just didn't have that staying power that toad or bowser jr had before she was playable

Yeah, all prominent Mario characters technically do have much greater popularity than almost any character from a relatively smaller series, even most of the B-Tier series, if only because the audience for their games is so big. It's just that one, Rosalina was not the most popular Mario candidate and two, on the internet it's a bit harder to tell how much Mario/Pokemon/Zelda/DK characters stand out popularity-wise. Because it's crazy.

On the other hand, people act as if Isaac's popularity has only ever been this niche. Pre-Brawl he was right up there with others. Maybe not as much as say Dedede or Diddy or Ridley, but around Olimar? Sure.
