Is Jungle Japes a good stage for Falco?

I wanted to play there ever since I saw this match.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkfBqaMF1aU

But I seem to get killed by the ClapTrap at the weirdest times...and I seem to SD a lot here.

It seems the pattern is getting predictable, too...is it worth learning to play well here to use as a counterpick or something? And if so, against who?

LOL I knew what match it would be before I clicked on it. That match shows what's possible, but I think all that is pretty much novelty tricks. I don't think that they would be incredibly useful after the other person figured out what was going on. That being said, I think Japes is a decent course for falco, and the maneuverability is sweet, I just think this match makes it look a bit better than it actually is. As for the against who part, I'd say because of the high ceiling, you'll want to take vertical KO'ers like fox and pikachu here, also people who rely on a largely vertical recovery (marth, luigi, ganon) as their recovery could get owned by the water. Don't go here against bowser, because he can up b and edge attack spam on the edges, Peach and Jiggs will never die.

after i saw that video i started practicing that level too. i dont know how well it would do against other characters but it couldnt hurt to try it. watch for the klaptraps they are easy to catch if you watch for them. for example dont go down if you see one coming out the right and dont try forward's upB under the stage until a few seconds after the clap is past you.

I seem to SD here a lot too, but this is a decent Falco stage. The sides are close to the platforms, so killing a Peach/Jiggs horizontally wouldn't be as hard as other stages. I don't know how Forward did the Firefox out of the water, but I wish I knew how to do it >_>;;

I somewhat think he did that accidentally. If not, very nice, but a big risk.

This stage seems to be good for a lot of characters, other than just Falco (Bowser just dominates here). IMO, Falco's dair gains some strength here since you have more gaps in the stage. As for the up-B out of the water, its possible as long as you don't get hit by those klaptraps since you don't actually die until you fall under the water (or get swept away, but you fall so fast it rarely ever happens)

I want to expect better of you, but I know not to
I've tried this stage as a counterpick sometime in Febuary, but it never really worked out. I thought it would be sweet for fthrow->forward b over the little gaps, but the opponent always gets hit by the higher part of the forward b and gets sent up rather than meteored into the river like I thought they would. The maneuverablity on this stage is sweet, but as a fast faller, Falco is too easily put into the drink and forced to make awkward recoveries. Also, in this match, notice that:

a. it's darkrain playing Fox, and darkrain never plays anyone besides CF, so it's not like the fox is even in Forward's league. Not hating or anything, but this is the first video of darkrain where he's not playing CF, and I didn't see anything terribly impressive.
b. darkrain kills himself twice. Forward was probably still going to win, but the only reason it was a COMPLETE blow-out were the 2 stupid SDs at the end.

Anyway, from my brief experience on JJ, it's a pretty cool level and a nice one to know how to play against Peaches who may Counterpick it, but it's not good enough for Falco to use as a counterpick himself.

I like watching that video, its really entertaining. I don't really practice this stage much since I can't even EHDL correctly (No one ever told me how so I'm lost). When I do play this I can do maybe three fourths of what he does, and then get owned by what waits for me in the river.

That was HILARIOUS!

Yeah sure go for it, most people don't practice much on counter pick stages, take em outta their comfort zone.

oh i counter picked a fox on this one. it was a pretty easy win, although i was on the same level as him. he seemed to mess up mor and i could just dair him off shine combos at low percents and kill him

I sometimes counterpick Jungle Japes against Falco.

What Forward's doing is just mostly just novelty tricks like James Sparrow said. If you want to get killed by the Klaptrap, go right ahead. Sure it's fun to watch, but it's just too risky on that stage.

You'll notice though that Forward knows when to stop using the novelty trick and doesn't abuse it. Rather, he wields it, like a surgeon with a scalpel.

Made of lasers.

And awesome.

lol i came in here expecting talk of foward, then i saw your sig wobbles thats freakin AMAZING when did he say that XD

anyways... japes is flashy, catches people offguard a lot, its a good counterpick but I think it can also limit falco's recovery quite a bit, but he's got very nice laser spam options with quick escape on his illusions...

killing off the top isn't really a big issue for falco so the ridiculously high ceiling doesn't hinder, plus you got lots of places where you can dair gimp... easy edgeuards due to most chars being simply unable to sweetspot on the stage...

meh, i dont play falco, but me and forward did bowser vs falco there a lot, it doesnt' really give that "cant sweetspot easy edgeuard" against bowser (actually more the opposite because it limits your own edgeguarding capability there vs bowser or horizontal recovery IMO) but i dunno, i say if you manage to get a good feel for the stage you almost have an inherant advantage, theres lots of ways to SD and screw up on accident with the river and klap trap down there...

meh, i'm not really saying anything. lol

Unless you're forward you shouldn't play falco on Jungle Japes. Nuff said.

Edit: ...unless you want a good laugh... try 4 player falco free for all there and you will understand.

That is a great stage, but its not like FD in how easy it is to use. You have to practice a LOT on that stage. Some strategies are using side-b to move around from the middle to the edges, and as a mindgame. One of my favorite things is that you could be on the left side and instead of trying to go to the nearest platform, wait a little and then sweetspot the edge at the middle of the stage because it is just about impossible to hit u w/o suiciding is u do that.(unless they jump off stage) My friend uses that stage with falco and i think its pretty solid.

In Darkrain's defense, you gotta cut him a little slack. He counter picked the stage, and chose Fox, he went in with a set game plan. He wasn't prepared to adapt to anything, he was prepared to do exactly what he knows in regards to that character/stage combination.

I started the match with one of the flashiest loops possible, on someone who has NEVER seen it before. You have to understand that something like that is going to shake him up mentally, and is going to affect his game play the rest of the match (as evident by his lazy attacking, and suicide on the last stock.)

Yeah, there are many strategies for this stage; not only Falco but others like Bowser and Peach.

I understand donkeykong, but i dont get samus and peach. I know its a good peach stage overall, but when i smash and pick peach there, my friend picks falco and either plays even with me or wins most of the time. Is samus becaus the platforms make it easy to projectile spam? I dont see y else though, seeing as it partially stops recoveries from making a huge impact on the game, as does dreamland.

You know that darkrain counterpicked that, correct XD

Forward said he was "surprised"... Lol

Actually, that is my counterpick vs my friends falco, if you shine him near the holes, sometimes the rapids will get to him... And then you simply shine him when he tries his weakass firefox.
