Is Luigi Underrated?

Luigi, a character with great combo ability, although rather floaty, is currently low on the tier list. Being my personal favorite character, I'm discouraged at his position, wish him to move up, and really see his potential. Unfortunately, right now he has absolutely no AT's, and as far as I know, no top players (unless you include Boss) developing his metagame, leaving him to wither away.

Discuss. Is he better than he appears? I think so.

Yeah, he's underrated. But it's so much better when we kick someone's *** with him :).

Really, what holds him back is rather terribly mobility and approach, range, and DDD's infinite.

Otherwise, he'd be in lower high i'd assume.

His approach is really not that bad when you use the tornado...it's really fast, although it can get predictable so you need to mix it up.

I find landing an fmash to be fairly difficult with him, but maybe that's simply because I pretty much online play online...haven't been to a tournament yet.

He's a better character, as a character, than he places on the tier list. However, there are several large, obvious problems with taking him to a tournament. Those problems are basically 80% of the high and top tier.

D3-infinite
MK-worse than infinite
Rob-ouch
GW-ouch
marth-ouch

Falco and snake have the advantage over him too (just not cripplingly so).

Any character with that kind of a matchup problem isn't very viable for tournament play.

As a secondary, he's really good. Having him as your primary character he is not however.

In a game where top tier is excluded Luigi is easily one of the best in the game. Put top tier back in the game and Luigi fails hard. Luigi can play with every single character in high tier, but once you throw in the top tier he cannot even try to compete. I have been learning this the hard way ever since I started going to tournaments. You cannot beat good MKs with Luigi, it just doesn't happen. He has a hard enough time against ROB, Marth, D3, and Gdubbs as is.

But honestly, Luigi has an advantage over most characters in high tier (or goes even), but those characters he can compete with also do better against the top tier, setting him lower.

Luigi unfortunately has slow aerial speed, slow (and slippery) ground mobility, incredibly low range, and predictable-easy to hit-recovery.

His comboing ability, as others point out, is quite limited IMO as long as your opponent has decent DI or other options.

He also has no solid approach for the top tier characters, as well as many others...

But gee does he have power, forward smash, neutral air, and an awesome uppercut.

Tiers are for tournies, and Luigi is in the right place for that. That's not to say he can't be a force to be reckoned with in friendly matches, but expect to hit a wall against the top tiers.

IMO, he's one of the most OVERestimated characters in the game. He deserves to be MUCH lower, and to be honest I don't know how he's not down towards the bottom.

Wrong. Completely wrong.

D3 has an INFINITE. Grab=stock. And look at d3's ****ing grab range.
MK is even WORSE! Every move he has eats completely through every move luigi has. He doesn't have to read you, he just has to wait and **** you for moving. He can punish everything you do in the middle of you doing it. Instawin.

Ah ****. Here we go with another yet underrated thread. As obviously, everyone always points out he has the potential while his meta-game is currently at a stand-still. Kinda like the Autopilot disease like Diddy Kongs. But it's w/e. You clearly only pointed out his pros/positives for him while hes has cons that literally hurt him (i.e predictablity, approach problems, short range etc) But srsly he's not just underrated, he's just not seen why? Because ******** sterotypes that are " Weegee get's no attention" which are true actually.I personally think he deserves where he stands. He's average/medicore character but whose secrets haven't even laid a scratch on the surface.

I agree, but I don't think he has many secrets to go with. Hell, maybe his secrets aren't even secrets, just us being ignorant and failing to spot them. I think Luigi can be high tier (going by the top, high, mid and low tier format), but no higher than that.

Naah I'm leaning at low of high at best. Luigi doesn't go that deep anyways. Or we're just ******** in spotting them.
Oops, I should've been more specific. I meant to say low of high tier. He can get there, we just need to get smart and try and figure out some things.

Of course, we've been saying that for the last week or so, and we haven't done anything, so we better start working X^D

Look at Diddy's boards. Basically they just mindless spamming bananas to grab fthrows/bthrows while... us luigis just mindlessly doing dair to nair hope for them to get hit then aggressively like a nub hitting them without control

Basically your doing same thing over and over again mindlessly, w/o thinking or reacting.

The Dair to Nair is a nasty habit man, if I had known it'd be like this I would've never done it. I used to do DNair to aerial shoryuken o_O. That was weird.

Although it feels to me like there isn't much more to Luigi than what we have collectively discovered, there is no telling what the future may hold, and thus I am averse to predicting his future.

The only way to improve luigi is to think Luigi... breathe Luigi... be Luigi...

I think he's definitely underestimated by most when the match up occurs but I dont think I'd go as far as to say underrated as a character

Says the guy who 3-stocked Deva's MK.

He has a hard enough time against ROB, Marth, D3, and Gdubbs as is.

Does Wigi really have a hard time with ROB? I can understand the other three but I thought ROB's size and weight made him really easy to combo and hit with kill moves.

His laser does make it pretty hard though. I thought ROB was like the only 50-50 top tier, next to Falco.

I also beat Praxis's MK, and pretty much controlled brdy's MK in teams, but the first two don't main him, and brdy doesn't even play much brawl anymore. I have huge issues against those that actually main MK and do all they can to get good with him.

I guess ROB isn't really top tier, but the projectiles hurt me. I don't know, I might just be rusty on the matchup.

Oh, and I have no problem with Falco or Snake, Falco I almost would say is Luigi's favor on levels not titled "final destination" =/

Luigi goes around like 50-50 or 55:45 either way with Rob. He's not THAT hard.Luigi has the tools to make it what it takes for the matchup IMO... Same along with Gheb's idea on Falco too. He still ***** WArio though. Lol.

The problem with ROB is getting close. He can kill you if you get to close with his spinning attack and SH>Dair. And a camping ROB is bothersome because you can't avoid the laser on the same plain as ROB and he can just wait and charge it until the time is right.

When you get down to it, Luigi has so much stuff going for him to make a great spacing game. His low traction can allow for crawldashing, moonwalking, and if you regular shield an enemy attack, release, and do an aerial right after, you'll go flying. Works for ground based attacks too if you DI down. It's annoying when you don't except it, but great when you do.

Easy there. I know SAL from NH, he just WAAAAAY prefers Melee Luigi. I dunno why, but he does.

He also has a really good Brawl Luigi to boot and we usually play Luigi dittos.

If luigi didn't have that traction problem he'd be the 2st best character in the game

to me I guess
