Is there any point of trying to become a Pro since the release of Brawl?

This is NOT a Melee vs Brawl thread.

So is there any point of being or trying to be a pro at melee anymore? I hear everyone say melee4live but since the release of Brawl, Melee tournaments will start to dry up, people will leave and people may get tired of trying to achieve something so high which will give them little benefit in return. Say it's well into the Brawl scene, will it be worth it? So Is it worth a certain number of years to be a pro anymore?

Depends. In some places, Melee is dying or dead, while in some places it's flourishing. Just play whichever game you want to.

^Not exactly...I mean, yeah, play whatever game you want...but just because his area's got a dying Melee scene doesn't mean he should give up...

Chis, if you're in an area that has a bad Melee scene and you truly wanna play, host a tourney, or at least a Smashfest...don't use other people not playing as an excuse....

No, I like Melee, alot. And I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Neither an I using anyone as an excuse, I just wanted to hear how people felt about this topic.

Melee and Brawl are BOTH awesome.

Don't give up on them, just because of what other n00bs say.

Wasn't this basically what was said in the "problem" with melee thread?

No, that was about joining the community. I'm talking about if you can still see yourself trying to get better despite the dwindling number of people and tournaments (in the future). Also no Brawl Vs Melee. I don't want to break any rules.

Well lemme say this, there has NEVER been a melee scene where I have been, Its basically like it was dead all along for me. but I still tried to get good at it knowing I would seldom have the chance to attend a tournament. There is no brawls scene here either. both games are dead here, yet I still practice and do my best to get better.

Before all the "MIc's gonna lock this" this looks to be fine, so don't not post thinking I'm gonna ambush it.

if you ask me... it's totally worth it. There's still big melee tournies being hosted occassionally and as time passes melee will start to regain ground. Plus the melee community is full of awesome people =))

I would like to go pro, eventually, but I have a LONG road ahead of me. Please read the "Guides to being a pro smasher" threads. These told me what I have to do to achieve my goal. It is definitely worth it.

Well, Bend is kinda, dying, it seems.
As I was leaving last weekend, I noticed a lot more businesses closed/closing that were there last time.
I mean, there's a lot.

No point in trying to become pro, all 'pros' are actually genetically modified humans created on a soundstage on mars. This goes with all professional gamers.

Wouldn't be that hard...and we had a lot of fun on that soundstage...modification's painless, too ^__^

I never really said you were...I'm just making sure, because that's one of the more common excuses I hear from other people...and it's good to hear you're still into the Melee scene...

Nobody cares about Brawl

And I seriously think Melee can live on. Look at the SF games for example, people still play the old versions despite different sequels.

Yeah i decided to put it in my sig, i made it but now that i look at it again i find it really funny.

Yeah Mic gave me these warning point things or whatever. You know what i think? in order for melee to survive we have to literary make diffrent boards for each game. Right now the boards are ruled by Brawlers. In order for us to ever revive melee we have to accept the fact that there is another game out there that has thousands of times more followers. Most people laugh that we still play melee in these boards, its just not safe anymore for us here. We will soon all disapear or be the outcasts of the smash boards. Just clicking "Melee discussion" i feel like we are trapped in this little cage where not much can be posted.

No its not too late to become a good melee player, just make sure you get lots of friends to play with you though, and you will have to have a hawk eye to find these melee tournies. However unless more melee tournies spring up, we are forever to be doomed in Brawls shadow.

No...it's not too late...there are people that have never played Smash before at all that are jumping into the Melee community...there's no reason to assume that it's not worth it...you know the old saying: "better late than never"...besides, Florida has a strong Melee community from what I hear...if SmashMac and Shiz haven't retired, see if they'd help out (I dunno if they would or not)...

@Smash Champ: you made that? Would you mind if I used it as an avi on my forum?

B.C still has a prospering Melee community. We have 10-20 regular players.

Look in the tournament listings under CAST4, It's a Canadian tournament with people like Eggz,Wife, and if not 3 dozen Canadian Melee players going.

I don't think it's to late, infact now is the best time for middle class players to get recognized. Haven't you watched the sets with M2k vs PC, and Shiz vs M2K.
THATS new generation top players.

You can't tell me you care about the money is why you play Brawl. Lets be realistic here, Brawl at high level is just timing and studying. (YES studying theres no technical involved) I can learn more from Brawl from reading guides/frames..etc then actually playing it.

So many Brawl players to are starting to notice Melee, and these are people who've never played any of the smash game. I love the smash series but Brawl is just a party game. Might as well start trying to get pro at Mario Party instead.

ugh. it's this attitude that will be the death of melee. the whole "OMFG EETS TWO LAET NAO AND I KENT KETCHUP!!!!!!" mindset that keeps people from even trying to enter. they give up before they even start.

Lol like it was much easier back for some of us 3-4 years ago? There were already amazing players. It's just that back then people had no choice Meele was the game.

Now you can just dumb down your brain and hands a bit then go with barwl.

if you get good at one fighting game, you'll be good at other fighters. i might be oversimplifying this, but if you can practice a fighter and learn the mechanics of it and then really understand the finer points of the game, you can apply that to a large majority of fighters. obviously there are large differences in game play, but its kinda like having one way of thinking and then coming up with a different way of thinking for the same solution(winning/beating the opponent). once you have learned all the specific moves and options available to whatever game you're trying to pick up, its all about mentality and out thinking your opponent and that is the important thing that carries over from game to game

if you want money and fame from a fighting game scene... probably safer to bet on brawl, but many things you could learn from becoming amazing at melee would still apply to brawl

I wish I knew melee was more than meets the eye, I just learned that wavedash is applicable! But I think this is way too late to start now, especially for someone like me.
Florida has one of the biggest melee scenes in the U.S.

Dude, we have a melee gigabits happening next month!

Oct.10 at Gigabits LAN center, Orlando FL. Just go there and you will meet tons of people who can help you (and actually some people are just starting too, so it's not like you'll be alone).

@Cinder-Yeah, Shiz and Smashmac still play (they don't always come to gigs though).

Earth, right?
No melee isn't dying just gotta look around some more

Unfortunately for me, there is no smash scene where I live whatsoever but I still continue to practice...

Who knows?

A random tourney could come up soon

But no, don't give up this decrease in players is only temporary. Actually I think there are increasing numbers now but who knows?

Yeah, eventually the newness of Brawl will wear off and people will start to play melee again. So, keep on practicing. Also, if you have any friends try to get them to play melee with you. Even if they are absolutely terrible they will eventually get better. Anyways it's still someone to play with.

Also, look around where you live for some tournaments. I thought that there would never be a melee tournament where i live. I live in a small city in mid-tennessee. There's actually a melee tournament this Saturday in my town. It will suprise you where you will find tournaments.

but around my area (i live near miami beach), everyone that i know plays brawl, and i do like brawl, i think maybe if it had the mechanisms like melee with the wavedashing and stuff it'd be more awesome, i really just don't want to sit at home and practice melee, if anything, i'd rather just play the game, i mean, isn't that what you all want? is to play with others? it's freakin boring! playing comps, my sister used to tell me ''get a life!'', and it's definitely cooler to play with people, i don't even play brawl online, cause personally, it kind of creeps me out to have someone i don't even know playing on the other side of the screen, i dont know, it's just me, my main thing with melee is that it's not as appealing, im not against it by any means, but brawl just makes me feel that it's the correct thing to do, if you guys know what i mean. sorry about the long post.
